WELCOME
Dear Friends,
We are very excited about the wide range of special offerings that we have lined up for this fall! Whether you are looking for opportunities to learn, socialize, celebrate, volunteer, or immerse yourself in arts and culture, we have programs to meet your needs.
On September 22, Portland Chamber Music will present “Bright Voices of the Darkest Hour: Music and the Holocaust.” This program will provide a beautiful opportunity to consider the Holocaust through the lens of music. Also in September, our partnership with Third Rail Theatre continues with more screenings from National Theatre Live! See page six for details.
October brings the Jewish holidays this year. On October 20, join us to celebrate Sukkot with our annual family program, Pizza in the Hut. We’ll also be presenting Drag Queen Bingo from 4:00 - 5:30 pm. Join us for this fun, family event, rescheduled from our Pride Month programs.
Then it’s prom night! On October 27, from 1:00 - 4:00 pm, we’ll be partnering with JFCS to present our second Annual Schmoozapalooza, “A Prom for Seniors 60 and Better.” Boogie in style with friends old and new for a celebratory afternoon. Light kosher refreshments are included. This is a free event, but RSVP’s will be required. See page seven for more information.
Rose City Self-Defense is back this fall. Classes will take place on Monday evenings in October and are free to all community members. More information on page seven.
We are excited to get our new volunteer program in full swing! Join us on November 14 for our Volunteering Service Learning Program TZEDEK, for a meaningful day and to learn more about volunteer opportunities at the MJCC! We’ll be celebrating the arts in November with our ORA Exhibition. This fall’s exhibition will showcase artists from the Mikvah Project and will last throughout the month.
A reminder that our pool closure will take place from August 31 to September 15 this year. That’s slightly later than usual. This closure provides an opportunity for the MJCC to undertake important maintenance, repair, and upgrade projects to improve your aquatics experience.
Finally, don’t forget to check our online store (oregonjcc.org/store) to purchase the latest in MJCC swag!
We’re very excited about all of these special events as well as the programs, activities, and services described throughout the Fall Program Guide. We look forward to seeing you when you “Find Yourself at the J!”

MJCC is the administrator of PJ Library
Reading to your children has shown its impact on a child’s development. Even the mere presence of books in a home increases the level of education they can reach.
PJ Library sends free, award-winning books that celebrate Jewish values and culture to families with children from birth through 12 years old. Something magical happens when
parents sit down together to read with their children.

SUPPORT THE MJCC!
As the High Holidays approach, and we gear up to return to school we can't help but notice a buzz of excitement in the air. We are soon to be reunited with friends as we fall back into our routine of learning, working, commemorating and reflecting on another year. This fall we are, once again, the gathering place for celebrating our community traditions.
The Mittleman Jewish Community Center is recognized by the community as a safe and welcoming place for thousands in Multnomah County to gather, work out, play and commune.
Please consider becoming a donor. Your gift of any size is needed and appreciated. We offer programs and services for little ones who have just joined our community to older adults well into their 90s and everyone in between. Hundreds of MJCC members, guests, and community members come through our doors for programs, services, and events on a daily basis. Membership, program fees and rentals account for approximately 86% of our annual revenue, and we are dependent upon donations and grants to make up the difference.
Here is what your generous tax-deductible donation to the MJCC supports:
• New equipment in our fitness center, gymnasium and studios
• Day Camp scholarships
• Cultural and holiday programming that celebrates our Jewish community
• Need-based financial assistance to ensure that everyone has access
• Competitive salaries to retain staff and trainers that are the face of the JCC
• Updates to the ballroom, lobby, and so much more!
Over the years, our programs and services have evolved and expanded, but our mission remains unchangedto be an inclusive and welcoming hub for a diverse community, fostering lifelong wellness and providing dynamic social and educational experiences, grounded in Jewish values and culture.
Here are a few ways you can support the J:
• Anyone who donates $360 or more becomes a member of The Friends of the Center Society. Friends of the Center Society members get invited to exclusive events and programs throughout the year
• You can donate appreciated stock or a minimum retirement distribution and avoid capital gains (please discuss with your tax professional)
• Become a Sustaining Member for $1800/year (tax deduction depends on your membership cost)
• Add a monthly donation on to your membership
• Join the MJCC Legacy Society. You can support the JCC with an afterlife gift from your will, trust, retirement plan, IRA, or life insurance policy
Thank you for your support of the Mittleman Jewish Community Center. Donate at oregonjcc.org/donate.
For more information about how you can support the J, please contact Bess
Butterworth, Development Events and Community Programs Manager at bbutterworth@oregonjcc.org or at 503.452.3427.
