Members of the Conifer VFW Post 12009 Ladies Auxiliary are collecting donations of food and personal items to send to troops overseas. Items include personal care items, Ramen noodles, teas, popcorn, gum, candy, beef jerky, individually packed treats and Christmas cookies. Cash donations are appreciated. Acoustic society plans Sunday events

onifer’s newest church is a heavenly mix of bluegrass music and a shortwinded but poignant sermon. Bluegrass Church is held at Conifer Community Church,  Havekost Road, at  p.m. every Sunday. Bluegrass music opens the service, played mostly by members of the congregation, who bring their own instruments: guitar, banjo, bass, violin, mandolin,

mandolin banjo and seraphone guitar. A half-hour sermon follows the worship music; then there’s a potluck and more jamming. Suzie Solomon, owner of the acoustic music store Pickin’ in Denver and an organizer of Bluegrass Church, said the musical fellowship began Nov.  with only a handful of musicians, singers and worshipers. “We wanted to have something every week, an ongoing thing,” Solomon said. Ask and ye shall receive. On Sunday, the congregation quadrupled in

size with hobbyist and professional musicians alike. The church is led by Elk Creek Community Church pastor Greg Blake, and Solomon calls him a “slap-pickin’ preacher.” “He’s one of the best guitar players around,” Solomon said. “You couldn’t fi nd a better person to have as a pastor of a bluegrass church.” For the last five years, Blake has led the -member congregation at Elk Creek, which Please see BLUEGRASS, Page 8

The 29th annual Conifer Christmas Parade is scheduled for 1 p.m. Dec. 3 on Sutton Road. Entries are still being accepted and are $40 per entry. This year’s theme is Western Country. There will be horse-drawn trolley rides for $1, free hot cocoa, lattes, chili and cider, face painting, cookie decorating, and photos with Santa.
