Cyclical nature of business in Evergreen continues in 2011 By Deb Hurley Brobst

f there’s anything certain about Evergreen businesses, they come and they go. Sometimes they simply move or change names. In 2012, Evergreen saw Caffe di Lucca become EverBean by the Lake and Mail Boxes Etc. become Business Express in Bergen Park. Sandy Kidd took over ownership of Parkway Auto Repair, one of few women to own car repair shops. Evergreen Mountain Market had two restaurants inside its building during 2011:The Hub and Big Daddy’s, both of which did not last the year.

The big closure for Evergreen was the Bergen Park 7 theaters, which shut its doors a few months after the building was put up for sale in July. The theaters in Bergen Park had been a part of Evergreen for 17 years. Bella Vita moved to the Lakepoint Center from Kittredge, Montagne Interiors and Mountain Daisy moved into Bergen Village, Bow Wow barbers expanded in its building on Meadow Drive, and Healing Traditions Body Work and the Spa at Evergreen combining forces in space near Java Groove. Another big move was Domino’s, which now is in the Marketplace at Bergen Park. Domino’s was the last business to leave the

former Albertson’s Center, leaving the entire building vacant. Both Whatever Evergreen, a consignment and resale shop in downtown Evergreen, and Parkway Consignments, a consignment store for men, opened in April and closed later in the year. On a brighter note, among the businesses that joined the Evergreen business community are: • 7801 Home Furnishings, a store selling new furniture, which opened in Bergen Village, • Colorado Furniture Consignments, which opened in Marketplace at Bergen Park, • Tequila’s Family Mexican Restaurant,

which opened in May, taking over space that was vacated by Fiesta Jalisco in Bergen Park, Kitchen at the Creek restaurant, which opened on the east end of downtown Evergreen, and has been doing so well that it expanded in December, Menchie’s frozen yogurt, which opened in Bergen Village, From the Vine restaurant, which opened in Kittredge, serving breakfast, lunch and early dinner, Mountain Pediatrics, which opened in the Daniel Diamonds building in Bergen Park, and Hearts in Bloom silk flower shop, which opened in Marshdale in August.

Education From Page 7A Bergens celebrate 40th anniversary

It was all about memories and bringing the community together for those who attended the 40th anniversary celebration of Bergen Elementary School in November. Former teachers and principals remembered their time at the school, the students they taught, the time spent remodeling the school in the mid-‘80s and the colleagues who are still lifelong friends. Former students remembered the teachers who taught them reading, writing and arithmetic, the friends they made, and the fun they had on the playground. The past met the present at the two-day event as children now attending the Bergens heard presentations from teachers of the past. The Bergens community spent time looking at the displays in the library that showed the school’s 40 years of history. A time capsule buried 20 years ago was opened, and a new time capsule was buried, to be opened in 2031.

Bergen Meadow Elementary School alum Lindy Phelps Casados reads a copy of the Canyon Courier from 1980, one of the items in a time capsule opened on Nov. 4. The school celebrated its 40th anniversary with presentations, memorabilia, vendors and walk/bike race on the new trail near the school. Casados attended the school from 1975-82.
