Welcome to Bradford Cathedral The seat of the Bishop of Leeds

Our purpose is to serve Jesus Christ as a vibrant community of worship and mission enriching the City, the Diocese and further afield. ❖ A very warm welcome to Bradford Cathedral for this service, particularly if you are visiting or with us for the first time. We hope you will stay and enjoy refreshments with us after the service, which will be served at the West End of the Cathedral. ❖ Please join in with saying or singing the words in bold type in this order of service, and sit or stand as directed if you are able. Large print copies are available from the stewards at the main door. ❖ Children’s Space takes place in the Parish Room. Please take your child to the Children’s area by the north door during the first hymn. They return and sit together during the administration of Communion. ❖ The Cathedral Choir leads this morning’s worship. The choral setting is the Short Communion Service by the English composer, Adrian Batten (c1591-c1637). ❖ If you need to, please sit down at any point in the service, even if the instruction is to stand. It is important for you to be comfortable and safe. ❖ We will be pleased to help you if you wish to receive a gluten-free wafer, nonalcoholic wine or to have communion brought to you in your seat; please speak with one of the stewards at the main door before the start of the service. If you would prefer to receive a blessing rather than bread and wine, please bring this service booklet with you to the communion rail. ❖ If you use a hearing aid, please turn the setting to ‘T’ in order to take advantage of the induction loop in the Cathedral. ❖ Please check that you have switched off your mobile phone. ❖ Lavatories, including disabled facilities, are available towards the back of church. ❖ In the event of an emergency, please remain calm and seated. Stewards will direct you out of the Cathedral.

Hymn Children leave for Children’s Space

Lift high the cross, the love of Christ proclaim till all the world adore his sacred name. Come, let us follow where our Captain trod, our King victorious, Christ the Son of God: O Lord, once lifted on the glorious tree, as thou hast promised, draw us unto thee: Let every race and every language tell of him who saves our souls from death and hell: From farthest regions let them homage bring, and on his cross adore their Saviour King: Set up thy throne, that earth’s despair may cease beneath the shadow of its healing peace: For thy blest cross which doth for all atone creation’s praises rise before thy throne: Words: G W Kitchin and M R Newbolt Tune: Crucifer CP499 (omit*)

Prayers of Penitence

Hear us O Lord have mercy upon us: for we have sinned against thee. Choir

Innocent, captive, taken unresisting falsely accused, and for us sinners sentenced, save us, we pray thee, Jesu our Redeemer. Hear us O Lord have mercy upon us: for we have sinned against thee.

Silence God shows his love for us in that, while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Let us then show our love for him by confessing our sins in penitence and faith. Choir

Kyrie Eleison, Christe Eleison Kyrie Eleison

Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.

Silence Father eternal, giver of light and grace, we have sinned against you and against our neighbour, in what we have thought, in what we have said and done, through ignorance, through weakness, through our own deliberate fault. We have wounded your love and marred your image in us. We are sorry and ashamed, and repent of all our sins. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, who died for us, forgive us all that is past; and lead us out from darkness to walk as children of light. Amen.

4

Almighty God, who in Jesus Christ has given us a kingdom that cannot be destroyed, forgive you your sins, open your eyes to God's truth, strengthen you to do God's will and give you the joy of his kingdom, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer of the day The president introduces a period of silent prayer Gracious Father, you gave up your Son out of love for the world: lead us to ponder the mysteries of his passion, that we may know eternal peace through the shedding of our Saviour’s blood, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Old Testament Reading

Isaiah 43.16-21

16

Thus says the Lord, who makes a way in the sea, a path in the mighty waters, 17 who brings out chariot and horse, army and warrior; they lie down, they cannot rise, they are extinguished, quenched like a wick: 18 Do not remember the former things, or consider the things of old. 19 I am about to do a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert. 20 The wild animals will honour me, the jackals and the ostriches; for I give water in the wilderness, rivers in the desert, to give drink to my chosen people, 21 the people whom I formed for myself so that they might declare my praise. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 5

Psalm 126

Those who sow in tears shall reap with songs of joy. When the Lord restored the for- / tunes of / Zion, then were we like / those who / dream. Then was our mouth / filled with / laughter and our tongue with / songs of / joy.

Those who sow in tears shall reap with songs of joy. Then said they a- / mong the / nations, 'The Lord has done / great things / for them.' The Lord has indeed done great / things for / us, and therefore / we re- / joiced.

Those who sow in tears shall reap with songs of joy. Restore again our for- / tunes O / Lord, as the river beds / of the / desert. Those who / sow in / tears shall reap with / songs of / joy. Those who go out weeping, / bearing . the / seed, will come back with shouts of joy, and bring their / sheaves with / them.

Those who sow in tears shall reap with songs of joy.

Gospel Acclamation

Praise to you, O Christ, King of eternal glory. Praise to you, O Christ, King of eternal glory. Christ humbled himself and became obedient unto death, even death on a cross. Therefore God has highly exalted him and given him the name that is above every name. . Praise to you, O Christ, King of eternal glory.

Gospel Reading

John 12.1-8

Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. Glory to you, O Lord. Six days before the Passover Jesus came to Bethany, the home of Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. 2There they gave a dinner for him. Martha served, and Lazarus was one of those at the table with him. 3Mary took a pound of costly perfume made of pure nard, anointed Jesus’ feet, and wiped them with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. 4But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (the one who was about to betray him), said,5‘Why was this perfume not sold for three hundred denarii and the money given to the poor?’ 6(He said this not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief; he kept the common purse and used to steal what was put into it.) 7Jesus said, ‘Leave her alone. She bought it so that she might keep it for the day of my burial. 8You always have the poor with you, but you do not always have me.’ This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. After an opening prayer, we sit

We stand

The Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. We sit or kneel

Prayers of Intercession

led by Michael Stanlick

In the power of the Spirit and in union with Christ, let us pray to the Father. After each section this, or another, response is used Lord, in your mercy hear our prayer. At the end Merciful Father, accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

We stand

Giving and Receiving Peace Once we were far off, but now in union with Christ Jesus we have been brought near through the shedding of christ's blood, for he is our peace. The peace of the Lord be always with you and also with you. We offer one another a sign of God’s peace

Hymn During this hymn a collection is taken The gifts of the people are presented, and the Table is set with bread and wine Beneath the cross of Jesus I fain would take my stand, the shadow of a mighty rock within a weary land; a home within a wilderness, a rest upon the way, from the burning of the noontide heat, and the burden of the day. Upon that cross of Jesus mine eye at times can see the very dying form of one who suffered there for me; and from my smitten heart, with tears, two wonders I confess: the wonders of his glorious love, and my own worthlessness. O take, O cross, thy shadow, for my abiding place; I ask no other sunshine than the sunshine of his face; content to let the world go by, to know no gain nor loss; my sinful self my only shame, my glory all, the cross. Words: Elizabeth Clephane Tune: St Christopher CP105

Prayer at the Preparation of the Table Look up on us in mercy not in judgement; draw us from hatred to love; make the frailty of our praise a dwelling place for your glory. Amen.

Great Thanksgiving Prayer

Prayer C

It is indeed right, it is our duty and our joy, at all times and in all places to give you thanks and praise, holy Father, heavenly King, almighty and eternal God, through Jesus Christ our Lord. And now we give you thanks because, for our salvation, he was obedient even to death on the cross. The tree of shame was made the tree of glory; and where life was lost, there life has been restored. Therefore with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we proclaim your great and glorious name, for ever praising you and singing: Choir

Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of Hosts, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Glory be to thee, O Lord Most High. Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. All glory be to you, our heavenly Father, who, in your tender mercy, gave your only Son our Saviour Jesus Christ to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption; 10

who made there by his one oblation of himself once offered a full, perfect and sufficient sacrifice, oblation and satisfaction for the sins of the whole world; he instituted, and in his holy gospel commanded us to continue, a perpetual memory of his precious death until he comes again. Hear us, merciful Father, we humbly pray, and grant that, by the power of your Holy Spirit, we receiving these gifts of your creation, this bread and this wine, according to your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ’s holy institution, in remembrance of his death and passion, may be partakers of his most blessed body and blood; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread and gave you thanks; he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me. In the same way, after supper he took the cup and gave you thanks; he gave it to them, saying: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.

Therefore, Lord and heavenly Father, in remembrance of the precious death and passion, the mighty resurrection and glorious ascension of your dear Son Jesus Christ, we offer you through him this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Grant that by his merits and death, and through faith in his blood, we and all your Church may receive forgiveness of our sins and all other benefits of his passion. Although we are unworthy, through our manifold sins, to offer you any sacrifice, yet we pray that you will accept this 11

the duty and service that we owe. Do not weigh our merits, but pardon our offences, and fill us all who share in this holy communion with your grace and heavenly blessing; through Jesus Christ our Lord, by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory be yours, almighty Father, for ever and ever. Amen. We sit or kneel Silence

The Lord’s Prayer Trusting in the compassion of God, as our Saviour taught us, so we pray Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.

Breaking of the Bread We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread.

Invitation to Communion Jesus is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. Blessed are those who are called to his supper. Lord, I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word, and I shall be healed. 12

Prayer Most merciful Lord, your love compels us to come in. Our hands were unclean, our hearts were unprepared; we were not fit even to eat the crumbs from under your table. But you, Lord, are the God of our salvation, and share your bread with sinners. So cleanse and feed us with the precious body and blood of your Son, that he may live in us and we in him; and that we, with the whole company of Christ, may sit and eat in your kingdom. Amen. As the ministers receive communion the choir sings O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world: have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world: grant us thy peace.

Stewards will direct you to the communion rail Please indicate if you would like a gluten-free wafer or non-alcoholic wine To indicate your wish to receive a blessing, please bring this service sheet with you

Communion motet God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten son, that whoso believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. John Stainer (1840–1901) from The Crucifixion St John 3: 16–17

Silence

Prayers after Communion Lord Jesus Christ, you have taught us that what we do for the least of our brothers and sisters we do also for you: give us the will to be the servant of others as you were the servant of all, and gave up your life and died for us, but are alive and reign, now and for ever. Amen.

13

We thank you, Lord, that you have fed us in this sacrament, united us with Christ, and given us a foretaste of the heavenly banquet prepared for all peoples. Amen. We stand

Hymn O Love that wilt not let me go, I rest my weary soul in thee; I give thee back the life I owe, that in thine ocean depths its flow may richer, fuller be. O light that followest all my way, I yield my flickering torch to thee; my heart restores its borrowed ray, that in thy sunshine’s blaze its day may brighter, fairer be. O joy that seekest me through pain, I cannot close my heart to thee; I trace the rainbow through the rain, and feel the promise is not vain, that morn shall tearless be. O cross that liftest up my head, I dare not ask to fly from thee; I lay in dust life’s glory dead, and from the ground there blossoms red life that shall endless be. Words: George Matheson Tune: St Margaret CP542

The Blessing Christ crucified draw you to himself, to find in him a sure ground for faith, a firm support for hope, and the assurance of sins forgiven; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. Amen.
