IN THEIR OWN WORDS

REPORT 2022
ANNUAL

OUR MISSION

To prepare young people, through enrichment opportunities and supportive relationships, to be responsible, caring and productive community members.

OUR VISION

Where youth go to find their greatness.

HOW DOES THE CLUB MAKE A DIFFERENCE?

Dear Friends,

We are often asked, “How does the Club make a difference?” Youth and teens in our community face headwinds on their journey toward growing into healthy, successful adults with a solid foundation of character. For example, during the past two years of the pandemic, academic achievement has significantly declined, while social and emotional concerns have been on a steep incline.

Boys & Girls Club of Greenwich is a game changer for over 1,800 youth and teens by providing quality programs to young people ages six to 18 who come from a wide variety of backgrounds, a population reflective of Greenwich today and most certainly our future. We offer access to resources such as caring mentors, homework support, athletic leagues, art programs, college visits, first jobs, summer camps for youth and teens, and more. This access, coupled with a safe community space — 97% of BGCG members say they feel safe at the Club — is transformative.

In a time of mounting barriers to educational achievement and emotional wellness, our Core Operating Values serve as a foundation to elevate our youth and let them know they are capable, worthy, and respected members of society. These values are the standard around which our programs are developed and our staff is trained.

Inclusion: We strive to ensure that all members feel a sense of connection and belonging.

Respect: We believe it is essential for everyone who interacts with the Club to be treated — and treat others — with respect and dignity.

Safety: We place the highest priority on creating a physically and emotionally safe environment for our members and staff.

Accountability: We are committed to maintaining the highest professional standards in all our endeavors.

Teamwork: We believe our best results come from working together.

In this report, we highlight the impact of our work, including words of recognition and thanks from our families (page 2), the reasons why youth need the Club (page 4), our proven formula for impact (page 6), a summer of enriching camp programming (page 12), and a year of special events.

Our work is made possible by a broad community of supporters, including our dedicated Board of Directors, professional staff, host of volunteers, and body of donors. We collaborate with education, nonprofit, corporate, and foundation leaders as well as individuals to advance our mission. Your continued partnership fuels our unwavering commitment to supporting every child who needs us.

Many of us were helped along our journey by supportive adults in nurturing environments that encouraged us to be responsible, caring, and productive community members. Your support is essential in helping to ensure today’s youth continue to have access to all the opportunities our Club provides. Thank you for your generous support of our youth.

With deepest gratitude,

Dear Don and Counselors, Camp Simmons is the best! Thank you for having us. We had so much fun! I am looking forward to going to Camp Simmons next year!

IN THEIR OWN WORDS

Dear Cristina, Thank you so much for putting kids like me through to reach community leaders and mentors through the Scholarship Program

Not only that you were eager to check in with me and to try to ease other life stresses I had during the school year, your work has helped ease the stresses of low-income families like mine, and make our dreams a tangible reality. From myself and my whole family, thank you and we hope you continue to do good work for families in need.

2 BOYS & GIRLS CLUB OF GREENWICH

Dear Don,

The Boys & Girls Club has been a special place for our family. Swimming lessons have been perfect –best thing we could have done. Thank you for the great programming at the Club. The Boys & Girls Club is the best and your staff is wonderful. The kids love the Club!

Love, The Schacter Family

Dear Scholarship Committee,

I want to express how thankful and appreciative my family and I are to the Scholarship Committee and Greenwich Boys & Girls Club in its entirety. The generosity shown to me by this organization has not only allowed me to pursue a college degree but has lifted a tremendous burden off my family. I promise to finish my college education as strong as possible, and continue with the tradition of helping and giving back instilled in me by this organization.

Thank you for simply believing in me, Nicholas

Dear Cristina,

Thank you so much for loaning your staff to us and helping us get through a very difficult time. It is so reassuring to have partners willing and able to step up and help at a moment’s notice.

Thank you!

The Transportation Association of Greenwich Staff

Dear Deelia,

Where do I even begin? I was given more than just a job when I was hired. I was blessed with a support system and I was given a sense of belonging when I felt like I didn’t fit in with my peers. Seeing the kids each day made my semester off and summer so much brighter. Working at the Club gave me a sense of purpose that I so desperately needed this year. You gave me a safe and happy home and I cannot thank you enough.

Xoxo, Julia

CAMP BY THE NUMBERS

SUMMER CAMPS

Boys & Girls Club of Greenwich campers, ages 6 15, saw a welcome return to typical camp programming after two years altered by COVID 19. With key protocols still in place to ensure the health and safety of campers and staff, everyone was excited to enjoy all the outdoor and indoor activities traditionally offered at camp. Clubhouse Camp, Camp Simmons and Teen Camp sold out this year, and smiles were a testament to the all the fun!

Clubhouse Camp Camp Simmons Teen Camp

Summer Brain Gain Educational Enrichment

In addition to daily camp activities, BGCG offered Summer Brain Gain, a Boys & Girls Club of America evidence-based program, comprised of oneweek modules that uses a project-based learning approach designed to reduce the summer learning slide.

Fun weekly themes mitigated summer learning loss for early elementary and middle school students. The learning modules are Common Core aligned with an emphasis on math, literacy, and 21st century skills. All the modules have fun activities like designing an ocean in a jar, investigating volcanoes, and working on a community service project.

Mental Health Support Services

In conjunction with partner, Kids In Crisis, Boys & Girls Club of Greenwich delivered a KidTalk counseling program 10 hours a week at each camp location. As during the school year, an on-site licensed social worker provided confidential individual mental wellness counseling to kids and families in need of support.

BGCG HIGHLIGHTS 2021/22

DECEMBER 2021

Holidays

“The gift is in the giving” is what BGCG youth learned when they chose gifts to give to their loved ones at the annual holiday party. A shopping boutique was created by a generous group of volunteers, followed by a room full of holiday wreaths, treats, crafts, cards, and camaraderie. Thank you to everyone who donated items and gave their time to grant the holiday wishes of our members, especially Jannell Bakrow, Susan Bevan, Dede Brooks, Pat Caffray, Jocelyne DeNunzio, Ramsey Frank, Katie Gormly, Anne Harrison, Jean-Marie Jamieson, Gail Khosla, Sally Lawrence, Tia Mahaffy, Kathy Markby, Lindsay Ormsby, Emma Pennington, Maris Pascal, Mario Ponce, Annette Wilson, and the Carino family.

DECEMBER 4, 2021

Pancake Breakfast

A few hundred Club kids and community members joined Santa for copious stacks of pancakes and shared their wish lists with Old Saint Nick. The sold-out Saturday morning event offered two seatings while Board Members kept the griddles hot and the pancakes and sausage coming all morning to feed the hungry crowd. A special thank you to our sponsors: Summer Rain, Upper Crust Bagel, Stop & Shop, Rite Aid Foundation, and the Jarombek Family.

NOVEMBER 23, 2021

Thanksgiving Feast

Nearly 300 boys and girls feasted at this special 19th annual event that brought together Club members, staff, board, volunteers, and community members to create a special experience for all. Dinner was served by community leaders and Club Board Members. This much anticipated gathering was generously provided by the Creamer, Hilton, and Quackenbush families, Acme Foundation, Morgan Stanley Foundation, and Stew Leonard’s. A huge thank you to Courtnay Arpano from Courtnay’s Kitchen for her culinary mastery.

FEBRUARY 26, 2022

Swim-a-Thon

Hosted by the Barracudas Swim Team, the 17th Annual Swim-A-Thon filled the pool with enthusiastic swimmers. Funds support: Swim Lessons, Barracuda Swim Team Membership, Jr. Barracuda Swim Team Membership, Lifeguard Certification and more. Funds raised also help cover the cost of the Club’s aquatic programs.

23 ANNUAL REPORT 2022

APRIL 6, 2022 Youth of the Year

Paige Pray, a senior at Greenwich High School, was named the Club’s 2022 Youth of the Year, along with Central Middle School eighth grader Ryder King as Jr. Youth of the Year, and Don Palmer, the Club’s VP of Programs and Youth Development as the Champion of Youth.

Pray, along with Katie Coyle, Sofia Devito, Isaac Dumeny, Serena Fakhoury, Ava Galley, Raquel Garcia, Jonathan Maldonado, Saskia Phillips, Jesse Sanchez, Starla Tejada, and Ashley Torres-Brown, were the finalists for the 2022 award. Event co-chairs Sally and Larry Lawrence, Sally and Alex Lynch, and Jean and Rick Witmer were among the panelists who chose Pray as the winner.

Greenwich’s Youth of the Year program was established in 1969 to recognize club members who give back to their club and community. Likewise, the Champion of Youth award is the highest honor a Boys & Girls Club of Greenwich supporter can achieve. The recipient is recognized as making a significant contribution of time and talent to the members and mission of the Club.

The community recognized that for 30 years, Don Palmer has been instrumental in helping thousands of children grow and reach their full potential through honesty, hard work and sportsmanship.

Boys & Girls Club of Greenwich is a member agency of the Greenwich United Way

“Once a Club kid, always a Club kid” is more than a catchy slogan for Boys & Girls Club of Greenwich. For many, the bond Club members make during their youth remains for life. On June 18 a group of Club alumni ranging from the 1950s through last year gathered to reunite, eat, and reminisce. Club alumni also toured the Clubhouse, which many had not seen since their teens, and talked fondly about their summer days at Camp Simmons.

“Rebecca was an incredible friend to our staff, a mentor to our kids, and a stalwart of our mission. She will be deeply missed, and we will be forever grateful for the impact that she has had on our Club,” said Cristina Vittoria, CEO of Boys & Girls Club of Greenwich.

A longtime member of the Board of Directors, and our 2019 Champion of Youth, Rebecca’s legacy will live on through the many teens who have received, and will receive, college scholarships through the Rebecca S. Breed Scholarship Fund. Even though she is no longer with us, Rebecca will continue to have a great impact on our organization and community.
