The grass needs to get a little greener and the weather needs to be a little warmer but everything is ready for another season at the 100 year old Stayner Lawn Bowling Club. Club President Helen Elder and Groundsman Wayne Riddall are ready to welcome back their members for another busy year of “Bowls”. Members of the Club come from all over the region, Stayner, of course, but also from Wasaga Beach, Lisle, Creemore, New Lowell. Club teams compete among themselves and have matches with other clubs from Barrie, Midland, Collingwood and Orillia. One such competition is being held at the Stayner Club in late June. During the year the Club has special events such as Potluck Dinners and on June 10th they are holding a Family Day where members can bring their family for a day of bowls and socializing. The layout of the “greens” measures 125 feet square which accomodates 8 greens 12 or 13 feet wide. Play can be held one way in the mornings and switch 90 degrees in afternoon going Jim Elder Helen Elder Wayne Riddall the other way. To explain the rules of game would take more space than we have here. Essentially the “Jack” small white ball is thrown along the green until it stops. The aim of the game is simple. Get your bowls as close as possible to a small white ball called the 'jack'. It might sound easy, but the fact that the bowls do not travel in a straight line seriously adds to the tactical challenge. The bowls are not perfectly round. The bias on the ‘bowl” causes it to bend. The players take turns to bowl. When all the bowls have been played, a competitor or team gets one point for each of their bowls that is closer to the “ jack” than the opponent's closest bowl. Sounds like fun. You can try it out Monday’s and Thursday’s at 6:30 p.m.

Remember it is not an old person’s game.. anyone 10 or more can throw “bowls.” New members are welcomed with a first year membership of only $50.

Jenny will also speak briefly about the marketing campaign for this summer.

Holly Haire-Ellis, as Special Events Coordinator, will let everyone in on the considerations and process involved in creating a special event at the Beach, and will also talk Offer Valid at Water Depot Wasaga Beach Only about some new events for the summer season as well as Limit One Per Household the return of successful events from previous years.

The Cab Ride I’ll Never Forget

A Minneapolis Taxi driver wrote: I arrived at the address at 2:30 a.m and honked the horn. After waiting a few minutes I honked again. Since this was going to be my last ride of my shift I thought about just driving away, but instead I put the car in park and walked up to the door and knocked.. 'Just a minute', answered a frail, elderly voice. I could hear something being dragged across the floor.

After a long pause, the door opened. A small woman in her 90's stood before me. She was wearing a print dress and a pillbox hat with a veil pinned on it, like somebody out of a 1940's movie.

By her side was a small nylon suitcase. The apartment looked as if no one had lived in it for years. All the furniture was covered with sheets.

There were no clocks on the walls, no knickknacks or utensils on the counters. In the corner was a cardboard box filled with photos and glassware.

Would you carry my bag out to the car?' she said. I took the suitcase to the cab, then returned to assist the woman.

She took my arm and we walked slowly toward the curb. She kept thanking me for my kindness.

'It's nothing', I told her.. 'I just try to treat my passengers the way I would want my mother to be treated.'

Oh, you're such a good boy, she said. When we got in the cab, she gave me an address and then asked, 'Could you drive through downtown?' It's not the shortest way,' I answered quickly.. Oh, I don't mind,' she said. 'I'm in no hurry. I'm on my way to a hospice.

I looked in the rear-view mirror. Her eyes were glistening. 'I don't have any family left,' she continued in a soft voice..'The doctor says I don't have very long.' I quietly reached over and shut off the meter.

What route would you like me to take?' I asked.

For the next two hours, we drove through the city. She showed me the building where she had once worked as an elevator operator.

We drove through the neighborhood where she and her husband had lived when they were newlyweds. She had me pull up in front of a furniture warehouse that had once been a ballroom where she had gone dancing as a girl.

Sometimes she'd ask me to slow in front of a particular building or corner and would sit staring into the darkness, saying nothing.

As the first hint of sun was creasing the horizon, she suddenly said, 'I'm tired. Let's go now'.

We drove in silence to the address she had given me. It was a low building, like a small convalescent home, with a driveway that passed under a portico. Two orderlies came out to the cab as soon as we pulled up. They were solicitous and intent, watching her every move.

They must have been expecting her. I opened the trunk and took the small suitcase to the door.

The woman was already seated in a wheelchair.

How much do I owe you?' She asked, reaching into her purse.’ Nothing,' I said You have to make a living,' she answered.

There are other passengers,' I responded.

Almost without thinking, I bent and gave her a hug. She held onto me tightly.

You gave an old woman a little moment of joy,' she said. 'Thank you.'

I squeezed her hand, and then walked into the dim morning light.. Behind me, a door shut.

It was the sound of the closing of a life..

I didn't pick up any more passengers that shift.

I drove aimlessly lost in thought. For the rest of that day, I could hardly talk. What if that woman had gotten an angry driver, or one who was impatient to end his shift? What if I had refused to take the run, or had honked once, then driven away?

On a quick review, I don't think that I have done anything more important in my life.

We're conditioned to think that our lives revolve around great moments. But great moments often catch us unaware-beautifully wrapped in what others may consider a small one .”Life gives us all such moments... where a brilliant light shines through the ordinary moments in our ordinary days. They come unsolicited and unannounced, and provide us the gift of significance and, if we are lucky, the opportunity to serve.

Joe Bickerstaff of Beach BOOSTER Group made the presentation along with Cathy Holland-Hendry of Cathy’s Flower & Gift Boutique On Thursday night I was asked to attend a small Pizza Party at the Lions Den for 4 kids and their parents. These 4 kids are heading for Orlando Disney as part of Air Canada's Dreams Take Flight. Wasaga Beach Lions are sponsoring these local kids. Because I accompanied 4 kids last year I was asked to explain to this year's kids what to expect during their trip. Part of the program was also to show a video from the trip. The DVD player worked but I couldn't get it to transmit through the projector and onto the screen. I tried for over an hour and in desperation I phoned Roy Dutt at home. The Dutts look after the Lion Den. The Dutts, Roy and Ruth were in the middle of eating their dinner at home but volunteered to rush over to see if they could help solve the problem. In the meantime, all the guests had arrived and were ready to view the video. Roy took about 10 minutes and had the projector working properly. He and Ruth had saved the day. The Sundance Film Festival is an American film festival that started in 1978 with meager beginnings and takes place annually in Park City, Utah.

The film festival was founded on a love for independent film and a lack of money. Today, it is the largest independent cinema festival in the United States. Held in January of each year in a resort community, the festival is a showcase for new work from American and international independent film makers. Many famous independent filmmakers received their big break at Sundance.

The Blair Witch Project, a tiny, scary independent film produced with a budget of less than $25,000 by a few friends in their 30s, was snapped up for $1 million after its screening at Sundance in 1999 and ended up making $249 million worldwide.

The Wasaga Beach Short Film Festival kicked off its second annual season May 1, of this year. It too is founded on strong principles and a lack of money.

The Wasaga Beach Short Film Festival (WBSFF) is unlike any other film festival, it is a unique opportunity for grass roots film enthusiasts to compete on an even playing field.

There are no entry fees. The WBSFF aims to showcase the best in short films in the categories of Romance, Action, Documentary and Comedy and is also featuring a recognition award for the best 30 second Wasaga Beach business Video Advertisement. Our Wasaga Beach Short Film Festival vision is based on capturing the imagination of film makers and actors at the grass roots level creating an opportunity for international exposure while eliminating entry barriers and providing a focus for talent, passion, capability and achievement. It is hoped to leverage the natural beauty of our location to inspire our participants to produce films that will promote the beauty, vibrancy, vitality and quality of life of Wasaga Beach honouring its natural ecosystems, visitors, residents and businesses.

We have the makings of creating an annual international event here in Wasaga Beach attracting friends, family and visitors to our world's longest fresh water “BLUE FLAG” beach to host an annual film festival. Think of it…….the Wasaga Beach Short Film Festival, achieving prominence and reaching international attention.

We can follow that dream. All it will take is committed volunteers, community engagement and business support.

Sir Frederick Banting's Homestead Returning from Toronto last week, the Explorer drove through the Simcoe County town of Alliston. There, he followed a directional sign to Sir Frederick Banting's homestead, the former Essa Township farm upon which Canada's first Nobel laureate was born. Considering the fame of this pioneer in Canadian medicine, his childhood home is suffering from serious neglect, the porch and roof sagging and the place in general disrepair.

Fred Banting was born here, one of six children of a well-to-do farmer. A rather shy, modest young man, he graduated from the University of Toronto Medical School in 1920 before beginning to lecture on anatomy at the University of Western Ontario. One night, while preparing for his lectures, Banting read an article about experiments recently undertaken on the pancreas and its relationship to diabetes. The germ of an idea written in his journal later blossomed into a great discovery.

Assisted by a 21-year old medical school graduate, Charles Best, Banting set to work.

Within six months, the puzzling answer to diabetes was within grasp. And January 11, 1922, an extract was injected into Leonard Thompson a 14-year old who was suffering from three years of diabetes. The extract worked and Leonard Thompson survived to live to middlelife. The insulin that the Banting and Best team isolated became an immediate and effective therapy for an age-old disease.

In 1923, Frederick Banting became the first Canadian to win a Nobel Prize. During the rest of his lifetime Sir Frederick was judged to be the most famous living Canadian. Frederick Banting died in a plane crash in a remote part of Newfoundland in February 1941. He was only fifty years old.

Everyone knows how important the short game is, but here's some stats that may surprise you...

From 30 yards pros get up and down about 46% of the time. Whereas a 10 handicap golfer only gets up and down around 11% of the time, and a 30 handicapper only gets up and down about 3% of the time.

Ouch!

So the moral of the story boys and girls, is... improve your short game and your scores will drop!

But one of the biggest factors that prevents this has to do with contact on the short shots.

Because if you fat or thin your short game shots, then the ball is going to either go too far or too short, leaving you a long putt or, heaven forbid... another chip!

So today I want to give you one simple tip that will help you improve the percentage of contact on your short shots. What I'm about to share with you is completely contrary to what you've heard about the short game. You see, the common advice with the short game is to put most of the weight on your left side (for right handers) at address and hit down on the ball.

Think about it... that's ok for a professional or the golfer who practices a lot, because by doing this your contact has to be very precise. If you're making a short stroke and hitting sharply down on the ball and your contact point is slightly off, then you'll stub the club in the ground causing a fat shot, or you'll hit the ball above the middle causing a thin shot. So for most golfers I'm teaching, I suggest that when they setup to a chip or short pitch, they keep the weight fairly even at address and the ball in the middle of the stance.Once setup like this, then I get them to make a much shallower backswing and follow-through. So it's much more of a sweeping motion than an up and down motion.

Imagine a shallow U rather than a sharp V action.

This is a lot different than what is commonly taught, but for most golfers who I teach this, it gives better consistency and a much higher margin for error.

Because the club is moving much lower to the ground, you can miss hit the ball and it's still possible to get a good result.

You'll hit less fats and thins with this approach.

So if your short game is a problem area for you, try this and let me know how you get on.

The Senior Men League is in good hands this golfing season with a new executive taking over.

The executive was introduced on Wednesday before the opening day Scramble. Guy Hallifax, Gord Pearcey, John Hoy, Andy Beaudoin and Wayne Riddall will guide the League which operates competition using a modified Stapleford Scoring System.

The Way Wasaga Was....by Joe Bickerstaff Although we usually tell stories of many years ago in this regular beach BOOSTER feature, this issue I’m looking back just one year when Beach BOOSTER Group was involved for the first time in the annual Wild Wing Wasaga Beach Bike Rally!

Beach BOOSTER was proud to be one of the many local sponsors of this great annual event that brings hundreds of motorcycle enthusiasts to Wasaga Beach each May. Riders from all over Ontario converged on Barrie Harley Davidson a pre-arranged time, regrouped and then took part in the very impressive “Thunder Run” to Wild Wing on Main Street Wasaga Beach!

Mary Ann and her staff at our local Wild Wing worked tirelessly on arranging all the details to make last year’s event a success and even bigger and better that the year before. This event continues to raise much needed funds and awareness for our Georgian Triangle Humane Society, with the donations growing each and every year.

The timing of the Wild Wing Bike Rally couldn’t be better for all of Wasaga Beach and its businesses, as it gives an early summer season BOOST in reminding the hundreds of participants of all the great things we have to offer them when they visit Wasaga Beach!

During last year’s event, I enjoyed welcoming many folks to The Beach and was amazed how many replied by saying it had been a long, long time since making the trip to our town! It was fun to see so many looking around at our beautiful and unique Town Centre of Stonebridge and asking “When did all this happen???”

“Competition Bureau Threatens to Dismantle Privacy Safeguards of Home Sales” *** My, how things have changed since I first started into Real Estate in 1988, and how they have stayed the same. Our world has become a living contradiction, we are required by law to not distribute information, then our law makers tell us to distribute the same information. Wow, this can get confusing! Over the past few years the controversy over allowing folks to show their homes privately for sale on the website operated and funded by the Canadian Real Estate Association has caused a lot of concern with professional REALTORS®, not all of us because of it taking away from our business, but for many of us; it's simply dangerous. This trend is asking through the Competition Bureau to give to the public “sensitive property access information, negotiated sale price and mortgage details” *** This will allow unlicensed “marketing companies” to provide this information to the consumer without the safeguard of interpretation of the market and conditions surrounding the sale, and at the same time simply putting You “out there!”.

As professional REALTORS®, we are helping most of our clients with their largest single material investment they will ever have in their lifetime. Is it not important for me to try to help you understand why there is competitive bidding for properties in the GTA and only 26 percent of the listings selling in Wasaga Beach? Is it not important for me to put the necessary marketing material in the right place where local Professionals, who have qualified buyers, can find it? Is it not important to negotiate with experience the terms of an agreement, not only to protect my client but all parties involved?
