Welcome to Bradford Cathedral The seat of the Bishop of Leeds
Our purpose is to serve Jesus Christ as a vibrant community of worship and mission enriching the City, the Diocese and further afield. A very warm welcome to Bradford Cathedral for this service, particularly if you are visiting or with us for the first time. We hope you will stay and enjoy refreshments with us after the service, which will be served at the West End of the Cathedral. Please join in with saying or singing the words in bold type in this order of service, and sit or stand as directed if you are able. Large print copies are available from the stewards at the main door. Children’s Space meets today for children of all ages. Please make your way to the door during the first hymn. The children return to receive communion. The Cathedral Choir lead our worship. The Choral setting is the Communion Service in F by Harold Darke (1888–1976). If you need to, please sit down at any point in the service, even if the instruction is to stand. It is more important for you to be comfortable and safe. We will be pleased to help you if you wish to receive a gluten-free wafer, nonalcoholic wine or to have communion brought to you in your seat; please speak with one of the stewards at the main door before the start of the service. If you would prefer to receive a blessing rather than bread and wine, please bring this service booklet with you to the sanctuary rail. If you use a hearing aid, please turn the setting to ‘T’ in order to take advantage of the induction loop in the Cathedral. Please check that you have switched off your mobile phone. Lavatories, including disabled facilities, are available towards the back of church. In the event of an emergency, please remain calm and seated. Stewards will direct you out of the Cathedral.

Hymn God is working his purpose out as year succeeds to year, God is working his purpose out and the time is drawing near; nearer and nearer draws the time the time that shall surely be, when the earth shall be filled with the glory of God as the waters cover the sea. From utmost east to utmost west wherever feet have trod, by the mouth of many messengers goes forth the voice of God, ‘Give ear to me, ye continents, ye isles, give ear to me, that the earth may be filled with the glory of God as the waters cover the sea.’ What can we do to work God’s work, to prosper and increase the love of God in all mankind, the reign of the Prince of peace? What can we do to hasten the time, the time that shall surely be, when the earth shall be filled with the glory of God as the waters cover the sea.

March we forth in the strength of God with the banner of Christ unfurled, that the light of the glorious gospel of truth may shine throughout the world; fight we the fight with sorrow and sin, to set their captives free, that the earth may be filled with the glory of God as the waters cover the sea. All we can do is nothing worth unless God blesses the deed; vainly we hope for the harvest-tide till God gives life to the seed; yet nearer and nearer draws the time, the time that shall surely be, when the earth shall be filled with the glory of God as the waters cover the sea. Words: Arthur C Ainger (1841-1919 Tune: Benson CP444
Greeting The Lord is with us. Let us praise his name. We remain standing as the choir sings
Gloria in Excelsis Glory be to God on high, and in earth peace, good will towards men. We praise thee, we bless thee, we worship thee, we glorify thee, we give thanks to thee for thy great glory, O Lord God, heavenly King, God the Father Almighty. O Lord, the only-begotten Son, Jesu Christ; O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. Thou that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. Thou that takest away the sins of the world, receive our prayer. Thou that sittest at the right hand of God the Father, have mercy upon us. For thou only art holy; thou only art the Lord; thou only, O Christ, with the Holy Ghost, art most high in the glory of God the Father.

New Testament Reading
Habakkuk 1.1-4, 2.1-4
The oracle that the prophet Habakkuk saw. 2
O Lord, how long shall I cry for help, and you will not listen? Or cry to you ‘Violence!’ and you will not save? 3 Why do you make me see wrongdoing and look at trouble? Destruction and violence are before me; strife and contention arise. 4 So the law becomes slack and justice never prevails. The wicked surround the righteous— therefore judgement comes forth perverted. I will stand at my watch-post, and station myself on the rampart; I will keep watch to see what he will say to me, and what he will answer concerning my complaint. 2 Then the Lord answered me and said: Write the vision; make it plain on tablets, so that a runner may read it. 3 For there is still a vision for the appointed time; it speaks of the end, and does not lie. If it seems to tarry, wait for it; it will surely come, it will not delay. 4 Look at the proud! Their spirit is not right in them, but the righteous live by their faith. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 5

Hymn My God, accept my heart this day, and make it always thine, that I from thee no more may stray, no more from thee decline. Before the cross of him who died, behold, I prostrate fall; let every sin be crucified, and Christ be all in all. Anoint me with thy heavenly grace, and seal me for thine own; that I may see thy glorious face, and worship near thy throne. Let every thought and work and word to thee be ever given: Then life shall be thy service, Lord, and death the gate of heaven. All glory to the Father be, all glory to the Son, all glory, Holy Ghost, to thee, while endless ages run. Words: Matthew Bridges (1800-1894) Tune: St Peter CP338
Gospel Reading
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. Choir
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, one God, who was, and who is, and who is to come, the Almighty. Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. Glory to you, O Lord
Luke 17.5-10 5
The apostles said to the Lord, ‘Increase our faith!’ 6The Lord replied, ‘If you had faith the size of a mustard seed, you could say to this mulberry tree, “Be uprooted and planted in the sea”, and it would obey you. 6

‘Who among you would say to your slave who has just come in from ploughing or tending sheep in the field, “Come here at once and take your place at the table”? 8Would you not rather say to him, “Prepare supper for me, put on your apron and serve me while I eat and drink; later you may eat and drink”? 9Do you thank the slave for doing what was commanded? 10So you also, when you have done all that you were ordered to do, say, “We are worthless slaves; we have done only what we ought to have done!” ’ This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. After an opening prayer, we sit
Sermon The Reverend Canon Mandy Coutts, Canon for Pastoral and Mission Development Silence We stand
Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.
7
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. We sit
Prayers of Penitence We have too often exchanged the worship of the living God for idols of our own imagining. As we gather to offer our praises to the holy and undivided Trinity, and to worship God in spirit and in truth, let us call to mind our sins. Silence We have not always worshipped God, our creator. Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. We have not always followed Christ, our Saviour. Christ, have mercy. Christ, have mercy We have not always trusted in the Spirit, our guide. Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy God, the Father of mercies, has reconciled the world to himself through the death and resurrection of his Son, Jesus Christ, not counting our trespasses against us, but sending his Holy Spirit to shed abroad his love among us. By the ministry of reconciliation entrusted by Christ to his Church, receive his pardon and peace to stand before him in his strength alone, this day and evermore. Amen.
8
Prayers of Intercession In the power of the Spirit and in union with Christ, let us pray to the Father. After each section this, or an alternative, response is used: Lord in your mercy hear our prayer. Merciful Father, accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.
We welcome visitors from Sudan - Mama Samira and Mama Heweya Giving and Receiving Peace Peace to you from God our heavenly Father. Peace from his Son Jesus Christ who is our peace. Peace from the Holy Spirit, the life-giver. The peace of God be always with you and also with you. We offer one another a sign of God’s peace
Hymn During this hymn a collection is taken The gifts of the people are presented and the table set with bread and wine O God in heaven, whose loving plan ordained for us our parents' care, and from the time our life began, the shelter of a home to share. Our Father, on the homes we love, send down your blessing from above. May young and old together know in Christ, the Lord of every day, that fellowship will mark our homes in joy and sorrow, work and play. Forgive the sins that mar our lives; our selfishness by love subdue; as parents, children, make us wise in glad obedience to you. 9
O Father, in our homes preside, and bless our housework with delight; in kindly ways be now our guide, on mirth and trouble spread your light. Words: Hugh Martin (1890-1964) CP535 Tune: Melita CP413
Prayer of Preparation Holy God, holy and strong, holy and immortal, give us the bread of everlasting life, and make us branches of the true vine. Amen.
Great Thanksgiving Prayer
It is indeed right, it is our duty and our joy, always and everywhere to give you thanks, holy Father, almighty and eternal God. For with your only-begotten Son and the Holy Spirit you are one God, one Lord. All that you reveal of your glory, the same we believe of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, without any difference or inequality. We, your holy Church, acclaim you, Father of majesty unbounded, your true and only Son, worthy of all worship, and the Holy Spirit, advocate and guide. Three Persons we adore, one in being and equal in majesty. And so with angels and archangels, with cherubim and seraphim, we sing for ever of your glory:

Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts, heaven and earth are full of thy glory Glory be to thee, O Lord most high Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Accept our praises, heavenly Father, through your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ, and as we follow his example and obey his command, grant that by the power of your Holy Spirit these gifts of bread and wine may be to us his body and his blood; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread and gave you thanks; he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me. In the same way, after supper he took the cup and gave you thanks; he gave it to them, saying: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. Therefore, heavenly Father, we remember his offering of himself made once for all upon the cross; we proclaim his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; we look for the coming of your kingdom, and with this bread and this cup we make the memorial of Christ your Son our Lord. Jesus Christ is Lord: Lord, by your cross and resurrection you have set us free. You are the Saviour of the world. Accept through him, our great high priest, this our sacrifice of thanks and praise, and as we eat and drink these holy gifts in the presence of your divine majesty, renew us by your Spirit, inspire us with your love and unite us in the body of your Son, 11
Jesus Christ our Lord. Through him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, with all who stand before you in earth and heaven, we worship you, Father almighty, in songs of everlasting praise: Blessing and honour and glory and power Be yours for ever and ever. Amen. We sit or kneel Silence
The Lord’s Prayer Being made one by the power of the Spirit, as our Saviour taught us, so we pray: Our Father in heaven hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.
Breaking of the Bread We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread.
Giving of Communion Alleluia. Christ our Passover has been sacrificed for us. Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia. As the Lay ministers receive communion the choir sings. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sin of the world: have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sin of the world: have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sin of the world: grant us thy peace. 12
Stewards will direct you to the Communion rail. Please indicate if you’d like a gluten-free wafer or non-alcoholic wine. To indicate your wish to receive a blessing, please bring this service sheet with you.
Communion Motet Ave verum Corpus natum de Maria Virgine vere passum immolatum in cruce pro homine. Cujus latus perforatum unda fluxit et sanguine. Esto nobis praegustatum in mortis examine. Hail, true Body, born of the Virgin Mary, who truly suffered upon the cross for mankind: from whose pierced side there came forth water and blood; give us now, and at the time of our death, yourself to be our food. Words: 14th century Music: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756–91) We remain seated
Hymn O God beyond all praising, we worship you today and sing the love amazing that songs cannot repay; for we can only wonder at every gift you send, at blessings without number and mercies without end: we lift our hearts before you and wait upon your word, we honor and adore you, our great and mighty Lord. Then hear, O gracious Savior, accept the love we bring, that we who know your favor may serve you as our king; and whether our tomorrows be filled with good or ill, we'II triumph through our sorrows and rise to bless you still: to marvel at your beauty and glory in your ways, and make a joyful duty our sacrifice of praise. Words: Michael Perry (1942-1996) Tune: Thaxted SP 299 13
Prayers after Communion Almighty God, you have taught us through your Son that love is the fulfilling of the law: grant that we may love you with our whole heart and our neighbours as ourselves; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
We stand
Generous God, you have fed us at your heavenly table. Set us on fire with your Spirit that when Christ comes again we may shine like lights before his face, who with you and the Spirit lives for ever. Amen.
Hymn Hope of our calling: hope by courage won; The apostles dared to share all Christ had done. Saints of today, Christ’s banner now unfurled, Will bring God’s message to tomorrow’s world. Hope of our calling: hope by faith empowered In those God sends to share his holy word, This call is ours, for we are chosen too, To live for God in all we say and do. Hope of our calling: hope with grace infused. We share God’s love with all by hate confused; The call to serve, to wash each others’ feet, To bring Christ’s healing touch to all we meet. Hope of our calling: hope with strength made bold; We’ll sow God’s kingdom-seeds throughout the world; Bring peace from conflict, fruitfulness from weeds, We’ll grow in Christ, our harvest-yield increased. Hope of our calling: Spirit-filled, unbound, Old joys remembered and new purpose found, Our call refreshed by sacrament and word, We go in peace to love and serve the Lord. Text: Ally Barrett (b.1975) Tune: Woodlands SP157
