Students portray their heroes in living wax museum

ven the liveliest and most interesting of museums couldn’t hold a candle to the one at West Jeff Middle School last week. Last Thursday, sixth-graders waxed enthusiastic — literally — about their past or present heroes, creating a funky mix of history, trilby hats, false eyelashes, white gloves and homemade tattoos. The participants stood like statues, staring off into history. While in character, the wax figures weren’t allowed to answer questions, and their only release from the staid stance was a tap of the “go” button on each display. Dressed in a gown and regal tiara, Kimberlyn Creel, , portrayed Kate Middleton, now known as Princess Katherine after her recent wedding. Her “go” button was a large replica of the princess’ sapphire engagement ring. “I wanted to be here because I wanted to learn about royalty,” Kimberlyn said. “I watched the wedding and decided to make my

button a sapphire ring, just like the one she has.” Other characters included former President John F. Kennedy, movie star Harrison Ford, gladiator Spartacus, musician Roger Waters, LEGO inventor Ole Kirk Christiansen, guitarist Rick Kulwicki, humanitarian Mother Teresa, popcorn guru Orville Redenbacher, football player Hines Ward, Queen Elizabeth, film star and martial artist Jackie Chan, former Broncos quarterback John Elway, Lady Godiva, race car driver Danica Patrick, and artist Pablo Picasso. Teacher Frank Reetz said the animated wax figures had exceeded his expectations. “This is a tradition here at West Jeff, and the kids have done a tremendous job,” Reetz said. “There are so many different presentations

Piano concert
A piano concert will be performed from 5 to 6 p.m. Saturday at St. Laurence Episcopal Church, 26812 Barkley Road in Conifer. The pianist will be David Horger, a graduate of Conifer High who recently graduated with a master’s of music in piano performance from the University of Georgia. He will play a selection of pieces from Brahms, Mozart and Ravel. The suggested donation is $10.
