Wasaga Beach Short Film Festival January 26th

The Wasaga Beach Chamber of Commerce will be hosting its Second Annual Wasaga Beach Short Film Festival (WBSFF) View and Vote and Red Carpet Gala Awards events that will take place at the Wasaga Beach RecPlex,1724 Mosley Street on Saturday, January 26th, 2013.

The WBSFF is unlike any other film festival, it is a unique opportunity for grass roots film enthusiasts to compete on an even playing field. The WBSFF aims to showcase the best in category short films submitted by individuals, groups, companies, students and associations. Our film festival vision “Sundance North” is based on capturing the imagination of film makers and actors at the grass roots level creating an opportunity for international exposure while eliminating entry barriers and providing a focus for talent, passion, capability and achievement. We hope to leverage the natural beauty of our location to inspire our participants to produce films that will promote the beauty, vibrancy, vitality and quality of life of Wasaga Beach while honouring its natural ecosystems, visitors, residents and businesses http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TxZUxeJFJ2g&sns=em The short films submitted are between four and eight minutes in length and fit in one of the following categories: Action/Comedy and Documentary. Each film entry must contain the name of Wasaga Beach in its title and/or the story of the film must demonstrate that it is taking place in Wasaga Beach, Ontario and/or the shooting location of the Film is in Wasaga Beach, Ontario.

Two other categories for the second annual WBSFF include Video Advertisement (30 second video) for a business located in Wasaga Beach or that serves Wasaga Beach and Music Video (3 minute video).

The films will be judged online from the WBSFF You Tube® channel for like votes prior to two community screenings for voting at Wasaga Beach, Ontario scheduled for January 26th, 2013. The Viewing and voting will be followed by a Red Carpet Gala Awards Night hosted by the Wasaga Beach Chamber of Commerce.

The entire day will be filled with artist exhibits, music performances, dancers and entertainers. You can check out the line-up at www.wasagafilmfestival.com.

Wasaga Beach was the first beach in North America to be recognized as a “Blue Flag Beach”, an international eco award, for clean beaches. Over two million people visit Wasaga Beach every summer to stroll the shores of the longest freshwater beach in the world, swim in warm clean waters and enjoy the panoramic Mountain View across the Georgian Bay. We intend to roll out the “Blue Flag Beach” carpet to our film festival partners and participants for our Second Annual Wasaga Beach Film Festival scheduled for January 26th, 2013.

Purchase your View and Vote ticket ($3.00 each or Family Pass for $5.00) films scheduled to start at 11:00 am and 2:00 pm includes all the entertainment, artist exhibits and music performances. The tickets for the Red Carpet Gala Awards are $20.00 each. Doors open for the Red Carpet Gala Awards in the Oakview Room at the Wasaga Beach RecPlex at 6:30 pm. The Red Carpet Gala tickets are also good for all day admission.

Golden Apple Restaurant Closes in Stayner

The final meeting of the Stayner Lions Club at the Golden Apple Restaurant last week. The club has held its regular dinner meetings there since 1956. (That's 57 years if your doing the math in your head.) Over the years they have had several hosts who served us most ably, but none more so than Leslie Kinnear, seen here sitting between Lion Pete Jerry and Lion Fred Stever. Standing behind those three are Lions Len Menecola, Bob Charlton, Claire Weston, Kim McArthur, Sandra Squire John Squire, Carrie Plater, Ken Stickwood, Bob Johnson, John Gascho, Bill Ives, Doug Inkster, Robert Walker & Shawn Davidson. They say you never knowingly do anything for the last time without regret, and this was certainly true this evening. We are very sorry to see the Apple close after such a long journey together, but we wish Leslie the very best as she sets out on this new chapter in her life. Thanks for everything Leslie!

This month, the exciting 2nd Annual Wasaga Beach Short Film Festival takes place and this great event is well on its way to becoming Sundance North! A growing vibrant annual film festival will mean great things for Wasaga Beach! Be sure to be a part of this year's event by attending the Vew & Vote and the Red Carpet Gala, all happening at The RecPlex, Saturday January 26. February gives us a chance to get out and enjoy some great family fun at our very own Winter Carnival as Snowman Mania takes place with activities at locations throughout town on Family Day Weekend. Senior Fraud Prevention In my last article I discussed identity theft and some tips that if followed could prevent you from becoming a victim. Senior Fraud is a crime that could affects a growing population in our community if we do not take action to stop it. Education is a major way to prevent this type of crime.

One factor in most frauds is that the con artist attempts to rush the victim into crime. In addition in senior frauds we see the introduction in many of emotions being played on. Seniors are at a greater risk of becoming a victim of fraud for the following reasons: 1) Isolation – as you get older friends and family pass away. Leaving the senior with no trustworthy person to confide in.

2) More Leisure time – that 40 plus hour a week job you retired from is no longer there. Now you are around to answer that telephone scam or fraud that you received in your e-mail.

3) Trusting – your generation trusted people. A great quality if applied with an ounce of scepticism.

4) Income and Assets – some seniors did very well in their careers before retiring and as such are well off.

Unfortunately this attracts con artists.

Almost on a monthly basis I am asked to talk to a group or organization about fraud prevention, senior fraud prevention or identity theft prevention. So over my next couple of articles I plan to discuss the above, starting with identity theft.

One factor that contributes to this crime is social media and the personal information people still upload.

Identity theft occurs when someone accesses another individual's personal information such as their name, date of birth and SIN. I would like to offer the following tips to prevent you from becoming a victim of identity theft: Only give out your personal or financial information to individuals you know and trust and only give that person what is needed, no more. · Never post personal information on social media sites; even if you feel you have all the privacy settings to protect your information, these settings and other get changed regularly by social media sites. If you are not aware of these changes you could be left vulnerable to identity theft. · Shred all financial documents that you would have thrown out. This includes those “pre-approved credit card notices”. Shredders are inexpensive; if possible get a crosscut shredder. · Consider changing all your financial documents and bills to paperless. · Pick up your mail regularly, report any missing or damaged mail to both Canada Post and the Police. · Always inspect your bills for any discrepancies and if you find one contact that billing agency immediately. You may find out that someone, not you, has been making purchases on your account. · Do not respond to any unsolicited offers via e-mail, the Internet or the telephone. · Do not carry your Social Insurance Number (SIN) card with you, keep it in a secure place and only have it with you when you are going to use it. · Ensure your computer has up to date anti-virus and spyware and your firewall is on and working properly. If in doubt talk to your Internet Provider, they will assist you or have a chat with the many Computer Stores in the area. · When disposing your old computers remove the hard drive and destroy it. (a big hammer works well) · If you store personal or financial information on your wireless devices, when you get a new one erase all information on it then destroy it so it will not work. · Never do any financial transactions when link to free wireless services at a business, store or restaurant. · Always remember to protect your debit and credit cards and your pin numbers. · Check your credit report from time to time.

The Canine Vision Canada program is the longest standing program of The Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides. Since 1985, Canine Vision Dog Guides have been enriching the lives of Canadians, blind or visually impaired. These Dog Guides are trained to assist their handlers in navigating obstacles typically found on most daily routes, including curbs, steps and crowds. Noble attends most Wasaga Beach Lions meetings and is a favorite with all the members. At the last meeting, he led all members in the singing of “O’Canada!”

Jesse McFaddin from RIZE Beach Corner recently had the pleasure of interviewing the remarkable Japanese rock star, Jesse McFaddin, via Skype from Japan. I met Jesse back in March when his band presented two showcases at the Canadian Music Week in Toronto, just before they flew to New York to perform at Webster Hall. Jesse is the front man for the Japanese rock band RIZE. He also just released his first solo project, STAND UP. He has also proven careers as Music Producer / Composer, as well as being a "Fashion Icon" among youngsters with his appearances on SONY CM + Vans sponsored 2009 Live Tour. In addition to gracing the cover of various fashion magazines, Jesse attended Fashion Week TOKYO, where he was the spokesperson as well as a model for the French casual brand “Girbaud” who calls attention to the serious environmental problems through “NO WATER, NO CHEMICAL”. Jesse is the son of Char who is considered a "musician's musician" rock guitarist pioneer. He has a prominent career which includes collaborations with many top ranked artists such as: Stevie Salas, Jeff Beck, Brian Setzer, to name a few. RIZE's rhythm section is comprised of N.K. on the Drums and KenKen on bass. They're actually brothers with the famous female rock vocalist Mari Kaneko (Known as the Japanese Janis Joplin) and their father the established rock drummer – Johnny Yoshinaga. So, RIZE has been cultivating their unique "Alternative rock” sound & presence from the start - making them characteristically different from other bands in the Japanese rock scene. Rize is eager to inspire the International market with their style of music singing in English and Japanese. They want to become an "international hub" between the East and West through "the power of music to activate the world when faced with the Tohoku disaster. With the recent sensation of Gangnam Style from Korea, music from Asia is becoming more and more prominent worldwide. With his first solo project, STAND UP, release November 11th Jesse chose to select amongst the many auditions that applied to produce an album with him. “The artist I selected is from Okayama. Although he didn't have any experience, in some aspects he has more talent than I do. It has a roughness that's great for a debut album, and just as the album title "Stand up!" says, this is an album in which we all stood up.” US Launch of his clothing line, Slip&Co which will officially debut in the US at the iconic MAGIC industry only retail trade show. Both the group, RIZE, and the lead singer, Jesse McFaddin, are major icons in the Japanese music and pop culture scenes.

“You can change the future of your community or you can sit back and allow whatever happens to happen.” (Jack McCall, Small Town Survival Manual 1988:14) Right now in our economic times, towns are really not so different from businesses; they need to keep re-inventing themselves. In the sixties, towns grew based along the lines of economic expansion that were more or less dictated by grand economic plans. Towns would all do well, or all do badly. For example, if a town happened to be close to a rail line, a major highway or a major project development chances are it would grow and thrive.

No pain….no gain…

These days the picture is very uneven. Successful towns are now driven primarily by people who are passionate and creative, who see opportunity and go for it. Successful communities have people with get up and go type spirit. What worked a generation ago just may not work today and new ways of thinking and news ways of organizing and doing things must be applied to get the results the community needs and wants.

As an example our community young adults can be engaged to use their power as asset builders and change agents. This means listening to their input and including them in decision making. Such a group as the Wasaga Beach Chamber of Commerce “Business Under Forty” have the skills, talent and stamina to create positive change in our community.

Supporting their efforts could go a long way in re-inventing Wasaga Beach.

Sectors of the community such as schools, congregations, businesses, youth, human service, and health-care organizations can be engaged and commissioned to integrate our efforts across seniors, adults and youth to create an assetbuilding culture and to contribute fully to our community’s healthy development and overall quality of life.

Civic decisions can be driven more from a community shared vision approach influencing decision makers and opinion leaders to leverage financial, media, and policy resources in support of positive community transformation to re-invent its economic, environmental and social structures.

These are not tasks to complete one by one in sequence.

Instead relationships are strengthened within and between these spheres of influence across the community. No longer can pockets of progress continue without integrating the efforts of the entire community. Work towards creating a web of interconnected efforts that support one another will build strength and confidence to take on projects that will create overall value for the community. The goodwill created from these efforts will engender widespread support to truly share resources for the greater good of the community.

Now it is time to take responsibility and take advantage of the efforts by our civic leaders that have worked towards developing a shared vision for Wasaga Beach and take these efforts to the next level and produce results. We need to create a Team Wasaga that integrates our overall efforts across all businesses, our partners such as Ontario Parks, residents and service organizations across our community and move forward.

Whisky in the Wilderness

Simcoe County's early settlers were hardworking, God-fearing people who scratched a living out of the wilderness. Methodists, Anglicans, Presbyterians and Catholics...they attended their churches on Sunday and laboured in the fields the rest of the week. But the hardness of life at the midpoint of the 19th Century was punctuated by frequent social gatherings. Bees, weddings, auction sales and political meetings offered respite from the drudgery of clearing the forest and ploughing fields.

Such events also gave settlers a chance to sip of the "water of life." The Scots called it usquebaugh (pronounced wusky-bah). To the Irish it was known as uisge beatha (uski-baytha). The Latin name was acqua virtae. In 1755, the pioneering lexicographer, Dr. Samuel Johnson, gave it a formal name. "Wiskey," he called it in his famous dictionary. And whisky is what they drank in the backwoods of Upper Canada. By 1850 over 200 distilleries were producing the strong spirit.

Whisky was known by many names such as stagger juice, noise paint, dead-and-gone, tangle leg and forty-rod tuff. Most of Ontario's whisky was of dubious quality, often compared to fire and brimstone. One contemporary writer described the product of his local distillery as tasting like it was "made of frosty potatoes, hemlock, pumpkins and black mouldy rye."

But drink it our great-great grandparents did, and in huge quantities. At almost every social gathering, whisky was served in abundance and drunk with abandon! And then there were scores of inns in Simcoe all selling pottery crocks or mugs filled with distillations of rye, wheat and corn. Even the miller got into the trade, turning a 50 pound bushel of grain into three gallons of hard spirits.

Beach BOOSTER supports fun and safe sledding

Welcome Wasaga Beach trail rider!

Our club has managed to get in on the early snow fall this season and we were one of the few areas that were able to capitalize on the first snow fall opening trails for the past few weeks. Mother Nature is always in charge and we were forced to close the trails temporarily till the next blast of winter. Our trails are ready and we are just one winter storm from reopening to continue this winter season. Limited conditions are still available in parts of the province. Always check the OFSC Trail Guide for sledding opportunities.

With the amount of sleds in town last week end, it was encouraging to see sledders enjoying all we have to offer here in Wasaga Beach . We are planning our Snowman Mania Ride for Sunday February 17 and hope all will come out and support the run.

The trail riding we did manage to get in so far enabled us to experience all the new trail developments that were under taken over the summer months and we are very pleased with the trail improvements. With over 100 K of trails that your local club manages, trail improvements are an ongoing endeavor.

THINK SNOW and we will all be back on the trails as soon as possible.

The Way Wasaga Was Main Street and Main Beach...by Joe Bickerstaff

Since the early part of this century, our Main Beach… and our Main Street have been the hub of our tourism industry and an entertainment centre!

Our Main Street became a vibrant and exciting place to shop, meet, dine and be entertained… while our grand beachfront hotels rivalled those anywhere and welcomed visitors with their modern facilities offering the most beautiful beach and views in the world. Great entertainment was available everywhere in the Main Beach area… including Playland Park… one of Canada’s Largest Amusement Parks!

For years we have had dreams of building on what was created in the glory years of Wasaga Beach when we were known as Canada’s Premiere Beachfront Resort! In the sixties, we had reached a point where although we had all in place… we needed to stay in tune with what the tourists of the day were looking for!

Included here is a rendering of what some “wide-awake” folks saw for our Main Street and Main Beach area. It shows some great additions to our wonderful beach area, including a grand pier at the foot of Main Street, a break-wall/pier to protect the spit and the river’s mouth, development on the beachfront and even a marina in the protected river on the spit.

What’s interesting to note is the caption under this drawing… wondering what became of these great ideas for development… in order to stay current with our dreams of remaining a truly world class beach resort! This drawing and comment were published by a local newspaper in 1966!

It seems that almost 50 years ago… we were wondering when the needed improvements to our Main Beach and Main Street area were going to be acted upon! Now, in 2013 as Visioning Meetings continue and with the possible appointment of Don May of Almost There Inc. as Development/Project Manager of Main Beach development, perhaps we can look forward to seeing some welcome improvements to this important part of our town.

Our Main Street and Main Beach must be revitalized and once again be recognized as the commercial and entertainment hub of our tourism industry!
