Bradford Cathedral, Stott Hill, Bradford, BD1 4EH T: 01274 777720 2
Welcome and Notices The Very Reverend Jerry Lepine, Dean of Bradford We stand Silence In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Hymn Rejoice in God’s saints, today and all days! A world without saints forgets how to praise. Their faith in acquiring the habit of prayer, their depth of adoring, Lord, help us to share. Some march with events to turn them God’s way; some need to withdraw, the better to pray; some carry the gospel through fire and through flood: our world is their parish: their purpose is God. Rejoice in those saints, unpraised and unknown, who bear someone’s cross or shoulder their own: they shame our complaining, our comforts, our cares: what patience in caring, what courage, is theirs! Rejoice in God’s saints, today and all days! A world without saints forgets how to praise. In loving, in living, they prove it is true: the way of self-giving, Lord, leads us to you. F. Pratt Green (1903-2000) Tune: PADERBORN, German folk melody CP 227
Greeting Grace, mercy and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ be with you and also with you. Rejoice, people of God, praise the Lord! Let us keep the feast in honour of all God’s saints, in whose victory the angels rejoice and glorify the Son of God.

Prayers of Penitence Since we are surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely, looking to Jesus in penitence and faith. Hebrews 12.1 Silence Almighty God, our heavenly Father, we have sinned against you, through our own fault, in thought, and word, and deed, and in what we have left undone. We are heartily sorry, and repent of all our sins. For your Son our Lord Jesus Christ's sake, forgive us all that is past; and grant that we may serve you in newness of life to the glory of your name. Amen. Almighty God, who forgives all who truly repent, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in life eternal; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

New Testament Reading
Ephesians 1.11-end
read by Alex McLelland
11
In Christ we have also obtained an inheritance, having been destined according to the purpose of him who accomplishes all things according to his counsel and will, 12so that we, who were the first to set our hope on Christ, might live for the praise of his glory. 13In him you also, when you had heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and had believed in him, were marked with the seal of the promised Holy Spirit; 14this is the pledge of our inheritance towards redemption as God’s own people, to the praise of his glory. 15
I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love towards all the saints, and for this reason 16I do not cease to give thanks for you as I remember you in my 5
prayers. 17I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation as you come to know him, 18so that, with the eyes of your heart enlightened, you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance among the saints, 19and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power for us who believe, according to the working of his great power. 20God put this power to work in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, 21far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the age to come. 22And he has put all things under his feet and has made him the head over all things for the church, 23which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Silence
Hymn Glory to you, O God, for all your saints in light, who nobly waged and won the fierce and well-fought fight. Their praises sing, who life outpoured by fire and sword for Christ their King. Thanks be to you, O Lord, for Saints your Spirit stirred in humble paths to live your life and speak your word. Unnumbered they whose shining light informs our sight from day to day. Lord God of truth and love, ‘Your Kingdom come’, we pray; give us your grace to know your truth and walk your way. Your will be done here on this earth, till saints in earth and heaven are one. Words: Howard Charles Adie Gaunt (1902-1983) Tune: Love Unknown SP115

Gospel Reading
Choir Choir
Luke 6.20-31
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. You are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, A holy nation, God’s own people, Called out of darkness into his marvellous light. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. Glory to you, O Lord.
Then he looked up at his disciples and said: ‘Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. 21 ‘Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you will be filled. ‘Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh. 22 ‘Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude you, revile you, and defame you on account of the Son of Man. 23Rejoice on that day and leap for joy, for surely your reward is great in heaven; for that is what their ancestors did to the prophets. 24 ‘But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your consolation. 25 ‘Woe to you who are full now, for you will be hungry. ‘Woe to you who are laughing now, for you will mourn and weep. 26 ‘Woe to you when all speak well of you, for that is what their ancestors did to the false prophets. 27 ‘But I say to you that listen, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, 28bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you. 29If anyone strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also; and from anyone who takes away your coat do not withhold even your shirt. 30Give to everyone who begs from you; and if anyone takes away your goods, do not ask for them again. 31Do to others as you would have them do to you. 20
This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ.

Sermon The Right Reverend Tom Butler, Assistant Bishop After an opening prayer, we sit. Silence We stand
The Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. We sit or kneel
Prayers of Intercession
Led by Chris Coupland
In the power of the Spirit and in union with Christ, let us pray to the Father. After each section this, or another, response is used: Lord, in your mercy hear our prayer. At the end Merciful Father, accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

Welcomes and Introductions We stand
Giving and Receiving Peace We are fellow-citizens with the saints and of the household of God, through Christ our Lord, who came and preached peace to those who were far off and those who were near. The peace of the Lord be always with you and also with you. We offer one another a sign of God’s peace
Hymn During this hymn a collection is taken. The gifts of the people are presented, and the Table is set with bread and wine. Ye servants of God, your Master proclaim, and publish abroad his wonderful name; the name all-victorious of Jesus extol: his kingdom is glorious, and rules over all. God ruleth on high, almighty to save; and still he is nigh, his presence we have; the great congregation his triumph shall sing, ascribing salvation to Jesus our King. Salvation to God who sits on the throne! Let all cry aloud, and honour the Son. The praises of Jesus the angels proclaim, fall down on their faces, and worship the Lamb. Then let us adore, and give him his right: all glory and power, all wisdom and might, and honour, and blessing, with angels above, and thanks never-ceasing, and infinite love. Charles Wesley (1707-1788) CP627 Tune: Laudate Dominum (Parry) CP543i)
Prayer at the Preparation of the Table To you we come, Father of lights, with angels and saints, where heaven and earth unite. May Jesus meet us in the breaking of the bread. Amen. 5
Great Thanksgiving Prayer
Prayer B
It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, always and everywhere to give you thanks, holy Father, almighty and eternal God, through Jesus Christ our Lord. And now we give you thanks, most gracious God, surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses and glorified in the assembly of the saints. The glorious company of apostles praise you. The noble fellowship of prophets praise you. The white-robed army of martyrs praise you. We, your holy Church, acclaim you. In communion with angels and archangels, and with all who served you on earth and worship you now in heaven, we raise our voice to proclaim your glory, for ever praising you and singing: Choir
Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus Dominus Deus Sabaoth. Pleni sunt cĂŚli et terra gloria tua. Hosanna in excelsis. Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini. Hosanna in excelsis. Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.
Lord, you are holy indeed, the source of all holiness; grant that by the power of your Holy Spirit, and according to your holy will, these gifts of bread and wine may be to us the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ; 6
who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread and gave you thanks; he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me. In the same way, after supper he took the cup and gave you thanks; he gave it to them, saying: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. Great is the mystery of faith: Christ has died: Christ is risen: Christ will come again. And so, Father, calling to mind his death on the cross, his perfect sacrifice made once for the sins of the whole world; rejoicing in his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension, and looking for his coming in glory, we celebrate this memorial of our redemption. As we offer you this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, we bring before you this bread and this cup, and we thank you for counting us worthy to stand in your presence and serve you. Send the Holy Spirit on your people and gather into one in your kingdom all who share this one bread and one cup, so that we, in the company of all the saints, may praise and glorify you for ever, through Jesus Christ our Lord; by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory be yours, almighty Father, for ever and ever. Amen. We sit or kneel Silence

The Lord’s Prayer With saints and martyrs through the ages, as our Saviour taught us, so we pray Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.
Breaking of the Bread We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread.
Giving of Communion I heard the voice of a great multitude crying, ‘Alleluia.’ The Lord our God has entered into his kingdom. Blessed are those who are called to the supper of the Lamb. As the lay ministers receive communion the choir sings Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis. Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, dona nobis pacem. Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, grant us peace. Stewards will direct you to the Communion rail. Please indicate if you would like a glutenfree wafer or non-alcoholic wine. To indicate your wish to receive a blessing, please bring this service sheet with you.

Communion Motet Give us the wings of faith to rise within the veil, and see the saints above, how great their joys, how bright their glories be. We ask them whence their victory came: they, with one united breath, ascribe the conquest to the Lamb, their triumph to his death. They marked the footsteps that he trod, his zeal inspired their breast, and, following their incarnate God, they reached the promised rest. Words: Isaac Watts (1674–1748) Music: Ernest Bullock (1890–1979)

Communion Hymn Christ is the world’s light, he and none other: born in our darkness, he became our brother; if we have seen him, we have seen the Father: Glory to God on high. Christ is the world’s peace, he and none other: no one can serve him and despise a brother; who else unites us, one in God the Father? Glory to God on high. Christ is the world’s life, he and none other; sold once for silver, murdered here, our brother. He who redeems us, reigns with God the Father: Glory to God on high. Give God the glory, God and none other; give God the glory, Spirit, Son and Father; give God the glory, God in man my brother; Glory to God on high. Words: F Pratt Green Tune: Christe Sanctorum CP213

Prayers after Communion Lord of heaven, in this Eucharist you have brought us near to an innumerable company of angels and to the spirits of the saints made perfect: as in this food of our earthly pilgrimage we have shared their fellowship, so may we come to share their joy in heaven; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. God, the source of all holiness and giver of all good things: may we who have shared at this table as strangers and pilgrims here on earth be welcomed with all your saints to the heavenly feast on the day of your kingdom; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Silence
Hymn Thanks be to God for his saints of each past generation, one with us still in one body, one great congregation; with them proclaim Jesus for ever the same, Author of life and salvation. Thanks be to God for his blessings which daily surround us; glory to Christ, the Redeemer who sought us and found us, who from the grave rose, the almighty to save, breaking the fetters that bound us. Thanks be to God for the years that are yet in his keeping, trusting each day to the care of a Father unsleeping, on to the end, Christ our companion and friend, joy at the last for our weeping. Thanks be to God who has called us and daily defends us, who with the Son and the Spirit unchanging befriends us; now in that name, Jesus for ever the same, forth to his service he sends us. Words: Timothy Dudley-Smith (b.1926) Tune: Lobe Den Herren SP117
