WELCOME

Dear Friends,

It’s summer!! And that means MJCC Summer Day Camp! There is still limited availability for some ages on some dates, and it’s not too late to register. We are really excited about this summer’s camp program, and we expect it to be our most fun-filled summer yet! Of course, there are a lot of other events planned at the J throughout the summer.

Our next Family Nosh will be on Sunday, June 9 from 3:00 - 5:00 pm. Shortly thereafter, we’ll have our first-ever MJCC Rummage Sale! Join us at the J on Friday, June 21 and Saturday, June 22 from 9:00 am - 4:00 pm both days.

Portland Pride is being celebrated during the month of July, and the J will, once again, be offering several Pride events. These events kick-off with Drag Queen Bingo on Thursday, July 11 from 6:00 - 7:30 pm. On Wednesday, July 17, we’ll gather at the J to make signs for the Pride Parade. We hope you’ll join us to walk in the Portland Pride Parade on Sunday, July 21. See page 6.

This summer features a number of wonderful cultural arts events, as well. Thanks to a new partnership with Third Rail Repertory Theatre, we’ll be screening the show Dear England from National Theatre Live on Sunday, June 30 at 2:00 pm. In July, we’re excited to present a new exhibition in our lobby gallery space. The exhibit will feature the photographs of Moriah Ratner, telling the story of female Torah scribes. Please join us for the opening reception on July 16. In August, we’ll welcome the Portland Chamber Music Orchestra for a concert showcasing the works of composers from the Holocaust. We are delighted to announce our new MJCC Volunteer Corps. This program, which will kick-off during the summer, provides two options for individuals who wish to volunteer at the MJCC. The first role is that of J Ambassador. This program provides meaningful volunteer opportunities that build community, improve lives, and connect members. The J Ambassador program will connect volunteers with members who are new or returning to the MJCC who would like a better understanding of the J’s programs and services. The volunteer and new/returning member will discuss the member’s interests and meet weekly for eight weeks. These weekly meetings may entail attending a group exercise class, working out in the Fitness Center together, swimming, attending an event, or having coffee at the cafe.

The second role is Arts and Culture Events Volunteer. The MJCC presents a wide range of events related to Jewish holidays, lectures, performances, and exhibitions. We partner with local artists, organizations, and community members to offer these experiences to members and non-members alike. Volunteers will assist with set-up, tear-down, check-in, as well as assist with other needs prior to, during, and following the event. Stay tuned for more details about how to join our Volunteer Corps.

Last but not least, check out our new online store (oregonjcc.org/store) to purchase the latest in MJCC swag!

We’re excited about all the activities and special events planned for this summer. All of us like to be outdoors during the lovely summer weather, but please plan to “find yourself at the J” this summer, as well. We look forward to seeing you.

parents sit down together to read with their children.

There is little to no forward folding, very little seated work on the floor, and extremely limited use of transitions between being on the ground and standing. The class ends with a return to the floor for final stretching and savasana.

Yoga

Flow through this vinyasa class focusing on meditative breath, body strength, proper body alignment in asanas (postures), flexibility, and balance. A variety of levels are available.

Improve range of motion, postural strength and balance, abdominal strength, stability and control, and learn the body’s awareness to its position in space.

SUPPORT THE MJCC!

Summer is upon us at last! We’ve had a busy spring full of events here at the J including our annual Day for the J and awards ceremony where we recognized outstanding members of our community. We are gearing up for the summer season with ten full weeks of day camp as well as other activities planned for the warmer weather.

The Mittleman Jewish Community Center is recognized by the community as a safe and welcoming place for thousands in Multnomah County to gather, work-out, play and commune.

Please consider becoming a donor. Your gift of any size is needed and appreciated. We offer programs and services for little ones who have just joined our community to older adults well into their 90s and everyone in between. Hundreds of MJCC members, guests, and community members come through our doors for programs, services, and events on a daily basis. Membership, program fees and rentals account for approximately 86 percent of our annual revenue, and we are dependent upon donations and grants to make up the difference.

Here is what your generous tax-deductible donation to the MJCC supports:

• New equipment in our fitness center, gymnasium and studios

• Day Camp scholarships

• Cultural and holiday programming that celebrates our Jewish community

• Need-based financial assistance to ensure that everyone has access

• Competitive salaries to retain staff and trainers that are the face of the JCC

• Updates to the ballroom and the lobby, and so much more!

Over the years, our programs and services have evolved and expanded, but our mission remains unchanged - to be an inclusive and welcoming hub for a diverse community, fostering lifelong wellness and providing dynamic social and educational experiences, grounded in Jewish values and culture.

Here are a few ways you can support the J:

• Anyone who donates $360 or more becomes a member of The Friends of the Center Society. Friends of the Center Society members get invited to exclusive events and programs throughout the year

• You can donate appreciated stock or a minimum retirement distribution and avoid capital gains (please discuss with your tax professional)

• Become a Sustaining Member for $1800/year (tax deduction depends on your membership cost)

• Add a monthly donation on to your membership

• Join the MJCC Legacy Society. You can support the JCC with an afterlife gift from your will, trust, retirement plan, IRA, or life insurance policy

Thank you for your support of the Mittleman Jewish Community Center. Donate at oregonjcc.org/donate.

For more information about how you can support the J, please contact Bess Butterworth, Development Events and Community Programs Manager at bbutterworth@oregonjcc.org or at 503.452.3427.

MJCC Legacy Society

This group of dedicated community members have made the extraordinary commitment to remember the MJCC with a gift in their will, trust, retirement account, or life insurance policy. We are deeply grateful to these individuals for their support to ensure the long-term sustainability of our Center. Interested in becoming a Legacy Society member?
