I Come From…. The Cathedral speaks its origins in a tribute to the five Bradford schoolgirls whose I Come From poem was featured in the BBC television event We Are Bradford. I come from forest oaks and bruising weights of Yorkshire rock. I come from a craftsman’s chisel. I come from the dung-clotted straw of a stable. I come from dirty feet washed by my founder just before he died. I come from an empire That wrote its will across a tiny kingdom. I come from a far land, across deserts
and seething seas. I come from closer than your skin: I come from a longing deep within you. I come from Judas. I come from the Crusades, and countless acts that betray my founder.
I come from a king’s wish to divorce his wife. I come from the footsteps of unknown people. I come from stories that will never be told.

I come from a parched wilderness
in which a man struggled for forty days; I come from bare concrete. I come from the cries of the marginalised. I come from the taste of wine, and I have known it turn into vinegar.
I come from the ultimate failed project. Followers fleeing; leader put to death. A management disaster. The twist is: the project didn’t die. I come bloodied by the deaths of martyrs: I come grounded in day-to-day acts. I come floating on the silence of eternity. I come from Bradford. I come from the grit and courage of its people. I come from unbounded Spirit which I anchor firm in the midst of shops and concrete, firm and deep in this city’s heart. During the Cathedral’s centenary year Diane Pacitti is our poet in residence. She will produce a collection of poems based on Bradford and its cathedral.

Join us in 2020 as we celebrate the
Year of Cathedrals Year of Pilgrimage 2020 will bring together a remarkable number of individual cathedral anniversaries and initiatives that will help tell Britain’s story – past and present and offer a creative and positive way to look to the future.
There will also be a host of new pilgrim routes leading to cathedrals, highlighting the importance of spiritual, mental and physical well-being.
Even though our Centenary year will come to a close this December, 2020 will be just as busy for Bradford Cathedral with more events, services, talks, music recitals and much more.
Look out for our January - April 2020 programme, available from late 2019, or visit our website for all the latest news and events.
