Summer Discovery instructors strive to provide quality enrichment programming that is fun and challenging, with the goal of providing “new learning” for students.

General Information
Our Program
• Program Hours: 9:15 am - 1:15 pm
• All children must be the designated age for the program and potty trained by the start of class.
• All children ages 5 and up must be vaccinated against Covid-19. Vaccinations for age 4 are strongly recommended.
• PJA does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, creed, sexual orientation, gender identity or national origin in the administration of its educational policies, admission policies, or any programs.

Lunch and Snack
Bring a vegetarian snack and lunch (meat- and shellfish-free) and a water bottle.
Payment/Refund Policy
In the event of a class cancellation, PJA will make every effort to direct your child to another program or issue a full refund. There are no refunds after June 1 except in the case of a class cancellation. Refunds incur a $30 processing fee.
Pre-Care & After-Care at PJA
Pre-Care: 7:30 - 9:15 am | Ages 4 and up
Cost: $40 per week (pre-registration required).
After-Care: 1:15 pm - 5:30 pm | Ages 4 and up
Cost: $265 per week (pre-registration required)

Become a PJA Junior Chef and cook your way through the colors of the rainbow. Taste test the bounty of our school garden and local farmers’ market. Jr. Chefs will use age-appropriate kitchen tools to make tasty treats like fruit pizza, rainbow popsicles, seasonal sorbet, and more! Food: Vegetarian/Vegan/Meat-free.

PJA Test Kitchen: snack attack
Join the PJA Test Kitchen and explore your creative side as we decorate treats, create recipes, and taste test fun, kid-friendly foods. PJA Chefs will plan, prep and pack the perfect picnic, as well as learn to make their own lunchbox-ready snacks, using age-appropriate tools and recipes. Note: Allergy-free options are available upon request. The kitchen is not allergy-free. All foods are meat-free and Kosher.

Winged unicorns and winged fire breathers! Explore mythical creatures of the sky. Create 3D projects, learn to draw them, read stories, and create your own.

Learn fun summer songs and practice singing in a group and as individuals! Mindful Movement and Practice
This week, we will enjoy fun movement through yoga and outdoor exploration. We will develop mindfulness through journaling, calming practices, meditation, and deep breathing. Learn about the design process and digital design as we plan and build our own robots. We will use Tinkercad to explore 3D design, circuits, and coding while applying rapid prototyping techniques to refine our methods. This week, have fun asking, “What if…” and learn by doing.

Master The Way of the Mandalorian in this Star Wars inspired LEGO® Engineering experience. Come and join our exciting “offline” video game experience where we give the controllers a rest. Gear up to take down the final boss; are you game?

ADRIANNE SHARROCK
Adrianne has taught Pre-K at PJA for 17 years! Chances are, she has read “Frog and Toad” to one or more of your children! Adrianne loves to tell stories, play games, draw, paint miniatures, and play with her rascally dog Ico. She cannot wait to have a new adventure with you this summer!
ANJELICA RUDOLF
Anjelica (Jelly) will be the after-care manager this summer and is excited to build a positive, creative and fun environment for everyone! She has worked a few summers at Summer Discovery, and works during the school year as a program leader at PJA Afterschool (Kidzone). She enjoys genealogy, reading, creative writing, singing and traveling.
BESS NATION
Bess teaches and fosters a love of reading, exploration, and curiosity in her students. She earned her graduate degree in education from PSU in 2014 and has been with PJA for six years. She loves being outdoors, exploring new art forms, and being a mom.
CELINDA LLANEZ
Celinda has been the PJA Summer Discovery Program director for 12 years and enjoys visiting Summer Discovery classrooms when they are in session to see all of the fun activities and cool projects. As a Kindergarten teacher for 26 years, 19 of those at PJA, she loves PJA and its welcoming community.
CLAUDIA RAMIREZ
Claudia has worked with children for more than 20 years. She worked with infants and toddlers at PJA and is currently the Kidscorner Site Director there.
CODY HALL
Cody is an instructional assistant for kindergarten at PJA. She has a Bachelor’s Degree in Theater Arts and loves all things Disney and Marvel. She can’t wait to learn and explore with the kiddos this summer!
ELLEN KIPNIS
Ellen has taught for 27 years, 16 of those at PJA. She believes in learning through hands-on activities and curiosity as a guide to gaining new knowledge. She loves children and her goal is to make a positive difference in all children’s lives.
ELLIOTT SAUNDERS
Elliott has worked at the MJCC and PJA for more than five years. At the MJCC, he was the Membership and Guest Services Manager and oversaw the sports and recreation program, and taught after-school classes. At PJA, Elliott began by teaching P.E. to PreK-2nd grades. Currently, he is the P.E. teacher for grades K-8 at PJA.
FENYX WOLFE
Fenyx is a new member of the PJA family. She began as a substitute teacher and finished teaching the year in third grade! She is passionate about nature, yoga, cats, books, and singing. This was her first year teaching outdoor school, and she was thrilled to have the chance to play and learn with the kids in the community.
JAKE MCCOY
Jake has worked in Jewish education in various capacities over the last ten-plus years. This is his sixth year at PJA, where he works as a Support Services Specialist. This will be his fourth year working with the Summer Discovery program.
LUCY SCHWIMMER
Lucy is in her sixth year of teaching second grade at Portland Jewish Academy. She loves to read, crochet, and spend time with her dog Fozzie. She looks forward to another year of exploring, learning, and crafting with you at Summer Discovery!
MATTHEW A. DALTON
Matthew was previously the Makerspace Education and STEAM Integration Specialist at PJA. He now works at Autodesk helping teachers and students learn digital design (Tinkercad® and more) and manufacturing processes.
PLAY-WELL TEKNOLOGIES
Play-Well Teknologies provides project-based programs for children ages 4-15 using LEGO©. Kids enjoy exploring fundamental engineering and physics principles as they build elaborate objects, structures, and vehicles.
REMY STECKEL
Remy will be working as the assistant to the director, Celinda. They have been teaching at PJA for the past four years. They loved working with all students this year as the library aide and subbing in every class. They enjoy making art, singing loudly in the car, and snuggling with their cats, Ramona and Beezus.
STEPHANIE FADDIS
Stephanie is a fourth grade teacher at PJA and a mom of two. She loves reading, yoga, hiking, and cooking and loves any reason to be out in nature or laugh with friends.
SHAWNA SHADDEN
Shawna is an instructional assistant at PJA. She enjoys teaching and playing music, especially at the same time. She is super excited to make music with you this summer!
SUSANNA PERRIN
Susanna has been teaching at PJA for 21 years. She loves the integration of stories and art with learning. She enjoys reading, creating her art and stories, and spending time with her family and pets.
