Dear Friends, The Mittleman Jewish Community Center has a new look, and we couldn’t be more excited! This change reflects our fresh approach to programming, our commitment to serve you better, and our affiliation with the Jewish Community Center Association of North America (JCCA). The new look and feel of this Program Guide – as well as our other print and on-line materials – reflects our adoption of the JCCA’s new brand. This brand helps to connect our community with those of other JCC’s around the continent. The JCCA’s new brand is the result of a great deal of research and work. The “Element J” is inter-connected with other elements that come together to form a complex whole, and the images used are reminiscent of the periodic table. The elements represent all that is part of the MJCC – from fitness, aquatics and therapy pool classes to Jewish celebrations, arts and culture programs and rentals. As part of our re-branding initiative, we have undertaken a variety of associated projects. Check out our all-new website at oregonjcc.org! Not only have we changed the look, but we have greatly enhanced the functionality of the site, and we’ve gone to a responsive format that will work on all of your portable devices. We’ve restructured our program guide, developed an all-new membership packet, updated our membership handbook and purchased some cool swag, including frisbees, t-shirts and pens. Moreover, the JCCA offers us far more than a new brand. We now have the opportunity to provide exclusive JCCA programs, such as the JCC Maccabi
Games and ArtsFest. These exciting summer programs bring together athletes and artists, ages 13 - 16, at several locations around the country, for a powerful, Jewish communal experience. Look for more information this fall. In addition, as a member of the MJCC, you can use hundreds of other JCCs around the country through the JCCA’s reciprocity agreements. The JCCA also provides tremendous opportunities for the MJCC staff. This summer, we’ve worked with JCCA Day Camp consultants to review our camp program and identify opportunities to broaden our offerings. We’re already excited about many of the new initiatives we have in store for next summer! We’ve also worked with consultants to develop engaging programming in the cultural arts. Some of this is focused on “Israel – Beyond the Conflict,” and I urge you to join us for our 2nd Annual Israel Film Festival, beginning October 13. Other new cultural programs will include a spring author series and new activities for young adults. We are always looking for ways to serve our community better, and we hope you like our new look as much as we do. We look forward to your feedback and to seeing you each time you find yourself at the J. Warm regards,
Steve Albert Executive Director

Swim Lessons Swim Assessment (ages 12 and under)
The MJCC aquatics department is dedicated to teaching children to swim and stay safe in our pools. We have an outstanding aquatic facility that allows kids to enjoy the water safely under the close supervision of certified lifeguards. We require a swim assessment for each child under the age of 12. The swim assessment consists of swimming the length of the pool with arm strokes, climbing out, jumping back in, and swimming backstroke the length of the pool. Please contact our aquatics department for any questions regarding swim assessments. If you are unable to pass the swim assessment, you will be required to wear a life jacket. Although the MJCC offers class levels such as Angelfish and Blowfish together, we teach to each child’s ability. (See page 7 for swim lesson levels.) On occasion, we split or combine the classes based on skill level.
Please refer to pool schedules at oregonjcc.org/pools for weekly lap, open recreational swim, adults-only swim and program times.
Pool Accessibility Lift
The MJCC Aquatic Center has two accessibility lifts for those patrons who need assistance getting into and out of the pools. Our main pool lift is self-operated and has a weight capacity of 300 pounds. Our warm water pool lift is operated by our staff and has a weight limit of 250 pounds.

Join us in the Warm Water Pool with pool toys, music and good times! *Parents must accompany children in the water. Ages 6 yrs + under Sunday, October 25 3:00 - 5:30 pm Cost: $15 per family. Member Cost: free.

Swim Lessons Auto-Enroll Swim lesson registration is easier and more convenient than ever! Enroll in the fall and your child will be automatically enrolled through the spring. There is no auto-enroll in the summer. • Once you register for the first time, you never have to reregister for as long as your child remains enrolled. • Once you enroll and choose a method of payment, fees are automatically charged two weeks prior to the start of a new session.
• As long as a student remains enrolled in a level, they keep their day and lesson time until they move to the next level. • Be sure to check the auto-enroll box on your next activity registration form.

How You Can Help
Numerous Ways to Give
MJCC is a nonprofit organization that exists and thrives due to the generous support of the community. Membership, program fees and rentals account for approximately 86% of our annual revenue with donations making up the remainder. Contributions fund capital improvements, additional programming, and scholarships for memberships and day camp, so that nobody is turned away for inability to pay.
Each year, our annual campaign provides an opportunity for members to support the MJCC with gifts, large and small. Our “Roots and Rafters” campaign is currently in progress, raising money for important facility upgrades, and EVERY GIFT IS MATCHED DOLLAR FOR DOLLAR! We also encourage you to consider joining our Legacy Society by including a bequest to the MJCC in your estate plan. If you are interested in supporting the MJCC, contact us at 503.244.0111
MJCC Legacy Society Mittleman Jewish Community Center created the Friends of the Center Legacy Society last year to recognize those who have taken the extraordinary step to include MJCC in their estate plan. We are extremely grateful to the following individuals who are members of the Friends of the Center Legacy Society: Bruce Abrams Stacy Barna Barry and Karla Benson Gerel Blauer Milton Carl Edith Dorsen Jenat and Howard Feldman John and Beth Germain Robert E. Glasgow and Lesley G. Glasgow Jonathan and Sarah Glass Lisa Katon and Noah Kressel Tony and Priscilla Kostiner
Jordana and Ryan Levenick Howard Liebreich Gail Mandel Robert and Rita Philip Gayle Romain Steve Rosenberg and Ellen Lippman Jerry and Bunny Sadis Andrea Sanchez and Benjamin Drucker Gary and Linda Singer Adrienne Stenger z’l Ken and Jennifer Zeidman Jason Zidell
We would like to ask each and every one of you to consider including Mittleman Jewish Community Center in your estate plan. By joining our Friends of the Center Legacy Society you can assure that MJCC will continue to be a vital and central hub filling current and future needs of the Jewish community for centuries to come. If you have included MJCC in your estate plan, we would like to know so that we can recognize you properly (although you can remain anonymous if you wish). If you want to notify us that you are already included or you would like more information on your options for helping to assure our future through your estate, you may contact Steve Albert, Executive Director at salbert@oregonjcc.org or 503.244.0111.
