can designers consistently create powerful, resonate projects that connect with themselves and their audience by integrating the craft of
story and storytelling into design methodology?
BACKGROUND: Stories are a part of human nature; they are instinctual for navigating information and developing conclusions from a simulated experience (Gottschall, 2012). Often, story and storytelling reveals new connections between information previously unseen by both author and reader (Weiland, 2011). PROBLEM: Currently, designers use story as a form of communication during the final stages of a project. Ideas, designs, and recommendations are usually proposed through presentations that are meant to persuade the audience. Although design states the use of story as a meta-framework, there are no clear directives of how to incorporate the discipline throughout each phase. OPPORTUNITY: By integrating the craft of story into design methodology, designers can simulate the story experience and better weave information, develop deeper insights, and create stronger connections to design projects.
THESIS TOPICS:
Story and Storytelling meaningful creation
Design Methodology
guidance & wisdom
human centered design
Human Needs
RESEARCH QUESTIONS: 1 How has story and storytelling enabled the human condition? 2 How has design methodology emerged and evolved? 3 What does integrating the craft of story and storytelling into design methodology (including principles, practices, and procedures) mean for the discipline of design?
