The newspaper article to the left was sent to Beulah Heights shortly after it appeared in the Atlanta Journal newspaper. It surfaced recently in the Alumni Office, so we take this opportunity to share it.

We have recently been contacted by his son, Quito. He reports that his father, Oscar, met his bride while the two were on a mission in Columbia, South America. They returned to the United States after she contracted malaria. The two were then married, and the Whitlocks were involved in some way (he is not certain of the role they played) in the wedding. The Smiths returned to Mira Flores, Columbia, and had their son Quito there.

GRADUATE PROGRAMS • Master of Arts

Hobbies: Reading, although age has forced the bifocal issue Currently living: in Pocahontas, Arkansas. I like the rural living rather than the fast pace of city life. I also enjoy having a 10 minute commute.

Current job: Prof. of History at Black River Technical College in Pocahontas, Arkansas, for 15 years. Birth place: Paris, Arkansas Education: Hartford High School, Hartford Michigan (1973); Beulah Heights Bible College, B.A., 1976; Arkansas State University, Jonesboro, Arkansas 1986-1988, B.S.E.; ASU; 1989 Masters of Arts in History; University of Memphis, Memphis, TN, 1994-2001) Ph.D. Family: Married to Paul Power, 1981 and we have one daughter, Robyn, born in 1982, and 2 grand daughters

The biggest challenge since leaving Beulah Heights Bible College has been to find my place in the world. I knew that I wanted to teach, but the question was what and how. When attending Beulah, my love of learning was ignited. The instructors had a wealth of knowledge that I wanted, too. I really, for the first time in my life, was good at school. Dr. James B. Keiller was a role model for continuing your education even after you had the job you wanted. He finished a degree while I was attending BHBC. It stuck in my mind. Of course, our classes at BHBC were all small compared to today. Beulah Heights prepared me for my own career as a teacher by giving me a solid foundation. I left that college knowing both the biblical principles in education, and how to be professional and succeed. Hard

work, doing dishes, serving meals, bus ministry in the projects, nursing home and prison ministries all gave me an education far beyond the books. I learned to deal with people. I learned to lean on God when things looked hopeless. “It is well with my soul….” There are so many, many lessons that I learned at Beulah I could go on and on. When I left Beulah I had no idea where God would carry me to in my journey. I am so thankful for Beulah Heights Bible College! I am an accomplished teacher. I have been named to Who’s Who Among American Teachers eight times, and I do textbook reviews. Bottom line, teachers at Beulah made me aware that I was a good student. No one had ever said that before. They took time for me. Now, as a teacher, I take the time to encourage students. Sometimes that makes the difference and challenges them to reach higher. Let me always be an encourager, look at the positive side and do my best always.
