Careers, Employability and Enterprise Service

The BG Futures: Careers, Employability and Enterprise Team assist students throughout their time at university to research and plan their career and to improve their employability. We provide careers education, guidance and information via a number of services and activities. We also promote “being enterprising” as an attitude for life and also advise those looking to start their own business.

Hardy Building, open Monday – Friday The centre holds books, guides, factsheets and take away information on career related topics, including:• Options with your course of study. Take a look at this section if you are uncertain what to do after your course and need some ideas. • Job Sectors. This section includes information on job sectors, jobs within the sector, and courses. • Postgraduate study. This section has guides, alternative study information and funding information. • Jobshop. This section includes a variety of guides and books to assist you with job search and applications. • Enterprise. This section includes books and resources on business start-up/self-employment. Online Resources BLACKBOARD Our module on Blackboard has the following main sections with information, guides and resources: l

Advice and guidance ONE-TO-ONE ADVICE AND GUIDANCE The Careers Advisers offer professional advice to help students increase their self-awareness, and go on to make and implement decisions about their future careers. The Enterprise Development Manager is able to advise you on business start-up/self-employment. Careers education lectures and workshops BG Futures: Careers, Employability and Enterprise staff are invited into courses to deliver lectures and workshops on various career topics. Talks and workshops outside of lecture time are also run at various times throughout the year. Find out about these and other events via the Events section of our module on Blackboard. Find out more via the ‘Search and apply for a job’ section of our module on Blackboard. • Opportunities Boards Located outside the Student Resource Centre in Hardy, Student Union, Snug and Library These boards have up-to-date jobs, volunteering and postgraduate study opportunities. ADVICE AND GUIDES • Blackboard The ‘Search and apply for a job’ section on our module on Blackboard lists guides and information • Student Resource Centre The Jobshop section of the resource centre holds take away factsheets on searching and applying for a job, career guides and books such as on CV’s, interviews and applications. • CV and application help Your CV, job or further study application can be checked. You can also receive help to put together a CV.
ǁĂ ƌ ĚƐ Ă ŶĚ KƉƉŽƌ ƚ ƵŶŝ ƚ ŝ ĞƐ Employability Champions Our Employability Champions are current BGU students who promote, support and get involved with employability activities to help other students and themselves to be employable now and in the future. Activities they get involved with include supporting the Student Resource Centre, helping at events, signposting students to BG Futures staff and positively promoting employability across campus. We recruit and appoint Employability Champions early in the Autumn term. Employability award All first years are able to register to this award. The Employability Award helps and rewards you to actively improve your employability. The award helps you to understand the skills you have gained from employment, volunteering and other activities that you may have been involved with, both within and outside of university, explore your options and plan your career. It also encourages you to reflect on your experience, a vital skill for completing your CV or job application. You can gain a Pass, Merit or Distinction. Volunteering award There are many volunteering opportunities both on and off campus. The volunteering award highlights the opportunities available and you can earn Bronze, Silver and Gold and even platinum certificates. Mentoring If you feel you would benefit from having a mentor from business/education please let us know. Mentors can help with building confidence, introducing you to useful contacts and support with future planning.
