Fall/Winter 2013-2014

Welcome Bowen Island Community Recreation, Community Learning and the Bowen Island Arts Council (BIAC) have once again teamed up to present programming for the 2013-2014 Fall/Winter Sessions. Remember to check back often, we’ll be updating the brochure as new programs and events pop up. You can also visit our website at bowencommunityrecreation.com

How to Use this Brochure Please refer to the Contents page when searching for programs, which are grouped according to age. When you’re ready to sign-up for classes, you have three choices. 1. Children: Age 5 - 12 Irish Dance (Various ages)

Theatrical Combat 9-12yrs

Girls and boys learn the basic Irish steps and dances while exploring traditional music and rhythm. Each class will include warm up games and conditioning, skill development, and a cool down/stretch component. The Fall term will focus on developing a solo dance, Winter term’s emphasis will be on group dancing, ending with a St. Patrick’s Day Ceilidh. (Must complete Fall term to participate in Winter term).

Are the characters we see on film and television really fighting each other? Students will learn that what the audience sees is not two people embarking in vicious conflict, but in fact actors working in harmony to create the illusion of chaos and violence. Through acting and fundamental movement exercises students will gain awareness and control of their bodies, and learn to keep themselves and their fellow fighters safe. We will examine how violence can contribute to storytelling, create characters, as well as learn, rehearse and perform choreographed fight scenes.

Residential Landscape Design

Are the characters we see on film and television really fighting each other? Students will learn that what the audience sees is not two people embarking in vicious conflict, but in fact actors working in harmony to create the illusion of chaos and violence. Through acting and fundamental movement exercises students will gain awareness and control of their bodies, and learn to keep themselves and their fellow fighters safe. We will examine how violence can contribute to storytelling, create characters, as well as learn, rehearse and perform choreographed fight scenes.

This workshop offers home owners, landscape professionals and others interested in developing this particular design skill a hands on exposure to the process. Participants are encouraged to bring a site plan of their property with footprint of their residence, as well as trees, plantings, septic tank/field, significant elevation changes, view corridors, as well as a wish list of elements they would like to see included in the design of their garden. We would touch on topography, site analysis, bubble diagrams and conceptual design.
