Hymn during which the children leave for Children’s Space

All things bright and beautiful, all creatures great and small, all things wise and wonderful, the Lord God made them all. Each little flower that opens, each little bird that sings, he made their glowing colours, he made their tiny wings: The purple-headed mountain, the river running by, the sunset, and the morning that brightens up the sky: The cold wind in the winter, the pleasant summer sun, the ripe fruits in the garden, he made them every one: He gave us eyes to see them, and lips that we might tell how great is God almighty, who has made all things well:

Words: Cecil Frances Alexander (1818-1895) Tune: All Things Bright and Beautiful CP251

Greeting The light and peace of Jesus Christ be with you and also with you. The glory of the Lord has risen upon us. Let us rejoice and sing God's praise for ever. We sit. The parents and godparents remain standing.

Introduction We rejoice today with the family of Mila as they thank God for the gift of life and bring Mila for baptism. God our creator, we thank you for the wonder of new life and for the mystery of human love. We give thanks for all whose support and skill surround and sustain the beginning of life. As Jesus knew love and discipline within a human family, may Mila grow in strength and wisdom. As Mary knew the joys and pains of motherhood, give these parents your sustaining grace and love; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen .

Presentation Faith is the gift of God to his people. In baptism the Lord is adding to our number those whom he is calling. People of God, will you welcome Mila and uphold her in his new life in Christ? With the help of God, we will. Parents and godparents, the Church receives Mila with joy. Today we are trusting God for her growth in faith. Will you pray for her, draw her by your example into the community of faith, and walk with her in the way of Christ? With the help of God, we will. In baptism Mila begins her journey in faith. You speak for her today. Will you care for her, and help her to take her place within the life and worship of Christ’s church? With the help of God, we will. We stand

New Testament Reading

Acts 16.9-15 read by Alex McLelland

9

During the night Paul had a vision: there stood a man of Macedonia pleading with him and saying, ‘Come over to Macedonia and help us.’ 10When he had seen the vision, we immediately tried to cross over to Macedonia, being convinced that God had called us to proclaim the good news to them. 11 We set sail from Troas and took a straight course to Samothrace, the following day to Neapolis,12and from there to Philippi, which is a leading city of the district of Macedonia and a Roman colony. We remained in this city for some days. 13On the sabbath day we went outside the gate by the river, where we supposed there was a place of prayer; and we sat down and spoke to the women who had gathered there. 14A certain woman named Lydia, a worshipper of God, was listening to us; she was from the city of Thyatira and a dealer in purple cloth. The Lord opened her heart to listen eagerly to what was said by Paul. 15When she and her household were baptized, she urged us, saying, ‘If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come and stay at my home.’ And she prevailed upon us. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Silence We stand

Hymn This is the truth which we proclaim, God makes a promise firm and sure; marked by this sign made in his name, here for a sickness, God's own cure. This is the grave in which we lie; dead to a world of sin and shame, raised with our Lord, to self we die and live to praise God's holy name. This is the sacrament of birth; sealed by a saviour’s death for sin, trust in his mercy all on earth, open your hearts and let him in! This is the covenant of grace God, to the nations, shows his love; people of every tribe and race, born, by his spirit, from above This is the badge we proudly wear; washed by our God comma the three-in-one; welcomed, in fellowship, we share hope of eternal life begun. Gospel Reading

Alleluia, alleluia. Alleluia, alleluia. Jesus said, ‘All who see the Son and believe in him may have eternal life; and I will raise them up on the last day.’ Alleluia, alleluia. Alleluia, alleluia. Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. Glory to you, O Lord

John 6:40

John 14.23-29 23

Jesus answered him, ‘Those who love me will keep my word, and my Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them. 24Whoever does not love me does not keep my words; and the word that you hear is not mine, but is from the Father who sent me. 25 ‘I have said these things to you while I am still with you. 26But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything, and remind you of all that I have said to you. 27Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid. 28You heard me say to you, “I am going away, and I am coming to you.” If you loved me, you would rejoice that I am going to the Father, because the Father is greater than I. 29And now I have told you this before it occurs, so that when it does occur, you may believe. This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ After an opening prayer, we sit

Sermon The Right Reverend Colin Buchanan, Assistant Bishop Silence We stand We stand and face west as the Minister, parents and godparents move to the font.

Decision The minister addresses the parents and godparents In baptism, God calls us out of darkness into his marvellous light. To follow Christ means dying to sin and rising to new life with him. Therefore I ask: Do you reject the devil and all rebellion against God? I reject them. Do you renounce the deceit and corruption of evil? I renounce them. Do you repent of the sins that separate us from God and neighbour? I repent of them. Do you turn to Christ as Saviour? I turn to Christ. Do you submit to Christ as Lord? I submit to Christ. 8

Do you come to Christ, the way, the truth and the life? I come to Christ. The minister marks Mila with the sign of the cross, in oil Christ claims you for his own. Receive the sign of his cross. Do not be ashamed to confess the faith of Christ crucified. Fight valiantly as a disciple of Christ against sin, the world and the devil, and remain faithful to Christ to the end of your life. May almighty God deliver you from the powers of darkness, restore in you the image of his glory, and lead you in the light and obedience of Christ.

Prayer over the water Praise God who made heaven and earth, who keeps his promise for ever. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give him thanks and praise. Almighty God, who son Jesus Christ was baptised in the river Jordan: we thank you for the gift of water to cleanse and revive us. We thank you that through the waters of the Red Sea you led your people out of slavery to freedom in the promised land. We thank you that through the deep waters of death you brought your Son, and raised him to life in triumph. Bless this water, that your servant who is washed in it may be made one with Christ in his death and in his resurrection, to be cleansed and delivered from all sin. Send your Holy Spirit upon Mila. Bring her to new birth in the household of faith, and raise her with Christ to full and eternal life; for all might, Majesty, authority, and power are yours, now and forever. Amen.

Profession of Faith My sisters and brothers, I ask you to profess, together with these candidates, the faith of the Church. Do you believe and trust in God the Father? I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Do you believe and trust in his Son Jesus Christ? I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. Do you believe and trust in the Holy Spirit? I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Baptism I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. May God, who has received you by baptism into his Church, pour upon you the riches of his grace, that within the company of Christ’s pilgrim people you may be renewed daily by his anointing Spirit, and come to the inheritance of the saints in glory. Amen. We sit and the parents and godparents return to their places

Prayers of Penitence Christ died to sin once for all, and now he lives to God. Let us renew our resolve to have done with all that is evil and confess our sins in penitence and faith. Silence Father eternal, giver of light and grace, we have sinned against you and against our neighbour, in what we have thought, in what we have said and done, through ignorance, through weakness, through our own deliberate fault. We have wounded your love and marred your image in us. We are sorry and ashamed, and repent of all our sins. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, who died for us, forgive us all that is past; and lead us out from darkness to walk as children of light. Amen. May the God of all mercies cleanse you from your sins, and restore you in his image to the praise and glory of his name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayers of Intercession Led by Michael Stanlick In the power of the Spirit and in union with Christ, let us pray to the Father. After each section either of these responses may be used: Lord in your mercy Hear our prayer.

Lord, hear us. Lord, graciously hear us.

Merciful Father, accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen

Welcome of the baptised There is one Lord, one faith, one baptism: by one Spirit we are all baptized into one body. We welcome Mila into the fellowship of faith; we are children of the same heavenly Father; we welcome you. We stand

Giving and Receiving Peace The risen Christ came and stood among his disciples and said, ‘Peace be with you.’ Then were they glad when they saw the Lord. Allelluia. The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. We offer one another a sign of God’s peace

Hymn During this hymn a collection is taken The gifts of the people are presented and the table set with bread and wine See, what a morning, gloriously bright, with the dawning of hope in Jerusalem ; folded the grave clothes, tomb filled with light, as the angels announce Christ is risen ! See God’s salvation plan, wrought in love, borne in pain, paid in sacrifice, fulfilled in Christ, the Man, for he lives : Christ is risen from the dead ! See Mary weeping, ‘Where is he laid ? ’ as in sorrow she turns from the empty tomb ; hears a voice speaking, calling her name ; it’s the Master, the Lord raised to life again ! The voice that spans the years, speaking life, stirring hope, bringing peace to us, will sound till he appears, for he lives : Christ is risen from the dead !

John 20:19.20

One with the Father, Ancient of Days, through the Spirit who clothes faith with certainty ; honour and blessing, glory and praise to the King crowned with power and authority ! And we are raised with him, death is dead, love has won, Christ has conquered ; and we shall reign with him, for he lives : Christ is risen from the dead ! Stuart Townend (b. 1963) and Keith Getty (b. 1974) SP 80

Prayer of Preparation Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation. In your loving care you spread before us the table of life and give us the cup of salvation to drink. Keep us always in the fold of our Saviour and our Shepherd, your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Blessed be God for ever.

Great Thanksgiving Prayer

Prayer E

We give you thanks and praise for the gospel we have received. Christ died for our sins. Alleluia. He is risen indeed. Alleluia. Death comes to all through Adam, and sin reigns for a time. New life without end comes through Christ, and he reigns for ever. Alleluia. He is risen indeed. Alleluia. Death, where is your victory? Death, where is your sting? Death is swallowed up in victory, 13

the victory you give us in Christ. Alleluia. He is risen indeed. Alleluia. We have been cruciďŹ ed with Christ, and live his risen life, to praise you for ever with angels and archangels. for ever praising you and singing:

We praise and bless you, loving Father, through Jesus Christ, our Lord; and as we obey his command, send your Holy Spirit, that broken bread and wine outpoured may be for us the body and blood of your dear Son. On the night before he died he had supper with his friends and, taking bread, he praised you. He broke the bread, gave it to them and said: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me. When supper was ended he took the cup of wine. Again he praised you, gave it to them and said: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. So, father, we remember all the Jesus did, in him we plead with confidence his sacrifice made once for all upon the cross. Bringing before you the bread of life and cup of salvation, we proclaim his death and resurrection until he comes in glory.

14

Great is the mystery of faith: Christ has died: Christ is risen: Christ will come again. Lord of all life, help us to work together for that day when your kingdom comes and justice and mercy will be seen in all the earth. Look with favour on your people, gather us in your loving arms and bring us with all the saints to feast at your table in heaven. Through Christ, and with Christ, and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory are yours, O loving father, for ever and ever. Amen. We sit or kneel Silence

The Lord’s Prayer As our Saviour taught us, so we pray: Our Father in heaven hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.

Breaking of the Bread We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread.

15

Giving of Communion Alleluia. Christ our Passover has been sacrificed for us. Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia. As the assistants receive communion we sing:

Stewards will direct you to the communion distribution points. To indicate your wish to receive a blessing, please bring this service sheet with you. Please indicate if you would like a gluten free wafer or non-alcoholic wine. We remain seated

Hymn I danced in the morning when the world was begun, and I danced in the moon and the stars and the sun, and I came down from heaven and I danced on the earth. At Bethlehem I had my birth.

Dance, then, wherever you may be; I am the Lord of the Dance, said he. And I'll lead you all, wherever you may be, and I'll lead you all in the Dance, said he. I danced for the scribe and the Pharisee, but they would not dance and they would not follow me; I danced for the fishermen, for James and John; they came with me and the Dance went on. I danced on the Sabbath and I cured the lame, the holy people said it was a shame; they whipped and they stripped and they hung me on high; and they left me there on a cross to die. 16

I danced on a Friday when the sky turned black; it's hard to dance with the devil on your back; they buried my body and they thought I'd gone, but I am the Dance, and I still go on. They cut me down and I leapt up high, I am the life that'll never, never die; I'll live in you if you'll live in me; I am the Lord of the Dance said he.

Million Dreams from The Greatest Showman

Hymn Rejoice! The Lord is King, your Lord and King adore; mortals, give thanks and sing, and triumph evermore:

Lift up your heart, lift up your voice; rejoice, again I say, rejoice. Jesus the Saviour reigns, the God of truth and love; when he had purged our stains, he took his seat above:

17

His kingdom cannot fail; he rules o’er earth and heaven; the keys of death and hell are to our Jesus given: He sits at God’s right hand till all his foes submit, and bow to his command, and fall beneath his feet: Rejoice in glorious hope; Jesus the judge shall come, and take his servants up to their eternal home:

We soon shall hear the archangel’s voice; the trump of God shall sound: rejoice!

Words: Charles Wesley (1707-1788) Tune: Gopsal CP563
