Bowen Youth Centre The Bowen Youth Centre is a sociable, all-inclusive, youth-focused space running under the philosophy of Youth Initiated Recreation. Youth aged 12-18 are welcome to stay for an hour, the whole night or just use the place as somewhere to meet up with friends before going out. Everyone is free to come and go as they please. During dropins, there are always things going on such as street hockey, skate sessions, BBQs, movies, gaming, and lots of goofing around! Ultimately, you’re sure to find someone and something that fits with where you’re at.
If you turn up and want to make something new happen, there are always friendly, fun-loving Youth Workers on hand to help spontaneously facilitate stuff and offer quality advice. And if you need to check in on a more personal or private level, you’re welcome to talk with John. He’s around on Thursday and Friday nights. Check out our page on Facebook, or our website www.bowenyouthcentre. com. Youth Services Coordinator: John Stiver Youth Centre: 604-947-2717 Email: jstiver@bimbc.ca
We have the best pool table on Bowen Island, road hockey, basketball, as well as a flat screen TV, which make for great movie watching and multiplayer gaming. It will be open the same hours as the youth center. Come down and check it out. The Youth Centre offers an off island out trip once a month ( movies, rock climbing, PNE, and more). If you have any suggestions let us know at the center. If you haven’t dropped by recently, you may not know: • We have a music Jam Night every Thurs from 4–7 pm with a drum kit, PA, guitar amps, bass, bass amps, piano, organ, and more! • The amazing Kat and Leigh-Ann make delicious treats most Thurs and Fridays • Pizza generously donated by the Bowen Pub, and the Tuscany on Sat. • New 72” big screen TV and surround sound coming any day! Bowen Island Community School The Bowen Island Community School (BICS) has been in existence since 1974. BICS opened its doors at the current site in the 1981-1982 school year. BICS has been part of the West Vancouver School District (SD45) since 1986! The Community School Association (CSA) is a long-standing non-profit society that has a Board of volunteers interested in promoting and supporting BICS as an active, accessible community school for all ages. The CSA recently attained charitable status. The CSA operates both independently and in partnership with the BICS Parent Advisory Council (PAC) to form the BICS Action Group. Every BICS parent is a member of the BICS PAC. Any Bowen resident can be a member of the CSA. The CSA holds four focus meetings per year on the third Thursday of Sept, Nov, Jan and May. Please check the online Community Calendar for more information.
Interested in making a donation to BICS or the CSA? Tax receipts are available for most charitable donations over $25
A note about the old BICS logo: It was created by BICS art teacher Royal Plant, in 1986, after we became part of the West Vancouver School District. This logo has served BICS for 25 years, and has been retired. We are excited to introduce our new school logo created by local graphic designer, Leanne Romak.
The PAC generally meets the first Wednesday of the month, 6:30 pm at BICS. Complimentary childcare is provided at all PAC meetings. The CSA (pictured above) generally meets the third Thursday, every other month.

BEST workout Osteoporosis Prevention and Maintenance Program (Bone Estrogen Strength Training) Osteoporosis is a silent disease. It occurs slowly over time, usually without any signs or symptoms. Osteoporosis is usually not diagnosed until a person suffers a broken bone or fracture. Lack of physical activity is a primary risk factor for bone loss and osteoporosis. Regular physical activity is crucial for optimal bone growth and the maintenance of bone mass and density once skeletal development is complete. Study from 1995- 2001 from the National Institute of arthritis musculoskeletal diseases, and the studies showed that weight bearing and resistance exercises over a period of 1 year, combined with Citrical supplementation significantly improved bone mineral density at fracture sites in postmenopausal women. These women were instructed to perform supervised aerobic, weight bearing and weightlifting exercises 3x per week. They were also encouraged to maintain interest by participating in social support programs. We are pleased to offer this program for a three month free trial basis on Bowen Island and thank the Bowen Island Municipality for their funding support. The program will include: • Monthly Speakers with a social get together, healthy snacks, coffee, tea provided at Bowen Lodge - Mondays at 11:00 am. Dates to be decided. • A 2 x per week strength training program participants would complete with supervision by a Certified Personal Trainer • Instruction on a third Cardio exercise to be done independently • Measurements and weight taken at start of program (optional) • Email support • Exercise Logs and Workout Charts

Stay tuned for25 more information these and projects: Celebrating Years of Artsabout & Culture onother Bowen Island Street Banners for Artisan Square We are commissioning two locally designed commemorative street banners for professional printing. Twelve brightly coloured banners will be unveiled during Arts & Culture Week at the end of April and hung in Artisan Square. This is a pilot project and we hope to expand it in future years down to the Cove. Flirting with the Arts This is an opportunity to get close up and personal with the arts. Try your hand at a new art in this relaxing social situation at the Gallery. We’ll have six stations set up with artists waiting to introduce you to a variety of art forms, from shadow boxes, to a crash course in writing poetry. No commitments; come for fun and see what new love you discover. Art for the Birds Bowen is an island of walks, and we want to line a few of our trails, beginning with the one from the Cove up to Artisan Square with bright signage to guide the way. We will host a morning and invite children, youth and adults to paint birdhouses, or other trail markers that we will erect to mark the trails and make it easier for visitors and residents alike to find their way. Bowen Anthology This will be the second volume of prose and poetry published by BIAC featuring local writers. The book will be published before the summer and be widely available. We’ll also host a book launch and author readings to celebrate the project. BIAC: 25 Years of Arts & Culture Exhibit We’ll be producing a walk through time, portraying the activities of BIAC, artists and other community members over the past year. We intend on mounting the exhibit at the Visitor Centre so that tourists as well as residents can witness the vibrant arts scene that continues to thrive here. We’re also collaborating with the Museum & Archives as they present their History of the Visual Arts exhibit at the Museum. We also will be co-hosting at the Gallery, a panel on Making a Living as an Artist on Bowen. Arts & Cultural Directory BIAC will be producing an Arts & Cultural Directory that lists artists, artisans, crafts people and others involved in artistic endeavours both on and off the island. The compendium, both in digital form and available as a hard copy directory, will help promote local entrepreneurs and provide a directory for those seeking to employ our talented residents. Bowen Bohemia Get ready for a cabaret style evening of song, music and theatrical performance held at the Gallery @ Artisan Square. The program is loosely based on capturing the essence of Lieben, the artists’ retreat that was frequented by so many artists and writers during the 40s, 50s and 60s. The production features characters and some of the work that was created at Lieben in an engaging and entertaining format. We’ll be staging this during Steamship Days and expect sold-out audiences. The Summer Sessions This is a series of musical performances featuring local musicians that will run during the summer months. The free concerts will be staged outdoors either in the Cove or at Crippen Park. Birthday Bash A community party, complete with cake, balloons, and live entertainment at the Gallery of course. Mark you calendars for this festive event on July 27 and come celebrate!
Our Partners & Sponsors: The Silver Anniversary Celebration is made possible largely through a grant from the Province of BC and the Government of Canada through its Partnership and Innovation Fund. We also acknowledge the continued support of the Bowen Island Municipality and the BC Arts Council. We’ll be collaborating with the Bowen Museum & Archives, the Bowen Public Library, Steamship Days, businesses, merchants, theatre and musical groups, authors, artists and a host of others. Sponsorship opportunities are available! For more information, please contact Jacqueline M. Massey, Executive Director, 604.947.2454 or admin@biac.ca and visit our website at www.biac.ca
