general info & policies

announce the launch of a new online Recreation, Education & Arts Program Registration System.

We’ve teamed up to make it simpler and quicker to register for classes, workshops, events and other community programs on Bowen Island. As of this 2012 Fall Season, you can register online for your favourite programs and discover new opportunities for learning, developing your creativity, becoming more fit or exploring new pursuits. The new system is a cost-effective, environmentally-sensitive and efficient way of managing program registration.

How it Works • Create your account online at http://activenetca.active.com/bowencommunityrec. You can sign up all family members on the same account. • Browse or download the online brochure, located at www.bowencommunityrecreation.com. • Register for courses by choosing one of two options: 1. Click on the registration number and fill out the form online, paying via credit card. 2. Visit the Community Recreation office located at the Bowen Island Community School to register in person and pay by cash, cheque, debit or credit card. PLEASE NOTE: Although the system is designed to be user-friendly and simple, we are anticipating a few glitches along the way as we all become familiar with the new software. We ask for your patience with the promise that we’ll all be working hard to continue to deliver the excellent service and attention you received in the past. 3

bowen youth centre

A fully functional mobile skateboard park in the car park of the youth centre was added in the Summer of 2011. It will be open the same hours as the centre The youth centre offers an off island out trip once a mouth (movies, rock climbing, PNE, and more).

The Bowen Youth Centre is a sociable, all-inclusive, youth-focused space running under the philosophy of Youth Initiated Recreation. Youth aged 12-18 are welcome to stay for an hour, the whole night or just use the place as somewhere to meet up with friends before going out. Everyone is free to come and go as they please. During dropins, there are always things going on such as street hockey, skate sessions, BBQs, movies, gaming, and lots of goofing around! Ultimately, you’re sure to find someone and something that fits with where you’re at. The centre is open every Thursday (4:00 - 7:00 pm), Friday (4 pm - 10:00 pm) and Saturday (6-10:00 pm) and all youth are welcome to hang out. We have the best pool table on Bowen Island, as well as a flatscreen TV, which makes for great movie watching and multi-player gaming. There are also 2 networked PCs, allowing for music downloads, MSN, Facebook and multi-player gaming. If youth have a band or would like to jam with other youth musicians, they can come down on Thursday’s to use the youth centre space to practice or just jam. We have guitars, amps, a drum kit, and a PA.

10

If youth turn up and want to make something new happen, there are always friendly, fun-loving Youth Workers on hand to help spontaneously facilitate activities and offer quality advice. Should any youth need to check in on a more personal or private level, they are welcome to talk with John Stiver, the Youth Services Coordinator. The Bowen Children’s Centre has ongoing registration in all our programs based on availability Give Your Child a Head Start

A Happy Way to Spend the Day

The Bowen Island Preschool has a Reggio Emilia approach to early childhood learning – the practice of following the interest of the child to provide an enriched curriculum that is open ended and exciting. In keeping with the beautiful island we live on and our profound sense of community, our fabulous team of teachers create inspired curriculum from the world around us, striving to develop the whole child: socially, emotionally, physically and academically. Already familiar with BCC? Come and see what’s new in 2012

Open from 7:30 am to 6:00 pm, the Community Daycare has a rich and inviting learning environment for two to five year olds. Using the Reggio Emilia approach to learning, we foster positive socialization and secure emotional development for each child. The daycare is a happy place where the children are free to explore the environment during an unhurried day. Lots of outdoor time in our fabulous, spacious play ground, as well as complimentary sessions of music, yoga, clay modeling and bookmaking (to name a few)make a day at the daycare just too much fun! Call the daycare coordinator at 604-947-9628 or email daycare@ bowenchildrenscentre.ca and we will be happy to assist you.

Serious Fun The After School Club, while being serious fun, is a program designed to inspire and actively challenge your child. Catering to children’s individual needs, we aspire to offer each child a balance of stimulating physical activities in combination with restful ones. Children come because they love it, because they can have play dates with friends, and because you, the parent, need peace of mind knowing they are cared for in a safe and happy environment. AND some children come for the food – nutritious, generous, snacks each and every day. Contact Ann at 604-947-9626 or email info@bowenchildrenscentre.ca

An Introduction to Permaculture

Bicycle Show and Shine

Permaculture is the conscious design of agriculturally productive ecosystems which have the diversity, stability and resilience of natural ecosystems.

Bowen Island ‘Bicycle Show and Shine’: a bike maintenance/how to ride safely and have fun event! We used to have events like this in the past at BICS, with youth showing up with their bikes, cleaning them, decorating their bikes, checking chains, air tire pressure; reviewing rules of the road and going through a cone route to ride through, etc. to test steering skills, etc., This event is fun and inspirational for the youngest bike riders on the island. The day’s activities will be lead by Dan Cowan, and may have some special community guests dropping in as well! This low-cost event is subsidized thanks to community support groups.

Permaculture strives for the harmonious integration of human activity, dwellings, microclimate, annual and perennial plants, animals, soils, and water. The focus is not solely on the elements themselves, but rather on the efficient relationships created amongst them by how we place them within the landscape. This dynamic introductory course will combine classroom and outdoor hands-on learning sessions class. Course topics will include: • Permaculture Principles/Ethics/History • Zones and Sectors in Design • Functional Analysis of Design Elements • Pattern Literacy and uses in design • Guilds/Food Forests • Permaculture Observation and Mapping • Home/Yard Scale Design • Hands-on Sheet Mulch and Planting. BEST workout Osteoporosis Prevention and Maintenance Program (Bone Estrogen Strength Training) Osteoporosis is a silent disease. It occurs slowly over time, usually without any signs or symptoms. Osteoporosis is usually not diagnosed until a person suffers a broken bone or fracture. Lack of physical activity is a primary risk factor for bone loss and osteoporosis. Regular physical activity is crucial for optimal bone growth and the maintenance of bone mass and density once skeletal development is complete. Study from 1995- 2001 from the National Institute of arthritis musculoskeletal diseases, and the studies showed that weight bearing and resistance exercises over a period of 1 year, combined with Citrical supplementation significantly improved bone mineral density at fracture sites in postmenopausal women. These women were instructed to perform supervised aerobic, weight bearing and weightlifting exercises 3x per week. They were also encouraged to maintain interest by participating in social support programs. We are pleased to offer this program for a three month free trial basis on Bowen Island and thank the Bowen Island Municipality for their funding support. The program will include: • Monthly Speakers with a social get together, healthy snacks, coffee, tea provided at Bowen Lodge - Mondays at 11:00 am. Dates to be decided. • A 2 x per week strength training program participants would complete with supervision by a Certified Personal Trainer • Instruction on a third Cardio exercise to be done independently

Decorating 101

Residential Landscape Design

What is your style?Let’s have some fun! The essential elements of decorating will be thoroughly discussed each class: color, lighting, wall & window, furniture, textiles, artwork & accessories and how these are combined to create a style in a space. There will be an emphasis on sharing ideas, exploring personal style, implemented through the creation of mood boards. We will be using a variety of materials: reference books & magazines, fabrics, swatches, trimmings, etc. that will be supplied. Bring your own magazines for clipping, scissors and glue sticks.

This workshop offers home owners, landscape professionals and others interested in developing this particular design skill, a hands on exposure to the process. Participants are encouraged to bring a site plan of their property with foot print of their residence as well as trees, plantings, elevation changes, view corridors etc. to a scale of 1/8”=1’. We will demystify issues such as site analysis, bubble diagrams and preliminary concepts, as well as touch on basic construction details and planting plans. Ideally participants would have access to a “T” square and an adjustable triangle, mechanical pencil and an eraser. Tracing paper and drafting tape would be provided.
