The country the world forgot - again Kevin Myers , 'The Sunday Telegraph' LONDON : Until the deaths of Canadian soldiers killed in Afghanistan , probably almost no one outside their home country had been aware that Canadian troops are deployed in the region.

And as always, Canada will bury its dead, just as the rest of the world, as always will forget its sacrifice, just as it always forgets nearly everything Canada ever does.. It seems that Canada 's historic mission is to come to the selfless aid both of its friends and of complete strangers, and then, once the crisis is over, to be well and truly ignored.

Canada is the perpetual wallflower that stands on the edge of the hall, waiting for someone to come and ask her for a dance. A fire breaks out, she risks life and limb to rescue her fellow dancegoers, and suffers serious injuries. But when the hall is repaired and the dancing resumes, there is Canada, the wallflower still, while those she once helped glamorously cavort across the floor, blithely neglecting her yet again. That is the price Canada pays for sharing the North American continent with the United States and for being a selfless friend of Britain in two global conflicts.

For much of the 20th century, Canada was torn in two different directions: It seemed to be a part of the old world, yet had an address in the new one, and that divided identity ensured that it never fully got the gratitude it deserved.

Yet it's purely voluntary contribution to the cause of freedom in two world wars was perhaps the greatest of any democracy.

Almost 10% of Canada 's entire population of seven million people served in the armed forces during the First World War, and nearly 60,000 died. The great Allied victories of 1918 were spearheaded by Canadian troops, perhaps the most capable soldiers in the entire British order of battle.

Canada was repaid for its enormous sacrifice by downright neglect, it's unique contribution to victory being absorbed into the popular memory as somehow or other the work of the 'British.'

The Second World War provided a re-run. The Canadian navy began the war with a half dozen vessels, and ended up policing nearly half of the Atlantic against U-boat attack. More than 120 Canadian warships participated in the Normandy landings, during which 15,000 Canadian soldiers went ashore on D-Day alone.

Canada finished the war with the third-largest navy and the fourth largest air force in the world. The world thanked Canada with the same sublime indifference as it had the previous time.

Canadian participation in the war was acknowledged in film only if it was necessary to give an American actor a part in a campaign in which the United States had clearly not participated - a touching scrupulousness which, of course, Hollywood has since abandoned, as it has any notion of a separate Canadian identity.

So it is a general rule that actors and filmmakers arriving in Hollywood keep their nationality - unless, that is, they are Canadian.

Moreover, Canada is every bit as querulously alert to the achievements of its sons and daughters as the rest of the world is completely unaware of them. The Canadians proudly say of themselves - and are unheard by anyone else - that 1% of the world's population has provided 10% of the world's peacekeeping forces. Canadian soldiers in the past half century have been the greatest peacekeepers on Earth - in 39 missions on UN mandates, and six on non-UN peacekeeping duties, from Vietnam to East Timor, from Sinai to Bosnia.

Yet the only foreign engagement that has entered the popular non-Canadian imagination was the sorry affair in Somalia , in which out-of-control paratroopers murdered two Somali infiltrators. Their regiment was then disbanded in disgrace - a uniquely Canadian act of self-abasement for which, naturally, the Canadians received no international credit.

So who today in the United States knows about the stoic and selfless friendship its northern neighbour has given it in Afghanistan ?

Rather like Cyrano de Bergerac , Canada repeatedly does honourable things for honourable motives, but instead of being thanked for it, it remains something of a figure of fun. It is the Canadian way, for which Canadians should be proud, yet such honour comes at a high cost. This past year more grieving Canadian families knew that cost all too tragically well.

Point of View is a regular feature of beach BOOSTER and is exactly that, simply a point of view. Any Point of View is meant to create thoughts and dialogue on how to make our Wasaga Beach an even better community to live, enjoy and to do business.

The Barrie Concert Band returns for their 7th Concert at the Lighthouse Community Church, 800 Sunnidale Road, Wasaga Beach, on Sunday, December 4th at 7 p.m. ALL funds from a goodwill offering go to the Wasaga Beach Ministerial Food Bank. At the past six concerts, the approximate 1400 in attendance have raised a total of $21,500. for our local food bank. The band has among their members 5 or 6 from our local area. Immediately following the approx. 90 minute concert, the Lighthouse Church ladies will serve Christmas goodies, Tim Hortons coffee, hot chocolate and Timbits.

A large crowd is expected once again this year, and urge guests to come early. DOORS OPEN AT 6:15 P.M. The church will once again, provide a tax receipt to anyone making a donation of $25. or more.

Music Angel Gets High Praise After having a chance to try the Music Angel I can truly say I’m impressed. Puss in Boots tells the original background history of Puss (Antonio Banderas) before he sets off on an adventure with his old friend Humpty Dumpty (Zach Galifianakis) and his new friend Kitty Softpaws (Salma Hayek). They all decide to chase after the two comical but unsightly characters named Jack (Billy Bob Thornton) and Jill (Amy Sedaris) who are harboring three special green beans that contain magical powers.

Puss in Boots has some important lessons for the little ones. The story shows the negative consequences of stealing and why we shouldn’t take things that don’t belong to us; we learn that a close friend is capable of betraying us but at the same time we are also shown that it is sometimes necessary to forgive a friend to save the friendship. Puss also demonstrates how to stand up to the class bully when he helps out Humpty after he is being pushed around in the classroom. The movie teaches all of us about the challenges of friendship and that friends will sometimes let us down. What did I think of the 3D ? I was impressed. It is one of the best 3D presentations to hit the cinema in 2011.

Peter’s Note: Puss in Boots is recommended for all ages but be advised that there are a few frightening animated characters; a limited romance between two animated characters and some intense animated action scenes. Parents should also be forewarned that one of the main characters is shown to die during the movie.

Epicure's Pumpkin Cheesecake Makes 1 — 9” (23 cm) cheesecake (12 servings) Cost Per Serving: 1.69 Prep Time: 15 minutes Cook Time: 40 minutes Ingredients Crust: 1 1/3 cups (330 ml) graham wafer crumbs 2 Tbsp (30 ml) butter, melted Filling: 2 — 8 oz (250 g) pkgs cream cheese 1 pkg Epicure's What's for Dessert? Pumpkin Cheesecake Mix 3 eggs 1 — 14 oz (398 ml) can pure pumpkin Instructions 1. Preheat oven to 325° F (160° C).

Transit Passes Available The Town of Wasaga Beach is excited to announce the launch of a transit pass.

The new transit pass will replace the ticketing system and allow individuals to use their transit passes on a yearly basis. Pricing for the transit pass will be $40.00 per month for an adult pass and $30.00 per month for senior and student passes. Transit passes are available for sale at Town Hall, the RecPlex, and the Chamber of Commerce.

Life is short, so never pass up an opportunity to let the people in your life know you love them.

After 21 years of marriage, my wife wanted me to take another woman out to dinner and a movie. She said, "I love you, but I know this other woman loves you too, and she would love to spend some time with you."

The other woman that my wife wanted me to visit was my MOTHER, who has been a widow for 19 years, but the demands of my work and my three children had made it possible to visit her only occasionally. That night I called to invite her to go out for dinner and a movie.

"What's wrong, are you well?" she asked. My mother is the type of woman who suspects that a late night call or a surprise invitation is a sign of bad news.

"I thought that it would be pleasant to spend some time with you," I responded. "Just the two of us."

She thought about it for a moment, and then said...

"I would like that very much."

That Friday after work, as I drove over to pick her up, I was a bit nervous.

When I arrived at her house, I noticed that she, too, seemed to be nervous about our date. She waited in the door with her coat on. She had curled her hair and was wearing the dress that she had worn to celebrate her last wedding anniversary. She smiled from a face that was as radiant as an angel's.

"I told my friends that I was going to go out with my son, and they were impressed," she said, as she got into the car. "They can't wait to hear about our meeting."

We went to a restaurant that, although not elegant, was very nice and cozy.

My mother took my arm as if she were the First Lady. After we sat down, I had to read the menu. Her eyes could only read large print. Half way through the entries, I lifted my eyes and saw Mom sitting there staring at me. A nostalgic smile was on her lips.

"It was I who used to have to read the menu when you were small," she said.

"Then it's time that you relax and let me return the favor," I responded.

During the dinner, we had an agreeable conversation - nothing extraordinary but catching up on recent events of each other's life. We talked so much that we missed the movie.

As we arrived at her house later, she said, "I'll go out with you again, but only if you let me invite you." I agreed.

"How was your dinner date?" asked my wife when I got home.

"Very nice. Much more so than I could have imagined," I answered.

A few days later, my mother died of a massive heart attack. It happened so suddenly that I didn't have a chance to do anything for her. Some time later, I received an envelope with a copy of a restaurant receipt from the same place mother and I had dined. An attached note said: "I paid this bill in advance. I wasn't sure that I could be there; but nevertheless, I paid for two plates - one for you and the other for your wife. You will never know what that night meant for me. I love you, son.”

At that moment I understood the importance of saying, in time, "I LOVE YOU." And to give our loved ones the time they deserve. Because nothing is more important in life than family... and they shouldn't be put off until "some other time.”

The Finest Vessels on the Great Lakes By 1917 the new Canadian Pacific Railway terminal at Port McNicoll was in full operation.

After nearly 20 years in Owen Sound the CPR fleet of five magnificent passenger ships had a new home. Now it was possible for passengers to board a train at Toronto's Union Station and three and a half hours later arrive at Port McNicoll's docks where sumptuous gardens were laid out and flowers spelled the word CPR STEAMSHIPS. "No such vessels" the Toronto Globe reported "have ever been seen on the Great Lakes, but their excellence lies not in the gorgeousness of their furniture but in their superiority over all other lake craft".

Life aboard the five CPR Great Lakes ships was the height of luxury. Travel writers described the vessels as a "mode of travel that is pleasant and luxurious". The 750 kilometre trip to the Lakehead took a day and two nights and cost $73.00 for two people.

With staterooms furnished in mahogany and brass and outfitted with private bathrooms, fresh linen and flowers each berth had private reading lights and twin beds. Passengers could play shuffleboard, have their hair cut and enjoy a quality of food in the dining room that had rapidly become legendary.

Canadian Pacific advertisements trumpeted, "The thrill of steamship life ... the romance of cruising the world’s largest lakes, historic sites, long lazy brilliant days, cool night with stars swinging low. This is shipboard life the Canadian Pacific way".

Throughout the years before the Second World War the five CPR steamers the Manitoba.. Keewatin .. Assiniboia .. Alberta and Athabasca offered one of the worlds great sailing adventures.
