1920’s

Ø The Roaring Twenties is the post-world war phase, which brought about several novel and highly visible social and cultural trends. These trends, made possible by sustained economic prosperity, were most visible in major cities like New York, Chicago, Paris, Berlin and London. Ø “Normalcy” returned to politics in the wake of hyper-emotional patriotism during World War I, jazz blossomed, and Art Deco peaked. For women, knee-length skirts and dresses became socially acceptable, as did bobbed hair with a marcel wave. The women who pioneered these trends were frequently referred to as flappers.

Ø After World War I, the fashion landscape shifted like tectonic plates. Ø Once reserved for aristocrats and the affluent, high fashion had taken a noticeably more attainable turn, allowing middle class men and women in on the fun. Ø Some luxurious textiles were finally affordable, making it possible for fashionable items to be created at home. Ø Designers like Paul Poiret, the self-proclaimed, "King of Fashion," was a Parisian of refined style and taste. Ø Poiret lived and breathed fashion and with his elegant designs he set forth to change the way the "modern woman" was seen in society. Ø It's said Poiret "waged war" on the corset because of the way it divided a woman's body into two halves.

Style

Ø In the 1920s it was still quite common for clothes to be handmade. Ø The shape of the silhouette was strikingly straight and flat while most fashions accentuated the figure in some way or another. This straight shape is a very distinct element of 1920s style. Ø The 1920s fashion of loose fitting waist lines, short hemlines, and simple breathable fabrics, reflects an easing up of the male domination of the female look. Ø It was at this point that women, en masse, began riding bicycles, exercising, dancing, socializing, and playing sports along with the other behaviors women are known for in the 1920s.

Clothing: Ă˜ It was the decade in which women first abandoned the more restricting fashions of past years and began to wear more comfortable clothes (such as short skirts or trousers). Ă˜ Men also abandoned highly formal daily attire and even began to wear athletic clothing for the first time. Ă˜ Knee-length dress worn with anklets. Young boys wore sailor 1920 suits or trousers.

Trends

Hats & Headwear Headwear was a vital part of the fashionable woman’s outfit. There several styles seen, some styled almost like bonnets, while others were very close fitting, called Felt Helmets. Many hats were adorned with silk roses, ribbons, buckles, pins, feathers and more.

Coats & Outerwear Coats were usually made of somewhat subdued colors, browns and dark blues, and were often covered with large buttons. Furs and fur trimming was wildly popular.

Sweaters Wool sweaters were very popular throughout the 1920s. They came in various colors, but maroon and navy were very popular choices. Some had buttons down the front, others had belts and wide collars. Cardigans were in high demand.

Drop-Waist Dress Like a column, 1920s dresses were made straight up and down and loose, with little emphasis on a woman’s curves. Waistlines were dropped low and lengthened women’s torsos. The silhouette is comfortable and ultra flattering on thin and boyish frames. Flapper Dress Typical flapper dresses weren’t only covered in. Real flapper dresses were beaded, sparkly, luminous and let a gal freely kick and dance without hiking up her skirt.

Beads and Pearls Long strings of pearls were the go-to accessory in the 1920s. Layered or doubled-up, long strings of beads and pearls look youthful and fun even today, and the short strings of ladylike pearls. Beaded Purse Purses from the 1920s are like works of art, with their intricate beading, delicate chain handles, fringe and metalwork. They’re typically small so they make the best night-on-the-town bags.
