THE HEARTH
h:EARTH
/härTH/: a symbol of one’s home
YOU ARE HERE
h:EARTH is a basic needs center for those who are experiencing homelessness. Its mission is to provide any person with the space and tools to access privacy, safety, and choice. Although not a home, h:EARTH maintains residential characteristics to help its users orient themselves and identify with its space. Here, users are welcomed by warmth and made to feel like they belong.
RECLAIMING SPACE | RESTORE BELONGING.
The diagram below represents the centralized living room as a symbol of place and a platform for choice. Each branch or avenue extending from the core represents an opportunity for users to make dignif ied decisions in a safe environment.
DESIGNERS’ CONCEPT STATEMENT DERIVED FROM CHRISTIAN NORBERG-SCHULZ’S “GENIUS LOCI: TOWARDS A PHENOMENOLOGY OF ARCHITECTURE.” If “place” is def ined as the totality of concrete things that makes up the distinct space where life occurs, then we must consider the profound effects of homelessness on human identity. A lack of sense of place may be experienced by those who feel stripped of their basic human rights to safety, privacy, and dignity. An architectural solution that seeks to help those in need through physical orientation, self-identif ication, and provided opportunities for control is one that empowers its users to reclaim their sense of place and belonging.
CHOICE SAFETY PRIVACY
THE FACADE: FAVELA PAINTING OUTCOMES
LIVING ROOM AS CENTER
Favela Paintings began as an approach to restore pride and hope to communities that have been struck down by poverty and challenging times. Grounded on the principle of creating a more inclusive world, Favela has grown into both a Foundation and Academy that use art for social change. Favela Painting projects can be thought of as “organic global art interventions” that engage the local community and create multifaceted impact. Although the murals may attract positive attention through bold and uplifting graphics, the emotional value of Favela Paintings is undeniable.
LIVING ROOM
“The artworks are a huge impulse to local pride enterprise, perceived safety and sense of community. Residents are prouder, happier and feel more connected.”

Reported by the HUD as of January 2018, Ohio has an estimated 10,249 people experiencing homelessness on any given day. Cleveland, Ohio is the sixth poorest city in the United States and has seen a 25% increase in homelessness since 2015. Although these statistics alone are staggering, the graphs above further reveal dangerously off-balance demographics of people experiencing these struggles. The reality is harsh but it must be acknowledged with clarity: The epidemic of homelessness is greatly influenced by the unjust racial bias that exists within the political and social structures of society at large. In order to seek improvement, we must seek reform.

This collage shows a visual representation of an experiential exercise completed encompassing the emotion felt through the poems of Alan Shapiro within the Night of the Republic. From this collage, the materials for Alleviare were developed. Materials such as copper, metal mesh, biophilia, and wood began to shape the aesthetic within the interior. Other materials were then chosen based on their durability,
By incorporating a barber shop upon the storefront, Alleviare aims to target and envelop the local demographic of Akron. Research shows the largest demographic of the homeless in Akron are African American. The barber shop serves as a cultural awareness amenity.
reception 2 A K RO N , O H Akron, Ohio serves as one of the fastest growing homeless cities in Ohio. Previously home to the controversial “Tent City”, Akron is in need of a basic needs center within the shown Goodyear Boulevard region. Close by is the Hope and Healing Battered Women’s Shelter, a hospital, local stores and food shops, as well as public transportation along the main street. Choosing to offset the site by pushing back the storefront into the landscape adds privacy for those not wanting to be put on display, while remaining accesible and in sight from the neighboring bus stop.
Unique 4-digit code customized by user.
One of the main goals of Alleviare’s facility is to ensure security , privacy and safety for all users. Providing a self-operated locker system, for items such as weapons and drugs, allows for Alleviare to maintain a safe environment. This locker system allows users to input their own personal 4-digit code, ensuring their privacy.
