Welcome to Bradford Cathedral The seat of the Bishop of Leeds
Our purpose is to serve Jesus Christ as a vibrant community of worship and mission enriching the City, the Diocese and further afield. A very warm welcome to Bradford Cathedral for this service, particularly if you are visiting or with us for the first time. We hope you will stay and enjoy refreshments with us after the service, which will be served at the West End of the Cathedral. Please join in with saying or singing the words in bold type in this order of service, and sit or stand as directed if you are able. Large print copies are available from the stewards at the main door. Children’s Space meets in the Parish Room. Please meet at the children’s quiet corner during the opening hymn. The Cathedral Choir leads worship this morning. The choral setting is the Missa Brevis by the early Italian composer Giovanni Gabrieli (1557-1612) and the Bradford Gloria by Robert Busiakiewicz.(b1990). If you need to, please sit down at any point in the service, even if the instruction is to stand. It is important for you to be comfortable and safe. We shall be pleased to help you if you wish to receive a gluten-free wafer, nonalcoholic wine or to have communion brought to you in your seat; please speak with one of the stewards at the main door before the start of the service. If you would prefer to receive a blessing rather than bread and wine, please bring this service booklet with you to the communion rail. If you use a hearing aid, please turn the setting to ‘T’ in order to take advantage of the induction loop in the Cathedral. Please check that you have switched off your mobile phone. Lavatories, including disabled facilities, are available towards the back of church. In the event of an emergency, please remain calm and seated. Stewards will direct you out of the Cathedral.

Welcome and notices The Very Reverend Jerry Lepine, Dean of Bradford We stand Silence In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Hymn Harvest offerings are taken up during the hymn. Please follow the children up to the Chancel steps where the clergy will receive your donations. We plough the fields, and scatter the good seed on the land, but it is fed and watered by God’s almighty hand: he sends the snow in winter, the warmth to swell the grain, the breezes, and the sunshine, and soft, refreshing rain. All good gifts around us are sent from heaven above; then thank the Lord, O thank the Lord, for all his love. He only is the maker of all things near and far; he paints the wayside flower, he lights the evening star; the winds and waves obey him, by him the birds are fed; much more to us, his children, he gives our daily bread. We thank thee then, O Father, for all things bright and good, the seed-time and the harvest, our life, our health, our food. Accept the gifts we offer for all thy love imparts, and, what thou most desirest, our humble, thankful hearts. Words: Matthias Cloudias, tr Jane Montgomery Campbell Tune: Wir Pflßgen CP275

The Greeting The Lord of all creation be with you and also with you. The earth has yielded its harvest; God, our God, has blessed us. You visit the earth with showers; and bless the increase of it. Prayers of Penitence Let us confess our forgetfulness of the needs of the poor, and repent of the ways we waste the resources of the world. Creator God, for times when we have used your gifts carelessly, and acted ungratefully. In your mercy: forgive us and help us. We belong to a people who are full and satisďŹ ed, but ignore the cry of the hungry. In your mercy: forgive us and help us. We are thoughtless, and do not care enough for the world you have made. In your mercy: forgive us and help us. We store up goods for ourselves alone, as if there were no God and no heaven. In your mercy: forgive us and help us. Silence May God who loved the world so much that he sent his son to be our Saviour forgive you your sins and make you holy to serve him in the world, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. 5Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near. 6Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 7And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. 8 Finally, beloved, whatever is true, whatever is honourable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. 9Keep on doing the things that you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, and the God of peace will be with you. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Silence We stand
Hymn Praise, O praise our God and King; hymns of adoration sing: For his mercies still endure ever faithful, ever sure. Praise him that he made the sun day by day his course to run: And the silver moon by might, shining with her gentle light: Praise him that he gave the rain to mature the swelling grain: 6
And hath bid the fruitful field crops of precious increase yield: Praise him for our harvest-store; he hath filled the garner-floor: And for richer food than this, pledge of everlasting bliss: Glory to our bounteous King; glory let creation sing: Glory to the Father, Son, and blest Spirit,Three in One. When they found him on the other side of the lake, they said to him, ‘Rabbi, when did you come here?’ 26Jesus answered them, ‘Very truly, I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves. 27Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For it is on him that God the Father has set his seal.’ 28Then they said to him, ‘What must we do to perform the works of God?’ 29Jesus answered them, ‘This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.’ 30So they said to him, ‘What sign are you going to give us then, so that we may see it and believe you? What work are you performing? 31Our ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, “He gave them bread from heaven to eat.” ’ 32Then Jesus said to them, ‘Very truly, I tell you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. 33For the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.’ 34They said to him, ‘Sir, give us this bread always.’ 7
35
Jesus said to them, ‘I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. After an opening prayer, we sit.

The Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. 8
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. We sit or kneel

Hymn During the hymn a collection is taken; the gifts of the people are presented, and the Table is set with bread and wine. Sing of the Lord’s goodness, Father of all wisdom, come to him and bless his name. Mercy he has shown us, his love is for ever, faithful to the end of days. Come then, all you nations, sing of your Lord’s goodness, melodies of praise and thanks to God. Ring out the Lord’s glory, praise him with your music, worship him and bless his name. Power he has wielded, honour is his garment, risen from the snares of death. His word he has spoken, one bread he has broken, new life he now gives to all. Courage in our darkness, comfort in our sorrow, Spirit of our God most high; solace for the weary, pardon for the sinner, splendour of the living God. Praise him with your singing, praise him with the trumpet, praise God with the lute and harp; praise him with the cymbals, praise him with your dancing, praise God till the end of days. Come then, all you nations … Ernest Sands (b. 1949) Tune: SING OF THE LORD’S GOODNESS, Ernest Sands and Christopher Walker (b. 1947) SP 309

Great Thanksgiving Prayer
Prayer B
It is indeed right and good to give you thanks and praise, almighty God and Father, through Jesus Christ your Son. Through him you have created us in your own image, and made us stewards of your good creation. Through him you teach us to exult in the birds of the air, the lilies of the field, the precious and life-giving crops of the earth. Through him you free us from the slavery of sin, giving him to die upon the cross and to rise again for our salvation. Through him, you begin your work of new creation, as we look for a new heaven and a new earth in which your righteousness dwells. Therefore, we join with angels and archangels, and give voice to every creature under heaven, for ever praising you and singing: Choir
Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus Dominus Deus Sabaoth. Pleni sunt cĂŚli et terra gloria tua. Hosanna in excelsis. Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini. Hosanna in excelsis. Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Lord, you are holy indeed, the source of all holiness grant that by the power of your Holy Spirit, and according to your holy will, these gifts of bread and wine may be to us the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ; 11
who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread and gave you thanks; he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me. In the same way, after supper he took the cup and gave you thanks; he gave it to them, saying: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. Christ is the bread of life: When we eat this bread and drink this cup we proclaim your death, Lord Jesus, until you come in glory. And so, Father, calling to mind his death on the cross, his perfect sacrifice made once for the sins of the whole world; rejoicing in his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension, and looking for his coming in glory, we celebrate this memorial of our redemption. As we offer you this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, we bring before you this bread and this cup and we thank you for counting us worthy to stand in your presence and serve you. Send the Holy Spirit on your people and gather into one in your kingdom all who share this one bread and one cup, so that we, in the company of all the saints, may praise and glorify you for ever, through Jesus Christ our Lord; by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory be yours, almighty Father, for ever and ever. Amen We sit or kneel Silence

The Lord’s Prayer Looking for the coming of his kingdom, as our Saviour taught us, so we pray Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.
Breaking of the Bread We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread.
Giving of Communion Come, to receive life from the Source of all being. Come, to share creation with the Creator of all things living. Come, to be renewed by the Spirit who makes all things new. Come, feast with God in faith and thanksgiving. As the lay ministers receive communion, the choir sings Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi: miserere nobis. Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi: miserere nobis. Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi: dona nobis pacem. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sin of the world: have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sin of the world: have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sin of the world: grant us thy peace. Stewards will direct you to receive communion. Please indicate if you would like a gluten-free wafer or non-alcoholic wine. To indicate your wish to receive a blessing, please bring this service sheet with you.

Communion Motet For the beauty of the earth, for the beauty of the skies, for the love which from our birth over and around us lies, Lord of all, to thee we raise this our joyful hymn of praise. For the beauty of each hour of the day and of the night, hill and vale and tree and flower, sun and moon and stars of light, Lord of all, to thee we raise this our joyful hymn of praise. For the joy of human love, brother, sister, parent, child, friends on earth and friends above, for all gentle thoughts and mild, Lord of all, to thee we raise this our joyful hymn of praise. For each perfect gift of thine, to our race so freely given, graces human and divine, flowers of earth and buds of heaven, Lord of all, to thee we raise this our joyful hymn of praise. John Rutter (b 1945)
Communion Hymn Bread is blessed and broken, wine is blessed and poured: Take this and remember Christ the Lord. Share the food of heaven earth can not afford. Here is grace in essence – Christ the Lord. Know yourself forgiven, find yourself restored, meet a friend for ever Christ the Lord.

God has kept his promise sealed by sign and word: Here for those who want him – Christ the Lord. Words: John L Bell (b1949) & Graham Maule (b1958) Tune: Grace in Essence SP214
Prayers after Communion Creator God, you give seed for us to sow, and bread for us to eat; make us thankful for what we have received and generous in supplying the needs of others so all the world may give you thanks and glory, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Lord of the harvest, with joy we have offered thanksgiving for your love made known in creation and have shared in the bread and the wine of the kingdom: by your grace plant within us a reverence for all that you give us and make us generous and wise stewards of the good things we enjoy; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. We stand
Hymn Creator God, the world around declares your glory - flower and tree, the evening sky and torrent's sound, the mountain stream and rolling sea. Yet all this beauty cannot show the God whom we can truly know. Composer God, all music sings your praise - your power, your majesty in drum and trumpet, flute and strings, in choir and song and symphony. Yet music which inspires our praise can never fathom all your ways.
15
Designer God, in shape and form the beauty you inspire is shown: in line and colour, etched or drawn, in sculpture, painting, glass and stone. Yet all these talents can't express the full truth of your loveliness. Mysterious God, though all the arts of nature or of human skill may move us: yet our longing hearts are never satisfied until in Jesus Christ you show your face: a God of love and truth and grace. Words: Brian Hoare (b1935) Tune: Melita SP239
The Blessing May God our creator, who clothes the lilies and feeds the birds of the air, bestow on you his care and increase the harvest of your righteousness; and the blessing of God almighty the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. Amen.
The Dismissal Tend the earth, care for God’s good creation and bring forth the fruits of righteousness. Go in peace to love and serve the Lord. In the name of Christ. Amen. Voluntary
Allegro (i) from Symphony 6 - C.M. Widor
The concluding organ voluntary is offered as part of our worship. Please remain for refreshments, served at the back of the Cathedral.
