Hymn The strife is o'er, the battle done; the victory of life is won; the song of triumph has begun. Alleluia! The powers of death have done their worst, but Christ their legions has dispersed. Let shouts of holy joy outburst. Alleluia! The three sad days are quickly sped; he rises glorious from the dead. All glory to our risen Head. Alleluia! He closed the yawning gates of hell; the bars from heaven's high portals fell. Let hymns of praise his triumph tell. Alleluia! Lord, by the stripes which wounded thee, from death's dread sting thy servants free, that we may live and sing to thee. Alleluia!

New Testament Reading
Acts 9.36-end read by Chris Coupland
Now in Joppa there was a disciple whose name was Tabitha, which in Greek is Dorcas. She was devoted to good works and acts of charity. 37At that time she became ill and died. When they had washed her, they laid her in a room upstairs. 38 Since Lydda was near Joppa, the disciples, who heard that Peter was there, sent two men to him with the request, ‘Please come to us without delay.’ 39So Peter got up and went with them; and when he arrived, they took him to the room upstairs. All the widows stood beside him, weeping and showing tunics and other clothing that Dorcas had made while she was with them. 40Peter put all of them outside, and then he knelt down and prayed. He turned to the body and said, ‘Tabitha, get up.’ Then she opened her eyes, and seeing Peter, she sat up. 41He gave her his hand and helped her up. Then calling the saints and widows, he showed her to be alive. 42This became known throughout Joppa, and many believed in the Lord. 43Meanwhile he stayed in Joppa for some time with a certain Simon, a tanner. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Silence We stand
Hymn The King of love my shepherd is, whose goodness faileth never; I nothing lack if I am his and he is mine for ever. Where streams of living water flow my ransomed soul he leadeth, and where the verdant pastures grow with food celestial feedeth.

Perverse and foolish oft I strayed, but yet in love he sought me, and on his shoulder gently laid, and home rejoicing brought me. In death’s dark vale I fear no ill with thee, dear Lord, beside me; thy rod and staff my comfort still, thy cross before to guide me. Thou spread’st a table in my sight; thy unction grace bestoweth; and O what transport of delight from thy pure chalice floweth! And so through all the length of days thy goodness faileth never: good Shepherd, may I sing your praise within thy house for ever. Words: H W Baker (Psalm 23) Tune: Dominus Regit Me CP589

Jesus said, ‘All who see the Son and believe in him may have eternal life; and I will raise them up on the last day.’
John 6:40
Alleluia, alleluia. Alleluia, alleluia. Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. Glory to you, O Lord John 10: 22-30 At that time the festival of the Dedication took place in Jerusalem. It was winter, 23 and Jesus was walking in the temple, in the portico of Solomon. 24So the Jews gathered around him and said to him, ‘How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly.’ 25Jesus answered, ‘I have told you, and you do not believe. The works that I do in my Father’s name testify to me; 26but you do not 6
believe, because you do not belong to my sheep. 27My sheep hear my voice. I know them, and they follow me. 28I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one will snatch them out of my hand. 29What my Father has given me is greater than all else, and no one can snatch it out of the Father’s hand. 30The Father and I are one.’ This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ After an opening prayer, we sit
Sermon The Reverend Canon Professor Myra Shackley, Cathedral Chaplain Silence We stand
Affirmation of faith Let us declare our faith in the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures; he was buried; he was raised to life on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures; afterwards he appeared to his followers, and to all the apostles: this we have received, and this we believe. Amen. cf 1 Corinthians 15.3-7

Prayers of Penitence Christ died to sin once for all, and now he lives to God. Let us renew our resolve to have done with all that is evil and confess our sins in penitence and faith. Silence
7
Father eternal, giver of light and grace, we have sinned against you and against our neighbour, in what we have thought, in what we have said and done, through ignorance, through weakness, through our own deliberate fault. We have wounded your love and marred your image in us. We are sorry and ashamed, and repent of all our sins. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, who died for us, forgive us all that is past; and lead us out from darkness to walk as children of light. Amen. May the God of all mercies cleanse you from your sins, and restore you in his image to the praise and glory of his name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Prayers of Intercession Led by Chris Coupland In the power of the Spirit and in union with Christ, let us pray to the Father. After each section either of these responses may be used: Lord in your mercy Hear our prayer.
Lord, hear us. Lord, graciously hear us.
Merciful Father, accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen We stand
Giving and Receiving Peace The risen Christ came and stood among his disciples and said, ‘Peace be with you.’ Then were they glad when they saw the Lord. Allelluia. The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. We offer one another a sign of God’s peace 8
John 20:19.20
Hymn During this hymn a collection is taken The gifts of the people are presented and the table set with bread and wine The day of resurrection! Earth, tell it out abroad; the Passover of gladness, the Passover of God; from death to life eternal, from earth unto the sky, our God hath brought us over with hymns of victory. Our hearts be pure from evil, that we may see aright the Lord in rays eternal of resurrection-light; and, listening to his accents, may hear so calm and plain his own ‘All hail’, and, hearing, may raise the victor strain. Now let the heavens be joyful, and earth her song begin, the round world keep high triumph, and all that is therein; let all things seen and unseen their notes of gladness blend, for Christ the Lord is risen, our joy that hath no end. Words: St John of Damascus, tr J M Neale Tune: Ellacombe CP157
Prayer of Preparation Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation. In your loving care you spread before us the table of life and give us the cup of salvation to drink. Keep us always in the fold of our Saviour and our Shepherd, your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Blessed be God for ever.

Great Thanksgiving Prayer
Prayer E
We give you thanks and praise for the gospel we have received. Christ died for our sins. Alleluia. He is risen indeed. Alleluia. Death comes to all through Adam, and sin reigns for a time. New life without end comes through Christ, and he reigns for ever. Alleluia. He is risen indeed. Alleluia. Death, where is your victory? Death, where is your sting? Death is swallowed up in victory, the victory you give us in Christ. Alleluia. He is risen indeed. Alleluia. We have been cruciďŹ ed with Christ, and live his risen life, to praise you for ever with angels and archangels. for ever praising you and singing: Choir
Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus Dominus Deus Sabaoth. Pleni sunt cĂŚli et terra gloria tua. Hosanna in excelsis. Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini. Hosanna in excelsis. Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of hosts heaven and earth are full of Thy glory: Glory be to Thee, O Lord most High. Amen. Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. 10
We praise and bless you, loving Father, through Jesus Christ, our Lord; and as we obey his command, send your Holy Spirit, that broken bread and wine outpoured may be for us the body and blood of your dear Son. On the night before he died he had supper with his friends and, taking bread, he praised you. He broke the bread, gave it to them and said: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me. When supper was ended he took the cup of wine. Again he praised you, gave it to them and said: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. So, father, we remember all the Jesus did, in him we plead with confidence his sacrifice made once for all upon the cross. Bringing before you the bread of life and cup of salvation, we proclaim his death and resurrection until he comes in glory. Great is the mystery of faith: Christ has died: Christ is risen: Christ will come again. Lord of all life, help us to work together for that day when your kingdom comes and justice and mercy will be seen in all the earth. Look with favour on your people, gather us in your loving arms and bring us with all the saints to feast at your table in heaven. Through Christ, and with Christ, and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory are yours, O loving father, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer As our Saviour taught us, so we pray: Our Father in heaven hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.
Breaking of the Bread We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread.
Giving of Communion Alleluia. Christ our Passover has been sacrificed for us. Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia. As the assistants receive communion the choir sings: Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi: miserere nobis. Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi: miserere nobis. Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi: dona nobis pacem. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sin of the world: have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sin of the world: have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sin of the world: grant us thy peace. Stewards will direct you to the communion distribution points. To indicate your wish to receive a blessing, please bring this service sheet with you. Please indicate if you would like a gluten free wafer or non-alcoholic wine.

Communion Motet As the Apple tree among the trees of the wood, so is my beloved among the sons. I sat down under his shadow with great delight, and his fruit was sweet to my taste my beloved spake, and said unto me, rise up, my love, my fair one, rise up, my love, my fair one, and come away. Text: Song of Solomon 2:3,10 Tune: Robert Walker (b1946)

Hymn Word that formed creation, earth and sea and sky ; Word that brings salvation, Word that will not die ; speak now in us that we might hear your call ; Living Word of Jesus, sound within us all. Love that formed and named us, filled this clay with breath ; Love that seeks and claims us, Love beyond all death ; come now and fire the life that flows from you ; Love that raised up Jesus, raise us up anew. Song of joy and wonder, sound so wild and free ; voice of wind and thunder, boundless as the sea ; Music of God, the love that casts out fear ; Song that sang in Jesus, sing within us here. God of all creation, form our hearts anew ; God of our salvation, lead us home to you ; Spirit, inspire our hearts to hear your call ; living God of Jesus, come renew us all ! Words and Music: Marty Haugen (b. 1950) SP 81
Prayers after Communion Merciful Father, you gave your Son Jesus Christ to be the good shepherd, and in his love for us to lay down his life and rise again: keep us always under his protection, and give us grace to follow in his steps; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Almighty God, we thank you for feeding us with the body and blood of your Son, Jesus Christ. Through him we offer you our souls and bodies to be a living sacrifice. Send us out in the power of your Spirit to live and work to your praise and glory. Amen. We stand
Hymn Praise to the Holiest in the height, and in the depth be praise: in all his words most wonderful, most sure in all his ways. O loving wisdom of our God! When all was sin and shame, a second Adam to the fight and to the rescue came. O wisest love! That flesh and blood, which did in Adam fail, should strive afresh against the foe, should strive and should prevail. And that a higher gift than grace should flesh and blood refine, God’s presence and his very self, and essence all-divine. O generous love! That he, who smote in Man for man the foe, the double agony in Man for man should undergo; And in the garden secretly, and on the cross on high, should teach his brethren, and inspire to suffer and to die. Praise to the Holiest in the height, and in the depth be praise: in all his words most wonderful, most sure in all his ways. Words: John Henry Newman Tune: Gerontius CP557
