Tu Solus Altissimus from Messe des Couvents – F. Couperin (1668-1733)
Welcome The Reverend Canon Philip Gray, Acting Canon Precentor We stand. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Hymn Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty! early in the morning our song shall rise to thee; holy, holy, holy! merciful and mighty! God in three persons, blessèd Trinity! Holy, holy, holy! all the saints adore thee, casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea; cherubim and seraphim falling down before thee, which wert and art and evermore shalt be. Holy, holy, holy! though the darkness hide thee, though the eye of sinful man thy glory may not see, only thou art holy, there is none beside thee perfect in power, in love, and purity. Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty! all thy works shall praise thy name in earth and sky and sea; holy, holy, holy! merciful and mighty! God in three persons, blessèd Trinity! Words: Reginald Heber (1783-1826) Tune: NICAEA; CP 202
The Greeting The Lord be with you and also with you. We remain standing.

Prayers of Penitence God the Father forgives us in Christ and heals us by the Holy Spirit. Let us therefore put away all anger and bitterness, all slander and malice, and confess our sins to God our redeemer. Silence Almighty God, our heavenly Father, we have sinned against you and against our neighbour, in thought and word and deed, through negligence, through weakness, through our own deliberate fault. We are truly sorry and repent of all our sins. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, who died for us, forgive us all that is past, and grant that we may serve you in newness of life to the glory of your name. Amen. Almighty God, who forgives all who truly repent, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in life eternal; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Gloria Gloria in excelsis deo, et in terra pax hominibus bonae voluntatis Laudamus te, benedicimus te, adoramus te, glorificamus te, gratias agimus tibi propter magnam gloriam tuam, Domine Deus, Rex caelestis, Deus Pater omnipotens. Domine fili unigenite, Jesu Christe. Amen. Glory to God in the highest, and peace to his people on earth. Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.
Collect Almighty and everlasting God, you have given us your servants grace, by the confession of a true faith, to acknowledge the glory of the eternal Trinity and in the power of the divine majesty to worship the Unity: keep us steadfast in this faith, that we may evermore be defended from all adversities; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. We sit. 5
First Reading
Romans 5:1-5
read by Isla Skinner
Therefore, since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have obtained access to this grace in which we stand; and we boast in our hope of sharing the glory of God. And not only that, but we also boast in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Silence
Gospel Acclamation We stand.
Choir
Alleluia, Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia, Alleluia. Alleluia. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, one God, who was, and who is, and who is to come, the Almighty. Alleluia, Alleluia. Alleluia.
Gospel Reading
John 16:12-15
read by the Reverend Canon Professor Myra Shackley, Cathedral Chaplain
Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. Glory to you, O Lord. Jesus said to his disciples: “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own, but will speak whatever he hears, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, because he will take what is mine and declare it to you. All that the Father has is mine. For this reason I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.” This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ.

Sermon
After an opening prayer, we sit. The Reverend Canon Mandy Coutts, Canon for Mission and Pastoral Development A brief Organ Interlude. We stand.
The Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. We kneel or sit.
Prayers of Intercession
led by Rev’d Canon Paul Maybury, Acting Dean
In the power of the Spirit and in union with Christ, let us pray to the Father. After each section this, or another, response is used: Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. At the end: Merciful Father, accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.
7
We stand.
Giving and Receiving Peace Peace to you from God our heavenly Father. Peace from his Son Jesus Christ who is our peace. Peace from the Holy Spirit, the life-giver. The peace of the Triune God be always with you and also with you. We offer one another a sign of peace and offer our gifts to God. The Table is set with bread and wine.
Hymn Bright the vision that delighted once the sight of Judah’s seer; sweet the countless tongues united to entrance the prophet’s ear. Round the Lord in glory seated cherubim and seraphim filled his temple, and repeated each to each the alternate hymn: ‘Lord, thy glory fills the heaven; earth is with its fullness stored; unto thee be glory given, holy, holy, holy, Lord.’ Heaven is still with glory ringing, earth takes up the angels’ cry, ‘Holy, holy, holy,’ singing, ‘Lord of hosts, the Lord most high.’ With his seraph train before him, with his holy Church below, thus unite we to adore him, bid we thus our anthem flow: ‘Lord, thy glory fills the heaven; earth is with its fullness stored; unto thee be glory given, holy, holy, holy, Lord.’ Words: Richard Mant (1776-1848) based on Isaiah 6 Tune: REDHEAD No 46

Prayer at the Preparation of the Table Holy God, holy and strong, holy and immortal, give us the bread of everlasting life, and make us branches of the true vine. Amen.
Great Thanksgiving Prayer
It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, always and everywhere to give you thanks, holy Father, almighty and eternal God. For with your only-begotten Son and the Holy Spirit you are one God, one Lord. All that you reveal of your glory, the same we believe of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, without any difference or inequality. We, your holy Church, acclaim you, Father of majesty unbounded, your true and only Son, worthy of all worship, and the Holy Spirit, advocate and guide. Three Persons we adore, one in being and equal in majesty. And so with angels and archangels, with cherubim and seraphim, we sing for ever of your glory: Choir
Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus Dominus Deus Sabaoth. Pleni sunt cæli et terra gloria tua. Hosanna in excelsis. Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini. Hosanna in excelsis. 9
Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.
We praise and bless you, loving Father, through Jesus Christ, our Lord; and as we obey his command, send your Holy Spirit, that broken bread and wine outpoured may be for us the body and blood of your dear Son. On the night before he died he had supper with his friends and, taking bread, he praised you. He broke the bread, gave it to them and said: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me. When supper was ended he took the cup of wine. Again he praised you, gave it to them and said: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. So, Father, we remember all that Jesus did, in him we plead with confidence his sacrifice made once for all upon the cross. Bringing before you the bread of life and cup of salvation, we proclaim his death and resurrection until he comes in glory. Jesus Christ is Lord: Lord, by your cross and resurrection you have set us free. You are the Saviour of the world. Lord of all life, help us to work together for that day when your kingdom comes and justice and mercy will be seen in all the earth. Look with favour on your people, gather us in your loving arms and bring us with all the saints to feast at your table in heaven. Through Christ, and with Christ, and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory are yours, O loving Father, for ever and ever. Amen.
10
We kneel or sit. Silence
The Lord’s Prayer As our Saviour taught us, so we pray: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.
Breaking of the Bread We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread.
Giving of Communion Draw near with faith. Receive the body of our Lord Jesus Christ which he gave for you, and his blood which he shed for you. Eat and drink in remembrance that he died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith with thanksgiving. As the ministers receive communion the choir sings Choir
Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi: miserere nobis. Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi: miserere nobis. Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi: dona nobis pacem. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sin of the world: have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sin of the world: have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sin of the world: grant us thy peace.
11
You will be invited forward by the stewards if you would like to receive the bread of communion. Please indicate if you would like a gluten-free wafer. When the communion administrant says The Body of Christ we respond Amen.
Communion Motet Panis angelicus fit panis hominum: dat panis caelicus figuris terminum. O res mirabilis: manducat Dominum pauper servus et humilis. The bread of angels becomes the food of humanity: the heavenly bread brings mere symbols to an end. O what marvel: a poor humble servant consumes the Lord. Words: from Sacris Solemniis Juncta, an Office Hymn for Matins, Corpus Christi Music: César Franck (1822–90)
Prayer after Communion Almighty and eternal God, you have revealed yourself as Father, Son and Holy Spirit, and live and reign in the perfect unity of love: hold us firm in this faith, that we may know you in all your ways and evermore rejoice in your eternal glory, who are three Persons yet one God, now and for ever. Amen. We stand.
Presentation by the Cathedral Music Trust A brief Presentation is made by Rosemary Downey, a Trustee of the Cathedral Music Trust. The Cathedral is very grateful to receive a grant from the Trust for £17,000.

Hymn Firmly I believe and truly God is Three and God is One; and I next acknowledge duly manhood taken by the Son. And I trust and hope most fully in that Manhood crucified; and each thought and deed unruly do to death, as he has died. Simply to his grace and wholly light and life and strength belong, and I love supremely, solely, him the holy, him the strong. And I hold in veneration, for the love of him alone, holy Church as his creation, and her teachings as his own. Adoration ay be given with and through the angelic host, to the God of earth and heaven, Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen. Words: John Henry Newman (1801-1890) HALTON HOLGATE, 426
Blessing God the Holy Trinity make you strong in faith and love, defend you on every side, and guide you in truth and peace; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. Amen. Go in peace to love and serve the Lord. In the name of Christ. Amen.
