T Brendan’s Sixth Form College achieved an increase in pass rates this summer. The biggest provider of A-levels in the region saw 1,452 students sitting exams, and a pass rate of 96.9 percent – a 0.5 percent increase from last year. More than 65 percent of students achieved A* to C grades. Nancy Williams got two As in Biology and History, and an A* in Maths. She is heading to Cambridge University in October to study History. Nancy previously attended The Ridings’ Federation in Winterbourne. She said: “I didn’t think I had made it to Cambridge, I wasn’t confident at all. “It doesn’t feel real yet but I’m so excited. The interview process for Cambridge was terrifying and I thought it had gone disastrously too, but the people I met were lovely. I’m looking forward to getting ready to go now.” Katarzyna Rozycka was also among the college’s star students. Her commitment paid dividends as she achieved three A* grades in Biology, Chemistry and Maths, and two A grades in Physics and Polish. Katarzyna, a former student of St Gregory’s, is planning to spend the next year gaining medical experience before going on to study medicine at university. Principal Michael Jaffrain said: “These results, together with the 100 percent achievement in the International Baccalaureate and the Extended Project Qualification, and the 98.6 percent of BTEC passes, are excellent. “We have been working very hard at ensuring that we have a range of courses and subjects which stretch and challenge students, whatever their aspirations for the future.” CORNELL Shannon: EL CORNOCK Christine: EL&ELIT HI,PZ COVILL Eloise: MM,PZ COX Abigail GG,PZ,DE,BI COX Adam: AB,EC,ES,GG COX David: COMS COX Jamie: CH,MA,HI,BI COX Jenna: HS CRADICK Milo: BI,CH,AR CRAIG Alisha: BS,EL&ELIT,MM CRANE Molly: PG,DTTE CRAYTHORNE Katie: LW,HI,EL, MA CREBER Harrison: BS CRISCIONE Rossella: BI,MA,PH,PZ CROASDELL Alexander: DT CROCKER Rebecca: PH,MF,MF CROKER Molly: BI,PZ,SO CROSS Michael: HI,PZ CROUCHER Jessica: COMS CUBIE Josie: PZ,BI,EL CULLEN Kurtis: COMS,FS,MM CUMMINS Alistair: PH,CH,MA CUMMINS Caitlin: PLB CUMMINS Lawrence: BS,BI,CH CURNOCK Matthew: BS,EL CURRY Thomas: CP,MA,ICT CURTIS Connor: LW,PZ,GG CUSENS Oliver: PH,CH,MA,DE DABIAK Roza: PG,POL,DTGR DACHRAOUI Sami: MM,COMS,EL DAHIR Sahra: HS,LW DAHNOUN Yasmin: CW,E ,HI,SO DALY Lauren: AR,EL&ELIT,BI,CW DANIEL Aaron: DTGR,MM,PLB,PZ DANVERS Callan: EL,PZ,BI,BS DARBOE Sainabou: ICT DARK Phoebe: AR DARLISON Robyn: PG,PZ,BI DAVEY Jack: DTGR,MM,PG DAVEY Jessica: AB,HI,PZ DAVID Thomas: PS,HI,MA DAVIDGE Marnie: PG,FS DAVIES Adam: PLB,SO,MA,MU

TUDENTS at South Gloucestershire and Stroud College’s Filton Campus celebrated results which saw many A-level students gain places at Bristol University and

UWE. Course leader for psychology Mark Jones said many of his pupils had done exceptionally well. He said: “It’s always a nerve-wracking day for students, and as a teacher it’s a day of mixed emotions. “A lot of my students have done very well. There are always a few who are disappointed, but I know they have all worked exceptionally hard.” One student who was not disappointed

was 18-year-old Sarah Leighton-Carey, who achieved two Bs in sociology and law and a distinction star in science to gain her a place to study sociology at Bristol University. She said: “I’m still in a bit of shock. I can’t really believe it. I didn’t sleep well at all last night as I was so nervous, but I’m feeling really relieved now.” Also off to Bristol University is 21-year-old Emilia Inskip, who went back to college after taking some time out to work to pursue her dream of becoming an English teacher. She achieved a B in media and a C in English language. She said: “I feel really proud of myself.”

Bristol Cathedral Choir School

STRONG A-level and AS-level performances at Bristol Cathedral Choir School included 13 sixth-formers with a sweep of top grades. Overall, 69 per cent of A-levels taken at the school this year gained A* to C grades, with particularly strong performances in music, English, mathematics, religious studies and art. Principal Neil Blundell said: “My congratulations go to our

Year 13 leavers for some very good individual results achieved in the face of disruptive national changes to the examination system. “The vast majority have secured places at their chosen university. These 54 students were the last group to enter the school before it became an academy in 2008, so in many ways it is the end of an era – for the school as well as for them.” Among the school’s high-flyers

at A-level were Sarah Serridge, with an A* and two As, and Charlie Boxall, with two A*s and an A grade. Izzy Craner, of Downend, was both surprised and delighted to achieve her A*, A and B, which exceeded the requirements to secure her place to study biochemistry with medical biochemistry at Bristol University. She said: “I was ill during my exams and on two lots of antibiotics, steroids and sleeping pills

– I am so happy with these results.” Holly Morgan-Davies, of Southville, achieved two As and a B – exactly what she needed for her place to read ancient and medieval history at Cardiff. She joined the BCCS sixth form from Ashton Park School. She said: “Everyone was very welcoming here and I got the place on the university course I wanted, so it was the right decision for me.”

Bristol Grammar School

M

ORE than a quarter of A-level results at Bristol Grammar School were graded A*, marking a record year for the school.Among them were 19 students who earned straight A*s in either three or four subjects whilst 64 students achieved at least 3 As or better. The results run contrary to commentators’ predictions that the national trend of year-on-year increases in those achieving the best grades was at an end. Performance in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) subjects was particularly strong and was well ahead of the school average overall. Some 75 per cent of the year group, and 65 per cent of female students, took at least one STEM subject, and 36 per cent of the grades were A*. The school’s headmaster Roderick MacKinnon, said: “I’m pleased for the students and proud of the school. “These results are the product of a winning combination between the students’ natural talent and hard work and the outstanding commitment of the teachers and families who have supported them. It’s been a real team effort. They also prove for us that the national decision to scrap January modules was the right one as it has given our students the time and space to really focus on their core studies without the distraction of unnecessary additional assessment part way through the year.”

TUDENTS and staff celebrated positive A-level results at Abbeywood Community School and Bradley Stoke Community School, with more students than ever gaining grades to be accepted onto university courses. Abbeywood witnessed a slight dip in headline figures compared with previous years, in line with what is being reported nationally, but has seen huge successes in BTEC and vocational results. All students who were seeking places on higher education courses gained places and a number of others secured apprenticeships with prestigious organisations. The average points score per entry was 187 and average total points score

Clifton High School

C

LIFTON High School announced its first set of A-level results for pupils who have been educated since the school became fully co-educational and introduced the pioneering Diamond Model of education in 2009. The school said the results had been worth the wait, with 26 per cent of students achieved all A* or A grades and 80 per cent of grades achieved were at B or above Across all students, 58 per cent of grades were better than predicted on entry into sixth form, which the school says demonstrates the quality of teaching and high levels of support they have received. An impressive 80 per cent of students will go onto Russell Group universities. Alison Neill, head of school, said: “Thursday was an extremely important day for Clifton High School. The young men and women, their parents, our staff and our governors have shown trust and loyalty to CHS on our journey over the last six years. “The results are testament to the hard work determination and vision of us all. “Not only have our students achieved an outstanding set of qualifications but through our unique approach to co-education have had learning and social experiences which give them distinct advantages as they move into universities and eventually into the broader world of work where males and females interact and engage daily”. The Diamond Model educates boys and girls either together or separately using a unique formula depending on their age and the subject.

● Molly Scull, from Winscombe TWO students from Sidcot School achieved the grades they needed to go to Oxford University. Molly Scull from Winscombe and international student Youren Yu will be studying German and mathematics at St Hilda’s College and Corpus Christi College respectively. Molly who gained A*AA is delighted to have secured her place at Oxford. The 18-year-old, who has been a student at the Quaker school for four years, said: “If you want to do well at Sidcot you can. Teachers are definitely committed and always willing to give help outside of lessons, but it isn’t overly stressful – I put pressure on myself because I enjoy my subject and want to do it at the highest level possible.”

Sidcot students again significantly exceeded the national average for A-level results with 81 per cent of grades awarded between A* to C and 20 per cent of students gaining at least three A-levels all at grade A or above. The overall pass rate was 98.6 per cent. Headmaster Iain Kilpatrick said: “I am delighted with our results which are testimony to the hard work and diligence of our students, combined with the commitment of teachers and support of parents. “However, every bit as important as the grades that allow them to do so, are the values, developed during their time at school, that will support them in the choices they make and in achieving the goals they set themselves.”

T was another successful set of A-level results for the 2014 cohort from Badminton School. The girls secured places on a diverse range of courses from medicine to music at a world class set of institutions such as Cambridge, Russell group universities and music conservatoires in the UK, as well as top universities in Canada, Thailand and the US. The school said the results were the culmination of a fantastic school career for a group of students who have always thrown themselves wholeheartedly into every aspect of school life. The school added that the students’ involvement in the academic, sporting, musical, dramatic and volunteering aspects of community life were enormous and they would leave a challenge for future years to follow in their footsteps. The school’s headmistress, Rebecca Tear, said “I am delighted by this year’s set of results, but more importantly I am proud of each girl at an individual and personal level.”

Clifton College ALMOST three in every four students at Clifton College were accepted at their first choice university after receiving excellent A-level results. An impressive 77 per cent of pupils gained A* to B grades in their subjects, with 50 per cent gaining an A* or A. Popular destinations this year include Edinburgh, Exeter, Durham, Warwick, Sheffield, LSE, UCL, King’s London and Warwick. Mark Moore, head master at the college, said: “Many congratulations to our A-level pupils on their excellent results. “Nearly three-quarters of the upper sixth have received confirmation of a place at their first choice of university. “This is a remarkable achievement: well done.”

IXTH form students at the Red Maids’ School were flying the flag for girls wanting to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) with their results. This year they have won places to study a range of subjects still often considered to be male-dominated, including physics, mathematics, chemistry, biochemistry, engineering, medicine and veterinary medicine. Isabel Tobias, headmistress of the senior school, said: “It’s been another very successful year where the majority of our students have secured places at their first choice university. “A significant proportion of our students will be moving on to study STEM subjects and this should make Red Maids’ stand out as a school that can help girls succeed in the widest possible range of subjects.” The school recorded a 100 per cent pass rate in its A-levels for the 10th year in a row. More than half of all A-level entries – 52 per cent – were graded A* or A and 79 per cent were graded A*, A or B.

ACKWELL School will be waving off some of its students to study at the prestigious universities of Cambridge and Oxford. This year the school saw 73 per cent of students gain A-levels at grades A* to C and an overall pass rate for grades A* to E of 97 per cent. A total of 26 per cent of students got all A* and A grades. One of the top performers was 18-year-old Rebecca Abbot who gained four A* grades and will be heading to Cambridge to read mathematics. Another Oxbridge high-flyer was deputy head girl Emma Harper, 18, who is also going to Cambridge to read geography. Head teacher, Julian Baldwin, said: “We

are really pleased that our results have remained so high in the face of the changes to marking and modular examinations this year. “Our students deserve their success – they’re worked hard and contributed so much to school life and beyond over the years. “It is lovely that so much effort and commitment, as well as ability, has gained the recognition they deserved.” Rebecca and Emma were not the only stars of the show at Backwell. No fewer than 21 students achieved three A*-A grades, with head boy Rob Gall, head girl Anna Jones, Arun Patel, Sam Purie and Joe Fear all getting two of the highest A* grades.

T Wellsway School in Keynsham, 31 per cent of all A-levels taken were graded either A or A*. Some 63 per cent of exams were given A* to B grades, 82 per cent were at A* to C and there was a 100 per cent overall pass rate. The school’s head teacher Andrea Arlidge said: “These are a fantastic set of results that we are very proud of. “It was a delight on results day to see so many happy, excited faces and to know that the overwhelming majority of students got into the university place of their choice. “These results are a testament to the hard work of the students and staff and to the fantastic support given by parents”. In a crowded field there were many notable A-level successes. In further maths, an amazing 86 per cent of entries were graded as A* or A, with 47 per cent of maths entries graded the same. Twelve students achieved all A or A* grades in all subjects, gaining places to study

on an eclectic range of courses including veterinary science, medicine, theoretical physics, architecture, biomedical sciences, business management, pharmacy, geography, physics and mathematics at Oxbridge and Russell

Group universities. The school’s AS results were equally impressive. AS further maths and maths students again excelled with 56 per cent and 37 per cent respectively of all entries gaining an A grade.

HERE was an abundance of individual success stories at St Mary Redcliffe and Temple School, as the sixth-form recorded a 98 per cent pass rate with more than half of grades A* to B. One student at the school who led an anti-homophobia campaign while taking his A-levels landed a place at King’s College in London. Travis Alabanza-Behard, 18, from Fishponds, jointly won the Diana Anti-Bullying Award for his work with the EACH charity in Bristol, South Gloucestershire and North Somerset fighting homophobia, sexism and cyber bullying. Travis, who got an A* and two As, said: “It’s been a busy year. I was surprised by my results.” Travis’s desire to tackle homophobia was partly prompted by abuse he himself had received. He said: “I’ve been lucky compared to a lot of people but when you are walking around being black and gay you will experience things others haven’t. Russell Group universities don’t have a high number of black pupils, especially King’s, so getting in there is important to me.” A fellow student went the extra mile with his A-levels – literally. Thomas Wilding, 18, commuted to school every day from Chepstow. He earned two A*s and two As. He said: “Commuting in was exhausting – it’s a long day, getting up to leave at 7am and not getting back at home until 7pm most evenings.” The school’s head teacher, Elisabeth Gilpin, said: “I am absolutely delighted with the success of our students. “We are pleased that so many students are choosing to go to university, and that we have lots of girls getting great grades in science, technology and maths.”

-LEVEL results at The Castle School in Thornbury went from strength to strength this year, despite media predictions of national fluctuations. With almost 500 A-levels sat, the school is one of the biggest sixth forms in the Bristol area. This summer, 60 per cent of all the A-levels entered obtained a grade of A* to B – an increase on 2013. Some 24 students achieved at least three A grades, or equivalents, with star performances from Gianlucca Cerullo and Luke Williams. Gianlucca and Luke got a full set of A* grades at A-level, having each obtained 11 A* grades at GCSE two years ago. Gianlucca will study zoology at Sheffield University, while Luke will be going to Exeter University to study physics and astrophysics.

We also encourage you to visit our school during the working day, when we will be happy to give you a personal tour by appointment. You will be shown around the school by students, and will have the opportunity to speak personally with a member of the school Leadership Team. Please call for more information.

The school’s headteacher, Peter Smart, said: “I am thrilled with these superb results once again, which are a tribute to the hard work of our excellent students and the quality of the teaching they receive in our school. “With nearly 200 students completing their A-levels in our sixth form this year – even more than last year – the maintenance of such high standards is not just a ‘flash in the pan’. “It reflects a consistency and quality in the teaching and all the support provided to students here. “We continue to see many students going off to begin exciting degree courses at university, as well as increasing numbers going into high-status apprenticeships, something we are working hard to support through our links with local employers.”

Cabot Learning Federation

T

HE Cabot Learning Federation saw continued improvement in its post 16 results. The federation’s post 16 provision, which serves students from John Cabot, Bristol Brunel, Bristol Metropolitan and King’s Oak academies, is celebrating another year of strong and improved results. Students from Bristol Brunel Academy have seen 100 per cent of its Year 13 students achieving passes at A2, with 24 per cent of students achieving A* and A grades and 95 per cent achieving A* to D. The academy’s vice principal, Jon Jones, said: “These results represent the outstanding work from students and teachers in achieving the best results the academy has ever achieved. More importantly, the results students have

achieved here will unlock their pathways to successful futures; we are very proud of all of the students.” The results achieved at King’s Oak Academy and John Cabot Academy were once again strong, with a larger proportion of students moving onto Oxbridge and Russell Group universities than in previous years. At John Cabot, 90 per cent of students were successful in achieving the grades necessary to take up places at their preferred university. King’s Oak principal Ian Frost said: “We are equally proud of a number of outstanding students who have secured superb apprenticeships and work placements. Our best wishes go to all of our departing Year 13 students on the next steps of their learning jour ney.”

Gordano

F

OR gymnast Ruby Harrold, it’s been a busy year. After winning a full set of medals in the Commonwealth Games, Ruby, from Churchill, has now picked up some impressive A-level results. The 18-year-old Gordano School student won a gold medal in the team event, a silver in the all-around competition and a bronze on the uneven bars. And when she picked up her results, she was delighted with an AS in biology and an A2 at PE. Ruby trains six days a week at the Academy of Gymnastics in Portishead and attends Gordano because its working relationship with the academy means lessons can be tailored to suit her training commitments. Ruby is taking A-levels at the school over two years and plans to return in September where she will study an A2 in biology. Ruby said: “Fitting in school and training can be tough. “But it was worth it to compete in the Commonwealth Games. It was totally amazing and the atmosphere was fantastic. “To get three medals was a real achievement and now to pick up results which I am pleased with is the cherry on the top of the cake.” The school saw 74 per cent of students gain A-levels at grades A*-C, with 21 per cent achieving A or A* grades. The overall pass rate for grades A*-E was 98 per cent.

The sixth form has grown significantly over the years and now has 405 on roll, 176 of whom picked up their results last week. Head teacher Gary Lewis said: “We

T NAILSEA School it was headteacher Chris Wade’s first year at the helm. He said: “An impressive set of A-level results was achieved by the Year 13 students at Nailsea School this year. “Following a change to the examination process, the pressure was on, but this did not deter the students, who performed really well.” School presidents Oli Presland and Alice Keyworth, both 18, proved they were maths buffs with an A* and an A respectively. Oli added a further three B grades and Alice one B and one C to their cache. Identical twins Hollie and Jessica Atkinson, 18, mirrored their results with two A* grades and one A. The girls are now heading off in different directions – with Hollie going to Exeter and Jess

to University College London – but maintaining the similarities by both reading biological sciences. Also among the high-flyers at the Mizzymead Road academy were Sophie Williams, who with three As is off to Exeter to read Spanish, and Harry George, who achieved three A grades and one A*. Harry is another heading south to Exeter, to read maths. Mr Wade added: “With the national picture being one of lower grades it is great to see Nailsea students competing for and securing the top university places. “Of course, all students work incredibly hard to achieve the best grades possible, and all the staff at Nailsea School are incredibly proud of the Year 13 students and wish them every success in their future careers.”

North Bristol Post 16 Centre

T

EENAGERS at the North Bristol Post 16 Centre celebrated outstanding successes in A-level results, marking another year of excellent academic and personal achievements for students. The pass rate was 99 per cent, with a high proportion of students achieving A* to B grades. Marian Curran, director of the centre, which has bases at Redland Green School and Cotham School, said: “I am really delighted that for another year running our students and staff have worked hard to achieve these superb results. “We are extremely pleased with the outstanding progress all our students have made due to excellent teaching at the centre. “People were concerned that moving to linear examinations would depress results, we have shown yet again at the North Bristol Post 16 Centre high quality teaching and learning overcomes these concer ns.” Eleven students will be taking up their offers of places at Oxford and Cambridge and four students will begin courses in medicine and dentistry. A large proportion of students successfully secured Russell Group university places and a number of students landed places on competitive vocational degree courses such as midwifery. Winterbourne International Academy

T

HERE were plenty of smiling faces at Winterbourne International Academy as students celebrated some of the best A-level results the school has ever seen. More than 70 per cent of students achieved A* to B in subjects including applied business, economics, mathematics, further mathematics, philosophy and technology. Year 11 student Ximyu Shen, 16, took her A-level maths two years early and achieved the top A* grade. Other top performing students included: ● Kapil Argawal (A A A A) ● Anya Appou (A* A* A* A B) ● Louise Chandler (A* A A) ● Zoe Johnson (A A A) ● Kim Grosvenor (A A A) ● Anastasia Oates (A A A) ● Philip Sequeiros-Peggs (A* A* A* A) ● Yan Zhang (A* A A B). Deputy head girl Laura Hickey, 18, was thrilled with her results, which will see her go to Cardiff University next month to study psychology. She achieved a grade A in psychology, a B in maths and an A in biology. She said: “I’m so, so happy I got into Cardiff. When I saw it this morning I was just jumping around – I couldn’t believe it.” Winterbourne International Academy principal, Rob Evans, said: “We are enormously proud of this year's post-16 results – a testament of our student's dedication and hard work, together with the first class support of their teachers.”

Redland High

R

EDLAND High School are celebrating after another excellent set of A-level results. The school says it excelled across the curriculum, with a 100 per cent pass rate in all subjects. And girls once again bucked the national trend by achieving outstanding success in the sciences. Nearly half of all pupils sitting their A-levels studied at least one of the three science subjects and more than 75 per cent of the grades awarded in these subjects were at A* or A. Girls hoping to study medicine at university have achieved the required grades to take up their places. This followed a successful year for the science department in which four students achieved the Gold CREST (CREativity in Science and Technology) Award. Success was not confined to the sciences. Of those studying modern languages, 65 per cent of pupils were awarded the top A*/A grade, while all girls studying art and design and 86 per cent of those studying English literature achieved A* to B grades. Gloria Lau, from Clifton, and Madeleine Tickell, from Bishopston, both achieved four A* grades, including the extended project qualification, and secured their places at their chosen universities. Caroline Bateson, the school’s headmistress, said “I am delighted that this year has been another outstanding year for the school. There is certainly no shortage of girls interested in STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) at Redland High and we are proud to see our pupils excelling right across the curriculum. We wish them well as they progress on to the next stage of their lives.”

LLIE Wood became the first student in the history of Yate International Academy, and its predecessor King Edmund, to secure a place at Cambridge University. Her beaming father looked on as she open her results to show she had achieved the A* and two As required in geography, French and mathematics. She will study French and Spanish at Cambridge. All students at the academy passed their exams, with 22 per cent achieving A* to A grades and 55 per cent gaining A* to B grades – representing a 40 per cent improvement on last year’s results. Sarah Iles, whose determination achieved fantastic GCSE results exceeding expectations two years ago, also did exceptionally well in her A-levels. The A*, A and B secured her a place at Bath Spa University to study psychology. The academy’s principal, Roger Gilbert, said: “The results of this group of student is extremely pleasing. Their promise from GCSEs has been realised and I am personally delighted for all of them. “These are the best set of A-level results we have had and I’d like to pay tribute to the hard work of all those involved in this success, particularly staff of the federation and the parents of the students themselves.”

● Yate Academy pupils picking up their A-level results

Queen Elizabeth’s Hospital QUEEN Elizabeth’s Hospital boys achieved a 100 per cent pass rate at A-level for the ninth year in a row, with 94 per cent of grades at A* to C grade and 80 per cent at A* to B. A third of individuals taking the examinations at the school achieved straight A* or A grades in their three or four A-level subjects and 22 per cent were awarded at the A* grade. QEH’s headmaster, Stephen Holliday, said: “Again our exceptional A-level and AS-level results mean that about 10 per cent of boys from the year group have been offered places at Oxford and Cambridge, in addition to a raft of others who will be off to medical, veterinary and dentistry schools as well as other top universities. “Our consistently strong record for top results is part of the much greater package that we offer to boys in preparing them for higher education and successful future careers. Boys leave QEH with not only the qualifications but the confidence to meet the challenges of world ahead.”
