THIS COMING WEEK: The FLOWERS this week are given by Canon John Nowell to mark the 50th Anniversary of his Ordination to the Priesthood. Today is PENTECOST SUNDAY and also the final day of Thy Kingdom Come, when we welcome our Diocesan Bishop, the Rt Revd Nick Baines, who will lead and preach at the 10.15am Eucharist and also at Choral Evensong at 4pm, when the Ven Jonathan Gough, Archdeacon of Richmond & Craven will be installed as Honorary Canon of Bradford Cathedral. A SEMINAR WITH BISHOP NICK, will take place at 2.30pm. The theme will be ‘How should Christians approach an uncertain future?’ which is particularly relevant for the troubled times in which we live, where we cannot predict what lies ahead. Do stay and join in if you can. After the 10.15am service families are invited to join in MESSY PENTECOST from 12.30pm – 2pm. Come and join us for fun activities with food, crafts, Bible readings, singing and more. Create your own headband of paper flames ◊ Make a fire-wand and explore the Holy Spirit tunnel ◊ Write your own prayer dove to join our flock. It’s guaranteed to be fun! The SIDESMEN’S ANNUAL MEETING will follow the morning service at 12 noon in the Chapter House. MONDAY FELLOWSHIP meets tomorrow Monday 10th June at 2pm in the Parish Room when a talk will be given by Canon and Mrs Mitchell about their charity, "Bags of Difference", which raises money to subsidise the income of staff who work at Kisiizi Hospital in south-west Uganda. Bags made of locally-sourced cloth are cut into squares and sewn into bags by the hundred or so Ugandans who are involved in the scheme. The bags are then brought back to the UK and sold here, and there will be bags that can be purchased at the talk- so remember to bring some money if you don't want to miss out on this opportunity to buy a lovely new bag and help a hospital in Uganda! At the COFFEE CONCERT this Tuesday 11th June we will welcome Garreth Romain (Countertenor). Garreth and his family have been a big part of Bradford Cathedral for many years so do come and support him if you can. Coffee and Cake is from 10.30am and Garreth will begin his performance at 11am.
Gordon Stewart, Concert Organist, will be playing at this week’s WEDNESDAY@1 ORGAN RECITAL. The buffet lunch beforehand is from 12.30-12.55pm and the recital will start at 1pm. The lunch is £4 and the recital is free, but there is a retiring collection. Come along and enjoy and experience good food, good music and good company. MEMORIES! We know that so many of you have wonderful memories of past Cathedral events and things gone by and we would love to include these in our special exhibition, when we hope to create a memory timeline. So - on the sound desk we have left some luggage tags and if you could add a Cathedral memory with a date and leave it in the basket provided we'll put up for you when the exhibition launches. We’re really looking forward to this very special trip down memory lane and to seeing all of the memories, which we know will be so interesting. ************************************************************************************* The CATHEDRAL FESTIVAL is next Saturday 15th June This is going to be a fun-filled day with lots happening so do come and join us in our special street party. The day will start at 11am with a welcome from the Dean followed by Choral Matins at 11.15am. The Official Opening is at 11.45am and there will be activities from 12.15pm through to 9pm. Come along and have your face painted or your photograph taken in the Vintage Photobooth. Children can follow their own special Centenary Trail and there will be lots more things for them to do. There will also be many things for adults to enjoy, and there will be special trips up into the Ringing Chamber in the Bell Tower. Enjoy Afternoon Tea from 2.30pm – 4pm, find out about Bradford Cathedral’s history, learn about the Battle of the Steeple, and hear about what goes on in the Cathedral now – the list is endless! The day will continue after 6pm with a Come & Sing; Pick a Hymn, followed by a brass band and will end with Night Prayer at 9pm. Do come and join with us in this Bradford Cathedral’s first ever Cathedral Festival, which we hope will become a regular event in the Cathedral’s Calendar. There is also a ‘sign-up’ sheet on the sound desk for food to bring to the street party (ingredients to be listed on the day please.) Pick up a leaflet at the back of the Cathedral for the FULL PROGRAMME.
SEE YOU THERE ************************************************************************ CHOIR TOUR At the end of May, the Cathedral Choir went on tour to Germany, which was a huge success and wonderful experience for everyone who went. After the 10.15am Eucharist next Sunday 16th June, Alex Berry, our Director of Music will give a presentation to members of the congregation about what the choir got up to while they were abroad. This promises to be both informative and entertaining, so do stay if you can.
SUDAN There is the opportunity to meet those who went on recent encounter visits to our Link Diocese in Sudan tomorrow Monday June 10th, 7.30pm at St George's Church, Leeds. Pick up a leaflet at the back of the Cathedral and do go along if you can. Refreshments will be served from 7pm. Parking restrictions nearby do apply until 10pm, so please do allow time to walk from a car park or bus stop. PLACES OF WELCOME on Wednesdays is now every Wednesday from 2.30pm – 4pm. Canon Mandy does still need volunteers to help her and join the team and if you could offer an hour or so, and not necessarily each week, it would be a huge help to her. Please speak to either her or one of the Clergy to find out more. Thank you. ELIOT SMITH DANCE presents ‘Awaken’ on Wednesday 19th June at 7.30pm. This is a special ‘one-off’ performance to mark the Cathedral’s Centenary, which will feature a spectacular finale accompanied by live organ at the Cathedral. There is no admission charge – just pay what you feel – and more details are in our Centenary Brochure or on kalasangam.eventbrite.com or bradfordcathedral.churchsuite.com REFUGEE WEEK Refugee Week is a nationwide programme of arts, cultural and educational events that celebrate the contribution of refugees to the UK. Like many parts of the UK, Bradford has a proud tradition of welcoming people from across the globe, particularly those who have fled from their home countries as a result of persecution. Celebrations during Refugee Week arise from a coming together of members of refugee and asylum seeker communities and those who work amongst them. Here at the Cathedral we're hosting a film showing of 'The Dream of Shahrazad' on Thursday 20th June at 7pm and an exhibition entitled 'Burma, Bangladesh, Bradford: A Celebration of Integration' running from the 17th - 22nd June. You can pick up a full programme of events from the Cathedral welcome desk or download one from https://www.bradfordcathedral.org/whats-on/refugee-week-2019/ COMING UP Look out also for upcoming talks with Professor Neil Small at the University of Bradford ("Flourishing City: Healthy City") on Monday 8th July; and three exciting speakers at "A Conversation Between Faiths" on Monday 15th July. All talks are free to attend and you can reserve your place on our Eventbrite page, or just turn up! MICHELLE SIMPSON is to cycle the 150 mile long Coast to Coast route from Seascale to Whitby (via the Lake District!) on Saturday 29th June in aid of the Sue Ryder Manorlands and Wheatfields hospices. If you would like to sponsor her, there is a sponsor form on the sound desk. Thank you. ANY FINALLY - A SPECIAL THANKYOU to all our volunteers in this special volunteer week. The Cathedral would not be the same without our many volunteers who give so generously of their time throughout the year and we want to say “THANK YOU SO MUCH” for all you do in this special place.
