WELCOME

Dear Friends,

It’s fall, and we’re excited to share our new program guide with a growing variety of offerings and some wonderful new opportunities.

We continue to focus on the implementation of our new strategic plan with a growing emphasis on programs for youth and young families. (You can find our strategic plan online at oregonjcc.org/strategicplan.) Our Youth Programs Department is now offering pickleball, volleyball, and flag football, through Skyhawks Sports Academy, all of which are new programs for the MJCC. See page 10 - 11.

On October 25, we are thrilled to present theatre dybbuk’s workshop, One Community, Many Stories. theatre dybbuk, a Los Angeles-based performing arts company, explores Jewish thought through provocative performances and innovative educational encounters. This remarkable workshop, for participants ages 11 and up, creates a communal experience through creative writing, personal storytelling, and performance. See page seven.

Thanks to a grant from the Women’s Giving Circle of the Jewish Federation of Greater Portland, we are pleased to provide self-defense workshops and classes for girls, women, and women-identifying There will be two workshops, one for youth and one for adults. We will follow-up these workshops with a class that will take place over three evenings. See page six for details.

On the heels of this summer’s sold-out Drag Queen Bingo event, we’re delighted to bring back Poison Waters, along with some of her friends, for a fun-filled, familyfriendly bingo event in November. See page seven. We’ve also partnered with Keshet, a national organization that works for the full equality of LGBTQ+ Jews in Jewish life, to offer a training program for our community, via Zoom, on October 11. This community training will allow participants to:

• Identify and understand the core terms and concepts related to LGBTQ+ identities;

• Make connections between LGBTQ+ equality and Jewish values;

• Understand the importance of building explicitly LGBTQ+ affirming communities;

• Identify ways that all community members can be part of building LGBTQ+ affirming culture. See page seven.

As the weather turns cooler and wetter, we want to be sure you have options to stay fit! Elliott Saunders will be offering a beginning pickleball clinic in October for those interested in learning the basics of America’s fastest-growing sport. See page 13. And to motivate you to expand your workout routine, we are launching our Fall into Fitness promotion for members. Participants are eligible to win MJCC swag and a grand prize of a one-hour massage! See page 16.

I hope you’ll check out the events noted above along with other programs described throughout this guide. See you at the J!

SUPPORT THE MJCC!

Your support allows us to enrich lives, build community, and inspire Jewish journeys.

The Mittleman Jewish Community Center is the home away from home for thousands of individuals and families in the Portland area.

As a nonprofit, we rely on gifts above and beyond membership dues. Membership, program fees and rentals account for only 86% of our annual revenue, and we are dependent upon donations and grants to make up the difference.

Your gift of any size is needed and appreciated.

Your generous tax-deductible donation to the MJCC supports:

• New equipment in our fitness center, gymnasium and studios;

• Expanded programming for youth and young families - our key strategic priorities in our new strategic plan;

• Cultural and holiday programming that puts the “Jewish” in MJCC;

• Need-based financial assistance for membership and Day Camp to ensure that no one is ever turned away due to an inability to pay; and

• Competitive salaries to retain staff and trainers that are the face of the JCC.

Over the years, our programs and services have evolved and expanded, but our mission remains unchanged - to be an inclusive and welcoming hub for a diverse community, fostering lifelong wellness and providing dynamic social and educational experiences, grounded in Jewish values and culture

Ways to support the J:

• Donate $360 or more to the J’s Annual Campaign and become a member of “The Friends of the Center Society.” Members receive invitations to exclusive events and programs throughout the year;

• Donate appreciated stock or a minimum retirement distribution and avoid capital gains tax (please discuss with your tax professional);

• Become a Sustaining Member for $1800/year (tax deduction depends on your membership cost);

• Add a monthly donation to your membership; and

• Join the MJCC Legacy Society. You can support the JCC with an afterlife gift from your will, trust, retirement plan, IRA, or life insurance policy.

Thank you for your support of the Mittleman Jewish Community Center. Donate at oregonjcc.org/donate.

For more information about how you can support the J, please contact Bess Butterworth at bbutterworth@oregonjcc.org

MJCC Legacy Society

This group of dedicated community members have made the extraordinary commitment to remember the MJCC with a gift in their will, trust, retirement account, or life insurance policy. We are deeply grateful to these individuals for their support to ensure the long-term sustainability of our Center. Interested in becoming a Legacy Society member? MJCC INFO

Statement of Non-Discrimination

The Mittleman Jewish Community Center (MJCC) assures that no person shall be discriminated against because of race, color, creed, sex, age, national origin, sexual orientation, gender identity, marital status, religion, political affiliation, veteran status, physical, sensory or mental disability, familial status, or any other reasons protected under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Civil Rights Restoration Act of 1987, section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act. No person shall be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be otherwise subjected to discrimination under any program or activity for which they are otherwise eligible.

JCCA Membership Perk

As a member of JCCA, the Mittleman Jewish Community Center enjoys many perks. One perk is mutual reciprocation with membership at other JCCA member facilities. The MJCC welcomes all out-oftown JCC members for a maximum of 14 non-consecutive days per calendar year. After 14 days, we have a special offer of $12 per day per person. Members of the MJCC will enjoy reciprocal membership at other JCCA facilities according to that location’s specific policy. Make sure to bring your member ID card!
