UPTOWN

BRIDGET TIPTON | FALL 2018

Uptown Uptown is both a place and a project, developed as a point of connection between downtown Cleveland and the cultural, educational and health care institutions located within University Circle. Uptown

Uptown, the project, started as a $66 million investment to create mixed-use development on previously underutilized property on Euclid. The majority of the development has occurred between Cornell Road and E. 117th. The first phase of the work completed in 2012 and other projects are in actively in progress. Uptown, the place, provides new places to live, eat and to be entertained. As a recent addition to the Cleveland area, how this development will be incorporated into the collective identity of University Circle and the Cleveland area is still being discovered.

The development of Uptown included substantial ($200 million) transportation-oriented development through road improvements on Euclid Avenue, the increased presence of the Healthline bus route, and a new Little Italy RTA station. This infrastructure investment greatly increased the connection of downtown to University Circle.

While there is little to no public green space within the boundary of Uptown, there is significant green space within walking distance. The public gardens, green space, campus, and cemeteries are manicured and well kept.

The buildings highlighted above are Uptown, Phase 1 and 2, also known as “The Wall.” This project was designed by Stanley Saitowitz, Natoma Architects as a combination of three and five story buildings with two story glass storefronts. This project aims to accomplish within the block, what Uptown as a place aims to accomplish within Cleveland, block porosity to encourage connectivity.

There is a level of honesty about this project/building, it does not try to appear as though it belongs or blend in. The architect argues that it is contextual, however the result is completely transitory. It is a space without place, where the residents live temporarily, moving on before they get bored.
