At the heart of PJA Summer Discovery... are experienced teachers and staff creating their classes based on topics they are passionate about, and sharing them with your children. Summer Discovery instructors strive to provide quality enrichment programming that is fun and challenging, with the goal of providing “new learning� for students.

Every effort will be made to offer listed courses and instructors. If a course must be canceled, PJA will make every effort to direct your child to another class or offer a full refund. Mosaic brings together a broader range of students in an effort to foster and encourage a patchwork of new ideas and lines of inquiry. With mixed-age groups, students learn from their instructor and from one another.

Soaring challenges learners to broaden their thinking through in-depth study of topics offered by our talented instructors. Classes will be taught with inquiry in mind, allowing students to express themselves creatively.

Learn how different properties interact, combine and change through fun and hands-on experiments. We’ll melt metal with our hands, create tin hedgehogs, and learn how to dye our own cloth. This course will provide a supportive environment for girls to build engineer-designed projects such as Boats, Snowmobiles, Catapults, and Merry-GoRounds. Learn the way of Spinjitzu, build the Fire Temple, race Skull Trucks, and encounter the mighty Dragon! JEDI MASTERS ENGINEERING WITH LEGOÂŽ The Force awakens in this advanced engineering course for young Jedi! Discover key engineering concepts such as gear trains, worm drives, pneumatics, and eccentric motion. Build projects such as X-Wings, AT-AT walkers, Pod Racers, and other complex machines and structures from a galaxy far, far away. Instructor: Play-Well Teknologies Cost: $185

This week we will explore the beauty of math and art. With inspiration from such artists as Sonia Delaunay, Frank Stella, Paul Klee and others, we will learn about how these artists use line and pattern in their work and will create our own original works of art using geometric design and mathematical patterns. has been studying music since a child and received his formal music education at Roosevelt University in classical trumpet. He is a music and Jewish Studies teacher at PJA. teaches to foster a love of reading and a sense of wonder in her students. A PSU graduate, she has taught in the USA and China.

BRENNA NAKAMURA

is a Kindergarten assistant who has taught lower grades for five years. She learned origami from her Japanese grandmother as a nine year-old and has loved it ever since.

CELINDA LLANEZ

has taught Kindergarten at PJA for 13 years and first grade for two. As the Director of the Summer Discovery Program, Celinda enjoys seeing the program grow! She is inspired by the wonderful staff and children.

CHRIS BLAKEMORE

Jake McCoy has worked in Jewish education in various capacities over the last ten plus years. This will be his second year working with the Summer Discovery program at PJA. has been teaching for seven years. This is her first year at PJA. She loves to learn and share that love of learning with her students. As a huge Harry Potter fan (Go Ravenclaw!), she is very excited to teach a class centered around it.

PLAY-WELL TEKNOLOGIES

provides project-based programs for children, ages 4-14, using LEGO. As they build elaborate objects, structures and vehicles, kids have fun while exploring fundamental principles of engineering and physics.

RADHA ROGERS

has taught at PJA for 10 years teaching middle school Spanish, cooking, and health. She works with PJA teachers to incorporate learning experiences in the kitchen and PJA garden. She loves to learn, cook, be outside and dance.

taught 3 year-olds in the PJA preschool this year. She has studied many different modalities of fine art. Her passion is ceramics. Katie finds inspiration by guiding others through the unlocking of their creative potential.

RICHARD BOYD

worked in after school care for eight years. He is a professional balloon entertainer with PDX Balloons, and a musician, artist, and Minecraft Expert!

has taught preschool at PJA for almost four years. She aims to bring openended art, cooking, dramatic play and empathy into the curriculum.

is the PJA Day School Registrar. He just finished his 11th year with PJA. Richard loves to support and help administrators and teachers in any way he can.

Chris Blakemore is excited to be back for another year of Summer Discovery. During the other months of the year, she is the Head Teacher at Kidscorner. Her interests include collecting cook books and Tupperware.

LISA RUSSELL

has taught Summer Discovery Since 2015, worked with Dragon’s Den and Kidscorner for two years, then, sadly, she moved away, but she’ll be back for another fun filled summer at PJA!

has been teaching at PJA for 17 years. She loves the integration of stories and art with learning. Susanna enjoys the great outdoors, reading, creating her own art and stories and spending time with her family and pets.

has taught for 24 years, 12 of those at PJA. She believes in learning through hands-on activities and curiosity as a guide to gaining knowledge. She loves children. Her goal is to make a positive difference in all children’s lives.

HEATHER MACLAUGHLAN

has worked for four years with Summer Discovery and works for the Kidscorner Afterschool Program. When Heather isn’t having a blast working with kids, she spends her time with family. She loves traveling and reading.

is in her second year of teaching at PJA. She is excited to share her love of theater and storytelling, as well as play around in the world of Harry Potter that she grew up with.

MARTA JANSSEN

is a PJA Instructional Aide in second grade. She has also worked with students of all grades from both public/ private schools in the PJA Afterschool Program. This is her 4th summer with the Discovery program.

taught math at PJA for 21 years in the middle school and provided math support in the elementary school. She enjoys incorporating art projects in her math classes and loves making art through a mathematical lens.

UNA O’DONNELL-KING

is a Kidscorner/Dragons Den teacher during the school year. Una is excited about science, art and cooking with her students. Una is currently in school and is preparing to go to graduate school in the near future. 14
