ear Parents, Alumni, Friends and Supporters of Berkeley Hall,

This publication of the annual report celebrates your generosity to Berkeley Hall and to our students. Each of you has demonstrated your commitment in many ways, and each of you has contributed to our community. You make things happen for us, and we are so privileged to have so many people give of their time, of themselves, and of their hearts. Your investment is making a difference not only in the students’ lives today, but it is also helping us lay the foundation for the future of Berkeley Hall. In this annual report, you will see two families profiled and a third highlighted. We celebrate the generous spirit of the McMahan family. The McMahans have not only been at the school for three generations, but have also graciously donated throughout time, including a magnanimous endowment to our school. This endowment will ensure Berkeley Hall’s growth and dedication to teaching and learning for years to come. The Kennedy family is also a legacy family whom we cherish. We are blessed by their three generations who have attended Berkeley Hall and by their giving, not only financially, but of their time and devotion. Our third family is a current and newer family at Berkeley Hall; the Haggett/Hill family. They have been with us for two years, and during that time, they were the major donor for the Early Childhood Department’s new playground, and they contributed generously to the annual fund. We appreciate their enthusiasm and love for our school. This 2016- 2017 Report of Giving is also a time to reflect on our accomplishments. With that said, we are proud to announce we received a full term (7 years) accreditation from the California Association of Independent Schools (CAIS) and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC).

02

Our faculty, staff, and students are proud that the Visiting Committee recognized our outstanding Depth of Study program and commitment to excellence. During the accreditation process, we engaged in school-wide strategic planning that will guide our future growth and strengthen us as a leading preschool through eighth grade independent school in Los Angeles. This plan will lead us to fill the school to capacity with mission-appropriate students within the next two years. We don’t want to be “the best kept secret in Los Angeles” anymore; we want to expand our reach! As I reflect on this year, I am deeply aware that the greatest gift we have received these past twelve months is the gift of each of you – you who make up our warm and welcoming Berkeley Hall family. Your engagement, generosity, participation, and commitment are a priceless asset to our community. Sincerely,

Lisle Staley, PhD. Head of School

Chair, Board of Trustees

ear Friends, The Board of Trustees would like to thank and acknowledge all of you who contributed to Berkeley Hall during the 2016-17 school year. Contributions to the school come in many forms: cash, checks, stocks and bonds, bequests, the many auction items for our fundraising events, time, energy, ideas, and creativity. We deeply appreciate your support, financial and otherwise. Last year, supporters of Berkeley Hall donated $ 4,060,173. A wide variety of constituents from across the BHS community have supported our Annual Fund, from current BHS families, to alumni and friends, to faculty and staff. For all of these contributions, we are most grateful. To all of you who contributed your time, energy, creativity, and ideas, you make possible all of the fun-filled activities that make a Berkeley Hall school year special. A big thank you is owed to our Berkeley Hall Parent Association for the many activities that provided financial contributions and, even more important, opportunities for involvement in the Berkeley Hall community. As Berkeley Hall moves forward, I trust that you will join me in ongoing support as the school continues to follow a thoughtful plan to enhance its educational program, teacher development, and facilities. The financial resources our donors provide enable Berkeley Hall to grow and innovate. Our students are blessed by your generosity. With gratitude,

Margaret Andrews Board Chair

STRATEGIC PLAN 2017-2020

Exceptional ACADEMICS

We will promote active learning in our community that encourages professional growth for teachers, staff and students.

06

Exceptional Vision

At Berkeley Hall, we see the best in each child who attends school here. When developing our strategic plan, we envision exceptional growth and possibilities for our campus and students.

Exceptional ENROLLMENT

We will increase our applicant pool with mission-appropriate students and increase retention of current students. We will strengthen existing partnerships with schools in the community and develop new partnerships with other schools.

Exceptional COMMUNITY

We will continue to embrace, involve, and cherish our students’ parents, guardians, and families, to recognize their impactful and instrumental presence in our community.

2016-17

REPORT OF GIVING

This plan is based on the fact that Berkeley Hall is a leader in preschool-8th grade education among Los Angeles independent schools. This stance gives us confidence that we can grow our school and have a larger waiting list for key entry points by 2020. We have established measurable goals and priorities which ensure our ability to deliver actionable results. Our exceptional vision for Berkeley Hall reaffirms our commitment to our “Depth of Study” teacher development program, our academic programs, and our athletic and artistic excellence.

Exceptional PRESENCE

We will execute a strategic marketing plan that clearly differentiates Berkeley Hall’s value proposition among the other independent schools in the area.

Exceptional CAMPUS

We will enhance our unique hilltop setting, which is our signature asset, by modernizing the campus to create an optimal learning environment for our students.

Exceptional PLANNING We will strengthen our financial sustainability and endowment programs through fundraising and capital improvement efforts.

Playground 08

What started out as a casual conversation among several parents about the condition of the ECD playground, quickly became a parent-driven initiative to build a child’s dream playground. The result – a beautiful new place for our youngest to play – stateof-the-art play equipment beneath bold shade sails! We are so grateful to the Haggett/Hill family for kick-starting this fundraising effort with their very generous donation.

no limits. no labels. lots of love. We have enjoyed our new sports court this year. At the ribbon-cutting ceremony last fall, Dr. Lisle Staley thanked the many donors whose contributions, led by major donor, the Donnelly Burg family, made the new court possible. Students Arianna D. and Kaelan B. cut the bright red ribbon after telling on-lookers what they appreciated about the new court and scoreboard. The premier surface includes a layer of cushioning to protect our athletes during basketball and volleyball; the color was chosen to blend perfectly with our refurbished tennis courts nearby; the height of the basketball hoops and backboards can be adjusted to accommodate younger players; and the new scoreboard makes it easy for players to know the score and how much time is left in the game, especially when our Bobcats are winning!

PROFILE OF GIVING

The McMahan Family

M

any years of progress at Berkeley Hall were aided by the great philanthopy of Jay and Jacqueline McMahan. With Jackie’s passing in January, we would like to pay tribute to their generosity to our school.

Jay and Jacqueline McMahan

No room on the Mulholland campus is more loved and constantly in use than the McMahan Library: the warmth of the fireplace on a chilly day, the groups visiting the Book Fair, the faculty meetings, the coffees for prospective parents, the students doing research for papers, and on and on. It is the center point of so many activities. It is the tangible expression of the McMahan’s early commitment to building the structures on Mulholland. They were among the first to step up as the plans were broadcast to our community. Jackie McMahan was grace personified. Her warm smile and her ability to make everyone feel welcome permeated any event. Many students and parents through the years remember the Graduation Teas held in their beautiful Brentwood home. She also readily offered her home when prospective Berkeley Hall families were invited to a slide show about the school. Berkeley Hall simply held an abiding place in Jackie’s heart. It had been her own school experience and then a school home to each of her six children and many of her grandchildren. The five remaining sisters (their brother Mark is deceased) Bonnie McMahan, Christine McLaughlin, Melinda Conner, Cynthia Hall, and Jamie Trewhitt, organized a wonderful memorial for their mother in Santa Barbara in February. Included in the many stories at that memorial were wonderful accounts of Jay McMahan, who passed on in 2011. His business acumen and success were also a great benefit to Berkeley Hall.

20

In fulfilling Jay and Jackie’s earlier wishes, the McMahan Estate recently presented Berkeley Hall with a generous gift of over $3 million. The Board of Trustees is considering the most appropriate ways to utilize this gift of love to benefit the school in perpetuity. The McMahan sisters’ tribute says: “Berkeley Hall has been such an important part of our childhood and set us on a positive path in life. Our parents loved Berkeley Hall.” The magnitude of this gift is the pinnacle in the McMahan recognition of the value of education at Berkeley Hall for today and the future. We treasure the continuity of generosity and love which this gift embodies. The name McMAHAN stands tall in the annals of Berkeley Hall history. We are forever grateful for the love and generosity all their gifts express.

Parents, faculty, staff, administrators, and Trustees gathered for a night of celebration, community, and cause at our “Beyond the Night” Gala, Berkeley Hall’s biggest fundraiser of the year. Over $300,000 was raised in support of Berkeley Hall’s unique programs such as Mock Trial, Difference Makers, Grades of Green, and Depth of Study. This very successful event came to life because of the tireless efforts of Gala Co-Chairs Vanessa Kiss (right in photo) and Erin LaScala (left in photo), along with their wonderful group of volunteers and BHS Gala liaison Elisabeth Wagner (center in photo). BERKELEY HALL SCHOOL

no limits. no labels. lots of love. Ken and Felicia Kennedy

PROFILE IN GIVING

The Kennedy family Families who have invested in the Berkeley Hall idea in education through the generations truly are a part of the LEGACY of this school. The Kennedy family epitomizes this dedication.

FELICIA KENNEDY ‘52

T

hree generations of our family have gone to Berkeley Hall. Though my mother, Capi Cramer, did not attend Berkeley Hall, she was very active in the community, so the Kennedy family has been very involved with Berkeley Hall for four generations. My mother, Capi, was President of the Mothers’ Club when I was going there, and she, along with three other women, originated the Berkeley Hall Tea (now called the ‘Graduation Tea’) which continues to be a respected tradition at Berkeley Hall today. Capi Cramer was also named a Trustee Emerita. I attended Berkeley Hall along with my brother, John, and my sister, Mary, from Nursery through the Ninth Grade. When I became a parent, I sent my three children, Kevin, Darrin, and Cameron to Berkeley Hall. After Berkeley Hall, Kevin and Darrin went on to attend Harvard School for Boys (which is now HarvardWestlake) and Cameron attended Marlborough School. I served as President of the Mothers’ Club and also as a Trustee for five years. My husband, Ken Kennedy, and I were active on the committee that raised money and helped move Berkeley Hall from its campus in Beverly Hills to its present campus on Mulholland Drive. Ken and I contributed money to the school over the years, and when Hal Hoerner, then Head of School, asked us for a donation to build four tennis courts, we, impelled by our great love for tennis and Berkeley Hall, donated the necessary funds. Our four grandchildren, Katie and Colin Kennedy, and Brooks and Channing Benson, have all attended Berkeley Hall. Their parents, Jodie and Darrin Kennedy,

and Cameron and Charles Benson, have been very active and supportive parents as well as financial contributors to the school. Our parents chose Berkeley Hall for us because of the spiritual and moral values that it taught, and it also taught us about the “whole man,” that is, not just developing the academic or athletic side, but developing ourselves as complete, well-rounded individuals.

“ I’m grateful for our very nice library. I like the topics we’re learning in social studies. ” - COLIN KENNEDY ’21

I

KEVIN KENNEDY ‘79 remember my Berkeley Hall days as happy ones, during which I got an academic education with the support and encouragement of my teachers, participated in the numerous athletic and social activities, and just simply had fun with my friends.

Why we chose BHS

ne thing that really makes BHS special is the considerable emphasis on character development including the moral values of honesty, compassion, responsibility, and respect for self and others. We love that our children learn these values on a daily basis and that values are central to the program at BHS. Balance really does seem to be a guiding principle at the school, where challenging academics are combined with character education. Our children are inspired to be active thinkers on many levels. We appreciate this and see it manifested on a daily basis. As lifelong Christian Scientists with a multi-generational BHS legacy, we also love the school’s rich history and strong sense of community. The spiritual foundation of BHS has always been very important to our family. While religion is not part of the daily activities, we appreciate the environment in which the God-given potential of each child is valued. We appreciate that BHS families come from diverse backgrounds; yet there seems to be deep and common appreciation for the unique community at BHS. A recent example of this unique community was the inspired renovation of the Kennedy Tennis Center over the last two years. Many families showed their amazing commitment to BHS. We are very grateful for this effort on multiple levels, and have forged stronger family relationships within the BHS community because of it. We love BHS!

What Berkeley Hall means to our family

erkeley Hall provides a well-balanced experience for its students by giving them the tools to develop academic excellence, athletic ability, and a strong moral foundation. I remember as a child Berkeley Hall provided a loving and nurturing environment in which to learn and grow. In recent years, my own children have flourished in this same caring atmosphere where each child is encouraged to develop and celebrate his/ her unique talents. In particular, I love Berkeley Hall’s commitment to involving all students in some facet of the performing arts, as it helps them develop poise and confidence in public. It is clear to me that Berkeley Hall is constantly striving to be at the forefront of education.

“ Some things I loved about Berkeley Hall are the friends that I’ve made, the teachers, and the athletics.” - KATIE KENNEDY ‘17

Ways to GIVE

Berkeley Hall, like most independent schools, relies upon charitable gifts beyond tuition income to support and strengthen its academic, artistic, and athletic programs. Rather than simply increasing tuition by whatever amount is necessary to support our programs, we solicit tax-deductible donations through various philanthropic initiatives that help Berkeley Hall and enable families to give based on their ability.

CASH, CHECK, OR CREDIT CARD Your cash gift is tax deductible within the guidelines established by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Cash gifts can be made by check or can be charged to your Visa, MasterCard, Discover Card, or American Express. Credit card gifts can be made online at www.berkeleyhaIl.org/give or by contacting Sonya NuĂąez at snunez@ berkeleyhall.org or at (310) 476-6421 x259.

RECURRING GIFTS Berkeley Hall provides the opportunity to give recurring gifts. If you are interested in giving a monthly, quarterly, or yearly donation, please visit our website at www.berkeleyhaIl.org/give.

MATCHING GIFTS

GIFTS IN-KIND

Gift matching is a way to increase the value of your own charitable gift through your employer. Corporate Matching Gift programs are a great way to double or triple your gift. Some companies match gifts made by employees, retirees, and/or spouses. You can check with your employer or on the Berkeley Hall website at www.berkeleyhall. org/waystogive to determine if your gift is eligible for matching.

We welcome gifts of goods or services that may provide a budgetary savings to Berkeley Hall to fulfill a particular departmental or educational need. Per IRS guidelines, Berkeley Hall will provide a thank you letter substantiating your in-kind gift. Please consult with your tax advisor to identify the tax benefits specific to such a gift.

STOCKS OR BONDS

Giving a gift of real estate, such as a personal home, vacation home, undeveloped property, or a farm, can be a highly effective philanthropic and financial strategy.

Should you wish to make a donation of stock and/or bonds to Berkeley Hall, please visit www.berkeleyhall.org/waystogive for more information.

REAL ESTATE

In whichever ways you choose to give, please know that Berkeley Hall deeply appreciates your consideration, partnership, and financial support.

thank you! 32
