NOTE EDITOR’S

Architecture is the cornerstone of our built environment, a language that speaks volumes about our values, aspirations, and desires. It has the power to transform a mere structure into a sanctuary, a place that reflects our individuality and nurtures our well-being. In this edition of BGC Home Magazine, we explore the significance of architectural design in the home and how it can shape our daily lives.

As our world underwent significant changes over the past years, our homes have evolved into multifunctional spaces that cater to our diverse needs. They have become sanctuaries where we work, learn, relax, and connect with loved ones. Architectural design plays a pivotal role in ensuring that these spaces are not only aesthetically pleasing but also functional and adaptable.

Just as travel broadens our horizons and enriches our lives, architectural design offers us a passport to innovation and creativity. Drawing inspiration from different architectural styles and influences allows us to bring a touch of the world into our homes, creating spaces that transcend boundaries and embody our unique experiences.

Through the pages of this magazine, we invite you to embark on a journey that celebrates architectural diversity. From modern minimalism to classic elegance, we explore how different design philosophies can transform our living spaces. We delve into the intricate details that make a house a home, from the choice of materials to the spatial arrangement, and how they contribute to our comfort and well-being.

About the cover

Design plays an important role in creating a space that is functional, comfortable, and inspiring. Impeccable design allows a house to become a home, making it more liveable.

The Importance of Design

Design is not just about aesthetics, it's about creating a space that reflects who you are, how you live, and what you value. Your home should be a reflection of your personality, your style, and your story. It's not just a place to live, it's a place to express yourself.

Home design is more than just aesthetics, design plays a crucial role in creating a space that is functional, comfortable, and inspiring. Impeccable design allows a house to become a home, making it more liveable. From the floor plan layout to the choice of materials and finishes, every design decision contributes to the overall atmosphere and feel of a home.

But perhaps the most exciting thing about home design is the way it allows you to create a space that's uniquely yours, a reflection of who you are and what you value. It's a chance to showcase your individuality and design a home to create new memories and traditions, gather with family and friends, and enjoy the simple pleasures of everyday life.

In the latest edition of our BGC Home Magazine, we dive into the world of home design, exploring the evolution of trends and floor plans throughout the decades. We also share the latest design features, trends, and tips to help you unlock the full potential of your home.

We believe that design is an exciting personal journey, and we hope our magazine inspires you to embark on your own. Whether you're looking to update your home's decor or completely overhaul its layout, there's no limit to what you can achieve with the power of design.

Discover East Village

Nestled in the heart of the vibrant coastal city of Fremantle, just a short walk from the cappuccino strip, restaurants and train station, the East Village at Knutsford initiative has transformed the area into a thriving hub of creativity and sustainability. Let’s delve into how East Village will positively impact the lives of both visitors and residents.

SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES

In line with the global push for environmental consciousness, East Village prioritised sustainability in its development plans. Life is all about learning and for this reason, every aspect of East Village has been carefully designed to provide valuable lessons on embracing a more sustainable way of living.

ENERGY

Effortlessly embracing the principles of One Planet Living, East Village at Knutsford will deliver a connected community of 36 energy efficient homes featuring a micro grid supply network for water and power derived from 100% renewable sources – the first of its kind in WA. In addition, passive solar design will provide several benefits, with household energy costs expected to be reduced by up to 50%.

WATERWISE LIVING

The waterwise initiatives that will be performed at East Village include stormwater recycling for plants, rainwater use in hot water systems, toilets and washing machines, plus a strata-owned bore for irrigation.

FEATURE

BIODIVERSITY

The village will also boast many green streetscapes which in turn will offer a range of passive climate-responsible design benefits. The architecturally designed landscaping that will be seen includes native garden beds, edible produce, and rain gardens for collecting and treating stormwater.

East Village at Knutsford serves as an inspiration for neighbourhoods around the world.

There's no place like home

Nature lovers Emilee and Chris have finally achieved their dream of owning a family home in Aveley after seven years of renting in the area. Nestled in a quiet street with untouched bushland across the road, they feel incredibly lucky to raise their family in a location that will never be developed.

Seeking a practical and lowmaintenance home with ample storage space and a timeless minimalist design, Emilee and Chris took advantage of government grants for new builds and started their building journey. With BGC Home, the couple were able to bring their vision to life, making upgrades to the kitchen and ensuite, and even adding a powder room.

The couple's favourite part of the process was prestart, where they made all their design choices and saw their dream home take shape. They also enjoyed watching their new family home being built from the ground up. "We lived 5 minutes away from our block, so we would visit or drive by most days. The excitement was real whenever we would notice something had been done," Emilee said. Now settled in their new home, Emilee and Chris cherish every moment. From being greeted by the sight of wild kangaroos and peacocks right at their front door to cosying up in their very own theatre room, the young family couldn’t be happier.

“We just love spending time at home now. We feel so lucky and blessed this is actually our home,” said Emilee. Although their build had delays due to the current contraints of the building industry, Emilee and Chris feel now that the wait was definitely worth it. While there are still landscaping projects and a pool installation to look forward to, they're just happy to be home.

Bullsbrook Dream Home

After purchasing a house and land package at just 21 years old, Chari has settled into her dream home in the northern suburbs of Bullsbrook.

As a chef, Chari’s decision to build her own home came from a desire for independence and stability. She wanted a space that was truly hers, where she wouldn't have to worry about leasing arrangements or contributing to someone else's mortgage. With the help of HomeStart, Chari was able to choose the perfect block of land in the same area she grew up in.

Embracing the idea of "less is more," Chari worked with HomeStart to design a home from scratch that was modern, minimalist, and reflected her unique style and needs. Together, they drew a blueprint of her dream home, focusing on a backyard for her dog, and a large, open kitchen and living area.

Although the building process wasn't without its challenges, Chari was patient and remained positive throughout the journey, enjoying the process of selecting materials and watching her dream home come together.

Now that she's moved in, Chari is enjoying making the space her own. With a love of simplicity and modern design, she’s added indoor plants, embraced a minimalist colour palette, and prioritised the heart of the home – the kitchen and living area – where she loves to entertain guests and unwind in her own peaceful environment.

Getting the help of a skilled agent can be a smart move in ensuring your property is market-ready and appeals to potential buyers.

Stage your way to success

Thoughtful home staging can create a space that potential buyers will fall in love with and achieve a quick sale at the best possible price. Use these design techniques to show off your home's true potential.

KEEP IT NEUTRAL AND MINIMAL

A neutral design makes your home more appealing to a wider range of buyers. Think of it as a blank canvas for buyers to envision themselves making their own, without being distracted by your personal style.

BOOST YOUR CURB APPEAL

You want your home to make a great impression, so a fresh coat of paint on the front door and some beautiful plants at the entryway can make all the difference. It's like rolling out the red carpet for potential buyers!

CLEAR THE CLUTTER

Consider hiring a professional cleaning service to really make your home sparkle. You want buyers to feel like they could move in tomorrow, so show them that your home is move-in ready!

UTILISE MIRRORS

Mirrors create a sense of depth and light, making rooms feel larger and brighter. Consider adding a statement mirror to your entryway or living room to make the space feel larger and more open.

DEFINE EACH SPACE

By creating distinct functional areas, you're showing buyers how they could use the space. Whether it's a cozy reading nook or a dining area perfect for hosting dinner parties, make sure each area serves a purpose.

HIGHLIGHT KEY FEATURES

Whether it's a fireplace, a jaw-dropping view, or a spacious backyard, draw attention to what makes your home unique. Do this with lighting, furniture placement, and highlighting unique architectural details.

DEPERSONALISE YOUR SPACE

Buyers want to envision themselves in your home, so it's important to remove any personal items, such as family photos or eclectic decor. Keep the focus on the space, not on the people who currently occupy it.

SEEK ADVICE

Don't be afraid to seek advice from your agent. They have a wealth of knowledge and can help you make informed decisions about how to stage your home. Think of them as your personal home-selling concierge!

Feature wall panelling is a design trend that adds depth and visual interest to any room. Take your ceilings to new heights

Ceiling features elevate an often overlooked space into an architectural focal point, drawing attention to a specific area of the room while adding height, depth and visual interest. A raked ceiling is often used in dining and living areas to add height and drama. This involves creating a sloped or angled ceiling to add grandeur and a sense of spaciousness to the room, and works well with a drop ceiling to the kitchen providing functional division to the space.

Maximise your space

When designing your home, it's essential to create a spacious and luxurious environment that maximises storage space. Here are some architectural features to consider adding, ensuring a beautiful and functional living space that meets all your needs.

STAIRCASE STORAGE

Make the most of every inch of space in your dream home by incorporating stylish under staircase storage. This discrete area is perfect for storing everyday necessities such as keys, bags, kids' toys, and even garage accessories if designed with garage access. Cupboards that close offer additional storage and create a neat and tidy entry, ensuring minimal clutter and maximum luxury.

STUDY NOOK

Get your work done in style with a study nook. A luxurious touch that's both functional and chic, a study nook creates a neat and inspiring space to work in, while offering clever storage solutions. Drawers under the desk provide a sleek and attractive spot to stash bills, chargers, and computers.

BGC Home 45

HIGH CEILINGS

High ceilings are a key consideration to maximise space and create a feeling of grandeur and expansiveness. Not only do they create a spacious and open feel, but they also allow for extra storage space by installing tall shelves and cabinets all the way to the ceiling. The larger windows offer a chance to frame a view and welcome natural light to flood the space, while the extra height accommodates feature lighting, like a chandelier, or larger artwork on the walls, creating a stunning visual impact.

LAUNDRY STORAGE

Make laundry day a breeze by maximizing space in your laundry room! Space saving storage solutions for detergent and fabric softeners, and custom designs like a dropdown iron cabinet, can add a touch of luxury to this often overlooked space.

Plus, by freeing up room in the laundry, you will create a sense of calm and order throughout the entire home.
BGC Home 47
ESKAY DESIGN BGC Home 48

Our top 5 design inclusions

Designing your dream home should be an exciting experience, but the endless options can become overwhelming. From clever storage features to innovative technology, Eskay Design is here to inspire and guide you on your journey with these top 5 must-haves.

MUDROOMS

Transform a small space in your home into a functional drop zone. Best built near the laundry, garage, or entrance, this space can be maximised with built-in cabinets and bag hooks. This spot can also double as a charging nook if you install extra power outlets and USB chargers. Finish with panelling to the rear wall to keep it looking pristine.

LAUNDRY HANGING RAILS

A hanging rail is a fantastic addition to any laundry room, providing a space to hang ironed clothes or dry and air them during colder months. Exposed hanging rails can create an interesting feature, while concealed rails offer a sleeker, minimalist look. Just remember to install your rail high enough so that hanging clothes don't brush against your benchtop!

TV WALL

Transform your living room with a built-in unit for your TV, complete with shelving and cupboards for extra storage. If you have the space, sliding panels are a great way of concealing your TV. Alternatively, an art TV that displays rolling images will seamlessly integrate your TV into your home's design.

FEATURE CLADDING

Revamp your walls with feature cladding! Choose from options like Easycraft, Laminex Surround, Polytec steccawood, and wainscoting. Paint it to match your walls for a subtle look or add a bold colour for a statement. For those with a creative flair, design a unique pattern and have it installed by a carpenter for a personal touch!

USE THAT ROOF SPACE

Storage is a common issue for households, especially with shrinking sheds and block sizes. One clever solution is to utilise the roof space! All you need is some solid flooring, sturdy shelves, a pull-down ladder, and a large opening to accommodate storage boxes.

Keep in mind that this is not a standard inclusion and should be considered during the house design stage to account for cost and roof height!

Design through the decades

Residential architecture continuously evolves, with each era defined by unique features and trends. From minimalism, simplicity, and functionality of the 60s to the neo-eclectic homes of the 2000s, let's take a deep dive into three decades of iconic design trends and materials that have shaped the way we decorate our homes today.

FEATURE BGC Home 50

1960s

The 1960s were a period of innovation and creativity as the post-war era opened new ways for people to modernise their homes. This led to a big shift in residential architecture, as architects embraced modernist design. Traditional design styles were left behind and new materials and styles made homes look fresh, futuristic and exciting.

MAIN DESIGN FEATURES

Architects favoured clean lines and flat roofs whilst embracing geometric shapes, often incorporating circular and triangular motifs. Bold colours were used to accent walls and furniture, and the use of asymmetry was popular, with buildings featuring off-centre entrances and window placements.

POPULAR FLOOR PLANS

The economic boom and cheaper building technology meant Australians could afford bigger homes with second bathrooms and additional bedrooms. Homes were designed with an L-shaped or U-shaped floor plan, separating bedrooms and bathrooms from living areas. Large picture windows let in plenty of natural light and sliding glass doors connected indoor and outdoor living spaces.

INNOVATIVE MATERIALS

Following 1950s brutalist architecture, common external building materials of the 60s included concrete blocks, brick, and metal. Interiors often featured wood panelling, wallpaper, and shag carpet, and new building materials like plastic paints, linoleum, and laminated kitchen benches made household cleaning even easier.

This era also introduced experimental building techniques including modular construction and prefabricated elements, facilitating more efficient construction.

BGC Home 51

The 1990s saw a shift towards individuality in residential design and welcomed the emergence of contemporary living.

BGC Home 52

1990s

The turn of the millennium was an exciting time full of bold new ideas and endless creativity. Known for mixing futuristic and functional elements, the 1990s saw a shift towards individuality in residential design and welcomed the emergence of contemporary living.

MAIN DESIGN FEATURES

The 1990s saw a shift towards experimentation and eclecticism, with designers mixing and matching pieces from different eras and cultures to create new styles. Advancements in digital design tools allowed architects to create more complex forms and shapes. Bold colours, unconventional materials, and unique architectural features such as curved walls and asymmetry were prevalent, reflecting the rise of postmodernism.

POPULAR FLOOR PLANS

Residential floor plans embraced open concept living spaces, integrating the kitchen, dining, and living areas. This design offered flexibility to reconfigure spaces based on the family’s changing needs. Homes were designed with luxurious master suites featuring spacious walk-in closets and ensuite bathrooms. Multi-level homes with split-level floor plans became popular, reflecting the emphasis on maximizing space for family activities.

INNOVATIVE MATERIALS

Traditional buildings such as warehouses, pubs, and churches were transformed into homes, and dual occupancy homes became common. Safer building materials like weatherboards, timber, and plywood panelling replaced harmful materials like asbestos, and the use of travertine and lime plastering became popular for a modern aesthetic.

2000s

The turn of the century saw the emergence of neo-eclectic residential designs, blending elements from diverse historical architectural styles like Colonial, Federation, and postmodernism. The focus was on fusion without conforming to any one style, allowing homeowners to create unique homes with meticulous attention to detail.

MAIN DESIGN FEATURES

Neo-eclectic style is a unique and stylish approach to modern residential design characterised by multi-storey designs, complex roof lines and larger garages. This style borrows recognisable traditional architectural elements like porches, dormers, columns, and gables that are more decorative than functional. High-end appliances and luxurious finishes make kitchens and bathrooms focal points. Sustainability is also important, with energyefficient materials and designs gaining popularity.

POPULAR FLOOR PLANS

This era's residential design focused on creating comfortable and inviting homes that encouraged socialisation and relaxation. Dining rooms lost their appeal as homeowners preferred informal spaces like kitchen islands and outdoor living spaces such as decks and porches. Technological advancements brought smart home systems and trendy features into the mix such as home theatres, feature walls, spa baths, and futuristic-looking furniture, balancing style, comfort and functionality.

INNOVATIVE MATERIALS

Residential design shifted towards using sleek materials such as glass, steel and concrete to create an open and airy feel in homes. Rendered brick walls became a popular choice for exterior finishes, while exposed brick served as a focal point. Additionally, timber, stone, and ceramics were highly regarded for their natural beauty, and aluminium building products gained popularity for their durability and flexibility.

Modern Australian Coastal Living

Australian coastal style has a unique charm that is often attributed to our laid-back and relaxed lifestyle, as well as the stunning natural beauty of our coastal regions. From our white sandy beaches to rocky outcrops and estuaries, our diverse coastline almost certainly plays a part in our home design. Let’s look at some of the key features of modern Australian Coastal Living.

CONNECT TO THE OUTDOORS

A smart floorplan will not only allow an abundance of natural light to fill your home, it should also seamlessly blend indoor and outdoor living spaces. Incorporate large bifold doors and windows in main living areas that capture expansive views and let in ample sunlight. Consider using window treatments that are light and sheer, allowing sunlight to filter through while maintaining privacy.

NATURAL MATERIALS

Expertly curated materials and artwork can create a captivating visual experience that perfectly embodies a coastal lifestyle and the warmth of family life. Incorporating materials such as bamboo, reclaimed wood, stone and natural fibers like rattan, wicker, or seagrass help create a calming coastal aesthetic.

MASTER RETREAT

Any coastal home needs a private master retreat, ideally nestled in a separate wing of the home. Maximise natural light with large windows and sheer curtains combined with a serene colour palette of sandy neutrals and soft greys. Select comfortable linen bedding, textured throws and juxtapose natural elements with a few sleek and modern accessories. If budget allows, create a resort like feel with an outdoor bathroom accessible through the bedroom.

Q&A Sarandy Karagiannis

Architect & Owner of Sarandis

Renowned for his award-winning home designs, Sarandy Karagiannis is an esteemed architect and design director at Sarandis Designs. Based in Perth, Western Australia, Sarandy has an impressive portfolio of projects, including some of Perth's finest display homes.

Sarandy's recent project was the design of his own family home, which has won several awards, including the National Winner for Small Lot Housing Design by the Building Designers Association of Australia in 2022.

In this interview, Sarandy opens up about his inspirations, favourite design elements of his award-winning home, and shares valuable advice for those embarking on their own homebuilding journey.

BGC Home 63

Tell us a little background about yourself and how you got into architecture and design.

My name is Sarandy Karagiannis and I'm the design director at Sarandis Design. From a young age, I was always fascinated by the art of design and how spaces interact with each other. As a result of this fascination, I have had the privilege of working on a wide variety of projects, each presenting its own distinct challenges and opportunities.

Where does your passion for art and design come from/where do you find your inspiration?

I find inspiration from a multitude of sources, but I am particularly drawn to the past. I enjoy examining the work of previous designers, observing how they tackled certain ideas and problems, and considering how we can improve upon their solutions with the benefit of hindsight.

What is your favourite element of this home?

Definitely the split levels. I love how each level defines a separate space. For example, the living area is on the lowest level which connects to the alfresco and the kid's beds are on their own level, away from the entertaining spaces.

What was the biggest challenge when designing this home?

The biggest challenge was definitely the site's natural characteristics.

Being both a narrow lot and having a 3.5m slope, from front to back.

BGC Home 64
BGC Home 65
"I was always fascinated by the art of design and how spaces interact with each other."

What is one piece of advice you would give to someone in the process of looking to build their own home?

Don't rush. Understand that there is a process and that the design phase is super important in the overall scheme of the project. Remember, it is a lot cheaper to move a wall on paper than it is on site.

What, in your opinion, does the future of architecture and design look like?

The future of architectural design will really need to consider solar passive design and sustainability. As designers we will need to consider where north is, where our windows are placed and where our living rooms are positioned so that we can achieve a good solar passive design.

How to maximise the value of your home

Your home's initial plans and inclusions can significantly impact its perceived value, affecting how much a bank will lend you to buy it. Maximise your home's value from the get-go with these top tips from Simon Kahl at The Loan Company.

WHAT IS THE ROLE OF A VALUER?

Valuers provide expert guidance to people buying, selling, or renting land and property. They estimate the market value of real estate to help their clients maximise their profits. Banks also consult valuers to assess a property's value and determine the loan amount they can offer clients.

HOUSE & LAND PACKAGES VS ESTABLISHED HOMES

Valuing a house and land package is different from an established home. With an established home, the valuer can visit the property, see how it looks, and compare it to other similar homes. But with a house and land package, they estimate what the value of the home would be once it's fully completed, which can be more uncertain. As a result, different lenders may offer different estimates of the future value of your home upon completion.

WHAT ARE STANDARD INCLUSIONS?

Standard inclusions are the basic features included in a build contract, such as floor coverings, window treatments, driveway, and taps and fittings. The valuation of your home can be greatly impacted by what is a standard inclusion and what is not.

BGC ensures that all standard inclusions are clearly outlined in your building contract.

TOP TIPS

• Choose larger bedrooms and living areas by sacrificing non-essential spaces such as a large laundry or other unused areas.

• Spend money where it counts, such as on the living room ceiling height and column-less sliding doors.

• Avoid costly upgrades to insignificant fixtures and fittings, such as taps, benchtops, and light fittings, without first ensuring you have the essential items such as floor coverings and window treatments.

• Create a seamless indoor/outdoor living space by connecting your living areas to the outdoors.

• Maximise natural sunlight by having northfacing windows to create a warm and bright living space.

FINDING YOUR STYLE

It’s important to refer back to your personal style when making selections for your exterior. Quality materials and finishes can also ensure durability and low maintenance, making the home stand out in a competitive market.

PICK YOUR FEATURE

When designing the exterior of your home, it is best to focus on one main feature, allowing it to stand out and tell a story. Whether it be a bright coloured entry door, timber wall cladding, or a skillion roof, there are plenty of options to pick from that reflect your personal style. Don’t be afraid to go all out on this design feature to elevate your curb appeal and give a taste of what's to come when you walk through the door.

LANDSCAPING

Choose hardy outdoor plants for a stunning burst of colour that not only improves air quality but also adds curb appeal with minimal upkeep. Large planters are great focal points and can be placed to block views from the street or enhance outdoor areas. Landscape design extends beyond greenery; innovative lighting and unique combinations of stepping stones or pavers also create visual impact and enhance the first impression of your home.

Design for the future

Building a sustainable home is not only important for the planet but can also save you money on energy bills. As an industry leader in energy efficiency, BGC Housing Group is aiming for every house we build to meet a minimum 7-star NatHERS rating. Here are our top tips for building a 7-star rated home and living more efficiently.

SOLAR ORIENTATION

Optimise the sun's path by aligning the house plan on the block to maximise solar and shade access. This reduces reliance on artificial lighting and heating, resulting in lower energy consumption and household costs.

FLOOR COVERINGS

Quality floor coverings not only look great but also improve your home's energy efficiency. Choosing sustainable flooring options like tile or concrete which have a high thermal mass can help regulate the temperature inside your home, reducing the need for heating or cooling.

WINDOW DESIGN

Optimise direct sunlight and natural ventilation by strategically placing and sizing your windows. Large north-facing windows allow sunlight during winter, while small east and west-facing windows limit harsh morning and afternoon sun. Consider using double-glazed or low-emissivity windows for further energy efficiency.

BGC Home 77

CEILING FANS

Reduce your energy bills and carbon footprint by using ceiling fans. In warmer months, ceiling fans are an energy-efficient way to cool your home and circulate air, reducing reliance on air conditioning. In colder months, they can help distribute warm air from the ceiling, reducing the need for excessive heating. Make sure to switch the direction of your fan to counterclockwise in summer to create a downdraft and clockwise in winter to create an updraft.

CAVITY INSULATION

Wall cavity insulation helps regulate the temperature of your home and prevent moisture. It helps maintain thermal resistance, which helps keep your home cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Choose environmentally friendly insulation materials to enhance the sustainability of your home.

CEILING INSULATION

Ensure adequate ceiling insulation to minimise heat loss in winter and heat gain in summer, reducing reliance on air conditioning and heating options. Choose sustainable insulation materials to contribute to the overall sustainability of your home.

Biophilic design meets courtyard living

Step into a world where modern home design and nature blend in perfect harmony. This is the essence of biophilic design, a concept that celebrates the seamless integration of natural beauty into our living space.

Scientific research has consistently shown that connecting with nature enhances our mood, productivity, and overall well-being. However, with our increasingly busy lives, finding the time to immerse ourselves in nature can be challenging. That's where biophilic design comes in. By embracing these design principles in our homes, we can enjoy the benefits of nature without ever stepping outside.

FEATURE
BGC Home 80

INDOOR PLANTS

One of the key elements of biophilic design is the incorporation of lush indoor plants. These green companions not only add a touch of natural beauty to our living spaces but also improve air quality by filtering out toxins and releasing oxygen. Indoor plants create a sense of tranquillity and serenity, helping us feel more connected to nature even when we're indoors.

INDOOR OUTDOOR LIVING

In addition to indoor plants, outdoor living areas play a vital role in biophilic design. By extending our living spaces to the outdoors, we create a seamless connection between the interior and exterior of our homes. This integration

allows us to enjoy the sights, sounds, and scents of nature, promoting a sense of well-being and relaxation. Whether it's a spacious patio, a cosy balcony, or a beautiful courtyard, these outdoor spaces become extensions of our living areas, providing a sanctuary where we can unwind and recharge.

NATURAL MATERIALS

Natural materials are another essential component of biophilic design. Incorporating materials such as wood, stone, and natural fibers brings a sense of warmth, texture, and organic beauty to our living spaces. These materials create a visual and tactile connection to the natural world, evoking a feeling of grounding and harmony. From

hardwood floors to stone countertops, each natural element contributes to the overall aesthetic and sensory experience of biophilic design.

By embracing biophilic design principles in our homes, we not only create visually stunning spaces but also enhance our overall well-being. So, step into a world where modern home design and nature blend in perfect harmony. Embrace biophilic design and create a living space that nourishes both your soul and your senses.

Chicken Saag with Warrigal Greens Kleenheat Kitchen PREP: 10 MINS | COOK: 21 MINS | SERVES 4 BGC Home 84

This dish comes from Western Australian chef, Caroline Taylor. Caroline likes to have fun with cooking, keeping it light-hearted, experimental and local.

INGREDIENTS

SAAG

500g free-range chicken thigh, cube dice 2cm square

300g warrigal greens or spinach

2 cloves garlic, minced about 1 tbsp

2 tbsp minced fresh ginger

1 large onion chopped

2 tbsp vegetable oil

1 ½ tsp ground coriander

1 ½ tsp garam masala

1 tsp turmeric

1 tsp ground cumin

½ tsp cardamom

¼ tsp chilli powder

1 tbsp tomato paste

½ cup water

½ cup plain yoghurt

RAITA

1 cup natural yoghurt

½ continental cucumber, deseeded +

finely diced

1 tsp lemon myrtle flakes

1 tsp sea salt

METHOD

1. Heat 1 tablespoon oil in a large non-stick frypan over a medium-high heat. Add the onion, garlic, and ginger and saute until softened, about 4 to 5 minutes, stirring regularly.

2. Over medium-low heat, add the salt, coriander, garam masala, turmeric, cumin, cardamom, and chilli powder, and stir until fragrant. Stir tomato paste into the spices in the pan, creating a thick spiced sauce, about 1 minute.

3. Add the spinach and water, and gently stir to combine as the frypan will be very full. Cover and raise the heat to medium-high, allowing the spinach to start to wilt. Occasionally remove the lid, stir, and then cover again until most of the spinach has begun to wilt, about 3 to 5 minutes. Remove the lid and finish stirring the spinach until it is completely wilted but still bright green, another minute.

4. Transfer spinach mixture to a blender and puree until smooth. Taste and adjust salt and spice if necessary.

5. Meanwhile, wipe the frypan clean with a paper towel, return it to medium-high heat, and add another tablespoon of oil. When the oil is hot, add the cubed chicken pieces, sprinkle salt over the top to season, and cook until almost completely cooked through, about 5 to 7 minutes.

6. Pour the spinach mixture back over the chicken, using a rubber spatula to get every last bit out of the blender, and cook for another 2 to 3 minutes to allow the flavours to meld and the chicken to finish cooking.

7. Make raita by mixing cucumber, lemon myrtle and sea salt in a bowl and set aside. You can make this ahead of time to get the full effect of the lemon myrtle.

8. Stir the yoghurt through the saag and serve immediately with basmati rice and/or naan bread and top with a dessert spoon of raita.

Creating a tree change

Want to bring the peace and tranquillity of nature into your dream home? Look no further than tree change design! Here are some tips for infusing the design trend into your interior.

NATURE INSPIRED

Incorporate the textures and tones of natural materials into your interior with affordable options like engineered flooring and laminate surfaces, which mimic the grain and texture of stone and wood with added durability.

Add touches of organic elements to your decor with wooden bowls, woven rugs and stone vases to tie in the overall aesthetic of your home.

LET THERE BE LIGHT

Create a bright, airy space with large windows, skylights, and bi-fold stacking doors. Use sheer curtains or timber-look venetians to let natural light flood into your home while maintaining your privacy. Mirrors are also an excellent way to reflect natural light and create an illusion of a larger space.

GOING GREEN

Embrace green accents in unexpected places. Green cabinetry in your kitchen or bathroom is an eye-catching way to breathe life into your space while keeping it classic. For a more subtle nod to nature, feature green tiles in your bathroom, splashback, or in smaller accessories. Opt for muted tones of olive or sage if you want a softer space. Alternatively, make a bold splash with a deep emerald.

FARMHOUSE FLAIR

Bring the charm of the countryside into your home by incorporating farmhouse style elements. You can achieve a cosy vibe by adding rustic touches such as Laminex Surround wall panels, a barn door and vintage furnishings. Don't be afraid to mix metals like brushed nickel and aged brass for an eclectic touch.

NEUTRAL CANVAS

Use earth tones and natural hues to create a calming and serene environment. Soft greens, warm beiges, and fresh whites are great for walls, floors, and larger furniture pieces. Pair these colours with soft lighting and plush furnishings for a space that is both cosy and sophisticated.

Glamour & Opulence

Art Deco was a popular design style that emerged in the 1920s and 1930s, a time of rapid social, economic, and cultural change. It was often characterised by a sense of glamour and opulence, with homes featuring luxurious materials, such as velvet, silk, and satin, as well as metals like gold, silver, and chrome.

One of the key features of Art Deco design was the emphasis on functionality and modernity. The style was often associated with the rise of industrialisation and new technologies, such as automobiles, airplanes, and radios. Bold Colours

Mid-Century Modern design emerged in the mid-20th century as a response to the post-World War II era. Characterised by simplicity, functionality, and a blend of clean lines and organic shapes, it created harmonious spaces that celebrated the beauty of natural materials. Influenced by Bauhaus principles, this iconic style seamlessly integrated indoor and outdoor areas, blurring boundaries and embracing innovation.

One of the defining features of Mid-Century Modern design is its emphasis on simplicity and minimalism. The clean lines and geometric forms of furniture and architecture, often characterised by tapered legs and sleek profiles, create an aesthetic of effortless elegance. Natural materials such as wood, particularly teak and walnut, were prominently used, juxtaposed with the use of bright and vibrant colour.

Overall, Mid-Century Modern design stands out for its timeless and iconic aesthetic, blending simplicity, functionality, and a deep appreciation for the beauty of natural materials. Its enduring popularity speaks to its ability to create spaces that are not only visually appealing but also harmonious and liveable, reflecting the aspirations and values of a transformative era.

Minimalist

Scandinavian design originated in the mid-20th century from the Nordic countries of Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, and Iceland. It is renowned for its minimalistic elegance, functional approach, and close connection to nature. Rooted in the principles of simplicity, craftsmanship, and practicality, this design style was heavily influenced by the Scandinavian climate and the need for warm, comfortable interiors.

This style often incorporates light colours, such as whites, greys, and pale pastels, to create a bright and airy atmosphere. Natural materials like wood, particularly light-coloured timbers such as birch and pine, play a significant role, bringing warmth and a sense of connection to nature.

Overall, Scandinavian design has had a profound influence on the world of design, inspiring countless contemporary interiors. By embracing light colours, natural materials, and a clutter-free aesthetic, anyone can bring the essence of Scandinavian design into their home, creating a serene and inviting space that celebrates both form and function.
