Members of the team are multi-disciplined, enthusiastic and highly professional. They also enjoy meeting the crowd between each show. The troupe is led by Yves Milord, who has been performing for over 30 years and is well known by his colleagues as well as his clients all over the world. Yves is happy to bring his troupe back to Wasaga Beach after their amazing trampoline performances during a snow storm at Snowman Mania last February.

Lisa Hutchinson Band Plays Jazz in the Park July 31 The Town of Wasaga Beach is happy to be celebrating the 12th season of Jazz in the Park.

Every Tuesday in July and August, residents and visitors to the community are welcome to join us for an entertaining evening of both traditional and modern jazz music.

Holly HaireEllis, Special Events Coordinator for the Town of Wasaga Beach commented that “I tried to focus on modern jazz while still providing spectators with some of their traditional favourites as well as keeping the majority of the performers from the Georgian Triangle area.”

Point of View It is time to reconsider the need to hire lifeguards at Wasaga Beach, a popular spot for families and teenagers. The latest drowning tragedy last week should spark several conversations, including whether it is time to bring back the lifeguards at Wasaga Beach.

I worked as a lifeguard on the Wasaga Beach Patrol in 1989, along with 20 other patrollers who lived in the Wasaga Beach community for 4 months. We would get up and go for a run before our shift started, and then spend the day in our assigned tower, watching for struggling swimmers and dealing with other situations that arose throughout the day.

We would treat minor injuries (cuts and scrapes), and reunite parents with their lost children (who would somehow wander hundreds of metres down the beach before being located by the lifeguard in the next tower). We kept an eye on the water, and called in swimmers that were venturing too far from shore. We also had boats patrolling the shore line and we could radio for assistance if a swimmer was drifting past a certain point.

The beach patrollers contributed to the local economy on a daily basis - we frequented local establishments including bars and restaurants and grocery stores. We also increased visibility and generated positive publicity for Wasaga Beach.

Several of the patrollers participated in the Terry Fox swim a 14 km open water journey across the bay. I don't remember how much money was raised for this worthy cause, but I know the event was covered by several media types and the community benefitted from that exposure. We also hosted the Ontario Provincial Waterfront Championships that year, and our team of 6 patrollers finished first overall out of over 30 entries from across the province. The community of Wasaga Beach was very proud of us, and we ensured we maintained that respect every day.

The total cost for operating this program is probably in the neighbourhood of $100 000 a year. I believe there may be some confusion about where the responsibility lies for providing this service, and that there may be a liability issue as well. I believe that we were called Beach Patrollers in order to minimize the liability exposure, and were required to respond to a situation instead of preventing it (although we certainly prevented situations whenever possible). It is impossible to put a price on the value of a human life, but somebody decided that Wasaga Beach could no longer afford hiring lifeguards. With the contributions the patrollers offered, I disagree with this conclusion.

Parents and caregivers will always carry the primary responsibility for supervising their children, and must remain vigilant when the children are in or around the water.

However, I also hope we can re-visit the idea of hiring lifeguards/beach patrollers for Wasaga Beach.

Garden Club Celebrates

Past Presidents Don Miller, Adrian Schweiger, John McCartney with President Maureen Andersen

The Wasaga Beach Garden Club kicked off its 15th Anniversary with a Garden Tour and Picnic. Don Miller the founding President, Past Presidents Adrian Schweiger and John McCartney joined current President Maureen Andersen in her garden for the unveiling of the recently created Archives of the Club.

Dan Edwards dedicated many hours work to interviewing, gathering and organizing the last 15 years of Garden Club history. The archives include newspaper clippings, and many pictures of club activities including the association with Communities in Bloom. Pictures of our members, as well as bios of the current executive also mark the 15th year of history in the archives. Anniversary cake was enjoyed by the almost 60 members and guests in attendance.

If you would like to view a piece of Wasaga Beach history, the Wasaga Beach Garden Club meets the first Wednesday of each month, 7:15 pm, at the United Church, at 380 Zoo Park Road. Speaker for August is Linda Peacock, Master Gardener, informing us about “Goof Proof Roses for Our Area”. Membership is $15.00 for the first year, $10.00 thereafter. All with an interest in gardening are welcome.

Lake Huron Overview Lake Huron is the second largest Great Lake by surface area and the fifth largest freshwater lake in the world.

It has the longest shoreline of the Great Lakes, counting the shorelines of its 30,000 islands.

Manitoulin Island is the largest freshwater island in the world.

Georgian Bay and Saginaw Bay are the two largest bays on the Great Lakes.

Early explorers listed Georgian Bay as a separate sixth lake because it is nearly separated from the rest of Lake Huron by Manitoulin Island and the Bruce Peninsula.

Georgian Bay is large enough to be among the world's 20 largest lakes.

Huron receives the flow from both Lake Superior and Lake Michigan, but water flows through Lake Huron (retention time) much more quickly than through either of them.

Huron was the first of the Great Lakes to be discovered by European explorers.

Shipwrecks are scattered throughout the lake, with five bottomland preserves in Michigan and a national park in Ontario designated to protect the most historically significant ones.

The Lake Huron basin is heavily forested, sparsely populated, scenically beautiful, and economically dependent on its rich natural resources.

Schooner Town

Submitted by David J. Brunelle, OCT, Project Director, Southern Georgian Bay War of 1812 Bicentennial Committee Lieutenant Worsley and his crew constructed their winter quarters four miles from the mouth of the Nottawasaga River. This event took place in September 1814 just after the capture of the American ships the Tigress and Scorpion. At the end of the war 1812 plans were scrapped to build a naval base in Penetanguishene. The quarters at Schoonertown had burned down during the summer of 1815. Buildings were re-built in September by three of Lieutenant Wingfields (Commander of the Scorpian) men. By October, Commodore Sir Edward Owen decided on Schoonertown as the site for a temporary naval establishment on Lake Huron. At that time Captain P.S. Hambly was appointed as the Commanding officer. The purpose of the establishment was to repair and maintain ships, construct bateaux to carry provisions, and help guard commissary stores at the mouth of the river. Unfortunately, this site was prone to strong winds, a shifting sand bar, an unsheltered bay for ships, and lack of a suitable dockyard and storeroom facilities. It was recommended in July 1816

by Sir E. Owen to have Schoonertown transferred to Penetanguishene. The implementation of this decision was slightly delayed due to the road to Penetanguishene was rough and swampy.Schoonertown was abandoned in late 1817 and is now preserved with the Schoonertown parkette and is under the responsibility of Wasaga Beach Provincial Park.

2012 marks the 10th Anniversary of the Town of Wasaga Beach’s participation in the Communities in Bloom program. Given this anniversary, the Town is participating in the Full Program and has been evaluated on 6 specific criteria including tidiness, environmental awareness, natural and cultural heritage conservation, urban forestry, landscaped areas and floral displays.

Mayor Cal Patterson commented that “the Communities in Bloom program provides an opportunity for Wasaga Beach to showcase our community through a variety of services and programs. Recent initiatives such as the establishment of the Wasaga Beach Youth Centre, opening of the new Wasaga Beach Welcome Centre, enhanced street banner program, permanent transit system, newly created transit link to the Town of Collingwood and the Town’s Façade Improvement Program were taken into consideration while the Communities in Bloom judges conducted their review of the Town.” Two Communities in Bloom judges visited Wasaga Beach on Monday, July 16th through Wednesday, July 18th. The judges undertook a thorough analysis of the Town’s achievements in the program criteria noted above. The program provides a forum for the Town to take an inventory of programs, services and unique assets offered to residents and visitors to Wasaga Beach and receive valuable feedback from experienced and qualified judges.

The results will be announced at the National Awards Ceremonies, hosted this year by Edmonton Capital Region in Alberta on October 10th to the 13th.

Stayner Lawn Bowling Club On July 12th a group of bowlers from Barrie arrived at our greens to enjoy an evening of bowling on natural grass. Barrie's green are indoors on artificial turf. We played measured games and Australian Pairs games and then enjoyed desert and friendship.

This is the first of what we plan on as an annual challenge between Barrie and Stayner Bowlers.

July 23, another hot summer day, we hosted the John Prior Tournament at our greens. We played three games and enjoyed a delicious dinner. There were teams there from Barrie, Collingwood, Hanover, Midland and our own Stayner teams. There were 2 three game winners, both from Midland. Ron O'Sullivan's team placed first and Peggy Dundas' team placed second.

We are still doing our Monday and Thursday night jitneys and the hot summer has made our greens very fast and lovely to bowl on, thanks to our team of greens workers.

On the first day, the Air Canada pilot sadly packed his belongings into boxes, crates and suitcases. On the second day, he had the movers come and collect his things. On the third day, he sat down for the last time at their beautiful dining-room table, by candle-light; he put on some soft background music, and feasted on a pound of shrimp, a jar of caviar, and a bottle of spring-water.

When he'd finished, he went into each and every room and deposited a few half-eaten shrimps dipped in caviar into the hollow center of the curtain rods. He then cleaned up the kitchen and left.

On the fourth day, the wife came back with her new boyfriend, and at first all was bliss. Then, slowly, the house began to smell. They tried everything; cleaning, mopping, and airing-out the place. Vents were checked for dead rodents, and carpets were steam cleaned. Air fresheners were hung everywhere. Exterminators were brought in to set off gas canisters, during which time the two had to move out for a few days, and in the end they even paid to replace the expensive wool carpeting. Nothing worked! People stopped coming over to visit. Repairmen refused to work in the house. The maid quit. Finally, they couldn't take the stench any longer, and decided they had to move, but a month later - even though they'd cut their price in half - they couldn't find a buyer for such a stinky house. Word got out and eventually even the local realtors refused to return their calls.Finally, unable to wait any longer for a purchaser, they had to borrow a huge sum of money from the bank to purchase a new place. Then the ex (Air Canada pilot) called the woman and asked how things were going. She told him the saga of the rotting house. He listened politely and said that he missed his old home terribly and would be willing to reduce his divorce settlement in exchange for having the house. Knowing he could have no idea how bad the smell really was, she agreed on a price that was only 1/10th of what the house had been worth ... but only if he would sign the papers that very day. He agreed, and within two hours her lawyers delivered the completed paper work. A week later the woman and her boyfriend stood smiling as they watched the moving company pack everything to take to their new home . . .

And to spite the ex-husband, they even took the curtain rods.

Chamber of Commerce Promote Wasaga Beach Committee, I have been hearing from people that we do not have enough of the family tourism business like we use to have in the past. I have been researching resort town tourism information to see what can be done to create programs to attract families to visit and vacation in our area.

I found a few interesting things so far. The “Go RVing” Canada Coalition reports that more RVs are owned by 35-to-54 year olds than any other age group. There are over 800,000 RVs on the road in Canada and 40% of RV families have children. 90% of owners say it is the best way to travel with kids. 90% of RVers say seeing the country is their top priority. RV owners are more likely to spend time enjoying Canadian tourism than travelling abroad. RV owners were twice as likely to spend vacation time in Canada as non RV owners.

This prompted me to go to Google and ask how many RV parks there are in the Wasaga Beach vicinity.

WorldWeb.com offers detailed information including amenities, rates, descriptions and more on a large variety of Wasaga Beach campgrounds. If you are a Wasaga Beach campground or RV park and your property is not listed in the WorldWeb.com directory, it only takes a few minutes to add a listing and guess what? It’s free to add your listing. I found five listings for Wasaga Beach and most of them are right in the town and walking distance from the beach.

With this kind of opportunity it makes me ask a lot of questions. Do these park managers know they are sitting on a gold mine? And if they collaborated with other local businesses to host RV events and created bundled RV visitor experience packages in Wasaga Beach for RVers do they know that they could take this to a whole new level of tourism for the town? For example what if an RV park in Wasaga Beach offered a special rate on a Nottawasaga Bay sunset cruise to its RV family?

Let me know what you think Wasagians. How can we create a concerted draw for RVers that will bring their families to our town? Seems to me this is a good formula for getting the family tourism segment interested to come to our town while we cultivate the needs of their kids to make them want to come back here when they are older and use the host of amenities Wasaga Beach has to offer including our hotel and motel accommodations and restaurants.

In the early 1960s, the shipyards of Collingwood were working overtime, turning out new vessels. Since they had begun in the 19th century, Collingwood’s ship building yards including the Watts boatyard, turned out thousands of fishing boats, steamers, freighters, tugs, frigates, sand suckers, and ore boats.

Now, in the ’60s, there was a new demand for freighters. One by one, they came off the busy slips at Collingwood, ships that began as numbered hulls but ended up with proud names and long careers on both the Great Lakes and on saltwater.

Two of them were launched only two months apart. The first was originally named the Montreal only to change her name to the French River. She sailed on the Lake Ontario-St. Lawrence run, serving Canada Steamship Lines freight terminals. Finally, in 1981, the French River was sold to the Jensen Line and renamed the Jensen Star.

Now this Collingwood built ship was destined for saltwater, trading to, Algeria and Morocco. Another name change found her sailing as the Woodland, hauling steel to Chicago and newsprint to Toledo. Today, the ship once known as the French River is sailing the waters off the Bahamas Islands.

The Way Wasaga Was...by Joe Bickerstaff Another one of our once great hotels was the Nancy Villa.

The Mosley Street location close to what is now 3rd Street was just steps away from the action at main Street and Beach Drive, but sitting on the river’s edge opposite Nancy Island also offered a beautiful, picturesque setting.

One of the original buildings of the hotel & motel complex had been moved from down river, by floating it to the hotels location. This building had a date inscribed showing it dating back to 1901.

The popular hotel was owned and operated by Marjorie and Lloyd Dyer, who were known for their welcoming of guests to their modern hotel/motel, dining room and in later years the licensed Port Hole Lounge that overlooked the river.

Live entertainment was offered in the Port Hole Lounge year ‘round, catering to the summer crowds and the new found winter customers who enjoyed snowmobiling in Wasaga Beach and on the then frozen river. Although known as a great family resort, the Nancy Villa was also one of the many "Hot Spots" in The Beach, along with the Windjammer Room of the Capstan Inn, the Dyconia, The Dardanella and the El Morocco.

I fondly remember Marj Dyer welcoming me as a part of a large group of regular young “guests” at the Nancy Villa on many evenings as we enjoyed beverages and the great live entertainment late into the night… but then again showing her concern for the group to enjoy a healthy, full breakfast as we made our way back the next morning.

"The Villa’s” reputation as a well run, family friendly inn spread beyond Wasaga Beach as many Collingwood families had weddings and other special occasions there. Former Prime Minister John Diefenbaker once stayed at our Nancy Villa!

Although I enjoy reminiscing about this once great Wasaga Beach landmark, I am often saddened as I travel by it’s former location that is simply designated as “Nancy Lot”, a seldom used, town owned parking lot.

Yep… in a lot of ways, “they paved paradise… and put up a parking lot”!

The music of Hunnay! might best be defined as a well worn slipper you can’t wait to slip on! With one foot stuck in the past as to their traditional, old-timey style and the other stepping into the here and now, with contemporary themes and progressive pop, rock, blues and country sounds.

After years of performing as a duo, Laura Somers and Karen A. Witt joined forces with Lee Chomiak (drummer/producer) who caught the girls performing one fateful night and was drawn in by their wonderful songs and gorgeous vocals. The three soon began working together; writing, recording and producing their first full length album “The Other Side of the Coin”. The next order of business was to invite some very talented musicians to come on board and fill out the sound. Along with Lee’s power house drumming (he has worked with Alannah Miles, Amanda Marshall and Blue Rodeo) there is David G. Rose (former bass guitarist with The David Wilcox Band) and his unsurpassed unique style of playing and backing vocals. Guitarist Tim Irvine’s bold and beautiful lead and rhythm work, extraordinaire. Last but certainly not least, is Diane Suite on keyboards and backing vocals who has complimented the line-up with her tasteful melodic style and incredible passion.

And so the band “Hunnay!” (Pronounced as James Brown would have shouted out “Honey!”) was born! They are delighted to be performing at the fundraising event for the Wasaga Beach Fire Department as well as some very talented musical guests... especially since Lee Chomiak’s grandfather was the very first Wasaga Beach Fire Chief! Lee would like to give a shout out to Mike McWilliam, the current Fire Chief and long time friend. The fundraiser will also be supporting the Wasaga Beach Youth Centre so please join us for some great music and a lot of fun!!

Proudly Sponsored by According to Peng the first album was more traditional Chinese bridging two cultures together. “Paper Eagle had more of a jazz influence with a smoother sound.” Toshi further explains: “The second album is clearer in comparison with the first album as each song was different; we were still finding a way to fit our style into the song. The second album was more stable.” The main difference between the two albums Peng says it sounds more like a “live” version than a studio sound.

I had the pleasure of meeting Peng Yuwen and Toshi from SIZHUKONG a jazz quintet from Taiwan during Canadian Music Week. This was their first trip to Canada making their Toronto debut with three showcases during the Canadian Music Festival.

Founded in 2005, SIZHUKONG brings together a variety of musicianship and creates the most unique and diverse Jazz sound in this era of music. A reporter from “All About Jazz.com” compared them to Weather Report, “if Weather Report were from Taiwan it would sound like SIZHUKONG.” Toshi explains: “That’s how I would describe our band at times, a lot of jazz harmony style, it’s really outstanding just like Weather Report.”

Half of their members play traditional Chinese instruments while half are jazz musicians. Peng “We are trying to keep the beauty of our tradition by bringing improvisation and jazz into our group. Our audience can feel both the traditional and modern music.”

Toshi, one of the five-members, is Japanese and his mother is Taiwanese. He grew up in Japan and attended Berkley in Boston where he studied Jazz. His interest was to study Chinese. “After I graduated from Berkley I wanted to study Chinese - it was something I was interested in as a kid and didn’t get an opportunity to study the language.”

The name of the band SIZHUKONG is a multi-layered unique word that sounds like music. Members of the band found this word in a Chinese medical dictionary. Peng explains that Chinese characters are defined with the following meaning: SI is silk, ZHU is bamboo and KONG is a pressure point located by your temple to release stress. Peng says “Our music makes people happy and healthy”.

When asked what they expected to accomplish at the Canadian Music Festival they were excited to be performing in North America as they toured in Central America previously and people loved their music there and are hoping to open doors to Canada. Toshi says that they are very happy to be bringing their interpretation and to share it with Canadians.

Look forward to their next album in the coming months. This is one jazz band not to be missed. I truly enjoyed their performance at the Tranzac Club downtown Toronto and I highly recommend anyone who loves jazz or hasn’t experienced jazz to attend one of their concerts. Hope to see SIZHUKONG perform again in Canada.
