60 BLOOR STREET WEST
RENEWING PREMIER URBAN DESTINATIONS 60 Bloor St. West enjoys a premier location in the mid-town office and retail market of Toronto. However, over the years the property had been losing its competitive edge due to less efficient building systems and a dated appearance, underscored as the immediate area transformed to contemporary design and intensification. B+H led the major renovation and reskinning of Morguard’s Bay-Bloor mixed use retail and office tower. Housing portions of Holt Renfrew’s office spaces and the Gap’s flagship Bloor location, this aging 1970s building has been revitalized from the outside in, to rival the dynamic and rapidly developing retail and commercial developments along the Bay and Bloor corridors. The project utilized innovative technology to re-skin the glazed facade from the exterior, while maintaining minimal impact to the office spaces within. The new design modernizes and lightens the look of the building and enhances its aesthetic appeal, removing the heavy precast structure, resulting in a contemporary and streamlined building. The building also underwent major upgrades to the mechanical, electrical and life safety systems, achieveing LEED Gold EB:OM certification. In combination with the redesigned exterior and lobby, these changes bring this building on par with class A office spaces in the area.

INTERNATIONAL PHARMACEUTICAL COMPANY
WORKPLACE DESIGN FOR THE MODERN AGE This International Pharmaceutical Company needed a new office space in Shanghai, and they were ready to financially and personally invest in their staff through a new workplace strategy concept called iWork. This office building is the influential landmark that ties together the previously constructed and standardly configured Phase I building and the unique requirements of the lab space in Phase II. For our client, Phase III wasn’t about cramming staff into cubicle farm disguised as a sound investment. It was about providing visual and interactive connection through complementary structural and landscape architecture. Reflecting on the need for a campus design, we helped our client develop a design dialogue amidst the three phases while being equally attentive to their need for an innovative activitybased workspace—a place where people wanted to come to work.

THE MIXC QINGDAO
RETAIL DESIGN FOR A DISRUPTIVE FUTURE Located in China’s eastern Shandong province in a city famous for its beer and beautiful coastal geography, the MixC Qingdao is a development owned by China Resources Land (CRL), one of China’s leading commercial real estate developers. CRL’s flagship mall and home to its high-end retail brand, MixC Qingdao is the largest of its kind nationwide, serving as the city’s newest commercial landmark. In 2016, B+H was commissioned by the client to renovate key interior areas as well as the curtain wall of the 6th level. Our client’s vision was to transform the existing building into a lifestyle destination; one that would address the disruptive impact of electronic, mobile and social commerce and unite the community through shared social spaces encouraging connection and interaction. Understanding this disruptive digital transformation and its impact on the retail industry, our unique design concepts for levels B1, B2 and L6 demonstrate the impact of social attractors. Through dedicated public spaces, visitors are offered unique and memorable experiences, transforming the MixC Qingdao into a lifestyle destination rather than simply another place to shop.

TORONTO-DOMINION CENTRE REVITALIZATION
RESTORING AN ICON B+H enjoys a long-standing relationship with the Toronto-Dominion Centre since the development’s inception in the 1960s. The firm has been the Architect or Joint-Venture Architect for the Toronto-Dominion Bank Tower, Royal Trust Tower, Canadian Pacific Tower, Maritime Life Tower, and Ernst & Young Tower. Mies van der Rohe acted as design consultant for the three original buildings. This project received the 25-Year Award from the Ontario Association of Architects In 2003 and Office Building of the Year Award (for a project over 1,000,000 ft2) from the Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA) Canada. B+H is also the Architect for a technical upgrades/ renovation program that has been on-going since 1985. The revitalization project will recapture the original vision as a gold-coloured screen film was added to the windows several years after the towers were built. The bronze tint of the new glazing will be more in keeping with the original concept. EAU CLAIRE TOWER
IMPACTFUL ENTRIES & IMPRESSIONS Located in the up-and-coming Eau Claire neighbourhood, this new tower is connected to Calgary’s +15 network—the world’s most extensive pedestrian skywalk system linking some of the city’s most important buildings. As part of this assignment, we were asked to make recommendations for this project to address its needs for an impressive exterior design and to make a noteworthy impact on visitors as they enter the building through the lobby. The design had to be in keeping with the existing development within the context of its neighbourhood as well as the Oxford brand. The building sits far from the street edge and creates an ‘urban lawn’—a large green open space, which will be used to host small markets during warm months. The façade of the building incorporates a custom-designed ceramic frit, the purpose of which is two-fold. The first, to increase performance through the reduction of heat gain and light reflection and second, to create dynamic movement. Designed to mimic cloud formation and movement, motion is generated across the exterior glass through a process of pixilation and fragmentation. The lobby features a dramatic transparent glass podium and dynamic stone walls that create a sense of energy within the space.

601 WEST HASTINGS
URBAN RENEWAL THROUGH HOLISTIC DESIGN Adjacent to the largest transportation hub in downtown Vancouver, 601 West Hastings is key to the ongoing regeneration of the area. Prior to its redesign, this corner was insufficiently zoned for commercial space. To respond to the growing needs of the city, it was imperative to work creatively with city officials to increase commercial allotment while retaining as much public open space as possible. Working holistically, B+H redesigned this uninspired corner of downtown Vancouver into a usable community plaza with a tower that will create a strong streetscape presence and an iconic silhouette along the skyline. Effectively addressing the need for density, the new 25-storey office tower is thoughtfully designed and tailored with subtle folds, overlaps, and reveals in the corners, emphasizing the curved uplift at the public plaza. The striking overhang at the building’s corner plaza invites pedestrians to engage with the space and is sculpted to capture maximum sunlight and allow for clear views. The base of the tower uses a minimum floor area for the lobby, maximizing usable outdoor public space. Ground-level retail and a full-height water feature at the entrance to the building animate the corner. This animation is further emphasized by the exterior of the tower, which was designed to catch and playfully reflect sunlight through a mullion pattern that evokes the fine stitching of a suit. Sustainable features were incorporated to ensure long-lasting design and conservation of resources. Features include low flow water fixtures, increased insulation and thermal performance materials, daylight sensors for lighting control, bicycle parking and a white roof, which reduces heat absorption and conduction to the interior of the building.

CONTAINERS
TRANSITIONING FROM INDUSTRIAL TO COMMERCIAL Containers was inspired by the False Creek Flats’ historical railway and designed to be a timeless landmark in the area. Containers’ first phase, Tower 1, involved a five-storey building which now houses Columbia College. B+H then designed the seven-storey Tower 2, now occupied by the Canada Revenue Agency. The project won the NAIOP Vancouver and Business in Vancouver Commercial Real Estate Award of Excellence in the Office Lease category. Containers project breathes fresh life into a formerly-industrial part of Vancouver that is transitioning into a commercial quarter. Incorporating significant sustainable design features, the building’s colour palette was inspired by the freight containers of the adjacent railway yard. Bold blue and orange aluminum cladding establish Containers as a prominent point of reference on Terminal Avenue.

TRUE NORTH SQUARE
CONSTRUCTING A CULTURAL CORE The design of True North Square was an opportunity to embrace architectural distinction and feature a bold design that would complement Winnipeg’s historic skyline. Appealing not only to the downtown Winnipeg Jets fan base, the square acts as a multi-use landmark in the city’s Sports, Hospitality, and Entertainment District (SHED) strategy, which strives for multi-scaled civic engagement and positive public use. Our development of a cutting-edge design provided a platform to draw both local attention and global recognition. With True North Square also serving as office, retail, hospitality, and residential space, our client envisioned the area as a cultural hub for people to shop, work, live, and hang out. Creating a compelling narrative for this multi-functional space meant clearly defining a public message and architectural design focus. Our Advance Strategy team researched how people would actively use the space at street-level, which informed the seamless design collaboration between our Architecture and Planning & Landscape teams. Our design sought to create a new urban spectacle—a forum of activity in a thriving metropolitan core, broadcasting excitement and dynamism throughout.

Each tower includes a series of internal hanging gardens and is capped off with a heightened lantern, one being the inverse of the other, which is derived from the structural module, symbolizing an illuminated bundle of reeds.

IRVING OIL HOME OFFICE
DESIGNING WITH AN EYE TO THE FUTURE The Home Office for family-owned Irving Oil brings together employees spread across six offices in Saint John under one roof to enhance business outcomes and take the company into the next stage of their evolution. The Home Office’s proportions and horizontal datums respond to the surrounding historical context of neighbouring buildings, reinforced through the frieze, cornices, and setback above the podium. The main entrance is landscaped to echo the park across the street, including a setback that accommodates for ample greenery. Irving Oil artifacts and memorabilia are displayed in the lobby to celebrate the company’s history. This is carried throughout the building via photography and digital displays commemorating a storied past while looking toward an innovative and dynamic future. Featuring a soaring central atrium daylit from above, the entrance lobby is designed to accommodate all employees for gatherings and is animated by an open staircase connecting upper levels. Visibly integrating all levels and business units, the central staircase encourages unexpected interactions and social engagement across the company. The use of natural materials such as white oak, patinaed bronze and a variety of Canadian limestones, paired with upholstery and carpet colours inspired by the Bay of Fundy and beach stone blue hues, create an authentically East Coast aesthetic. The design team facilitated workshops in consultation with senior leadership and a cross section of departments that represented demographics and workgroups to seek input on Irving’s current state and strategic direction. The data collected was used to evaluate workplace solutions, resulting in a workplace and interior design that advanced the client’s objectives. Our team was able to efficiently plan individual work points to allocate more space for collaborative settings and communal spaces as preferred amenity for employees. Rooted in wellness, the design includes features and amenities including access to natural light, promoting movement through design, onsite health services, 24/7 access to the fitness centre, bike parking, and healthy food options in the café along with access to outdoor dining. Sustainability was at the forefront of the design approach from the onset of the project and the building achieved a LEED NC Silver certification.

UNITING A WORKPLACE THROUGH DESIGN B+H was commissioned to fit-out this confidential 1970/80s class C property with recent shell and core upgrades by the LL. ~130,000 ft2 with 7 floors – three floors fully or partially below grade. Half of the building was designed as a standalone facility in the 1970s and the building was expanded in the 1980s, adding a mirror image second half. The project challenges of two different sets of building systems and conditions, two cores with elevators and vertical egress at each, required careful attention to details and specifications. The project started in 2/2017 and as of this month has its first occupants moving in. The project initially started as 5 floors of office space with meeting rooms, collaboration areas, and workspace. It included a full-service café and A/V conference facilities. About mid-project the scope expanded to include three robotics labs, separate wood, metal, testing, and fabrication workshops, with a portion of the adjacent parking garage appropriated as additional testing facilities. We also were asked to look at the building approach by auto, transit, and pedestrian and provide design and environmental graphics to improve access and the user experience.

TENCENT SEAFRONT TOWERS
DESIGNING VERTICAL CAMPUS FOR FUTURE INNOVATORS Tencent is best known for running China’s biggest messenger app, WeChat. In recent years, the company’s business has expanded into areas including video games, AI, and entertainment and has become the most valuable company in Asia. Tencent operates in a highly innovative industry where top talent is young, dynamic and smart. Our client’s vision lies in promoting its global reach and creating a vibrant and collaborative work environment that fosters innovation, sparks creativity, and inspires staff. Tencent’s twin Seafront Towers (rising 50 and 39 storeys) serve as the new home for the tech conglomerate’s 12,000 employees and stand as city landmarks. Working as interior designer, B+H worked closely with the client and architect to adapt the concept of a vertical campus to reflect Tencent’s community-focused culture. Reminiscent of a university campus, this vertical campus offers amenities for work and play. Tencent’s mostly millennial talent will find a convivial workplace environment – part lifestyle hub and part social village – within an ergonomic and modern building. The towers are connected by skybridges, where those moving between towers can interact and meet to create synergies and generate fresh ideas. Each skybridge has its own unique theme.

REFLECTING COMPANY CULTURE B+H was retained to work with Jones Lang LaSalle for a global tech company looking to expand their workspace in Scotia Plaza, located at 44 King Street West in Toronto. Our main objective was to create an office space that would translate the company’s core values of providing the utmost in client satisfaction and supporting their talent base through spaces and experiences that embody and strengthen their internal culture. Our design approach was based on creating a truly inclusive and collaborative process by engaging the client as an integral member of the design team. The client has an internal design and construction management division dedicated to their projects, where the focus of design is rooted in creating collaborative spaces for their talent to support their needs and achieve a higher level of productivity. Our design strategy was aligned with our client’s focus on data collection and ensuring that all decisions were carefully considered to reduce risk. We were directly involved in their due diligence process to collect information pertaining to space utilization and the right mix of amenities to attract and retain the type of talent they need to be truly successful. The resulting design features an entire floor dedicated to amenities such as a Food & Beverage component and an AV training centre. Social hubs and ping pong tables are scattered throughout community zones, creating centres of activity to encourage interactions between team members and allow for serendipitous exchanges between colleagues that may not otherwise spend time together. By offering a diversity of common and private workspaces, the company’s talent can choose which type of environment they think would be most conducive to achieving their goals. These spaces are complemented by small meeting rooms that are fully equipped with the technology required to connect with global teams and clients.

ENGINEERING HUB In 2018, this company was seeking an innovative and forward-thinking Interior Design partner to create a leading-edge solution for their new Canadian head office. B+H’s proven track record with tech companies delivering progressive and innovative interiors led to the client’s approval. The client had leased the top five floors of a midtown office tower that provided outdoor terraces on two of the top floors. This unique feature coupled with a clean floorplate gave B+H a virtual blank slate to create a highly collaborative, creative and fun workplace. As this company was in midst of revitalizing their branding guidelines, B+H was tasked with implementing a new strategy for the Canadian head office that would enhance their brand expression and create moments of respite, play and memorable landmarks. B+H’s Experiential Graphic Design (EDG) team was brought on board and a close collaboration ensued so that each floor expresses an individual sense of identity through the overarching theme of movement. The schedule for this project was very aggressive, but B+H was able to meet all the required milestones and budget restrictions, exceeding the client’s expectations. CREATING AN OFFICE OF INSPIRATION Headquartered in downtown Seattle, with a booming online presence, this digital tech giant looked toward the B+H interior design team to envision a space that inspires their employees, attracts new talent, and reflects their company culture. Tilt 49 is a new, 11-storey building in the Denny Triangle neighborhood of Seattle with 5 additional below grade parking levels. This tech company needed a new space for their Website Services team and landed on this site. They developed a set of internal guidelines called the 3+1 concept and asked the B+H team to prototype their configuration. Three floors of the building are dedicated to office workstations followed by an amenity floor with alternative workspaces. The 3+1 concept was developed to maximize headcount as well as encourage movement throughout the space. TWITTER CANADA HEADQUARTERS
DESIGNING AN ENGAGING EMPLOYEE EXPERIENCE Twitter promotes engaging, social experiences for its users. Accordingly, they required an office reflecting the same collaborative, inspirationdriven experience for their employees. This project moves them from a cramped, outgrown (so, overcrowded) site into a much larger facility that allows for rapid growth, fosters collaboration, and feels like a home away from home for both employees and guests. The team wanted a decidedly non-corporate and more residential look and feel for the space, while maintaining the functionality a workplace. Eschewing private offices or panelled workstations, the design balances open collaborative spaces and quiet zones, allowing people to work anywhere within the facility – whether standing, sitting or perching. Audiovisual and connectivity feature throughout the site, ensuring virtually every square foot is usable for multiple settings. Common areas feature full service amenities to provide collaborative buzz throughout, and quiet spaces allow for occasional heads-down work while 1-2 person rooms allow for confidential calls or briefings. We promoted sustainability by retaining the existing flooring and mechanical features. Reinforcing the collaborative nature of the company’s workplace ideology, all staff are assigned space in an open bench; a full service café with daily meal service reinforces the importance of staff and guests feeling at home. The Library functions as an important bridge of workspace wings and provides a living room and open meeting space. The “Commons” is truly a multifunctional space, including a kitchen, lounge, cafeteria, meeting spaces, town hall, games and recreation spaces. Office space is scaled for growth, meaning this rich, attractive space represents them now and in the future. Awards Toronto ARIDO Award of Excellence 2015

CORPORATE OIL & GAS COMPANY
BEYOND TRADITIONAL CORPORATE DESIGN TRENDS B+H was responsible for the interior revitalization of two historic buildings for this corporate client, who wanted something unique and was prepared to step beyond traditional corporate design trends. With modest achievements and a mission to treat historical preservation as an opportunity, our interior design reveals a beautifully functional and non-typical business work environment. Our design strategy for building one increased social and collaborative spaces featuring training, education and breakout areas as well as multi-functional common spaces echoing a town hall environment. Concurrently, building two was designed in a complementary fashion offering a landing pad of comfortable and inviting open-concept offices, the staff kitchen and café. Working with the historic architecture, our team focused on modest enhancements that turned heritage spaces into something sophisticated and modern. The design features clean and sophisticated touches with millwork clad and painted finishes that reference the spaces’ history and preserved classic details including the molding and wainscoting. However, to ensure that our design solution prominently addressed our client’s expectations for brand identity and company culture, we used the corporate colour scheme to highlight fixtures and features with high visual interest. Attention to sound also played a huge role in the artistic-meet-functional goals of the combined space; we added acoustic panels to the wooden slats. Headquarters for employees of various functions including business development, call centre representatives, and graphic designers, the space is designed to create an open and transparent feel while also addressing the needs of the company’s diverse staff. GARDINER ROBERTS LLP
BUILDING FOR EFFICIENCY AND EQUALITY After occupying the same offices at Scotia Plaza for over 20 years, Gardiner Roberts LLP was keen to see how their office and culture could be realized in other locations. An initial test fit of Bay Adelaide east yielded a 10% reduction in office space and they seized the opportunity to take advantage of the amenities of a newly constructed office tower. Working closely with the Gardiner Roberts design committee, B+H was able to demonstrate the potential of the building’s floor plate. The practice area was streamlined into an efficient work plan. Collaborative workrooms situated in each corner are equipped with technology to facilitate universal office sizes equate equal status for all lawyers, regardless of status. While lawyer offices are located on the perimeter, glass office fronts were positioned to allow natural light to flow through. A gradient acid etch pattern, referred to as a “cloud” provides visual privacy at eye level which diffuses into clear glass above for natural light to flow through into the office core. All interior offices for clerks utilized this same glass with sliding glass doors. The creation of a client centre was centered around the reception. A variety of meeting room sizes, catering facilities, and a large multi-purpose conference room with skyfold and integrated technology affords Gardiner Roberts with enhanced and integrated conference abilities not available at their previous location. Their monthly tool box seminars can now be located within their premises instead of hotel conference rooms. A firm lounge anchors this facility that not only provides staff dining and coffee breaks, but a TV lounge with superior views from floor-to–ceiling windows. With the provision of audio visual devices, this room is also used for ad hoc meetings and staff functions. With these added amenities, Gardiner Roberts is now able to host evening events for clients and to be able to use this space for charitable endeavors.

MICROSOFT STUDIO H
CONSOLIDATION FOR COLLABORATION Designing Microsoft Studio H came with one critical direction—create one team. The 260-person OSG Design Team had been spread out across multiple buildings on Microsoft’s Redmond campus, so we designed an interior to consolidate staff and provide maximum flexibility and access to amenities as well as each other. Having built a strong relationship with Microsoft on past projects, we knew their Workplace Advantage strategy came with protocols and a near-mathematical approach to workplace engagement and improvement. With that personal and in-depth understanding of their needs, we pushed Microsoft to comfortable extremes. Our Advance Strategy team conducted a visioning session to learn how Microsoft pictured the collaborative workspace in Studio H. From past experience we know that “collaboration” means more than what’s understood on the surface, so our focused client-designer visioning session went deeper to explore what unique characteristics Microsoft and its staff couldn’t do without. We learned that fluidity in footprint and circulation leading to and away from a common space—aptly named the Hub—was the fount of their startup-vibe inspiration.

MICROSOFT TURN-10
INFUSING COHESION AND CULTURE Team cohesiveness, social and cultural connection is at the heart of this Turn-10 studios project. Gaming software projects often take up to 2 years to develop and require over 150 people. Designers were challenged to come up with a creative, professional space that makes groups of 150+ people feel like a single, cohesive team. Spatial layout was constructed to encourage people to travel between floors and connect in a central gathering space. Visitors are greeted by an inspiring entrance expressing the company’s brand featuring authentic race cars.

EXECUTIVE CORPORATE OFFICES
CELEBRATING A LEGACY This Telecommunications company sought to relocate their executive offices and create an environment that was evocative of a global Fortune 500 company with a special focus on providing an integrated audio/visual solution throughout the office. Their new location included one floor dedicated to non-executives that had previously been located outside of the downtown core, and a private floor for the CEO and upper management team. To accommodate offices for non-executives and to take advantage of the natural light afforded by the space, B+H guided out client in the creation of inboard offices with glass office fronts. Non-exterior facing offices were unassigned, to be used by visiting Bell employees. Workstations are located on the perimeter with low panels that provide privacy while seated, and allow natural light to flow in. Additional spaces include collaboration zones with proximity to a coffee bar, and meeting and copier rooms that create a central hub to facilitate workflow. Finally, the design incorporated historic artifacts from the client’s archives to create a sense of legacy in this brand new space.

JACKMAN REINVENTION INC.
FOSTERING CREATIVITY THROUGH DESIGN The location selected is a two-floor, 18,530 ft2 space in a west-downtown heritage post-and-beam structure. New materials like marble tile, concrete floors, stainless steel and wood plank recall the building’s industrial past, while furnishings are sleek and modern. The workspace is laid out with creativity in mind. “Breakout booths” flank a cluster of glass-fronted boardrooms, allowing groups to filter in and out of boardroom meetings and start up spontaneous offshoot meetings nearby. The large kitchen serves as an inviting social hub, while playful graphics and comfortable open areas make the lower studio spaces feel more like a home. While the upper studios are left largely raw to showcase the grandeur of the woodframed space, the office’s bright back stairwell features walls, treads, risers, ceilings and doors, all fully coated in Jackman’s signature “reinvention red,” echoing the energy of the firm’s design minds. Jackman moved into their new space in the spring of 2013. As posters, graphics and props pass through the office, the space serves as an ever-changing stage for Jackman’s work and a true representation of who Jackman is as a firm. GOOGLE TORONTO
ELEVATING AND ENHANCING THE CLIENT EXPERIENCE A steady increase in client traffic, coupled with a shortage of conference rooms created a need for a floor that would be devoted to meeting and collaboration space. Unlike the other workplace floors, this new one was to have particular focus on the client experience. The design was to be harmonious with the rest of the facility, yet it needed to be distinctly elevated. The aesthetic should be playful – but not trendy. The mood had to be fun and colorful, but with a level of sophistication. Google Toronto renovations entailed creating of a conference floor – with centralized reception – auditorium facility for tech talks, large training center and multi-functional meeting rooms and collaboration spaces. Instilling a local identity to a global brand was achieved by creation of a graphic programme – by utilizing images that evoke Ontario wilderness. GOOGLE WATERLOO
PROMOTING COLLEAGUE CONNECTION Inspiration for “Waterloo Project” was drawn from freeways as a medium for connecting workers to colleagues both near and far, while providing connections to basic human needs like food, rest, and shelter. Employing scenic routes as an example, the freeway can also serve as a destination onto itself with activity nodes present along the route. The project itself posed a unique challenge. Located in a historic multibuilding site that had been merged into a single complex through multiple renovations, the client was looking for much more than just a superficial fit-up. Our team rose to the challenge and proposed an adaptive reuse of the space that not only addressed the client’s needs, but also tackled the complications posed by the building’s unique structure. This included the demolition of a floor that didn’t align with the others, the pouring of two new slabs to accommodate this removal, and the installation of elevators, a grand staircase, and new exterior entrances. These additions were done in cooperation with the architecture side of our firm. By combining the expertise of both interior design and base-building architecture experts, we were able to meet the full scope of the client’s needs. This type of cross-collaboration allowed our interior design team to leverage the expertise of their peers to create unique time and cost saving synergies. This client also desired a highly sustainable space. We were able to help the team implement sustainable solutions within the projects, such as a green walls , LED lights, bike friendly spaces, strict adherence to environmentally friendly product/furniture standards, and landscaping features. MICROSOFT SUZHOU
DESIGNING BEYOND THE OFFICE This project is being custom designed and built for the International Hi-tech Company by Industrial Park of Suzhou Science and Technology Development Co., Ltd. The site is located at southeast corner of SIS Park and upon completion, will be used as its’s R&D centre as well as house their other related business functions. Phase I of the project can accommodate 1,500 people, with Phase II doubling that capacity to 3,000 people in total. The project comprises a series of new amenities, and will be integrated with existing buildings in SIS Park. The Master Plan layout has the plot defined as three individual units, with the west building being proposed for Phase I and the remaining two buildings earmarked for Phase II. Three staggered podiums on ground level help define the three public areas, including a west courtyard housing the Envisioning Center, which celebrates arrival to the campus with a generous drop-off area. A secluded courtyard on the north will blend the campus with the existing landscape and enlarge the central green axis, which runs east-west through the park, providing a green pedestrian entrance. Finally, the north courtyard will also house sports facilities, which may include a soccer field and basketball court.

HENKEL CANADA CORPORATE OFFICE
BALANCING TOGETHER YET SEPARATE The corporate offices of Henkel Canada are designed to house their three Canadian divisions under one single brand, in one location. As well, a key objective was to apply global brand standards to the Toronto office. The new standards apply to the physical space, types of finishes and furniture. Henkel’s vision for its new offices is one in which the space and amenity needs of the component divisions are met while shared resources are centralized, creating greater efficiency and enabling knowledge sharing between employees. Accordingly, separate spaces were created for Henkel Canada’s three divisions to address their particular needs (for example, the adhesives division has a direct connection to a lab space used for continual testing), while a central core and circulation spine were used to connect areas used by all employees. These common areas include conferencing, informal meeting, staff facilities, and a large lunchroom. The design also maximizes access to light and views by locating the private offices on the interior and the workstations that are used by the majority of staff in the open area with direct access to natural light.

HARBINGER COMMUNICATIONS
A SHOWCASE OF INNOVATION Harbinger Communications is a leader within the Canadian Marketing landscape. As business has grown significantly for them over the past few years, Harbinger was beginning to feel constrained in their charming, but highly-compartmentalized multi-level space. The mandate was to assist in the site selection process and then to create an interior space that would be inviting and would stimulate creativity and collaboration - while acting as showcase for the innovative work that they do. To achieve this, a common studio space was created in the centre of the office. Ninety percent of the staff was seated in this open office environment while the remainder work in glass-fronted spaces that are closely connected to the studio. To further the interaction between the staff, a large multi-purpose space was created– serving as a lunchroom, casual meeting space, yoga studio, town hall and screening room. The finished product is a warm and inviting space that is bright, fresh and reflective of the young creative minds that walk through the door every morning. The graphics and signage developed for Harbinger were bold and impactful yet also playful keeping with the client’s ideology.

DESIGNING BEAUTIFUL VERSATILITY A bold mid-century inspired palette and classic, modern furniture assert themselves against a neutral canvas of light walls, black feature ceilings and residentially-inspired flooring. A custom reception desk and carpet draw from the same design aesthetic, bringing a residential feeling to the workplace. Splashes of colour help to ground the design and wood is used extensively to enhance warmth and texture. The new office layout provides for a wide range of versatile spaces for quiet reflection and collaboration, and to encourage conversation and social interaction. Multipurpose spaces can also be used in assorted configurations to suit various activities, with the ability of the reception, boardroom and lunchroom to transform into an elegant evening space with adjoining dining and bar facilities.

MICHAEL GARRON HOSPITAL PHASE 1 NEW PATIENT TOWER
WELCOMING AND ENGAGING COMMUNITY GATHERING SPACE This major renovation and expansion renews the former Toronto East General Hospital as a welcoming and engaging community gathering place and hub for health and wellness. The hospital’s main Coxwell Avenue frontage transforms into a lushly-landscaped urban oasis, a series of outdoor rooms shaded by oak and maple trees and subtly demarcated for conversation, play and quiet contemplation as well as for public events. The abundant greenery also links pedestrians to the hospital’s new main entrance, an expansive double-height atrium that overlooks the entrance court through floor-to-ceiling glass. The main entrance is in turn framed by the Ken and Marilyn Thompson Patient Care Centre, a new eight-storey wing that consolidates ambulatory care services and houses 215 inpatient beds, 80% of which are in single-patient rooms to enhance privacy, safety and infection control. Advanced new CT and MRI suites enable faster and more precise diagnostic imaging. CHANGI GENERAL HOSPITAL (INTEGRATED BUILDING & MEDICAL CENTRE BUILDING)
COLLECTIVE HEALING AND WELL-BEING The design features of the new Integrated Building and the new Medical Centre Building are the demonstration of an approach that is at once patientcentric, age- friendly, flexible and sustainable. It represents the first stage in the re-imagination of the Changi General Hospital as a community hub for wellness and healing. We approached the campus design as a whole, working towards optimizing operational efficiencies through a comprehensive functional planning approach focusing on key adjacencies, building linkages and opportunities for future expansion. NATIONAL SKIN CENTRE AND NATIONAL HEALTHCARE GROUP HQ
CREATING LINKS TO CARE AND COMMUNITY The National Skin Centre expansion announces a new Southern Gateway to the proposed master plan for the Health City @ Novena, using the topography to subtly frame the approach using rising terraces and cantilevered building masses carefully portioned to draw you in to the space. The new building is expressed as two massing components. The lower building element comfortably relates the National Skin Centre (NSC) block in scale and massing to the existing building providing easy linkages, courtyards and expansion potential whilst the upper block provides a unique identity and expression to the National Healthcare Group, (NHG). The massing aims to maximize the development potential of the available land without overwhelming the important public spaces it helps define. To encourage the use of public transport, there are covered pedestrian approaches from both the MRT and bus stops from the South West and South respectively. These are separated from the vehicular traffic which approaches the site from the East to a covered drop off under the new building that is shared with the existing building. These convenient pedestrian routes rise up through gentle ramps to a civic plaza or campus green and the proposed boulevard connecting the components of master plan including the expansion of the TTS Ambulatory Block and Medical School.

BUILDING N RENOVATION - HUMBER COLLEGE
DEEP ENERGY RETROFIT Built in 1988, Building N at Humber College’s main North Campus had long suffered from air and moisture infiltration and an inefficient heating and cooling system. In response, B+H led an interdisciplinary remediation program that greatly reduced energy consumption, improved occupant comfort and cost-effectively extended the building’s service lifespan by decades. We replaced the leaky original curtainwall with an all-new building envelope, featuring triple glazing, spectrally-sensitive glass, multiple layers of moisture barriers and an R-30 insulative value. THE UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO FACULTY OF LAW RENEWAL PROJECT
PUBLIC REALM RENEWAL IN CITY SPACES In recent years, the size and state of the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Law buildings were holding the school back. Lack of space was posing restrictions on class sizes, faculty office availability, extracurricular events and student interaction, with the law school’s buildings ranking as the #1 source of student dissatisfaction in each of the last four years. The faculty’s new Jackman Law building provides the school with an additional 66,000 ft2 of space in an iconic new home. A dramatic wing overlooking Queen’s Park Crescent will create a new landmark in the area with a rhythmic façade of glass and nickel fins. The crescent-shaped design follows the curve of the street in front of it to fully embrace the site’s prominent location. The new wing includes a 210-student lecture hall designed to function as both a classroom and a moot court, several seminar halls, a new student commons lounge and forum space, faculty and staff offices and a new food services outlet. Built as a link between this addition and the school’s existing Bora Laskin Law Library, the new Law Forum space acts as a link and a social hub -- helping to integrate the Faculty of Law’s newest addition in with the school’s historic past and foster an improved sense of community. Construction also included renovations to the library, adding a new, two-storey reading room. An additional, light renovation to the school’s historic Flavelle House aimed to reduce the building’s energy use by 13%. Altogether, the new facilities will double the law school’s existing space and provide a world-class environment for student learning, interaction and engagement. B+H was the project’s Executive Architect, with Toronto firm Hariri Pontarini Architects working as the Design Architect.

HUMBER COLLEGE LEARNING RESOURCE COMMONS
A GATEWAY TO ACTIVE LEARNING As the new main entrance to Humber’s North Campus in Etobicoke, the Humber College Learning Resource Commons serves as an inviting new home for student support, learning and socializing at Humber. The sixstorey, 260,000 ft2 facility includes a new library, acts as a centralized hub for student services and provides space for Humber’s School of Liberal Arts and Sciences and college administration. While some parts of the complex is open to students 24/7, others require more restricted access. The building’s design strikes a balance between expansive, lively spaces that serve the full school community and more secluded areas for faculty and administration. The project broke ground on October 4, 2013 and was completed in spring 2015. The project was certified LEED Canada-NC Silver and Toronto Green Standards Tier 1. B+H was the Design Architect.

EAGLE MOUNTAIN MIDDLE SCHOOL
EDUCATION, ENVIRONMENTS & EXPERIENCES Located in the Village of Anmore, the Eagle Mountain Middle School is nestled in the base of the mountains within an idyllic community, which has managed to maintain its semi-rural, natural environment. Bordered by parkland, old growth forests, and lakes, the placement of the building on a former landfill site takes full advantage of its natural surroundings. These links with nature also play a critical role in the education of its students through carefully considered lightfilled spaces, which seamlessly integrate into the neighbouring landscape. Featuring a steeply sloped three-level tiered design, the main classrooms, and media centre are arranged around an elevated central courtyard, which has been set one storey above the gymnasium and exploration level. The common courtyard is a space for exploration where students discover and interpret lessons learned from the classroom through direct and hands-on application. The lower level support spaces and gymnasium, the intermediate level healthy living area and shops, and the upper level classrooms and courtyard, are all connected by a stepped central hall that acts as a primary gathering space, forming the heart of the school. Through thoughtful experiences within its spaces, the school inspires teachers, staff, and visitors alike. Special design emphasis was put on evolving the classroom pods, the informal breakout spaces in the corridors, and the healthy living (art/foods/textiles) space. The building also includes an infant/child care centre, and a flexible gymnasium and multi-purpose hall, which are shared between the school and the community. LIBRARY ARCHIVES OF CANADA GATINEAU 2 NEW PRESERVATION STORAGE FACILITY
PRESERVING CANADA’S CULTURAL LEGACY Set upon a bucolic meadow outside the nation’s capital, the Gatineau 2 Preservation Facility is a state-of-the-art archives building that will protect and preserve the history of Canada for present and future generations. At the heart of the facility are six storage vaults that constitute a building within a building: their thick concrete shells are elevated a full storey above ground level for flood protection and are separated from the exterior building envelope to provide an additional layer of security and thermal isolation from the region’s extremes of temperature and humidity. The vaults have a capacity equivalent to 600,000 standard archival boxes, housed in a high-density automated storage and retrieval system (ASRS) with a robotic lift and crane. An advanced building automation system maintains precise levels of light, temperature, humidity and particulate, per international archival standards, for each type of media within the vaults. Architecturally, the building is a foil to the delicate glazed arches of the neighbouring Preservation Centre, a solid cubic mass angled at 45 degrees and appearing to float above a recessed ground level of transparent glass. Precast concrete panels wrap the upper levels, their horizontal bands of varying textures referencing the site’s ancient geological layers of rock, soil, and glacial till. OUR APPROACH TO RESIDENTIAL DESIGN Inspiring Residential Design Creates a Sense of Place Residential design is informed by how people live in their homes and within their communities. Home exists in every setting imaginable – from soaring towers, to mixed-use developments, new communities, in-fill projects, and revitalization initiatives. Regardless of the expression, creating a home is about creating a sense of place by responding and relating to its unique context. A diverse product and amenity mix will reflect how different people live and the variety required for sustainable neighbourhoods.
Design is further strengthened through the connections between people and spaces. Healthy developments allow for easy access to a variety of services and amenities, promote walkability, and facilitate connections between indoor and outdoor environments. Our integrated residential design solutions align best practice principles from urban planning, landscape, architecture, interior design, renewal, and hospitality to create livable and sustainable communities.

ALEXANDRA ENGLISH BAY
DESIGNING A CONNECTED, TIMELESS RESIDENCE Comprised of 85 contemporary green residences in Vancouver’s West End, the Alexandra’s provides exceptional views and a strong connection to English Bay and Stanley Park. The project’s interior spaces were influenced by; the clients’ desire to deliver a modern, elegant and timeless building; the importance of contributing to an already diverse and dynamic neighbourhood, and the revitalisation of 1930’s heritage façade. It was imperative for the colour palette of the lobby, amenity spaces, and suites to have a unique sensitivity to the environment and site surroundings. The direction for the vibrant use of colour in the common areas is set by the lobby’s art installation (a partial recreation of a lost oil painting, entitled ‘Nostalgia’). The suites’ two colour schemes aim to bring nature’s palette indoors with hues of the West Coast sand, sea, wood and stone. The neutral tones help to blur the line between interior and exterior space and allow the nearby ocean, mountain and city views to command attention.

EXPLORING USER EXPERIENCE The design of Harwood International 5 leverages its urban context, market forecasting, branding, and environmental and infrastructural elements. The user experience was explored and defined in a “day in the life” exercise to identify tenant expectations and lifestyle characteristics. “We felt if we could break the pattern of Harwood Street by being simply a street where you go to park your car, we could create a pedestrian spine that would activate and link Harwood district together.”

SHAMANDI TOWER
DESIGNING A THRIVING VERTICAL COMMUNITY The concept for Shamandi Tower is specific to the site and unique to Abu Dhabi. In our pursuit, we worked to ensure the comfort and sustainability of the vertical community occupying the tower in the heat of the Gulf sun. The tower takes its form as a response to the particular solar conditions and the shadowing effect of adjacent towers. While the floorplans are consistent and straightforward, the balconies project from each floor in a manner calculated to provide shade for the occupants. The degree of shading at varied sun angles and heights produces a dynamic form for Shamandi Tower. It looks different from every direction: slim and elegant from the street, and shapely from the park. This dynamic form - while made up of only straight lines - conjures the beauty of the curvature of the sail and boom seen on dhows in the nearby Gulf: hence the name “Shamandi.” Indeed, from the luxurious penthouse suites that cap the tower, and are angled towards the harbour to maximize views, these beautiful sailing ships will be visible. Special care has been taken in how Shamandi Tower meets the ground. Facades on each side are recessed, creating a sense of an entrance, while the dynamic lines from the tower form are brought past the podium to the street and park, leading to a continuous vector that conveys the beauty of the tower’s height upon arrival. Custom shading devices at ground level humanize the experience for retail visitors and residents, and provide respite from the sun.

GREENLAND BUND SQUARE
EMBRACING NATURE’S DESIGN Composed of three towers, this mixed-use complex in Shanghai’s Luwan District includes commercial, office, retail, hotel, and highend residential living and amenity spaces. Working closely with the client, we worked on the interior design for the commercial, office, and residential public spaces in addition to the show units and clubhouse. We used locally inspired natural elements as inspiration for the interior designs. Glass tiles, alabaster, and wood veneer are used to create a layered effect and echo the unfolding of a lotus flower. Long vertical panels of black and white marble, translucent and back painted glass, and greenery are used to create the effect of a tall bamboo forest. Large walls are designed to recreate the sense of a stone forest in interior spaces through staggered horizontal white, cream, and black marble slabs complemented with glass tiles.

MOUNTAIN EQUIPMENT CO-OP NORTH VANCOUVER STORE
MATCHING DESIGN TO COMPANY PHILOSOPHY Mountain Equipment Co-op (MEC) in North Vancouver is the result of an extensive interior and exterior retrofit of an existing one storey building plus mezzanine. In keeping with MEC’s philosophy, the remodeled facility was designed with sustainability in mind at every stage. A skylight allows daylight to penetrate the retail area while a tank installed on the roof collects fresh rainwater for use in the toilets, thereby reducing water consumption. MEC products allow the user to wander as effortlessly as possible through the outdoors, allowing them time to focus on nature and not troublesome pieces of outdoor equipment. The interior fit out of the MEC store offers the shopper an equally practical experience. Retail display, signage, and cash functions are conveniently located and readily exhibited in a casual yet efficient manner, so that shoppers can easily find the items they need and move on to their next outdoor adventure.

HERTZ ON AND OFF AIRPORTS LO
REFLECTING THE BRAND APPROACH THROUGH DESIGN In collaboration with branding agency Jackman Reinvents B+H redesigned three of Hertz’s airport locations and 15 of its offairport locations. These 18 initial designs have since served as models for additional refreshed Hertz locations worldwide. As the culmination of a full Hertz rebranding exercise by Jackman Reinvents, Hertz’s new rental facilities needed to reflect the company’s revamped identity and deliver on the promise of a streamlined approach to car rental. Each location’s architecture, fixtures, finishes and signage work together to carry the new Hertz brand into the physical realm and define a consistent, recognizable environment that boosts Hertz’s presence in the market. By abolishing rental counters, the new facilities reshape customer interaction and flow to dramatically improve the rental experience. Selfservice kiosk areas help to alleviate high volumes of customers quickly, while customers who do have to wait are given a pager that lets them know when a kiosk or agent is available. Members now have access to lounges, receive priority service on airport shuttle buses and get to choose from more upgrade options when selecting their vehicle. QUILL CITY MALL
CREATING AN ALTERNATIVE SHOPPING EXPERIENCE Quill City Mall was originally abandoned in the late ’90s. Its columns and slabs were preserved and a new vibrant façade was designed to revitalize the existing structure consisting of cascading terraces under a main roof. Its shell has been converted and transformed to address structural issues, changes in traffic patterns and local requirements after nearly two decades. Located on a major road, the complex was reconstructed to create a missing link between existing infrastructure. The mall offers an alternative shopping experience and is designed as a meeting space to bring people together. Spanning eight floors, the complex offers an exciting mix of retail, dining and entertainment options— including a large supermarket, a 24-lane bowling alley, a ten-theatre cinema, a department store that spans over four levels, an IT mart, food court, restaurants, and a broad range of retailers. A public gathering place hosts regular events and performances, bringing people together and injecting new energy into the community. A large spherical digital media pod that appears to float along the top levels engages patrons with the built space by creating a sense of interest through active graphics and messaging.

PAUL & SHARK HONG KONG FLAGSHIP
INVENTING AN ICON The iconic design concept of façade and interior of the across 3,500 ft2 flagship store blends classic Italian minimalist elegance with contemporary archetypical elements such as steel, wood, glass and leather. Inspired by the rolling waves, the navy blue aluminum sheet patchwork of the façade creates shimmering curves glittering ripples, emphasizing the Paul & Shark logo ahead of the abundance of luxury brands along Canton Road. The main entrance and windows lead the way through vertical blinds of wood and steel, whose double sides offer visual transparency into the store and flexibility for window setting, along with a LED screen on the side showcasing the latest collection. The arches are clad in glass and eucalyptus wood, optimize the existing retail area and divide the space into sections of display shelves. Eucalyptus shelves and back lit translucent glass walls offer a clean palette, keeping the focus on the merchandise. The natural and warm ambience is complemented by a wavy wood feature wall that echoes the exterior blue metal façade. SEPHORA SHANGHAI FLAGSHIP STORE
A DYNAMIC SPACE FOR A VIBRANT CULTURE B+H was engaged to provide the facade design and interior design services for Sephora’s Shanghai flagship retail store, as well as the training centre and China HQ offices. The project involved extensive modification and refurbishment of the existing 64,500 square foot space, comprising the retail store and offices, across five floors. For the retail store, a dramatic red, white and black colour scheme was conceived, with polished acrylic surfaces and dynamic organic shapes, featured throughout. In line with Sephora’s motto of “Excellence, Freedom, Passion & Boldness”, a rainbow of colours was selected to represent a range of emotions. The arrangement of the colours from warm to cool directs people from the north to the south of the space and creates a sense of vitality and dynamism.

DEVELOPING A SHOPPING EXPERIENCE Located on the west section of Chunxi Road – the retail pedestrian street of Chengdu, Nike Chengdu Shop is on GF and 2F of a sports products city. We maximized the vertical portion of the shop entry and highlighted the logo of Nike against the white baked finish background. By combining the product showcases along the long glass shop windows in 2F, our design satisfied the client’s expectation to reflect the image of Nike Chengdu Retail Shop far beyond the store proper. The internal space is wide, open and bright. The customers can observe the panorama of the shop through the presentation platform on GF and the winding internal stair. On 2F, large posters, LED TV and exhibition panels were combined to create the visual focus, which enriches the spatial levels as well as defines the areas of different products.

RIPLEY’S AQUARIUM OF CANADA
DESIGNING JOURNEYS AND EXPERIENCES Located at the base of the CN Tower – the signature icon of Toronto’s skyline – Ripley’s Aquarium of Canada has been carefully designed to complement its location and contribute to the draw of the area. Estimated to attract more than two million visitors annually, the aquarium is equipped to captivate guests of all ages. While thoughtfully choreographed visits lead guests on a journey that inspires and entertains, the facility now also hosts events such as overnight stays, cocktail parties, sit-down dinners, live bands, and yoga. The experience of discovery at the aquarium begins to unfold from its exterior. The faceted face of the building mimics glacial formations sprung from the earth through tectonic shifts, peeling away the land to reveal a window into the aquatic world. As visitors make their way through the exhibits via a guided path, the interior is designed to be fully immersive. Intended to foster a culture of sustainability and conservation of aquatic life and ecosystems through a heightened sense of exploration, visitors are submerged into this water world through pop-up tanks, crawl-through tunnels and domes. To further this sense of absorption in the experience, various design elements are inspired by the marine and aquatic life found in the aquarium such as the use of rhythmic abstract patterns mimicking the movement of jellyfish. The construction of the aquarium required great technical acuity. One of its most complex components was the Life Support System for the tanks, which cleans and recycles nearly all the water for the aquatic habitats, ensuring usage within the building remains low. All interior materials and finishes were thoughtfully selected with corrosion-resistance in mind to mitigate the higher than usual humidity resulting from the large volume of salt water used. Finally, lighting also posed a large consideration as natural daylight can cause algae growth and impair viewing through glare on glass exhibits. Daylight was carefully balanced with absolute light control where necessary.

NIAGARA FALLSVIEW CASINO RESORT
ROARING WATER AND RACING PULSES The gracious, effervescent spirit of the Belle Epoque inspired Canada’s largest and most elegant gaming resort facility. Overlooking Niagara Falls from a prominent site on Murray Hill, the $1-billion Niagara Fallsview Casino Resort features a 200,000-ft2 casino with more than 3,000 slot machines, 130 gaming tables, and a high-end gaming area, all on one of the world’s largest gaming floors. The Fallsview complex also encompasses a 30-storey hotel tower with 368 rooms and suites; a 15,000-ft2 health and fitness spa; exhibition/meeting facilities including a 28,320-ft2 Grand Hall; a shopping galleria; 10 dining venues plus a food court; the 1,500-seat Avalon Ballroom Theatre; and a parking garage with space for 3,000 cars. While most of the resort translates the elegance of a bygone era into materials and structural systems that are clearly of our own time, the Fallsview also preserves part of the architectural heritage of Niagara Falls: the casino incorporates a portion of the 1904 façade of the electricity distributing facility that formerly occupied the site.
