Classic Hikes Continued ... 1. Overlook Trail TRAILHEAD: Base of Beaver Creek Mountain 3.5 MILES (ONE WAY) Find this trail at the base of Beaver Creek near the Centennial Express Lift to hike your way into aspen and pine trees. The trail is a 2,000-foot uphill challenge with some switchbacks that help moderate some of the ascent. Toward the top, hikers are rewarded with views of the ski resort and peaks in the Sawatch Range. Upon arrival at Spruce Saddle Lodge, hikers can stop for a bite to eat or a drink. The hike back down is optional — you can save your knees and some time by jumping in a gondola car on the Centennial Express Chairlift (dog-friendly on the way down) for a free ride back to the village (weather permitting). Make sure the chairlift is open that day before counting on a ride down. 2. Piney River Falls TRAILHEAD: Lower Piney River Trailhead at Piney River Ranch 6 MILES ROUNDTRIP Head out of the valley for one of the most beautiful destinations in the state that can be accessed by a car (with high clearance). Drive up to Piney Lake, located 11 miles out of town from Red Sandstone Road, and park at the trailhead to start out on this six-mile trip to the falls and back. The trail stays along Piney Lake, then heads into an open meadow and up into the forest. At every fork, stay right, and once you reach an overlook point looking back at the valley and the lake, you’re about 15 minutes from the falls. 3. Whitney Lake TRAILHEAD: South of Minturn, about five miles up Homestake Road #703 5 MILES ROUNDTRIP From the small parking area on the left across the road from the trailhead, the trail will take you almost three miles uphill, gaining nearly 2,000 feet in elevation. It winds up steeply through aspen and conifer groves, offering views of the Sawatch Range. Cross Whitney Creek on four large rocks, and then onward for about three-quarters of a mile to the lake. Whitney Peak rises up from the north lake shore to an elevation of 13,271 feet.

Smoking Bird ROOT & FLOWER — VAIL VILLAGE Ingredients 1 oz. Blanco Tequila 1 oz. Mezcal .75 oz. Campari or Contratto Bitter 1.5 oz Pineapple Shrub .5 oz. Lemon Juice Shake it thoroughly with ice and strain over new ice. Garnish with a pineapple wedge.

Summer Gin CRAFTSMAN — EDWARDS Ingredients 2 oz. Gin (something citrusy and floral like Plymouth or Barr Hill) 1 oz. Fresh Lime Juice 1/2 oz. of Simple Syrup 1/2oz Domain de Canton Ginger Liqueur Shake all the ingredients hard until the mixture is nice and cold. Pour the contents into a tall glass and top with Dry cucumber soda. Garnish with a few peeled cucumber slices.

A Transformation in Beaver Creek Beaver Creek Lodge #605 was redone by Coleman Custom Homes. Alex Coleman was the builder and Burke Larson was the project manager, with interior finishes and fixtures completed by Victoria Jones, owner and lead interior designer of Studio-James.

Luxury finishes were put in throughout the four-bedroom penthouse residence. From the master bath to the powder room, guest bathroom and loft bath, custom floating cabinets and vanities are included from Elegant Cabinetry. Countertops were done by Caesarstone, along with plumbing fixtures from Kohler and Kallista. In the kitchen, modern cabinetry from Elegant Cabinetry has a pointed finish with tonal contrast, paired with Caesarstone quartz countertops. A Brizo articulating faucet stands over a stainless steel Kohler single basin sink, along with Sub-Zero, Asko and Wolf top-of-the-line appliances. The fireplace in the living room was constructed of Colorado blue stone and steel surround with a concrete hearth, and a 50-inch linear Ortal insert. A custom steel and glass railing with steel stringers was designed for the staircase in the home, complete with white oak treads and risers. Custom colored, European white oak wide plant flooring with an oiled finish was used throughout, and solid core cherry doors with a custom reactive stain were put it with solid bronze door hardware from Omnia. The carpet in all the bedrooms is 100 percent pure new wool, and custom built-in bunk beds were also designed for the kids’ room. Currently listed for sale, see page 26. page 23

Mountain Gardening Continued ... It’s important to choose plants that prefer a shorter growing season and colder climate. With veggies and herbs, start warm season seeds — broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, brussel sprouts, peas — inside, or buy small veggie starts that are ready to go into the ground. Certain flowers can go outside if they are “hardened off,” or accustomed to the cold temperatures and can withstand 20 degree temperatures. It’s also helpful to choose crops with fewer days to mature, typically between 30 to 70 days. Check your seed packets for this information. With container gardens, think about sun exposure, access to water, and always use a healthy, organic soil amended with compost. Maximize the size and color by fertilizing with a biological fertilizer. Cold loving, short season vegetables that prefer a mountainous growing climate include radishes, beets, carrots, snap peas, rhubarb and swiss chard, along with all of your greens including spinach, kale and lettuce. Mint, thyme, cilantro, chives and rosemary grow great in containers and can be moved inside for winter. For flowers, try pansies, petunias, alyssum, lobelia, dianthus, daisies and geraniums. Your local plant nurseries can be a great resource when you’re looking for annual and perennial flowers. Native perennials that thrive in the area include columbine, penstemon, flax, harebell, forget-me-not, and yarrow.
