Presentation The Dean says, On every Cathedral and Parish Church in our land it is proper to fly the flag of St George. In addition to Saints’ Days and other Holy Days, it is flown from our tower on Her Majesty the Queen’s Birthday, the Queen’s Accession Day, and also upon other days of National or Civic importance. Each year the Bradford Branch of the Royal Society of St George generously presents a flag of St George to the Cathedral, and I now invite the President of the Society, Jillian Ferguson, to present the flag for 2019. The President of the Bradford Branch of the RSSG, carrying the flag over her arm, is led by a Verger to the Chancel Steps and says, Dean Jerry, I ask you to accept this flag of St George. Whenever it is flown from the Cathedral Tower, may it remind us all of the duty we owe to our God, our Queen and our Country. The Dean and the RSSG President move to the Sanctuary step, where the flag is accepted with these words, On behalf of the Chapter of this our Cathedral Church of St Peter, Bradford, I thank you and the Bradford Branch of the Royal Society of St George for this flag and may God our Father, who accepts the gifts we offer, bless this gift of the symbol of duty and courage, that by it we learn to serve Him more faithfully, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The flag is placed upon the Altar God save our gracious Queen, long live our noble Queen, God save the Queen. Send her victorious, happy and glorious, long to reign over us: God save the Queen. Thy choicest gifts in store on her be pleased to pour, long may she reign. May she defend our laws, and ever give us cause to sing with heart and voice, God save the Queen. 4

New Testament Reading
Acts 5.27-32 read by Jillian Ferguson

When they had brought them, they had them stand before the council. The high priest questioned them, 28saying, ‘We gave you strict orders not to teach in this name, yet here you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and you are determined to bring this man’s blood on us.’29But Peter and the apostles answered, ‘We must obey God rather than any human authority.30The God of our ancestors raised up Jesus, whom you had killed by hanging him on a tree. 31God exalted him at his right hand as Leader and Saviour, so that he might give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins. 32And we are witnesses to these things, and so is the Holy Spirit whom God has given to those who obey him.’ This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. We stand
Hymn If Christ had not been raised from death our faith would be in vain, our preaching but a waste of breath, our sin and guilt remain. But now the Lord is risen indeed; he rules in earth and heaven: his Gospel meets a world of need in Christ we are forgiven. If Christ still lay within the tomb then death would be the end, and we should face our final doom with neither guide nor friend. But now the Saviour is raised up, so when a Christian dies we mourn, yet look to God in hope in Christ the saints arise! If Christ had not been truly raised his church would live a lie; his name should never more be praised, his words deserve to die. But now our great Redeemer lives; through him we are restored; his word endures, his church revives in Christ, our risen Lord. Gospel Reading
Alleluia, alleluia. Alleluia, alleluia. Choir:
Jesus said, ‘All who see the Son and believe in him may have eternal life; and I will raise them up on the last day.’
John 6:40
Alleluia, alleluia. Alleluia, alleluia. Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. Glory to you, O Lord John 20.19-end 19
When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, ‘Peace be with you.’ 20After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. 21Jesus said to them again, ‘Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.’ 22When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit. 23If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.’ 24 But Thomas (who was called the Twin), one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. 25So the other disciples told him, ‘We have seen the Lord.’ But he said to them, ‘Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands, and put my finger in the mark of the nails and my hand in his side, I will not believe.’ 26 A week later his disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were shut, Jesus came and stood among them and said, ‘Peace be with you.’ 27Then he said to Thomas, ‘Put your finger here and see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it in my side. Do not doubt but believe.’ 28Thomas answered him, ‘My Lord and my God!’ 29Jesus said to him, ‘Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have come to believe.’ 30 Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book. 31But these are written so that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that through believing you may have life in his name. This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ 7

Affirmation of faith Let us declare our faith in the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures; he was buried; he was raised to life on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures; afterwards he appeared to his followers, and to all the apostles: this we have received, and this we believe. Amen. cf 1 Corinthians 15.3-7

Prayers of Penitence Christ died to sin once for all, and now he lives to God. Let us renew our resolve to have done with all that is evil and confess our sins in penitence and faith. Silence
Father eternal, giver of light and grace, we have sinned against you and against our neighbour, in what we have thought, in what we have said and done, through ignorance, through weakness, through our own deliberate fault. We have wounded your love and marred your image in us. We are sorry and ashamed, and repent of all our sins. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, who died for us, forgive us all that is past; and lead us out from darkness to walk as children of light. Amen. 8
May the God of all mercies cleanse you from your sins, and restore you in his image to the praise and glory of his name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus Dominus Deus Sabaoth Pleni sunt caeli et terra gloria tua Hosanna in excelsis. Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domine Hosanna in excelsis Holy, holy, holy Lord God of Hosts Heaven and earth are full of your glory Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord Hosanna in the highest. We praise and bless you, loving Father, through Jesus Christ, our Lord; and as we obey his command, send your Holy Spirit, that broken bread and wine outpoured may be for us the body and blood of your dear Son. On the night before he died he had supper with his friends and, taking bread, he praised you. He broke the bread, gave it to them and said: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me. When supper was ended he took the cup of wine. Again he praised you, gave it to them and said: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. 11
Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. So, Father, we remember all that Jesus did, In him we plead with confidence his sacrifice made once for all upon the cross. Bringing before you the bread of life and cup of salvation, We proclaim his death and resurrection until he comes in glory. Great is the mystery of faith: Christ has died: Christ is risen: Christ will come again. Lord of all life, help us to work together for that day when your kingdom comes and justice and mercy will be seen in all the earth. Look with favour on your people, gather us in your loving arms and bring us with [N and] all the saints to feast at your table in heaven. Through Christ, and with Christ, and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory are yours, O loving Father, for ever and ever. Amen. We sit or kneel Silence
The Lord’s Prayer As our Saviour taught us, so we pray: Our Father in heaven hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen. 12
Breaking of the Bread We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread.
Giving of Communion Alleluia. Christ our Passover has been sacrificed for us. Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia. As the assistants receive communion the choir sings: Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, dona nobis pacem. Lamb of God, that takest away the sin of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb of God, that takest away the sin of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb of God, that takest away the sin of the world, grant us peace. Stewards will direct you to the communion distribution points. Hymn I come with joy, a child of God, forgiven, loved and free, the life of Jesus to recall, in love laid down for me. I come with Christians far and near to find, as all are fed, the new community of love in Christ’s communion bread. As Christ breaks bread, and bids us share, each proud division ends. The love that made us, makes us one, and strangers now are friends. 13
The Spirit of the risen Christ, unseen, but ever near, is in such friendship better known, alive among us here. Together met, together bound by all that God has done, we’ll go with joy, to give the world the love that makes us one. Words: Brian A Wren Tune: St Botolph CP305
Prayers after Communion Merciful Father, you gave your Son Jesus Christ to be the good shepherd, and in his love for us to lay down his life and rise again: keep us always under his protection, and give us grace to follow in his steps; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Almighty God, we thank you for feeding us with the body and blood of your Son, Jesus Christ. Through him we offer you our souls and bodies to be a living sacrifice. Send us out in the power of your Spirit to live and work to your praise and glory. Amen. We stand
Hymn Love’s redeeming work is done; fought the fight, the battle won: lo, our Sun’s eclipse is o’er, lo, he sets in blood no more. Vain the stone, the watch, the seal; Christ has burst the gates of hell; death in vain forbids his rise; Christ has opened paradise. Lives again our glorious King; where, O death, is now thy sting? dying once, he all doth save; where thy victory, O grave? 14
Soar we now where Christ has led, following our exalted Head; made like him, like him we rise; ours the cross, the grave, the skies. Hail the Lord of earth and heaven! Praise to thee by both be given: thee we greet triumphant now; hail, the Resurrection Thou! Words: Charles Wesley Tune: Savannah CP150
Blessing May Christ, who out of defeat brings new hope and a new future, ďŹ ll you with his new life; and the blessing of God almighty the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. Amen.
Dismissal With the power that raised Jesus from the dead at work within you, go in peace to love and serve the Lord. Alleluia, alleluia. In the name of Christ. Alleluia, Alleluia. Organ Voluntary The concluding organ voluntary is offered as part of our worship.
