Evernote App, a Must for Business and Personal I've been an Evernote user for months and in that time, it has changed the way I think; a phenomenal feat for a free tool.

In the context of my business, I use Evernote for a combination of marketing and GTD (David Allen's Getting Things Done methodology). Here are some of the reasons Evernote has become invaluable to me: Evernote is seamless. As a business owner, I travel a lot, work from home and in the office. We have a staff and associates of 8 people and Evernote helps me manage my workflow, regardless of where I am.

Evernote is totally flexible. It has just enough structure to it that I can organize my notes however I want. The more I started using it, the more it helped me with my productivity, and allowed me to actually process information faster.

Evernote helps me create. Because I don't have to spend a lot of time thinking about how to adjust myself to a structured system, I'm able to focus more on the creation process, and organize however I see fit. The tool doesn't own me, I own the tool.

How I use Evernote for Marketing: I've been using Evernote to capture and create for months , but recently, I've realized its huge potential for distribution. Evernote is the most cost effective marketing tool I use and it has allowed me to completely streamline my process. Lately, I've been obsessed with Evernote's sharing features. At my company: We create Shared Notebooks for all of our events. It's easy for me to be out in the field and drop something into Evernote and know that anyone that has access to it will see it. I also love the ability to share something with my Twitter and Facebook networks, straight from my Evernote account. I love that I can use one tool to do so many different things. [Learn about sharing from Evernote] I use Evernote for document storage. I store all of my documents in Evernote, where I can easily edit them, export them as PDFs and drop the edited version right back into the note, where it will always be available to me.

I use Evernote as my distribution tool. I'm able to send emails to my associates right from my Evernote account, which makes the communication flow extremely efficient and effective.

My office is almost completely paperless. I rely on my scanner for helping me process paper and then get rid of it.

Every new company staff member is trained on how to optimally use Evernote; it's invaluable to our business!

Evernote for sentimental mementos, serial numbers and more: The more I use Evernote, the more uses I find for it. Here are a few ideas: I keep information about my dog, Banks, in Evernote. When we arrive at the vet, I can pull up my dog's medicine and immediately provide the vet with all the information he needs.

I have a notebook for my family. These notebooks include photos and even medicine information.

I take pictures of birthday cards. I realize that with Evernote, it's about the sentiment. By snapping photos of cards with Evernote, I'm able to look at my collection in Evernote much more than if it was kept in a box somewhere. I've become a digital hoarder!

I store computer serial numbers in Evernote. To keep my gadgets' serial numbers handy, I snap photos of them using Evernote.

Evernote for networking and events I go to a lot of events. Since I'm a very organized person, I take lots of notes and photos of business cards. I drop them all into a Shared Notebook that other people who may have attended the event might want to access. It takes the stress out of trying to share notes and tips!

Beach BOOSTER Promotions Presents New Fall Home & Recreation Show

I'm extremely proud of my community and my family to once again take part in a very important Humanitarian mission to the Dominican Republic. For myself, my wife Dr. Dina Ghobrial and our son Daniel this will be our third visit. The mission is designed to deliver much needed aid in the form of food, shelter and clothing to needy Haitian families who are marginalized in their Dominican based existence. It is especially rewarding that our simple donation box placed beside our Harvey's Wasaga cash register in combination with donations collected by Ghobrial Dentistry since last November have exceeded the $5000 mark. The generosity of this community never ceases to amaze me.

As well on this trip a house has been purchased for a Haitian family to find shelter, some of the 40 member delegation will be involved in putting the finishing touches on the home before it is handed over to its family. Livestock will be purchased and awarded to persons in need to help them sustain their living. A prison ministry will be in effect where some Haitian are held in confines without charges for many months deprived of human dignity. Medical and dental services will be provided, and many hockey bags of distributions items which have been collected from both our community and that of Innisfil.

September 22 and 23, 2012 EVENT PROFILE The Wasaga Beach Home & Recreation Show, presented by Beach BOOSTER Promotions, will showcase the latest products for Home and Recreation under one roof at the Wasaga Beach RecPlex,1724 Mosley Street, Wasaga Beach, Ontario.This event will be one of the region’s largest exhibitions and second to none! Organizers anticipate more than eighty local exhibitors in home improvements, renovation, design, outdoor living, gardening, recreational products and related services will promote their products and services for visitors to experience during the two-day event.

ATTENDEE & VISITOR'S PROFILE The Wasaga Beach Home & Recreation Show will draw local attendees and visitors from the Greater Toronto Area as well as the Niagara and Kingston corridors with a particularly loyal base from the Toronto area. There are approximately 80 display booths available for rent–all under one roof! We hope to reinforce the importance of the recreational aspect of our economy, especially at a time when the fall and winter seasons are upon us.

Many special attractions are planned for the show so there is sure to be something of interest for all visitors. There is an extensive, multi layered marketing plan being designed to promote attendance including and not limited to; print, signage, radio, regional press releases and direct mail.

Businesses that are early to confirm participation will be able to maximize the potential inclusion of their business in this marketing plan. The number of “similar” businesses or products will be limited in order to capitalize on customer outcomes and to promote a variety of services. Food will be available at the onsite snack bar. There will be numerous free draws and door prizes.

General admission is TWO DOLLARS. Booth costs: The charge for a single booth space is $325.00 (8’X10’) and $375.00 for (10’X10’). Booths are assigned on a first come basis. It must be received by July 15, 2012 along with your $100.00 deposit and a cheque for the balance post dated no later than August 15, 2012.

On our last mission's trip in November we planted some seeds in the community to create small business owners and operators. Candidates came forward with business ideas they can implement in their communities much like the Dragon's Den idea. I had the privilege of supplying those Candidates with serious and valid ideas with significant business grants to help their projects see the light. This trip I will be able to follow up on those baby ideas, and supervise them to fruition.

My thanks to Steve Wallace for helping organize this trip, to my Wife Dr. Dina Ghobrial for providing her dental services for the third time in a year's time to those in dire need of it. My thanks to my son Daniel who is 6 years old and works as hard as the rest of us. And to all those who donated their hard earned money to our fund raising efforts. Warning: Scam Against Older Men Women often receive warnings about protecting themselves at the mall and in dark parking lots, etc.

This is the first warning I have seen for men. I wanted to pass it on in case you haven't heard about it.

This is a 'heads up' for those men who may be regular customers at Candian Tire, Home Depot, Costco, or even Wal-Mart.

This one caught me totally by surprise.

Over the last month I became a victim of a clever scam while out shopping. Simply going out to get supplies has turned out to be quite traumatic. Don't be naive enough to think it couldn't happen to you or your older friends.

Here's how the scam works: Two nice-looking, college-aged girls will come over to your car or truck as you are packing your purchases into your vehicle. They both start wiping your windshield with a rag and Windex, with their breasts almost falling out of their skimpy T-shirts. (It's impossible not to look). When you thank them and offer them a tip, they say 'No' but instead ask for a ride to McDonald's.

You agree and they climb into the vehicle. On the way, one starts undressing and then starts crawling all over you, while the other one steals your wallet.

I had my wallet stolen Sept. 4th, 9th, 10th, twice on the 15th, 17th, 20th, 24th, & 29th. Also Oct. 1st & 4th, twice on the 8th, 16th, 23rd, 26th & 27th. With warm weather and Spring approaching tell your friends to be careful. What a horrible way to take advantage of us older men. Warn your friends to be vigilant.

Wal-Mart has wallets on sale for $2.99 each. I found even cheaper ones for $1.25 at Dollarama and bought them out in three of their stores.

Also, you never get to eat at McDonald's. I've already lost 11 pounds just running back and forth from Canadian Tire to Home Depot to Costco, etc.

So please, tell all the older men that you know and warn them to be on the lookout for this scam. (The best times are just before lunch and around 4:30 in the afternoon.)

Fort Willow During the summer of 1813, American forces gained control of Lake Erie. A new route between York and Michigan was needed. The 9-mile portage became a crucial link between Lake Simcoe and the Minesing Swamp which led to Georgian Bay. This route was protected by erecting a pine fortress a top a hill overlooking the swamplands.

This fortress, named Fort Willow consisted of two Blockhouses, a barn, and several log houses. Beyond a stout Palisade (180 feet by 250 feet) was a string of earthworks and trenches. The Fort was the only dot of civilization for more than 70 kilometres and at its peak it housed as many as 250 men. Life at Fort Willow was not very nice with winter being very inhospitable and summer was “malarial. On many occasions Fort Willow was used to discipline British troops as labourers.

The regiment based at Fort Willow were called the Royal Newfoundland Fencibles or RNF. Despite the fact the most regiments in the war of 1812, soldiers were almost entirely Canadian born. The RNF were successful in capturing and maintaining Fort Mackinac for the remainder of the war. The Fort and the RNF were disbanded at the end of the war. The RNF and other regiments were vital in ensuring that the Americans did not take total control. Without their efforts, Canada would no doubt have been taking vowels from their vocabulary.

Transit Passes Available The Town of Wasaga Beach is excited to announce the launch of a transit pass. The new transit pass replaces the ticketing system and allows individuals to use their transit passes on a yearly basis. Pricing for the transit pass is $40.00 per month for an adult pass and $30.00 per month for senior and student passes. Transit passes are available for sale at Town Hall, the RecPlex, and the Chamber of Commerce.

Movie Review: Moneyball [ Blu-ray Review ] Copyright 2012 by Peter Frieday www.moviesopeningthisweek.com

Lighthouse Tenders Did you ever wonder how lighthouse keepers living on a light station island got to the main land? In many cases around Georgian Bay, the means of transportation was a Watts boat known as a lighthouse tender. W. Watts and Sons of Collingwood were boat builders from 1842 to 1946. During their century of service to water transportation, the Watts built an amazing array of craft ranging from barges to canoes, yachts and other pleasure boats, skiffs and fish boats, scows and schooners.

And tenders. In a report dated 1910, the Minister of the Marine Department who served as the superintendent of lighthouses, reported that a variety of Watts boats had been purchased to serve the needs of lighthouse keepers. Many were delivered as early as the 1880s and ranged in length from 15 to 28 feet. Some were known as flat-bottomed boats, others as dories or skiffs.

But all were vital to the comfort and safety of those who kept a light.

At Goderich, light keeper Robert Campbell had a 14-footer that was new in 1880. The tender at Point Clark was a 22-foot sail boat with a ten-foot beam while Kincardine's keeper manned a 17foot boat delivered in 1875 that was very much in need of repair. Andrew Lockerbie had two Watts boats at the Collingwood lighthouse and there were also similar craft at light stations on Cove and Hope Islands.

The last lighthouse tender built by Watts of Collingwood was the 36-foot Navaid, constructed in 1943. Used by Fred Watts as a personal craft, it was sold to the Department of Transport and put into service at Prescott, Ontario. The Navaid served as a light boat until its demise in March, 1968. For nearly a century, Watts tenders acted as a lifeline for lighthouse keepers, their families and for those in trouble on the seas.

The Death Horse I have told this story before of how I almost got killed while being on a horse.

It started out innocently enough with the sun shinning over a cloudless sky.

The horse was there all saddled up and waiting. I did my administrations and climbed onto the saddle.

But before I could get seated properly and my feet in both stirrups, the damn thing started jerking around. The horse was going up and down and back and forth and I was hanging on for my life. I was screaming for help and, despite my death hold on the neck, I started sliding of the side. I was trying to find the stirrup to put my foot in to stop the sliding, but it was no where to be found - not that I had the time to look for it.

Between my fear, the pain in my arms from holding on to his neck so thight and was beginning to loose grip, my screaming for help, and the unstoppable movement of the horse I was sure I was going to die.

Finally my arms begin to give way and I was sliding further off the horse. I just knew I was going under the wildly gyrating thing and be crushed to death. I was finally hanging on with one hand on the withers of the neck but was just about to fall under the damn thing when the Wal Mart manager ran out and unplugged the ride.

I still have flashbacks to this day. (shudder)

Moneyball (2011) is a biographical sports drama movie directed

by Bennett Miller (Capote 2005). It’s an adaptation of Michael Lewis’s 2003 book “Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game”. It tells the story of Major League Baseball’s Oakland Athletics record setting 2002 season (they won 20 consecutive games to set a new American League record ) and how their General Manager Billy Beane created a competitive team using an unconventional strategy. Beane (Brad Pitt) and his assistant Peter Brand (Jonah Hill) (“Peter Brand” is a fictional representation of real life baseball executive Paul DePodesta ) are faced with the reality of not having enough money to sign talented star players. Just prior to the the start of the 2002 season,Beane meets Brand and hires him away from the Cleveland Indians. The movie highlights how Beane and Brand worked together to build a winning team by utilizing Brand’s statistical intelligence system to evaluate player acquisitions rather than relying exclusively on the scouting staff.

This movie is not just about baseball. It’s about leadership. It’s an example of having the courage to be inventive and think outside the box as a sports or business leader. It’s about believing in yourself and your vision of what needs to be done to win. Moneyball is an inside look at a baseball sports executive who was an original trailblazer in Sabermetrics (specialized analysis of baseball players based on baseball statistics). It’s a movie where we get to see the obstacles faced by a general manager especially when personalities clash over decisions being made. In professional sports,the GM usually gets his way.

If he doesn’t – there are solutions. In the movie, Beane faces opposition from his coach Art Howe (nicely played by actor Philip Seymour Hoffman) when Beane wants Howe to keep a player named Pena off the starting roster. Howe refuses to cooperate. Beane solves the problem by simply trading the player away to another team.Problem fixed and another example of leadership. One thing that we can take away from the movie is that – when real leaders truly believe in their plans and decisions then they will stubbornly stick it out despite any criticism they get from others on the management team. They will not be deterred when they believe in what they’re doing.

Moneyball is a wonderful sports drama especially because Brad Pitt does such a great job in effectively portraying Beane as a determined,focused and emotional leader who never ever took his eyes off his main objective – to build a winning team despite any and all obstacles.

One important feature of this movie; is that the producers had permission from Major League Baseball Properties to incorporate actual game highlights into the movie. That allowed us to experience sports history emotion once again. When we witness the 20th win in a row, occurring on September 4,2002, director Bennett Miller used a technique that heightened the drama. He juxtaposed silence in one moment of the game action and then added the roar of the stadium crowd in the next very moment. Very compelling moments. Director of Photography Wally Pfister (Inception 2010 The Dark Knight 2008) hit a home run with the colors,angles and lighting in this movie and his work is commendable. Near the end of the movie, Brand shows Beane a moving film reel of a 240 pound catcher who didn’t believe that he could hit a home run. He hits a ball and runs to first base,trips and falls. As he gets back up,his teammates have to tell him he had hit a home run. That scene is an implied comparison to Billy Beane. He had hit a home run by leading the Athletics to a winning season but he didn’t see it for what it was – for him it was all about changing the meaning of sports management and if you lose the last game of the season then your mission isn’t accomplished. That is why the lyrics to the song Bean’s daughter sings in the movie,Lenka Kripac’s The Show “I’ve got to let it go and just enjoy the the show” are so appropriate. There is a scene where Beane listens to it as he’s driving and he then emotionally realizes that he did accomplish something special in that 2002 baseball season and he too should “just enjoy the show” I purchased the Blu-ray edition of Moneyball and I’ve already watched the movie a few times. It’s one of the best baseball drama movies that I’ve ever seen. They need to make more movies like this. Even if you’re not a baseball fan, you’ll enjoy this movie. The Special Features included with the Blu-ray are an exceptional added bonus. They include features on Adapting MoneyBall, The Making of Moneyball and Drafting the Team.

Moneyball is nominated for six Academy Awards ( presented on February 26,2012 ) including Best Achievement in Film Editing, Best Achievement in Sound Mixing, Best Motion Picture of the Year, Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role (Brad Pitt),Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role (Jonah Hill) and Best Writing (Adapted Screenplay).The movie is truly deserving of all the Oscar recognition that it has received.

As I see it there are about four main reasons why we don't seem to get more involved in saving the planet. Oil is so directly linked to the success of our economy we can't see how we could possibly survive without it. It's also an integral part of our culture. Our society has been inextricably related to oil for the past 160 years or so in the ways we live, work and play. Most people think that technology will someday save us from all of the harmful effects we have subjected the earth to for the past few generations. And, we as individuals think we just can't make a difference.

We are so convinced that we can't make a difference that we appear to be overwhelmed and don't know where to start to help to solve the problem.

The answer is right here in our own community.

Should (or perhaps when) our world systems collapse, the only thing that will be left is community. We have the opportunity to strengthen our relationships right now and create a more resilient community. Think of it, “Buy Local” becomes a moot point because buying locally is the most sustainable solution to keep our community strong.

The Way Wasaga Was....by Joe Bickerstaff With mid March fast approaching, all in Wasaga Beach start thinking about the upcoming Spring and Summer season. Although for decades, we have promoted ourselves as a Four Season Resort Town, our tourism roots certainly started as a result of the lure to our beautiful sandy shore in the warm Summer months. For generations people have enjoyed our beach and the safety and beauty of the shallow, welcoming waters of Nottawasaga Bay. Our Nottawasaga River has provided cottagers and tourists with some the best fishing in the world and the opportunity to boat from the numerous docks along the shorelines. With the cottagers and tourists, came commerce and the birth of our tourism industry. It was 100 years ago that the McLean family built the original Capstan Inn on the beachfront and a few years later, followed with the construction of our famous Dandanella Dance Pavilion. Commercial buildings continued to develop and grow along the beach and on Main Street. Wasaga Beach became one of the most popular Summer destinations to all in Southern Ontario and some parts of the northern US states. Our reputation of providing fun in the sun and entertainment spread even further as Wasaga Beach was discovered by members of our armed forces and those of our allies, who spent time at neighbouring CFB Borden. When there was time in the Summer months to leave the base and travel to The Beach for some R & R, memories were surely made that were then shared with friends and family all over North America and the world!

Today we take pride in welcoming visitors to our modern town and of course boast about our world famous beach. Although our valued visitors can enjoy all that nature has to offer and many businesses have unique activities and services to keep our guests happy… some of the great Summer activities that were enjoyed in The Beach for many years have disappeared.

Recently I had the pleasure of going through a copy of The Wasaga Weekly dated July 1966. Although I was fascinated with headlines like “Springhurst-Brock‘s Beach to study merger with Wasaga Beach” and “Council Buys Radar Unit” with the story about the village purchasing one of these units to be installed in one OPP cruiser, it was the many ads for local businesses that really brought back some memories!

There are numerous ads promising great food with live entertainment at hotels and lounges with cool sounding names. El Morocco Dining Lounge offering Pizza Pie. The Dardanella, “right on the beach” boasted about it’s Upper Deck Holiday Dancerama with 3 Big Bands and Go Go Dancers! The Sharke Barre in the lower level of The Dard advertised 2 bands. The Bali H’ai Room at the Nottawa Hotel advertised The Fabulous Inspirations performing, while reminding all to visit The Surf Room for fine dining. Other famous local names are mentioned, such as Hank & Frank’s Tavern, The Beacon, The Dyconia Hotel: “The Hotel for the Mature Persons” with it’s Dinner Bell Room for dining.

Other ads fill the pages with things to do in The Beach! The Imperial Hell Drivers, featuring 1966 Valiants performing at Wasaga Speedway with Stock Car Racing every Saturday night, Horse Back Riding at The Hitchin’ Post, Roller Skating complete with Go Go Girls and live entertainment at the Palace Peir, 5 and 10 pin bowling offered at Wasaga Bowl and the list goes on.

The little paper from July ’66 boasts Wasaga Beach as “Canada’s Premier Beach Resort”. There sure was a lot to do, in addition to enjoying The World’s Longest Freshwater Beach!
