GREAT FUTURES START HERE.

MISSION To prepare young people, through enrichment opportunities and supportive relationships, to be responsible, caring and productive community members.

DEAR FRIENDS & SUPPORTERS, FOR 112 YEARS, BOYS & GIRLS CLUB OF GREENWICH has navigated

Cristina Vittoria Chief Executive Officer

times of triumph and trial to provide safe places for kids and teens. Last year was one of uncertainty due to the COVID-19 pandemic, where hundreds of our youth found themselves requiring additional support. With the help of a generous community and a dedicated staff, we learned to lean on one another during a time of crisis. We thank all of you for stepping up to meet the present needs of our kids and families so they can continue to work toward GREAT FUTURES.

Eileen Tang Chair, Board of Directors

You also showed us, as a community, what was important to you. Thanks to your support, Boys & Girls Clubs of Greenwich responded in myriad ways to help our members and their families navigate throughout a challenging year. We are proud of what we accomplished with your support. Some of these highlights include: · Opening a High School Remote Learning Center to serve the teen community that fol-

lowed a hybrid learning model. This structured setting allowed students to attend their virtual classes and complete their school assignments at the Clubhouse when their “team” was not on the Greenwich High School campus. · Offering a 10th week of Camp Simmons to the community when Greenwich Public Schools

delayed the opening of the 2020-2021 school year by a week. Throughout the summer, priority camp enrollment was given to Club members and children of essential workers. · Finding creative ways to continue offering BGCG signature events to our members and

the Greenwich community: Home Away From Home Annual Benefit, Thanksgiving Feast “To Go,” holiday gifts sent home, and an outdoor Youth of the Year Celebration. The impact of your generosity can be found in every statistic and photo contained in this report. Every homework assignment finished, every ball passed, every healthy snack eaten, and every smile made represents an unbreakable connection between our kids and the BGCG community that invests in their future. When we say “Great Futures Start Here,” we know all children have limitless potential and greatness inside them. It takes many stakeholders coming together to support them in reaching their full potential. Boys & Girls Club of Greenwich is proud to be a vital part of their journey, and we thank YOU for ensuring a bright future for the youth of Greenwich. With deepest gratitude,

Cristina Vittoria Eileen Tang Chief Executive Officer Chair, Board of Directors

WHEN SCHOOLS ARE OUT, OUR CLUB IS OPEN!

A DAY IN THE LIFE WHILE NO TWO DAYS ARE EVER THE SAME, today will be a full afternoon for Club members Rafael and Nicole. When the school bell rings at the end of the day, both members take the bus from school directly to the Clubhouse. While the Club’s programming offers a full array of activities to choose from, there’s always time to get homework done and spend time hanging out with friends. While these two youth may not realize it now, sometimes the route is just as important as the destination.

Lauren Herrera

A

s she sat at her desk every day at school, Lauren eagerly awaited the bell ringing and heading to the Club. While becoming involved in Club programs, Lauren discovered a hunger to learn new things. In Lauren’s words, “I joined the knitting club and then began taking classes for guitar, Italian, soccer, swimming, photography, creative writing, and everything artrelated. Little did I know that after sitting in the audience for the performance of ‘Annie Junior,’ I’d find my passion for performance.” A daily Club participant, Lauren’s life changed the summer before she entered eighth grade when she was diagnosed with a cancerous tumor above her spine. Having to relocate to Massachusetts General Hospital, Lauren’s life shifted to one of test tubes and treatments. “Staff and friends from the Club sent me letters of support and recovery, and even went as far as fundraising for my treatments,” recalls Lauren. “Four years after my radiation treatment, I returned to the Club as a Keystone member, and remain grateful for the support I received while in Massachusetts.”

urrently the Assistant Wrestling Coach at Millersville University in Pennsylvania, BGCG alumnus Ryan Cruz-Whittle began his wrestling career at Central Middle School and later joined the wrestling club at Greenwich High School. He credits his years from 6th through 12th grade at Boys & Girls Club of Greenwich as the spark for his career path in education. Being a counselor-in-training at Clubhouse Camp was how Ryan discovered his natural aptitude for working with youth. “I know it’s cliche, but I learned about leadership and service at the Boys & Girls Club, and I apply it daily. I work with kids now and I can only hope I am making positive lifelong impacts the same way my Boys & Girls Club mentors did for me,” said Ryan. Giving advice to today’s Club kids, Ryan states, “Recognize those around you who have extended a helping hand and be sure to thank those people for their time and services.”

Summer Brain Gain

D

uring the 2020-2021 school year, students faced increased learning loss and isolation, making access to summer camps more important than ever, state program leaders said.

Painting

During a normal year, disadvantaged children often experience “summer slide,” or several months of learning loss over the break, said Michelle Doucette Cunningham, Executive Director of the Connecticut After School Network, a statewide non-profit focused on expanding access to quality summer and after school programs. “When others might be building their skills over the summer months, some of these students lose two months of math skills, or two to three months of reading in a regular summer,” she said. “We know that when kids aren’t engaged, they’re not building those skills, and this year we’ve had even less engagement than ever.”

Canoeing

Baseball

That’s where Summer Brain Gain comes in. Following a year of non-traditional instruction, addressing the “summer slide” learning gap by increasing Summer Brain Gain activities became more important than ever. Summer Brain Gain is comprised of one-week modules with fun, themed activities. Through a project-based learning approach, youth engaged in a process of learning through discovery, creative expression, group work, and a final project or production. As a result, kids developed higher-order thinking skills through the Summer Brain Gain modules while staying on track for the coming school year. 14 | BOYS & GIRLS CLUB OF GREENWICH

DONOVAN MITCHELL VISIT

Described as one of the most exciting and electric players to watch in the NBA, Donovan Mitchell made a surprise appearance at Boys & Girls Club of Greenwich, talking to a small group of BGCG high school basketball players, and Torch and Keystone members. A player for the Utah Jazz, Mitchell spoke to the members about the importance of education, hard work, and listening to your elders. “You look at guys who make it to the NBA and become professional athletes, the only thing that will stay with you is education,” Mitchell said. “Education is huge. Listening to your teachers is huge.” In 2019, Mitchell founded SPIDACARES, after his nickname, Spida. The nonprofit foundation helps to promote physical well-being and mental health, ethical character, confidence and good sportsmanship of children and adults through amateur athletic programs. It also assists communities in need by making athletic equipment and instruction available for young people, and also provides grants and scholarships to deserving students with financial need.

THANKSGIVING FEAST

For the Club’s 18th Annual Thanksgiving Feast, the holiday was celebrated with dinners to enjoy at home. Each family received a full dinner consisting of turkey, gravy, cornbread, side dishes, two holiday pies, and sparkling apple juice. As in years past, dinners were distributed by community leaders and Club Board Members. This highly anticipated event was generously provided by individuals from the Greenwich community and the Acme store in Greenwich.

HOLIDAYS

Our members were so thankful for all of the support of our BGCG community during the holiday season. From grocery store gift cards, to holiday wreaths, cornucopia gift bags, giant Santa sleep sacks, and so much more, the holidays were made bright. Thank you to everyone who donated items and gave their time to grant the holiday wishes of our members, especially Greenwich Garden Club, the Carino family, and Stone Point Capital. 22 | BOYS & GIRLS CLUB OF GREENWICH

YOUTH OF THE YEAR Some of Greenwich’s best and brightest were celebrated on April 7, during the Boys & Girls Club of Greenwich’s Annual Youth of the Year celebration. Damarys Aceituno, a junior at Greenwich High School, was named the Club’s 2021 Youth of the Year. Lauren Herrera (Greenwich High School senior) and Karen Maldonado (Greenwich High School junior) were finalists for the 2021 award. “Through the interview process here’s what I learned about the finalists - each of them are smart, super smart, and have overcome incredible personal challenges with grace,” said Icy Frantz. “Each one has been positively impacted by their tenure at the Boys & Girls Club.” In addition to naming the Youth of the Year winner, Lisa Stuart was honored as the 2021 Champion of Youth. A huge thank you to our 2021 Youth of the Year Co-Chairs: Lisa and Bruce Quackenbush, and Icy and Scott Frantz and title sponsors: Brescome Barton, Skye and Bill Brewer, Roberta and Steven Denning, Icy and Scott Frantz, Marie-France and Rene Kern, Susan and Stephen Mandel, Jr., RBC Capital Markets, Lisa and Scott Stuart, and The Wolverine Foundation.

TASTY TUESDAYS

26 | BOYS & GIRLS CLUB OF GREENWICH

On five Tuesdays throughout the spring, ten local restaurants supported Boys & Girls Club of Greenwich in an initiative called, “Tasty Tuesdays.” Members of the Greenwich community were asked to support one of the 10 local restaurants, who then in turn made a donation to the Club. Run by BGCG’s Torch Club, the fundraiser brought in enough donations to fund two access mats at Byram Park, as well as a host of recreational supplies for local senior facilities. Many thanks to the local community and restaurants who supported the Club: Cobber North, Corbo’s, Famous Greek Kitchen, Firehouse Deli, Garden Catering, Grigg Street Pizza, Joey B’s, OG Social Club, Old Greenwich Deli, and Sam’s Bar & Grill.
