The Madison Valley is located at the heart of Montana’s recreational opportunities and majestic mountain beauty (the Madison’s, the Tobacco Roots, and the Gravellys). The Ruby Valley is rich in history and natural resources. Surrounded by seven game filled mountain ranges and bisected by four major blue ribbon trout streams, its wide-open spaces and amazing vistas are a testament to this area as Big Sky Country. The Ruby Valley was a defining destination for Lewis and Clark and the Corps of Discovery in the early 1800’s. While camped near what is now known as Twin Bridges in August, 1805, Sacajawea, the Indian maiden traveling with the Corps recognized a prominent Rock Outcropping to the South as the place where her people, the Shoshones, were hunting when she was kidnapped as a child several years earlier. Later she and the Corps met her brother Chief Cameahwait there and were provided horses to complete their journey to the Pacific Coast. In later years the lure of gold and the rich soils and plentiful water brought miners and homesteaders here leading to the establishment of the towns that are modestly changed today. The Ruby Valley comprises the area from Whitehall south to Beaverhead Rock towards Dillon and from Twin Bridges Southeast through Sheridan, Laurin, Alder and the gold rush towns of Nevada and Virginia Cities. This area offers a safe and warm embrace to retirees and growing families alike. Like other southwest Montana areas, its population is growing, but at a pace barely noticeable from census records. The Ruby Valley is fashionably quaint, and its residents are fiercely loyal. Quite simply, it is among the best of Montana’s last best places. Given this high level of desirability, the pool of available residential listings is limited. Residents do not want to leave once they move here, and the trend among younger families is to put down roots in the area. Properly priced residential offerings do not last long.
