Point of View All of us have probably experienced the anxiety of inviting a group, or even a few people to a meal, party or gathering... and then waiting close to the door hoping that folks will show up! Finally the door bell rings... and then again. Welcomes and hellos continue as the door opens and closes with folks arriving. At the end of the day as we say goodbye, we feel rewarded with the fact people came to enjoy our hospitality.

This past long weekend, Wasaga Beach had a party and all were invited to take part. Snowman Mania 2012!

Holly Haire-Ellis of Special Events at Town Hall has been working for months planning and organizing the events that were held all over town. Many local individuals offered ideas and help with offerings that would add to the weekend of fun and then worked throughout the weekend to make sure guests enjoyed. Service Clubs and local organizations contributed with many great events and attractions that added to the town wide celebrations of our annual Winter carnival. Many Wasaga Beach businesses also stepped up to the plate over the last several months and helped with the organizing, planning and running of events. Volunteers and business owners worked together in setting up and making sure these events went smoothly and that all attendees enjoyed and had smiles on their faces!

Thanks to Holly and all who worked so hard to prepare and pull off this special community event.

After the many meetings, months of preparation, dollars spent and just a lot of hard work... the count down was on for the Opening Ceremonies on Friday night! All who were involved were excited... and hoped the crowds would come out to enjoy!

Wasaga Beach did come! So did visitors from far and wide, who had heard Wasaga Beach was having a Winter Welcome!

I would like to thank all of you who came out to enjoy Snowman Mania 2012! We hope you enjoyed and experienced the warmth and community spirit that was generated with all the individuals and groups working together to make this annual Winter party happen. Every event was well attended and enjoyed and I'm sure will keep people looking forward to Snowman Mania 2013!

On a personal note, I would also like to thank all from our community who stopped by to greet our guests from CFB Borden. As the organizer of this first time visit to Snowman Mania, it truly was rewarding to see individuals from all walks of life meeting and thanking our friends of the Canadian Military! To reinforce my love of this community, as the group of Canadian Solders was packing up at the end of their long day, several took the time to thank me for the invite and told me heart warming stories of Wasaga Beach people being welcoming and showing their true appreciation for all our military does! CFB Borden has a long and historic history with Wasaga Beach. Thanks for reinforcing our friendship.

September 22 and 23, 2012 EVENT PROFILE The Wasaga Beach Home & Recreation Show, presented by Beach BOOSTER Promotions, will showcase the latest products for Home and Recreation under one roof at the Wasaga Beach RecPlex,1724 Mosley Street, Wasaga Beach, Ontario.This event will be one of the region’s largest exhibitions and second to none! Organizers anticipate more than eighty local exhibitors in home improvements, renovation, design, outdoor living, gardening, recreational products and related services will promote their products and services for visitors to experience during the two-day event.

ATTENDEE & VISITOR'S PROFILE The Wasaga Beach Home & Recreation Show will draw local attendees and visitors from the Greater Toronto Area as well as the Niagara and Kingston corridors with a particularly loyal base from the Toronto area. Buyers, homeowners and cottagers from more than 100 cities, towns and communities within 150 kilometres of Wasaga Beach are here to enjoy the Beach every year, as they have been for the past many decades.

EXHIBITOR INVITATION You are invited to reserve a booth and participate in the First Annual Wasaga Beach Home and Recreation Show to be held on September 22 and 23, 2012.

There are approximately 80 display booths available for rent–all under one roof! Organizers are inviting exhibitors that represent a wide variety of businesses specializing in home renovating, decorating and for the first time ever in The Beach, recreational products and other related services. We hope to reinforce the importance of the recreational aspect of our economy, especially at a time when the fall and winter seasons are upon us.

Many special attractions are planned for the show so there is sure to be something of interest for all visitors. There is an extensive, multi layered marketing plan being designed to promote attendance including and not limited to; print, signage, radio, regional press releases and direct mail.

Businesses that are early to confirm participation will be able to maximize the potential inclusion of their business in this marketing plan. The number of “similar” businesses or products will be limited in order to capitalize on customer outcomes and to promote a variety of services. Food will be available at the onsite snack bar. There will be numerous free draws and door prizes.

General admission is TWO DOLLARS. Booth costs: The charge for a single booth space is $325.00 (8’X10’) and $375.00 for (10’X10’). Booths are assigned on a first come basis. To reserve your space, fill out the attached booth application. It must be received by July 15, 2012 along with your $100.00 deposit and a cheque for the balance post dated no later than August 15, 2012.

Difficult Puzzle A little silver-haired lady calls her neighbour and says, "Please come over here and help me. I have a killer jigsaw puzzle, and I can't figure out how to get started."

Movie Review: The Descendants

by Peter Frieday www.moviesopeningthisweek.com The Descendants (2011) is nominated for five Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Directing and Best Writing (Adapted Screenplay).

Having seen the movie a few days ago, in retrospect, I must admit that I’m surprised that George Clooney was given the nom as Best Actor for this movie. Don’t get me wrong. His performance is the real deal here in The Descendants. He is refined in his performance and hits just the right degree of emotion for his scenes, however, I believe that he was even better in The Ides of March (2011). Now, what The Descendants has is talent both in front and behind the camera. It is directed by Alexander Payne ( Sideways 2004 About Schmidt 2002 ) who also cowrote the screenplay alongside Nat Faxon and Jim Rush. As much as Payne is known for his directing talents, I do believe his writing talents are on equal footing. This screenplay is a gem. The Descendants is an adaptation from the book by novelist Kaui Hart Hemmings ( she appears in a small cameo role as Clooney’s secretary) It’s a dark comedy movie that has clever dialogue written perfectly for a collection of dysfunctional and self absorbed characters who are at times either funny or pathetic. That’s a good thing.

The defective characters make this movie more interesting and entertaining to watch. There are times in this movie where I found myself laughing to myself during a serious moment. Alexander Payne has a way of finding humor in life’s darkest moments. There were also a few times when I just wanted to transform myself inside the movie screen and shake some sense into these people.

Matt King (George Clooney) is a workaholic Honolulu lawyer who is also the father of two daughters;10 yr old Scottie (Amara Miller) and 17yr old foul mouthed and disrespectful Alexandra ( Shailene Woodley).

One day his wife is involved in a boating accident and goes into a coma. Her living will instructs Matt to remove life support. At the same time, Matt is the trustee of a huge parcel of family owned land over in Kauai,HI and he is in the final stages of agreeing to sell the land for millions in profit. His world is turned upside down into chaos when his oldest daughter reveals to him that his wife was secretly having a love affair with a local realtor.

Payne did a great job in directing this film. I loved the direction of the scene inside the backyard pool where Matt tells his daughter that her mother is going to die and the camera captures her anger and grief underwater. We can feel her pain as she rises to the surface. Then there was the amusing scene when Matt closes the door to his wife’s hospital room and tears a strip off her for cheating on him – but she can’t hear a word he’s saying as she lies unconscious in a coma. The writing is priceless. Clooney finally confronts his wife’s lover and he asks him “Were you ever in my bedroom?” “Yes.Once” “You could have had the decency to lie about that one” . Another example of Payne’s talented directing was when Matt spots his wife’s lover on the beach. Matt follows him to his beachfront cottage and we then see Clooney’s head going up and down behind the bushes looking at the man who stole his wife’s heart from him – he is totally filled with animosity towards this man and you can just imagine what he’s thinking behind those bushes. The beauty of this movie is that you find yourself thinking “What would I do under the same circumstances?” Robert Forster is good in all his movies, but he made me laugh in this movie when he smacks his granddaughter’s boyfriend right in the eye after he doesn’t stop laughing at his wife, who’s suffering from Alzheimer’s.Odd, but funny within the moment. It is the comic relief in the darkest moments that makes this movie special. These collection of moments and scenes has resulted in a motion picture that captures the emotional struggle of a man pulled in two directions. He has a desire for retribution but his compassion for others keeps him in line. The Descendants exposes the healing and bonding between a father and his daughters as the father searches for understanding and his ability to forgive his dying love despite her painful betrayal

They began their work in 1791 after King George the Third gave royal assent to the creation of Upper Canada.

Land surveyors were needed. At first, there were few of them. Trained by the British Army or self-taught, by 1860 a handful of men had laid out over 500 townships.

Staying barely ahead of the relentless tide of settlers, they did their job astonishingly well, considering their primitive instruments and nearly intolerable working conditions.

Led by such men as Charles Rankin, Robert Bell, Alexander Vidal and Publius Virgilius Elmore, survey teams entered the wilderness with small budgets and strict deadlines. Force to work in all seasons and under extremely inhospitable conditions, the land surveyors of Ontario were men of prodigious energy and endurance. Confronted by swamps, impenetrable forests, or tangled underbrush, they did not have the luxury of searching for alternative routes.

If their compasses told them that the survey line would take them through the heart of a wet marsh, they would have to follow it, often taking sightings while waist deep in icy water. Still, the future of Upper Canada depended upon the surveyors. Without them orderly settlement could not proceed. They paid their dues in the field, plagued by blackflies, living for months on dried beans and salted meat, and surveying through sleet, snow, and unending rain.

Under the Shadow of Whitney Houston Under the shadow of Whitney Houston we have lost one of our Canadian Football League legends, Cal Murphy. Cal stood for being tough and going against the odds given his health condition and fighting the ever challenging issues of the CFL. "Cal was an outstanding coaching mind and a wonderful person," Wally Buono, Lions GM and VP of football operations, said in a statement. "He was a man that meant so much to the development of our league and its players. He will be greatly missed by all, but his contributions will remain with us for many years to come."

In Canadian tradition, we can celebrate all of the coaches that came before Cal and the men and women coaches going forward.

Think of all the coaches in our home town of Wasaga Beach, the men and woman that have and are giving of their time to help develop our children, and make them strong individuals, committed to excellence, teamwork and achievement which benefits all of us and makes our community stronger.

Our coaches are a cherished resource in our town and should be recognized by all of us. On Snowman Mania Saturday, the Wasaga Snowmobile Club hosted the Snowman Mania Silent Auction and Dance, where a wonderful crowd made the dance a huge success!

The Club also honoured our Landowners and VIP's for their part in making the WSC and its trail system among the most popular in Ontario. In the fall, the Wasaga Snowmobile Club was named "Outstanding Club of the Year" by the Canadian Council of Snowmobile Organizations.
