MONTANA’S WILD PLACES CENTENNIAL VALLEY According to The Nature Conservancy, “The Centennial looks very much as it did more than a century ago.”

Don Pilotte

broker, gri, rrs, sfr

(406) 580.0155

This broad east-west valley is home to extensive wetlands, in fact, it is the largest wetland in the entire Yellowstone Ecosystem. Two large lakes, the Upper and Lower Red Rock Lakes dominate much of the valley. Situated just north of the 10,000 foot Centennial Mountain Range separating Montana from Idaho, a rough 51 mile seasonal dirt road winds its way between Henry’s Lake, Idaho and Lima, Montana and provides the best access to the valley. Of the approximately 385,000 acres in the valley, only about 100,000 acres are privately held, and much of that land is protected by conservation easements. About 90% of this private land is controlled by 15 large ranches. Home to less than 100 people in the summer (far less in the winter) cattle far outnumber people in the valley. The 45,000 acre Red Rock Lakes National Refuge was established in 1935 and is home to over 241 bird species. At a wide spot in the road is Lakeview, Montana, the headquarters of the refuge and a great spot to stop and get first-hand information on this remote and beautiful area.

BOB MARSHALL WILDERNESS “The Bob” is the fifth largest wilderness in the lower 48 and home to some of the wildest back country in the country. Almost 2,000 miles of trails, traveled only on foot or by stock carefully lace their way through spectacular rock formations, such as the Chinese wall, which averages 1,000 vertical feet and stretches out about 22 miles in length. Established by the Wilderness Act of 1964, this is the wilderness by which all others are measured. Alpine lakes, waterfalls and dense old-growth forests punctuate the landscape between some of the most dramatic mountains, ridges and outcroppings anywhere in the country. The Bob Marshall is also well known for its wildlife, particularly big game such as; moose, elk, mountain lion, wolverine, big horn sheep, black bear and grizzly bear – the US Forest Service believes that the grizzly population is higher here, than in any other place in the country outside of Alaska.

ABSAROKA BEARTOOTH WILDERNESS Located along the northern border of Yellowstone Park, the Absaroka Beartooth Wilderness contains the highest peaks in Montana, among which is Granite Peak, at 12,799 feet and one of the highest points in Montana. The wilderness is composed to two distinct mountain ranges – the Absaroka Range rises to the east of the Paradise Valley, south of Livingston, while the Beartooth Range is west and south of Red Lodge Montana. The Absaroka’s are primarily steep volcanic and metamorphic mountains with imposing ridges and deep valleys while the Beartooths are more like alpine plateaus laced with lakes. Over 700 miles of trails are located in this wilderness along with hundreds of lakes providing some of the best alpine hiking and fishing anywhere in the entire world.

Rules of the Road when passing horseback parties and livestock by Rod Freeman

An issue that is important for all drivers of any vehicle on Montana roads, particularly on more private county roads that connect ranches and pastures in this great state, is how to safely and with courtesy, approach horse-back riders and livestock sharing these same roads. I ride our roads periodically and am often astonished with the lack of either courtesy or knowledge of the potential for a major incident involving either riders or livestock by drivers in general. As I planned this article, I searched for a specific Montana highway law addressing this subject and have not found one to date. I did find this quotation of Rule 214 published in the UK: “When passing animals, drive slowly. Give them plenty of room and prepare to stop. Do not scare animals by sounding your horn, revving your engine, or accelerating rapidly once you have passed them. Look out for animals being led, driven, or ridden on the road and take extra care. Keep your speed down at bends and on narrow country roads. If a road is blocked by a herd of animals, stop, and switch off your engine until they have left the road. Watch out for animals on unfenced roads.” When approaching a horse back rider in a vehicle, it is important to understand that the horse is a flight animal by nature and that a driver can never assume that the rider of the horse is competent or that the horse has been properly schooled to react without fear to an approaching vehicle, particularly one approaching at a high speed. A frightened horse can respond in numerous ways that could and often does result in the rider being thrown and injured, or worst case, jumping into the path of the approaching vehicle, which can and does result in death or serious injury to the rider, the horse or the occupants of the vehicle. When approaching a horseback rider slow your vehicle down to no more than 15 miles per hour and never honk your horn or create any unusual noises. When approaching livestock, particularly livestock being moved on a rural Montana road, stop your vehicle and turn off your engine until the livestock has passed if the herd is approaching you and do not attempt to pass livestock moving away from you until signaled to do so by the individuals in charge of the herd. The herders will signal where in the road it is safe to pass, if at all. Herders that are horse back and the livestock are all subject to injure themselves or you and your car or both. It is common for ranchers and farmers to move their livestock from between pastures on our Montana rural roads, so treat them with courtesy and respect for the safety of all.

History and Facts on Branding Livestock in Montana by Michelle Van Dyke

In Montana, we rerecord livestock brands every 10 years and next year 2021, is your due date with the Montana Department of Livestock to rerecord your brand. With that in mind thought it might be of interest to know the history behind the brand. Since the practice of branding cattle is ancient. What we know of the earliest livestock brands comes from paintings in Egyptian tombs, which depict a cattle roundup and branding from as early as 2700 BC. When we fast forward to Montana history we start our branding history in February 1865 when the first Montana Territorial Legislature passed "An Act concerning marks and brands" which barred two people from using the same brand in any one county and required the registering of all brands with the county clerk. Brand registration was made a territory-wide requirement in 1872, under the Clerk of the Supreme Court. Beginning in 1877, registration was handled by the State Treasurer. Under the executive reorganization of 1971, the Department of Livestock became the administrative arm of the Livestock Commission and the Livestock Sanitary Board. The functions of the Recorder of Marks and Brands were taken over by the new Brands Enforcement Division. Brand reading is an art form that almost requires the reader to be fluent in a language of its own. Brands, however, like books are read from top to bottom and left to right. In branding terminology, a leaning letter or character is “tumbling,” while in a horizontal position it’s being “lazy.” Short curved strokes or wings added at the top of the letter R, for example, make it a “Flying R.” The addition of short bars at the bottom of a symbol makes it “walking,” and changing angular lines into curved lines makes a brand “running.” Half-circles, quarter-circles, and triangles were frequently used in late-nineteenth-century brands. An open triangle was called a “rafter” and if a letter rested in a quarter-circle it was said to be “rocking.” There were also “bars,” “stripes,” “rails,” and “slashes” that differed only in length and angle. Essentially, the creativity or simplicity of a brand is matched only by the creativity or desired simplicity of the brand’s owner. Today, many ranchers still utilize cattle branding to mark their stock, much as they did in the 1800s. It’s part of the rich history and culture of the cattle ranching way of life. Advancements in cattle branding include the use of an electric brander where the metal is heated with electricity rather than with fire. Some ranchers may rely solely on ear tags to identify individual animals and to prove ownership. However, ear tags are said to have the drawbacks of getting lost by the animal’s movement or being removed and replaced by thieves. In many states, including Montana, branded livestock must be registered in the respective county where they are run. In addition to marking livestock, brands represent the trademark of a ranching family and therefore also represent pride, duty and stewardship, which inspires loyalty and dedication. Many cowboys still refer to “riding for the brand” to represent their commitment to their employer. We’re riding for the Montana Ranch Properties Brand, so give us a shout for your real estate needs and we’ll rustle you something up to put your brand on.
