PUBLIC REALM AND CIVIC NODES: Void – O – Mega Reimagining the Stadium and its Prescient to be a Democratic, Public, Civic Space.
Case of Ahmedabad City and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Stadium. This thesis forays into understanding the public realm and aims to unpack the various kinds of spaces formed in the public realm, on the basis of how they are manifested, their functions, characteristics and understanding their spatial and programmatic nature. These understandings would then inform in establishing a framework for designing a Public space project which can be applied at a relevant site. The thesis looks at public space design as a tool to revive an urban void site, in this case, an underutilized old stadium complex i.e. The Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Stadium, Ahmedabad. By rethinking its general functions, integrating new programs, using adaptiv reuse techniques and integrating the public space components at the site to make the stadium complex more meaning full to the everyday urban life of the city and its citizens. Bringing together multiple agencies to transform the past single-use stadium to a whole new array of facilities transforming it into “A Place of many Places” and perform as a Public Civic Space.
