Welcome and Notices The Reverend Canon Paul Maybury, Canon Precentor We stand Silence

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Hymn Let us build a house where love can dwell and all can safely live, a place where saints and children tell how hearts learn to forgive. Built of hopes and dreams and visions, rock of faith and vault of grace; here the love of Christ shall end divisions: All are welcome, all are welcome, all are welcome in this place. Let us build a house where prophets speak, and words are strong and true, where all God's children dare to seek to dream God's reign anew. Here the cross shall stand as witness and as symbol of God's grace; here as one we claim the faith of Jesus: Let us build a house where love is found in water, wine and wheat: a banquet hall on holy ground where peace and justice meet. Here the love of God, through Jesus, is revealed in time and space; as we share in Christ the feast that frees us: Let us build a house where hands will reach beyond the wood and stone to heal and strengthen, serve and teach, and live the Word they've known. Here the outcast and the stranger bear the image of God's face; let us bring an end to fear and danger:

Let us build a house where all are named, their songs and visions heard and loved and treasured, taught and claimed as words within the Word. Built of tears and cries and laughter, prayers of faith and songs of grace, let this house proclaim from floor to rafter: Words: Marty Haughen (b1950) Tune: Two Oaks SP 176

Greeting Welcome in the name of Christ, God’s grace, mercy and peace be with you and also with you. We come from scattered lives to meet with God. Let us recognize his presence with us. Eternal God, source of all blessing, help us to worship you with all our heart and mind and strength; for you alone are God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, for ever and ever. Amen. We remain standing

Prayers of Penitence Human sin disfigures the whole creation, which groans with eager longing for God's redemption. We confess our sin in penitence and faith. Lord, you give us this good earth, Yet we take your generous gifts for granted. Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Lord, you give us this good earth, But we squander its rich resources. Christ, have mercy. Christ, have mercy Lord, you give us this good earth, But we fail to share your bounty with all your children. Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Silence 4

cf Romans 8.22,23

May God who loved the world so much that he sent his son to be our Saviour forgive you your sins and make you holy to serve him in the world, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. We remain standing as the choir sings:

Gloria in Excelsis Glory to God in the highest, and peace to his people on earth. Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen. The president introduces a period of silent prayer

Prayer of the day Lord of creation, whose glory is around and within us: Open our eyes to your wonders, that we may serve you with reverence and know your peace at our lives’ end, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

New Testament Reading

Colossians 1.15-20 read by Liz Jackson

15

He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation; 16for in him all things in heaven and on earth were created, things visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or powers—all things have been created through him and for him. 17He himself is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18He is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that he might come to have first place in everything. 19For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, 20and through him God was pleased to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, by making peace through the blood of his cross. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Silence We stand

Hymn With wonder, Lord, we see your works, we see the beauty you have made, this earth, the skies, all things that are in beauty made. With wonder, Lord, we see your works, and childlike in our joy we sing to praise you, bless you, Maker Lord of everything. The stars that fill the skies above, the sun and moon which give our light, are your designing for our use and our delight. We praise your works, yet we ourselves are works of wonder made by you, not far from you in all we are and all we do. All you have made is ours to rule, the birds and beasts at will to tame, all things to order for the glory of your name. Words: Brian Foley, based on Psalm 8 Tune: Es ist kein Tag CP269

Gospel Reading Choir

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

Choir

You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honour and power, for you have created all things. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. Glory to you, O Lord

John 1.6-18 6

There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7He came as a witness to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him. 8He himself was not the light, but he came to testify to the light. 9The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world.* 10 He was in the world, and the world came into being through him; yet the world did not know him. 11He came to what was his own,* and his own people did not accept him. 12But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God, 13who were born, not of blood or of the will of the flesh or of the will of man, but of God. 14 And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father’s only son,* full of grace and truth. 15(John testified to him and cried out, ‘This was he of whom I said, “He who comes after me ranks ahead of me because he was before me.” ’) 16From his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. 17The law indeed was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18No one has ever seen God. It is God the only Son,* who is close to the Father’s heart,* who has made him known. This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. After an opening prayer, we sit

Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. We sit

Prayers of Intercession In the power of the Spirit and in union with Christ, let us pray to the Father. After each section this, or an alternative, response is used: Lord of creation hear the cry of our hearts. Merciful Father, accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

Giving and Receiving Peace You shall go out in joy and be led back in peace; the mountains and the hills before you shall burst into song, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands. The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. We offer one another a sign of God’s peace

Hymn During this hymn a collection is taken The gifts of the people are presented and the table set with bread and wine Lord of the church, we pray for our renewing: Christ over all, our undivided aim. Fire of the Spirit, burn for our enduing, wind of the Spirit, fan the living flame! We turn to Christ amid our fear and failing, the will that lacks the courage to be free, the weary labours, all but unavailing, to bring us nearer what a church should be. Lord of the church, we seek a Father’s blessing, a true repentance and a faith restored, a swift obedience and a new possessing, filled with the Holy Spirit of the Lord! We turn to Christ from all our restless striving, unnumbered voices with a single prayer: the living water for our souls’ reviving, in Christ to live, and love and serve and care. Lord of the church, we long for our uniting, true to one calling, by one vision stirred; one cross proclaiming and one creed reciting, one in the truth of Jesus and his word. So lead us on; till toil and trouble ended, one church triumphant one new song shall sing, to praise his glory, risen and ascended, Christ over all, the everlasting King! Words: Timothy Dudley-Smith (b. 1926) Tune: ‘Londonderry Air’, Irish Traditional Melody harmonised by Doald Davidson (b. 1937) SP 161

Prayer of Preparation Blessed be God, by whose grace creation is renewed, by whose love heaven is opened, by whose mercy we offer our sacrifice of praise. Blessed be God for ever.

Great Thanksgiving Prayer

Prayer E

It is indeed right, it is our duty and our joy, always and everywhere to give you thanks, holy Father, almighty and eternal God. For you have created the heavens and the earth, and formed us in your own image. In the fullness of time you sent forth your Son, your eternal Word, who laid down his life for our salvation and rose from the grave, the first-fruits of your new creation. You send forth your holy and life-giving Spirit to give life to our mortal bodies and to renew the face of the earth. Therefore with all the heavenly hosts, we give voice to everything that you have made, and sing the eternal hymn of praise. Choir

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. We praise and bless you, loving Father, through Jesus Christ, our Lord; and as we obey his command, send your Holy Spirit, that broken bread and wine outpoured 10

may be for us the body and blood of your dear Son. On the night before he died he had supper with his friends and, taking bread, he praised you. He broke the bread, gave it to them and said: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me. When supper was ended he took the cup of wine. Again he praised you, gave it to them and said: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. So, Father, we remember all that Jesus did, in him we plead with confidence his sacrifice made once for all upon the cross. Bringing before you the bread of life and cup of salvation, we proclaim his death and resurrection until he comes in glory. Christ is the bread of life: When we eat this bread and drink this cup we proclaim your death, Lord Jesus, until you come in glory. Lord of all life, help us to work together for that day when your kingdom comes and justice and mercy will be seen in all the earth. Look with favour on your people, gather us in your loving arms and bring us with all the saints to feast at your table in heaven. Through Christ, and with Christ, and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory are yours, O loving Father, for ever and ever. Amen We sit or kneel Silence

The Lord’s Prayer Looking for the coming of his kingdom, as our Saviour taught us, so we pray: Our Father in heaven hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.

Breaking of the Bread We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread.

Giving of Communion Draw near with faith. Receive the body of our Lord Jesus Christ which he gave for you, and his blood which he shed for you. Eat and drink in remembrance that he died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith with thanksgiving. As the Lay ministers receive communion the choir sings O Lamb of God, that takest away the sin of the world: have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sin of the world: have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sin of the world: grant us thy peace. Stewards will direct you to the Communion administration points. Please indicate if you’d like a gluten-free wafer or non-alcoholic wine. To indicate your wish to receive a blessing, please bring this service sheet with you.

Communion Hymn Strengthen for service, Lord, the hands that holy things have taken; let ears that now have heard thy songs to clamour never waken. Lord, may the tongues which 'Holy' sang keep free from all deceiving; the eyes which saw thy love be bright, thy blessèd hope perceiving.

13

The feet that tread thy holy courts from light do thou not banish; the bodies by thy Body fed with thy new life replenish. Words: Ascribed to Ephraim the Syrian c306-373 Translated by Charles W Humphreys (1841-1921) and Percy Dearmer (1867-1936) Tune: Ach Gott Und Herr CP323

Prayers after Communion God our creator, you give seed for us to sow and bread for us to eat: As you have blessed the fruit of our labour in this eucharist, so we ask you to give all your children their daily bread, that the world may praise you for your goodness; Through Christ our Lord. Amen. Lord of all creation, as we have received the bread and wine, fruits of the earth and tokens of salvation, so with joy we celebrate your goodness and commit ourselves to serve you on earth, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. We stand

Hymn O for a thousand tongues to sing my dear Redeemer’s praise, the glories of my God and King, the triumphs of his grace! Jesus! the name that charms our fears, that bids our sorrows cease; ‘tis music in a sinner’s ears, ‘tis life and health and peace. He breaks the power of cancelled sin, he sets the prisoner free: his blood can make the foulest clean; his blood availed for me. He speaks; and, listening to his voice, new life the dead receive, the mournful broken hearts rejoice, the humble poor believe.

14

Hear him, ye deaf, his praise, ye dumb, your loosened tongues employ; ye blind, behold your Saviour come; and leap, ye lame, for joy! My gracious Master and my God, assist me to proclaim and spread through all the earth abroad the honours of thy name. Words: Charles Wesley CP534 Tune: Lyngham

Blessing May God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who is the source of all goodness and growth, pour his blessing upon all things created, and upon you his children, that you may use his gifts to his glory and the welfare of all peoples; and the blessing of God almighty the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always.. Amen.

Dismissal Go in peace to love and serve the Lord. In the name of Christ. Amen. Organ Voluntary Prelude from Sonata 7, Op. 127 - J. Rheinberger The concluding organ voluntary is offered as part of our worship. Please remain for refreshments served at the back of the Cathedral.
