It’s been an A+ effort and the results speak volumes. Until now every architect I’ve met believes they have the best idea in the world. They should all go back to school and unlearn that attitude. B+H is different. There’s no hierarchy, we all came into the room as equals and the results exceeded all expectations. We all felt we’d contributed and it has led to a lot of good things in the last nine months. - MATTHEW LAI, CHIEF DESIGN OFFICER NEXT STORY GROUP

Project size 1.5M ft2
Completion Date In Progress
Overview
Fred Hutch is a world leader in cancer research, and their facilities are top notch. While highly functional, over time the design of their interior spaces became misaligned with their growing organizational culture. Recognizing the key role that the built environment plays in the productivity, well being,
attraction, and retention of faculty and staff, Fred Hutch engaged us to embark on a study of their culture, values, and functions. Focus groups, visioning exercises, staff shadowing, demographic, and industry research and benchmarking informed subsequent design studies aimed at bringing the spirit of their culture and mission to their facilities, while giving them options for future densification and growth within their existing real estate.

fact 1 Waterloo is the biggest Canadian Development office, home to Canooglers from around the world.
Design result The Google experience permeates the old factory building, starting at the entry, with the two story atrium flooding the communal spaces with gathering areas with a central cafe. Design and architectural
moves were kept raw to honor the character of the building. The most unaccessible space in the building was repurposed. A new central cafe activates the two-story space & incorporates open-circulation design, which promotes impromptu interactions & meetings. Unique spaces were tucked in and around the building to create moments of excitement to reference the playfulness of Google’s culture.

fact 1
Coterie was founded by two women executives who previously ran a consulting business, helping companies with organization and strategy.
design strategy The Coterie Worklounge launched to serve a gap that co-founders Leah Richmond and Su-Zette Sparks see in the market an upscale space where a growing number of independent workers can eat, entertain clients and work. The two-floor
space is divided into “zones, one that buzzes like a coffee shop and others with varying degrees of quietness. On weekends and off-hours, groups can rent out the Worklounge for events. Tech startups may grab a lot of attention, but freelancers exist in every industry. Many find it isolating and difficult to work from home, and expensive to rent their own office.

Our resulting design has been acknowledged by the user groups as having captured the essence of their creative process.

Design The design was driven by the need for collaborative work spaces paired with dynamic social spaces and engaging passive areas. The materiality of each space has a very human quality. Warm neutrals are weaved throughout in the natural wood materials, bronze accents,
and textural fabrics. Technology is seamlessly integrated with the design. Specialized built in casework houses some of this software development company’s most hi-tech devices in a way that is easily usable and aesthetically beautiful. Each area is outfitted with subtle and useful plug-in opportunities. Details, such as thoughtfully applied punches of red, enhance the way the design is used and harken to the idea of progressive heritage.

Design An existing two-story building is reimagined for use as a recruiting center. As the first impression for visitors, partners and prospective employees, the space had to express the unique personality of the company and incorporate a “wow factor to engage
visitors immediately upon entry. The design pairs innovation and technology with the iconic natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest. The space incorporates product demonstration areas, study and meeting spaces, a fireplace lounge and a wine bar. Full-size evergreen trees grow in light wells throughout, skylights fill both floors with natural light, and an open stair activates the two-story atrium area.

Design Team cohesiveness, social and cultural connection is at the heart of this Turn-10 studios project. Gaming software projects often take up to 2 years to develop and require over 150 people. Designers were challenged to come up with a creative, professional space that makes groups
of 150+ people feel like a single, cohesive team. Spatial layout was constructed to encourage people to travel between floors and connect in a central gathering space. Visitors are greeted by an inspiring entrance expressing the company’s brand featuring authentic race cars.

Meeting rooms are designed to easily transform into war rooms, depending on project demand. The kitchen and dining area easily converts into an events or all-hands meeting space.
