Editor’s Letter

S

eptember marks a month of new beginnings, a transitioning period from the warm summer days to the cooler fall ones. September is the month of starting over, or starting again, and looking towards the future.

For me, September is the most exciting month of the year. In only a few weeks I’m about to depart on the most important journey of my life: the start of university. I feel so overwhelmed with ideas, emotions and happiness flowing through me in everything I’m a part of at the moment, but somehow I still feel surrounded by a sense of unknowingness, and this fear of not knowing what the future may hold sometimes scares me. But moving forward in life is key, and I’m 120% ready for this wild ride that is university. On a less personal note, September is also the month of Fashion Weeks, where the next season’s trends glide beautifully down the runway in major fashion capitals: New York, London, Milan and Paris. In fashion we are always looking ahead, forecasting the upcoming trends and aiming to do better every time. The industry never sleeps; it is even truer in the month of September. With the fall soon sweeping over our cities, the people of London have already taken out their oversized coats, pastel shades, bushy sheep-like pieces and velvet clothing. Without a doubt, fall may just be the most interesting time of the year in terms of fashion. I have to admit, summer is my utmost favorite season simply because of the hot weather and the lack of covering yourself up under a million shades of clothes. But if I were to pick a favorite month (now this one is difficult), it would have to be September – and I can’t help but smile at my excitement for Fall to finally hit London by storm.

INTERVIEW with Sarah Helfrich

FOR CHLOE + ISABEL JEWELRY CHLOE + ISABEL IS A BRAND OFFERING HIGH QUALITY JEWLERY WITH SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE’S TASTE — AND AT AFFORDABLE PRICES! BIBI GOES CHIC MAGAZINE HAS INTERVIEWED SARAH HELFRICH, A CONFIDENT AND CREATIVE ENTREPRENEUR WORKING AS A MERCHANDISER FOR THE BRAND. HERE SHE GIVES US AN EXCLUSIVE INSIGHT INTO CHLOE + ISABEL’S NEW COLLECTION, AND MORE...

What inspired you to work in Fashion as a Merchandiser for Chloe + Isabel?

Tell us a little more about the founder of Chloe + Isabel:

When the opportunity to become a Merchandiser for Chloe + Isabel came ‘across my desk’, so to speak, I thought of it mostly as a creative outlet; a way to escape some of the stresses of my career. I am a Registered Nurse in the neonatal ICU, and I have been a nurse for six years. However, before I went to nursing school I had planned to go to art school and study ceramics - quite the change, I know! And I found myself missing this aspect of art and design in my life. Part of the beauty of the opportunity given to me with Chloe + Isabel is how flexible it is, given that now I’m able to do both merchandising for c+i and nursing - which I would not want to give up since being a nurse has become very much a part of my identity.

The CEO and founder of Chloe + Isabel is Chantel Waterbury. a woman who worked 15 years in corporate fashion and retail and saw that there was a lack of opportunities for young women like herself. She wanted to develop a company that wasn’t around when she was starting her own career and sought to share her expertise in the industry to empower the modern woman of today. Her vision translated into Chloe + Isabel, a socially connected community of like-minded, career-driven women selling a product worthy of their passion. I’m so proud to be a part of this amazing company!

You have a very interesting background, working in both nursing and fashion. What has Chloe + Isabel brought to you that working as a nurse didn’t? Let me say that being a nurse is extremely rewarding, and I truly love it. It can also be very difficult at times... It can be emotionally taxing and stressful, the hours are long, and we are constantly giving of ourselves, often without receiving much in return. Chloe + Isabel has brought me so much! The opportunity to be my own boss, a supportive community of women like myself, and the realization that I can be successful as a selfdriven business model. It’s like nothing I’ve ever done before! I have really enjoyed the graphic design that comes with creating my own marketing materials, and the photography - finding the best light to highlight the beauty and detail of a piece. It feels good to be artistic again in these ways.

As an entrepreneur, what skills have you learned growing your own business? Goodness, where do I start? I knew very little about sales or business when I started with c+i! As I mentioned earlier, my graphic design and photography have improved and I will continue to hone those skills. I have learned how to work smarter-not-harder by scheduling my time for working on chloe + isabel, which has been a challenge since I also work full time at the hospital. The biggest lesson I have learned is to put yourself out there! You can’t expect to be successful without taking risks and investing in your business. Within the c+i merchandiser community we use a hashtag, #scaredbutimdoingitanyway, for when we step outside of our comfort zones. It’s encouraging for me to see it used because it reminds me that not everything comes easily or without a little discomfort. Continued on page 22.

INTERVIEW What were the inspirations behind the new Botanica collection? “Botanica” in Latin literally means: of or relating to plants. Many of the shapes and colors found in the collection are taken directly from nature. Our design team blended these rich, natural hues with vintage and Deco-inspired designs and the result is truly stunning! Within Botanica there are five mini collections. “Beau Monde” relates to high society. Featuring rich tonal teals, silvery blues, and gray mother-of-pearl in both abstract petal and more structured Decoinspired shapes, this collection will have you living the high life in style. The Beau Monde Statement Necklace is THE statement necklace to have this season! “Bouquet Rouge” is all about Fall color. Deep plums, berries, and radiant orchids are displayed in chic cluster designs accented by Swarovski crystals and gray mother-of-pearl. These pieces are a perfect for a Fall wardrobe update! Our latest update to the “Tresors” pendant charm collection feature precious woodland creature pendants inspired by vintage chain watches and hand-painted lockets. The Fox Locket, Wise Owl, and Bumble Bee pendant charms are incredibly detailed and pair perfectly with the new chunky, textured Tresors Chain + Pave Necklace Set. “Jardins du Trocadero” was a bestselling Limited Edition collection when offered in emerald last year. And in this new sapphire color, the pieces truly shine like diamonds! Inspired by the architecture and gardens of Paris, the Deco details in this collection are elegant and stylish, blending seamlessly with your fine jewelry. “Color Code”: These more simply-designed pieces are the perfect layering essentials to easily upgrade your Fall look. The styles are feminine yet edgy, and will coordinate effortlessly with other Botanica pieces, our core c+i styles, and with jewelry already in your collection.

In your opinion, what are three of this season’s must-have jewelry trends? One of the trends I’m loving for Fall is insects in jewelry. These critters actually date back as far as the Middle Kingdom in Egypt! Scarab amulets were worn as symbols for protection. Then in the Georgian period, around the 18th century, insects and butterflies became a very popular motif in fine jewelry. And more recently we’ve seen large insect brooches grace the runways, with Alexander McQueen and Lanvin being among those to bring this vintage look back. Our Limited Edition Papillon Nocturne collection features abstract butterflies in deep plums, and our newest Tresors Bumble Bee Charm pendant is precious and so detailed in seed pearl pave. Statement necklaces are here to stay this season and they are getting even more bold! A perfect example is the Beau Monde Statement Necklace, in it’s almost shield-like shape. Deco motifs and floral elements come together to create the ultimate statement necklace. I love that it has the option of hanging from both the gray rope or ahandmade chain, worn either way it will take your standard LBD to “look at me”! Bracelets upon bracelets! This is a jewelry layering trend that is easy to master. I like to use 3 or 4 bracelets of different materials and textures to create interest on my wrist. Lately I’ve been loving this look: the Color Code Light Topaz

INTERVIEW Bracelet, the Sculpted Feather Hinged Cuff, and a Bead + Chain Multi-Wrap Bracelet all stacked up - they look amazing paired together! Fashion can be so versatile, and from statement pieces to classic delicacies, versatility is certainly seen in Chloe + Isabel’s collections. Why do you think that this is so important? Yes! Variety is the spice of life. I love that c+i has such a wide range of styles because there is truly something for everyone. The Chloe + Isabel brand was inspired by a concept we call “the friendship philosophy”, the idea of two best friends with different styles and personalities, who are united by their passion for self-expression and fashion. “Chloe” is the trendier, fearless fashionista, and “Isabel” appreciates more timeless, elegant styles. We see versatility between pieces of c+i jewelry (do you favor classic pearl studs over the mismatched sterling silver studs?) but there is often versatility within a certain piece as well! We have many convertible styles, and these are truly my favorite pieces to wear and sell. For instance, the Casablanca Tassel Statement Necklace has three removable pink thread tassels. On certain days, I feel like tassels! But when I want a more subtle look, I love that they can be removed. Another great example are the 3-in-1 Convertible Necklaces. Available in pearl or turquoise beads, these necklaces have magnetic twist lock pave balls throughout their length so that you can wear it as one ultra long chain (I love it knotted for a “Great Gatsby” flair) or you can break it up into a bracelet, and two shorter length necklaces. The possibilities are endless!

DESTINATION Downtown New York City _______________

New York City, those three words that everyone knows. That magical, exciting, busy, and fashionable place that has become one of my inspirations and one of my favorite cities in the world.

I don’t claim to be an expert on Manhattan, but with my love of traveling, I have enjoyed enough to be able to share some hidden gems, delicious delicacies, and trendy locations with you! This summer was exceptionally different for my NYC travel experience. I was fortunate to discover the downtown areas of the Lower East side: Lolita, Soho, Chinatown and Little Italy. The beauty of this area is walking along from one street to the next, and rapidly finding yourself in a different neighborhood than you’ve originally set out to explore, but all the while discovering the unexpected – in a good way!

Travel

Shop to drop (literally!) all through Soho and its surrounding neighborhoods. Mercer Street is one of my favorites with a large variety of boutiques like Roberto Cavalli, Kate Spade, Michael Kors and French Connection, to name a few. Nearby, also on Mercer Street, is the Antique Garage – an eating haven for the most delicious Mediterranean menu anyone could ask for! Being an actual renovated garage-turned restaurant, with its original garage door recessed in the ceiling, the ambiance is truly one-of-a-kind.

Deciding to venture downtown this summer brought about quite an interesting adventure, especially due to the Mondrian Soho Hotel located on Crosby Street. With its trendy vibe, sophisticated upscale atmosphere, busy yet attractive lobby, unusual entrance, and unique terraces, this is THE place to be! The rooms provoke an avant-garde feeling with a pastel blue and white color pallet, deep tinted mirrored walls, chrome detailing, and an overall lovely dĂŠcor. Nightlife cooks in this place, with its rooftop Sky Terrace and gorgeous crowd-pleasing restaurant, Isola. This place is luxury meets deco, perfectly!
