Portland Jewish Academy Annual Report 2013 - 2014
Our Mission Our mission is to ensure an academically excellent environment in which children thrive. Portland Jewish Academy nurtures and inspires positive Jewish engagement, respect for human and religious differences, and responsibility for the world in which we live.
August 2014 Av 5774
Dear Friends of PJA, We are delighted to share the Portland Jewish Academy’s annual report for the 2013-14/5774 school year with you. This report celebrates our accomplishments and presents a snapshot of the school’s health and well-being, in addition to illustrating our stewardship of contributions and parent-provided tuition. We have created this report as a way to thank you, our parents, neighbors and friends for your generosity. Your contributions to our school make a very real impact on the day-to-day lives of our students. Last year, for the first time in PJA’s history, we began bus service to the eastside. We have approximately 15 families using the bus to and from PJA in the morning and at the end of the school day. We have stops in both NE and SE Portland for PJA day school. We also pick up and drop off students at another local independent school. It is a dream realized and we are grateful to our persevering parents who really spearheaded this effort and to our PJA Board of Directors for helping to fund the use of the bus. This report has been designed not only to give you the data which shows our financial health and stability, but also to reflect our school’s vibrancy and warmth, things that truly set us apart. One distinctive aspect of life at PJA is how our middot – values, guide our daily learning experience and are woven into all that we do.
Limmud – Study Akharayut – Responsibility Hodayah – Appreciation
Kavod – Respect Kehillah – Community Zehut – Jewish identity
These middot are intentionally integrated into every part of PJA, and help to deepen the experiences and relationships we have here. Our students are engaged in acts of chesed – kindness, every day at PJA and our service-learning program has grown tremendously over the years to include a deep and thoughtful capstone project during students’ 8th grade year, which involves research in both Jewish and general studies, as well as a service project. The middot are used in this report as a way to showcase our achievements over the past year. We are honored to be your partners in educating our community’s youth. Together we help raise children who think for themselves and work for the world. B’shalom,
Barry Benson & Bob Philip Co-Presidents, Board of Directors
Beth Germain Interim Executive Director
Merrill Hendin Principal
10 Reasons to support PJA
1
THINK FOR yourself. work for the world.
More than just our slogan! PJA’s commitment to teaching students to think for themselves and work for the world is evident in our classrooms and in our commitment to service. Our mission is to ensure an academically excellent environment in which children thrive. PJA inspires positive Jewish engagement, respect for differences, and responsibility for our world.
3
Jewish Identity Jewish Studies and Hebrew language encourage critical thinking and bring a richness and ethical foundation that is unparalleled.
2
Community
Community takes many forms – our warm parent community, dedicated faculty, the MJCC and our broader community. We gather to celebrate good times and commemorate difficult times together. We enjoy the arts, the outdoors, and give back to our community.
4
Respect
Our “Kavod LOOP” encapsulates respect – for learning, for ourselves, for others and for property. Staff model behavior for our students and for each other. When PJA students and graduates go into the world, they are mensches. Field trip chaperones and museum docents often remark that ours was the best group they’ve ever had!
5
Study
Students graduate from PJA with exceptionally good critical thinking, writing, science and math skills, and are successful in high school and beyond.
“
6
My kids really had a great year at PJA. I feel so happy that I moved my son here this year. The school is really a good fit for both of my boys. This was the first year that I remember that my son didn’t complain (not even one day) about going to school in the morning. - PJA Parent, Jill Ory
”
Responsibility
7
Responsibility for the world is a key value at PJA. Our students don’t just learn about responsibility in the abstract: they practice it in the classroom and outside the school’s walls.
“

Five years ago we came to PJA with a 4th grade boy in tow and we now leave with an 8th grade man. We have watched in awe as you have helped shape our son into a thoughtful and critical thinker; with the mind of an engineer and the heart of a poet. We’ve watched him grow in leadership skills in the classroom and develop a wonderful cadre of friends. You have all nurtured, inspired, challenged and nudged our son for five remarkable years.
”
“
We give to PJA because we love watching our two sons become young mensches who are curious and thrilled to learn about the world around them - we want other families to have the same opportunity, too.

Appreciation Appreciation is expressed openly at PJA every day. Not only do we appreciate our many donors and supporters who sustain our school, we also appreciate the small gestures that make our school a warm and welcoming community. Todah rabbah (thank you!) is a staple of life at PJA.
