It’s About Love I’ve been thinking quite a lot about love recently. Love comes in many forms – romantic, familial, platonic, self – but the one thing that is certain is that love is the ultimate truth. Love is the reason we are here on this earth and love is how we will return to our ultimate home. For those of you that know me, last year I underwent treatment for breast cancer, and though I am now in the clear, it was a very difficult process to go through. The experience got me thinking about what is important in life, what really matters and how I want to live the life I have been blessed with moving forward. It was a wake-up call to put things around me in true perspective, to be thoughtful of my day-to-day life and to acknowledge the things that make me truly happy, no matter what form they take. As you plan your wedding, take a moment to be mindful and present during each step of the process, because I promise you, this is one of the most exciting times of your life! Think about the experience and how, even with its challenges, it can still be a lot of fun! Then think beyond the party and reflect on what your lives will be like together as a couple once all the hooplah has quieted down and it’s just the two of you alone at the dinner table. For me, running Bibi is all about love: being able to do what I love every day and working with an incredibly creative

team. We are maturing as a company and are seeing the fruits of our many years of labor blossoming around us. We are proud to be working with David Tutera’s bridal show, Your Wedding Experience, as a media partner and look forward to growing this relationship so we can provide our advertisers more visibility in the bridal industry. We are also expanding our brand by working more diligently with international companies looking to reach the South Asian-American market. This year’s cover model is the beautiful Tiya Sircar who is starring in the film, Miss India America. It’s a coming-of-age story about a girl torn between doing what she needs to succeed in life, and what is right. The film is written by Ravi Kapoor and Meera Simhan (a married couple), and produced by Megha Kadakia and Saurabh Kikani (also a married couple). Although Tiya has performed alongside big names like Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn, this is her first time as lead in a feature film, and she does it so well. I urge you to see this film, I promise that you will love it! I know we all did! We also got to hang out with the vibrant Pooja Batra who is starring in One Under the Sun. You probably know her from her work in Bollywood with movies like Virasat and Taj Mahal, An Eternal Love Story, but what you didn’t know is that One Under the Sun is her first role as lead in a Hollywood film. Not only is she a very beautiful woman, but she is also full of positive energy and we know her love for her craft will shine on the big screen! Love does take all forms and once you let it bloom in your heart, it will manifest itself in every part of your life from the most mundane moments, to the grander experiences around you. Recognizing love is perhaps one of the most important things you can achieve in this world, and as you move through your marital ceremonies and lives ahead, I hope you too will acknowledge and allow all the love around you. I know I am, and yes, I’m loving it!

Celebrating Your Union The South Asian wedding is renowned as an elaborate and ostentatious multi-day affair. Whether you opt for a more personal, intimate gathering or a grandiose and lavish extravaganza, chances are you’ll have more than one day of events. Secrets of a

Long

Marriage IT TAKES A LOT MORE THAN LOVE TO HAVE A SUCCESSFUL MARRIAGE. YOU ALSO NEED PATIENCE, FLEXIBILITY AND A GOOD DOSE OF HUMOR. CHEMISTRY AND GOOD LOOKS MIGHT SET OFF THE SPARK, BUT WHIRLWIND MOVIE ROMANCES HARDLY CAPTURE THE EVERYDAY MOMENTS NEEDED TO MAKE A RELATIONSHIP LAST. BIBI SPOKE TO THREE COUPLES MARRIED 20, 41 AND 61 YEARS TO LEARN THE SECRET TO SUSTAINING A LONG AND SUCCESSFUL MARRIAGE. By Priti Verma

Chesley and Tanaz Choudhury 20 Years of Marriage Anniversary: March 17, 1996 Chesley and Tanaz have a love that flourished against all odds. The couple met in 10th grade and then again in 12th grade while studying for the Co-Ed National Board Exams. Then, the two became friends and started exchanging notes. “When she walked into that 12th grade exam room in her blue dress, I had an indescribable feeling. I had a feeling about a future with her that I didn’t know,” he said. The two couldn’t spend a minute apart and Tanaz’s mother stopped allowing Chesley to visit as they came from two separate worlds – Chesley was Roman Catholic and Tanaz, Zoroastrian. After that, their moments together had to be spent in secret. Tanaz knew what she felt was true so at the age of 21, with only $103 in her pocket, she ran away from Bombay to New York to marry Chesley. “You can’t vouch for tomorrow, but you can do what feels right today, and it felt right,” says Tanaz. Chesley and Tanaz say the best part about being married is having known each other from a young age. The hardest part has been keeping up with family relationships and pleasing everyone. They both value and embrace each other’s differences. 40

“People think a successful relationship is built on partners having a lot in common, but in fact, it is how well they can deal with their differences that predicts whether their relationship will succeed,” says Toronto-based licensed clinical psychologist, Dr. Saunia Ahmad, PhD, who specializes in couples’ therapy, cultural sensitivity in psychotherapy, issues related to interfaith relationships and couples coping with chronic health problems. For Tanaz, marriage is sacred and two people are bound by more than just their vows, their marriage certificate or a mangalsutra. She feels people get divorced because they see it as an easy fix, but it takes a lot more courage to stay and make it work. “Marriage requires work on both parts. It is a commitment not just to stay together, but to find ways to be happy together,” agrees Dr. Ahmad. “However, divorce is not necessarily a negative event. It could be a positive outcome for a relationship that is just not working.” The couple encourages others to disagree from time to time, and in order for a marriage to survive, one does not need to agree with the other on everything. They note it is important to give the other person a chance to grow and become their own person. At the end of the day, a marriage is only as strong as the person in it. Dr. Ahmad and her colleagues’ research finds just this. “Couples in successful long-term relationships work because each partner has a ‘couple identity’ or ‘we-ness’,” she explains. “Partners who identify with their relationship tend to think in terms of ‘us’ and ‘we’ when they talk of their union. These connected partners demonstrate greater commitment, mutual support and empathy and have greater levels of satisfaction. However, having an identity with the relationship does not mean one does not have their

own individual identity,” clarifies Dr. Ahmad. “In fact, not having one’s own identity is detrimental to forming a healthy relationship. A well-functioning relationship is one where the couple’s identity supports each partner’s individual identity. Partners who have a sense of ‘we-ness’ often describe the relationship as one that allows them to be who they are and feel their partner accepts them.” “That person is not going to be the right person at all times every day of your life,” says Tanaz. “That’s why you need to laugh together, to be able to enjoy each other’s company so you can rekindle that. It’s not always going to be love with the same intensity at all times, but that’s the beauty of marriage.” When asked how this couple addresses conflict, Tanaz says, “We understand each other’s boundaries. When we do have an argument, we try to sort it out as logically as possible, and if we can’t sort it out, the louder one wins!” When asked what advice they have for young couples, Tanaz said that marriage needs patience and laughter as much as love.

Billy and Harjit Singh 41 Years of Marriage Anniversary: October 6, 1974 Billy and Harjit’s love story can be measured with postage stamps and would rightfully begin as, “Once upon a time in Bombay…” Their colleges were across the street from each other and one day, Harjit saw Billy walking by and waved at him. The two felt an instant connection and began seeing each other. It wasn’t long before Harjit’s family gained wind of their relationship and banned her from all visits to college and any friends. Nobody was allowed to visit Harjit – especially not Billy. In the meantime, Billy moved to Canada to further his studies. One and a half years later, he returned to Bombay for a visit. In that span, Harjit had written him 106 letters – one penned in her own blood – declaring her love for him. He tried to meet her as soon as possible, but it wasn’t until a few people from Harjit’s sister’s side, who knew her father, arranged the meeting between the two. Harjit gave her father an ultimatum that she would either marry Billy or run away from home. Fearing what society would say about his daughter running away, he agreed to the marriage. The wedding took place in Bombay, in the front yard of Harjit’s bungalow in Juhu Beach. Although the couple was married, the relationship between the two families remained estranged. Harjit came from an affluent background and Billy’s family was financially average. Billy’s in-laws would not

speak to or accept him and he would have to bear comments from others about having married her for her money. Jovial Billy jokes back, “I am still waiting for my check.” Ironically, it was this tumultuous relationship between the two families that became the main reason for their arguments. “It was not because we disagreed with each other. Our conflicts would stem from others’ influences, and that was the difficult part.” It took seven years, after they had their first child, for Harjit’s father to speak to Billy. “Extended family can be a major support for a couple, especially during the early years of marriage,” says Dr. Ahmad. “On the other hand, they can also cause a lot of tension. Marriages in India are considered the coming together of two families. Therefore, when families are not happy with their child’s choice, they may act in ways that are unsupportive and stressful for the couple. People want their in-laws to accept and care for them as they would accept their own son or daughter. When this does not happen, there can be a desire for the other spouse to speak up for them. This spouse can feel caught in between the parents and the partner, and this can lead to tension between spouses.” Despite the tensions they faced early on in their marriage, the two reflect on their tough times and attribute everything they have to their own hard work and tenacity. “We never asked anything from anyone, ever. And the best part is we have each other.” Even after 41 years of marriage, their feelings remain the same as when they first met. “We talk the same way we talked in college. The only thing that has changed is we have two kids.” When asked the secret to their long marriage, they said, “We’ve begun to adjust ourselves to each other’s imperfections. We love going to movies, we love going to parties – we sing, we dance. Everything we couldn’t do in college because of 41

restrictions of society, we are doing it now. We are having fun together.” Witnessing their everlasting love, one can’t help but ask what became of the 106 love letters. Harjit admitted that she eventually tossed the letters during a move. “She threw out the most precious thing that brought us together!” Billy jokes. But their love has stayed strong. And their advice for young couples: “Stop looking at the television and your iPhones when you are together!”

Satpaul and Kanta Handa 61 Years of Marriage Anniversary: December 5, 1954 Satpaul and Kanta Handa were in their teens when they met during India’s partition. At a time when the nation was being divided, two hearts had adjoined in a promise that has kept them together for the past 61 years. The two were no strangers to each other – Satpaul’s older brother was married to Kanta’s older sister. In the summer of 1952, Satpaul had finished his final engineering exam and was spending time with his brother and his family. It was the same summer Kanta and a friend came from Shimla to visit her sister. Satpaul was asked to show the girls around while they were in town. The two grew fond of each other during this time and decided to keep in touch by mail. They met a few more times during the holidays at their brother and sister’s place and decided to marry with their families’ blessing on December 5, 1954. An American friend at work once asked Satpaul if his marriage was a love marriage, to which he replied: “In our time, we first get married and then fall in love, and the love keeps growing.” “People often automatically refer to a marriage that was not arranged by their parents as a ‘love’ marriage – as if there is no love in an arranged marriage!” jokes Dr. Ahmad. “But even couples who had their union arranged can be in love, sometimes even before they are married. Many start to fantasize about the relationship they will have with their future partner and look forward to this union. Love does grow after marriage, both for those that had a personal-choice marriage and those that had an arranged marriage.” In 1957, Satpaul and Kanta welcomed their first child into this world. That year, Satpaul went to the UK for higher studies, while Kanta stayed back in India. Reunited in London in 1959, the couple moved to Ghana, West Africa where they lived 22 years and had their second child. In 1984, they moved back to London for 6 years, then made their journey to North America – living in Canada for 6 years and then heading to the US, where they have been for the past 18 years. 42

Satpaul retired in 2006 and commends his wife for the sacrifices she has made. “We have gone through a lot of hardship, moving to different countries. We stood by each other. It is a lot of responsibility to raise children in those circumstances.” They have two children and four grandchildren and reflect joyfully on their world travels and the wealth of friends they have made over time, which has taught them to love people and enjoy life. When asked about their marriage, they replied, “It is hard to describe. We are a happy-go-lucky couple and respect other people’s viewpoints. The best part about being married is knowing someone is there for you at all times and in whom you give all your trust.” Their secret to a long marriage is to hold independent views and freely express them. Satpaul said that he would tell young couples, “Marriage is not easy, try to understand each other, don’t be selfish, care for each other’s wishes and try to ignore unnecessary misunderstanding.” “A healthy relationship is one that allows each partner to be him- or herself and feel accepted by the other. The secret to their marriage – to be able to hold independent views and freely express them – reflects just this,” notes Dr. Ahmad. Love, understanding and respect for each other is what has kept these two together for more than six decades. Satpaul and Kanta are a great example of love that continues to grow as long as two people are willing to grow together. Their motto: Live Laugh, Love… and Travel! ø

Love

LOVE COMES IN MANY FORMS AND SO DO ITS CUSTOMS. RED ROSES, A BOX OF CHOCOLATES AND VALENTINE'S DAY MAY BE ALL WE’VE SEEN IN THE WEST, BUT THE ROMANTICS OF THE WORLD DO NOT STOP THERE. FROM ARMENIA TO CAMBODIA, LOVERS FIND AND EXPRESS LOVE IN FASCINATING WAYS, SOME ENDEARING AND OTHERS DOWNRIGHT STRANGE. By Zainab Koli

Love Huts Fathers of the Kreung tribe in Cambodia are officially the coolest dads in the world. They build “love huts” for their unmarried teenage daughters to meet with boys and spend the night with them. These huts aren’t solely for sex, but also for lovers to get to know each other. Girls are encouraged to meet with many boys until they ultimately find their one true love. As unusually liberal as this process may sound, it’s actually incredibly successful, resulting in very few incidences of rape and divorce.

Salty Bread Forget Valentine’s Day, in Armenia love is symbolized with Saint Sarkis, the warrior patron of love. According to folklore, Sarkis and his 39 men where ordered killed by the king after their victorious return from battle. Forty women were enlisted to kill the troop with everyone succeeding except one. A maid fell in love with Sarkis and spared his life. When he awoke and saw his army had been killed, he left the kingdom along with the woman he also fell in love with.

Nighttime, a bonfire and a group of young adults – no, this isn’t a recipe for S'mores, it’s a recipe for love. The Dai people of China practice this annual ritual in which young women wearing billowing skirts sit around a bonfire turning their spinning wheels while men draped in red blankets and playing musical instruments encircle them. A man attempts to serenade the woman of his liking by playing a song solely for her. If the woman reciprocates the man’s feelings, she pulls out a small stool from under her skirt and invites him to take a seat. The man then wraps his blanket around the two of them and they talk lovingly.

Staying hungry isn’t as difficult when it’s done out of love. On the fourth day after the full moon in the Hindu calendar month of Kartik, married Hindu women of Northern India dedicate the day to their husband, fasting from sunrise to moonrise for their safety, longevity and prosperity. Some unmarried women even keep the fast for their fiancé or desired husband. The husband participates in the festival by buying lavish gifts for his wife and giving her her first sip of water after the moon rises.

Accordingly, the night before the feast of St. Sarkis, young people eat salty cookies known as Aghablit, hoping to see the person they will marry in their dream. Also, a tray of flour is placed before the door believing that while passing at dawn, St. Sarkis would leave his horse’s footprint behind, symbolizing the actualization of the dream. Today, single girls eat the salty cookie and go to bed thirsty, hoping for their future groom to appear in their dream and bring them water. Similarly, the

horseshoe continues to be a symbol of good luck and protection.

A Load of Croc Located in Gambia, West Africa, the luminous green waters of the Kachikally Pools are claimed by folklore to boost fertility. The only catch is that the pools are filled with about 80 crocodiles. However, as the owners – the Bojang family of Bakau – claim, the crocodiles have never attacked a human – also attributed to its magical legend. Couples, especially women, can either bathe in the pools or splash themselves with water to increase their chances of conception.

Ladies Choice Also out of Africa, the Guérewol is an annual courtship competition where the young men of the Wodaabe Fula people of Niger dress in elaborate ornamentation and gather in lines to sing and dance in hopes of catching the eye of a young woman. This yearly festival happens when the nomadic tribes gather at the southern edge of the Sahara and compete for suitors with dances, camel races and bartering over dowry. Best of all, it’s the women who get to choose their marriage mate.

Toothy Gifts Trying to find the perfect wedding gift to present to your father-in-law? Ask the young men of the Fiji Islands, where gifting an actual whale’s tooth is considered a sign of esteem and respect. Known as a tabua, the whale’s tooth was first found on beached whales and given during all important ceremonies. In fact, the elder men of the island were often buried with all of their tabua to help them in the afterlife. Because, let’s face it, it’s not real love unless you have to battle the teeth out of the world’s largest mammal. ø

Tell us about your experience playing the lead in Miss India America. While I have acted in feature films before, this was my first leading role in a film, which made the whole experience significantly different. There’s suddenly a lot more pressure because you know that your performance is going to affect the overall film far more than when you are in a supporting role as part of an entire ensemble. Luckily, I was surrounded by incredibly talented people, from Ravi, to Meera, our writer and wonderful actress who played my mom, to Kosha who plays my best friend, down to every supporting cast member. We were so lucky to have such a wealth of incredibly talented comedic actors sign on to do this project. It definitely alleviated some of that pressure I felt to not screw it up!

recognized parts of me in her. Of course, as the child of Indian immigrants (who happen to be college professors), academics were always of paramount importance growing up. Also, my parents had (and still have!) very high expectations. In Lily’s case, a lot of that pressure is self-imposed but regardless, I think that is something a lot of South Asian-American women can relate to. Lily and I do share a desire to be the best. I, too, put a lot of pressure on myself to succeed and have a pretty Type-A personality. But I’d like to think I temper it with good humor and some charm. You have two degrees. How did you choose your life path and when did you know that acting was your future? I have a degree in Business (Marketing) and another in Theater & Dance from the University of Texas at Austin. I’d known that I wanted to be an actor from a very young age. I started dancing when I was two and acting and doing musical theater at seven or eight. I grew up performing and never considered doing anything else with my life (minus a brief obsession with wanting to be the first female president of the United States at age nine or so. That turned out to be a phase and I went back to wanting to perform and entertain for a living.) What advice would you give South AsianAmerican women about choosing their life path? My advice is to pursue whatever it is you’re passionate about. Obviously, in our culture, there is a lot of pressure to pursue one of just a handful of “desirable” professions. But personally, I know I wouldn’t have been happy doing anything else with my life. And that is partly what made my decision to move to LA to be an actor “easy.” I just knew from a young age that this is what I wanted to do with my life and nothing else would make me feel as gratified and fulfilled. If there is something you feel as passionate about, be it medicine or accounting or heck, race car driving, then you owe it to yourself to give it your absolute best and see what happens!

We had a pretty small budget and a crazy, intense schedule – we shot the whole thing in about three weeks! We all made some sacrifices in order to make this film. So seeing the final product and the audiences’ overwhelmingly positive reaction has been so gratifying. But the icing on the cake was when I won the Special Jury Prize for Best Actress at the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival! It was a total surprise and really quite an honor. Why does your character Lily Prasad resonate with young South Asian-American women? When I read the script, I immediately felt a kinship and a kind of intimacy with Lily. Even though I wasn’t her when I was in high school, I felt like I knew her and

Besides acting, you love animals and the environment. Tell us about your involvement. I have always felt very passionate about conservation and preservation. I have a huge soft spot for animals. These days, I donate my time and resources to organizations like ASPCA, Humane Society and WWF, among others. I also volunteer at Best Friends Animal Clinic in LA and help with NKLA, their initiative to make Los Angeles a “no-kill” city by 2017. Recently, I also started fostering dogs for a great rescue organization called Tails of the City. As far as the environment goes, I try to make a concerted effort to take steps to reduce my carbon footprint. FROM BOLLYWOOD TO HOLLYWOOD, POOJA BATRA IS CONQUERING THE WORD OF CINEMA. THE FORMER MISS INDIA HAS A NEW FILM, ONE UNDER THE SUN, RELEASING NATIONWIDE LATER THIS YEAR IN WHICH SHE PORTRAYS AN ASTRONAUT. THIS IS HER FIRST SCI-FI MOVIE AND LEAD ROLE IN HOLLYWOOD. WE HAD THE CHANCE TO CONVERSE WITH HER ABOUT HER MOVIE, HER LA-BASED COMPANY AND THE SECRETS TO HER EVERLASTING BEAUTY. By Zeb Mamsa How is working in Hollywood compared to Bollywood? Working in Hollywood has been great. Everything from the table read to the shoot was an awesome experience. Compared to Bollywood, it’s not much different. The art of storytelling is the same across the board. And because this is the first Sci-Fi movie that I have done, there were a lot of special effects that were not there when we were shooting so we had to keep that in consideration while giving a take. Who have you enjoyed working with the most? Making a movie is a long process and it’s a lot of fun if you get along with everybody because then that energy and the relationship translates on screen. It’s like being with an extended family on a vacation. There should be no tension on the sets between the actors, unless of course the character demands such behavior. My most memorable shoots have been with Salman Khan, Sanjay Dutt, Govinda, Anil Kapoor and Prabhu Deva. Tell us about your company, Glow Bell Inc, and the role it plays as liaison between the Indian and American film industries. I started my company in 2009 when I helped cast Sylvester Stallone and Denise Richards in Sajid Nadiadwala’s Kambakkt Ishq. I facilitate in acquiring Hollywood actors for Indian directors, producers or companies and vice versa. My company also does Oscar campaigning promotions for the movies that make the cut. in the West Coast, two years ago and also took ModelWire / LA Casting, which is the biggest casting portal here in the US for actors and casting directors, to India in 2010. Tell us about One Under the Sun. It was a dream role for me. I play Kathryn Voss, an astronaut. I am one of the five astronauts to get selected to go to Mars on an expedition. Kathryn, a sole survivor of a disastrous space shuttle mission, is a distraught mother desperate to reunite with her terminally ill daughter, but becomes a wanted fugitive after discovering she possesses an extraordinary gift. As the lead actress, how did you prepare for your role? I did a lot of research on Indian female astronauts, namely Sunita Williams and Kalpana Chawla, to get an appearance and reference sketch for the role. I followed a routine every day and monitored my food intake and exercise to be more disciplined. I watched a lot of documentaries on astronauts about to leave for a trip to outer space. Which project has been your favorite to work on? I loved working on Virasat, Kahin Pyaar Na Ho Jaye, ABCD 2 and One Under The Sun. You look amazing! How do you always look so fresh? Thank you! My parents are very good-looking people. I have been very fortunate to get good genes. I thank them all the time! Yes, I try to eat healthy. I love cooking so I try to cook my own food. I also have a degree in Health and Nutrition. I am training in Mixed Martial Arts so that keeps me active at least three to four days a week. The other days, I have to admit, I get lazy. How do you define glamour? I like the alluring part of it, that is what attracts me to glamour. But without charm and personality, it looks fake. I think glamour should be truthful. ø

Pretty in Pink: Pooja sits pretty in this season’s biggest trend, pastels. This silk and net sari with cutwork lace, silver beading and pearl detailing is paired with a white sequined blouse. Accenting the pearl detailing in the sari are gold-plated Mother of Pearl earrings and a gold-plated, cubic zirconia bangle. For makeup, Blush and Glow’s Posh and Peony blush complement the romantic, pastel pink allure of this look.

Lounging: This azure net sari with white and silver beading is paired with a matching sleeveless blouse. For jewelry, pink Swarovski earrings with cultured teardrop pearls, a traditional kundan Maharani ring and a gold-plated bangle complete the look.

Shoulder Shrug: Bare it in style with this ombre chiffon georgette sari with gold and silver zari detailing and rhinestone cutwork. Paired with an off-shoulder blouse, it’s very on-trend for this season. For jewelry, antique gold jhumkas, a gold foiled necklace with cultured pearls and a gold-plated, cubic zirconia bangle accent the look.

You recently celebrated a milestone birthday. What have you learned about yourself that you didn’t know when you first started your career at 19? I’ve learned that you can always dream bigger and raise the bar higher as long as your heart is in it, you work hard and you keep an open mind. I started out small and slowly grew; before I knew it, I was doing large-scale events, which then snowballed into writing books, getting my own television show, designing fashion and eventually becoming a household brand. At the age of 19, I would have never imagined being where I am today, but by pushing the envelope and being open to every experience and opportunity, I was able to grow beyond what I could have imagined. What is the first step you take when you begin planning a couple’s wedding? Before I get 66

into any of the logistics with my clients, I like to sit down with them, tell them a little about myself and, more importantly, get a feel for who they are – their personalities, individually and as a couple, and their story. From there, I dive deeper, getting to know more about their background, interests and ambitions. This helps me get an overall sense of who my couple is, what their vision and style is and how I can bring that out through my designs on their wedding day. How do you ensure that the couple’s unique style and personality is represented in the wedding? Once I get a sense of who my couple is, I pull inspiration from all different areas to represent and incorporate their personality. Whether they have strong cultural backgrounds, are world travelers, have passionate hobbies or even a unique love story, my goal is to develop a look that represents who they are and what they want. After presenting a mock-up to my couple, we go from there and tweak along the way, if needed, to make for a perfect end result.

Why do you love weddings so much as opposed to non-wedding events? I love planning all types of events for different reasons. For weddings, I specifically like making a love story come to life by bringing out a couple’s personality, story and vision. All of my clients allow my creativity to come alive while still keeping it about them.

What are some 2016 trends that brides should aim for and what are some things to avoid? We are definitely seeing a lot of pastels in 2016, but what I’m really loving is metallic accents, like rose gold, taking the place of a bold accent color. This is a great way to complement any palette and add a shiny, sophisticated pop – from your printed materials to your linens and décor, right down to your cake design. Besides my dislike for the garter toss, a trend that I could do without would probably be favours. It pains me when a bride and groom spend money on a favour that is destined to be tossed aside due to lack of practicality, quality or, simply put, good taste. Whose CELEBration that you have planned has been the most memorable or most extravagant? Every event that I’ve planned has been a memorable one and has had something specific that stands out. Every event is more extravagant than the last, so it’s hard to just choose one. I was honored to work with Vanessa Williams on her bridal shower for my show, David Tutera’s CELEBrations; I’ve always been a big Vanessa fan, so I admit I was a little starstruck, so it definitely made for a memorable experience! I had another famous client whose wedding was held on their property and they had a stunning open-air pavilion built just weeks before the big day. The structure held the reception and was overlooking a lake on the property; it was truly breathtaking. What are some important questions to ask planners when designing an event? The first thing you should discuss should be your budget and how you can maximize it along with what you are envisioning. Other things to discuss should be your overall look, style, feel and colors. Are you more modern, traditional or contemporary? Are you looking for something loose and whimsical or more

structured? In addition to asking questions, these are the things you should think about before sitting down with your planner. Also, ask to see past events that they have designed that use similar colors or styles as what you envision is always a great place to start. Tell us about how you prepared for your first South Asian wedding? Research, research, research! In addition, I wasn’t scared to ask questions when I needed to, in order to ensure we were on the same page. And more importantly, listening to what the client wanted and the overall vision and feel they had. There’s much to consider when planning a wedding of a different culture. I love learning about the symbolism and unique elements that make the day special. For intercultural weddings, tell us how to represent two cultures during the wedding, particularly when South Asian culture can dominate in terms of design. To start, you can have two ceremonies, each representing the cultures. The ceremony is a very structured segment of the day, and if the bride and groom represent two different cultures, it is a great opportunity to incorporate both beliefs. The beautiful patterns and colors in South Asian wedding fashion can certainly dominate, while paying homage to the other culture through other rituals. You want the wedding day to be a reflection of both the bride and the groom. Compromise is key! Which direction do you see South Asian weddings taking in 2016? South Asian weddings are known for being bold, beautiful and extravagant. While jewel tones are definitely here to stay, softer color palettes paired with metallic golds are also making a big statement. I’ve also been seeing the switch-up of the softer, lighter palette with a pop of a bold jewel tone as an accent. What tips can you give brides for a remarkable wedding? One tip that brides forget all too much: be present in each moment of your wedding! Of course you want guests to have a good time, but sometimes brides get so caught up in everyone else’s needs that they forget about their own. On your wedding day, soak up all of the love, joy and bliss and remember that this day is one you won’t want to forget. ø 67

AFTER PICKING YOUR MATE, THE SECOND TOUGHEST DECISION IS DECIDING WHERE TO GET MARRIED. WITH ENDLESS OPTIONS TO CHOOSE FROM, IT COMES DOWN TO STYLE, TASTE, CONVENIENCE AND WHAT FITS YOUR PERSONALITY BEST. HERE ARE A FEW IDEAS FOR DIFFERENT WEDDING STYLES, WHAT TO EXPECT FOR EACH AND SOME VENUE SUGGESTIONS. If a large portion of your guests are flying in, the safest bet is a hotel. Your lodging and parking will be in one place and as your food and beverage needs increase, so do the perks of some event spaces for pre- or post-wedding events. These venues also provide the most flexibility with the load-in and load-out schedule for all of your vendors, as well as electricity. In New York City, The Mandarin Oriental and the St. Regis are beautiful hotels that cater to a South Asian clientele. The Sheraton in Parsippany, NJ looks like a castle and the Pearl River Hilton in NY is also a beautiful property. In Texas, the Hilton Houston North and the Hyatt Regency Houston Galleria are unique options. With destination weddings on the rise, most couples are opting for all-inclusive resorts that cater to the South Asian market and have a chef on site. Your guests pay their way for travel and lodging (in most cases), so with an all-inclusive, you can thank your traveling guests by enhancing their experience. Add on additional amenities such as an elaborate welcome bag, a fireworks display, a private beach party, an excursion or a private car pick-up instead of a shuttle. Karisma Resorts and AM Resorts offer great incentives when going through a planner or agent. You can also choose hotel chains like the Hyatt who have presence from Mexico to Jamaica, the Dominican Republic to Belize, and the British Virgin Islands to Puerto Rico. Barn weddings provide a rustic charm for earthy couples, complete with hanging twinkling lights, mason-jar centerpieces and hay stacked on the sides for décor. There are so many ways to make this type of venue a unique experience, but some factors to consider are weather-related adjustments, outdoor lighting when the event ends while vendors wrap up and the distance from the main driveway to the barn – will the guests walk or do you need a

Oheka Castle in Huntington, New York handsome carriage to transport guests? Noise restrictions may be a factor depending on the proximity of the barn to residences so be sure to ask about your curfew including post event wrap-up time. For the most part, this will be a raw space and all rentals must be brought in, including food set-up provisions and possibly even portable toilets. Be sure to consider these factors when budgeting. If you love wine, a vineyard is a beautiful option to consider, as long as your guest count is small since many of these properties can usually accommodate under 150 people and a tent may not be allowed. These venues book by the hour so having a wedding and reception here could be costly as you would need to privatize it from the public. You wouldn’t be able to do your hair and makeup in a private room until the public vacates. One idea would be to have your nuptials in a traditional setting such as a temple and then head over to the vineyard to dance the night away at your cocktail hour and reception! Art galleries and mansions add their own unique charms to weddings, but have very similar rules to vineyards. If you privatize the space, you can have it for a much longer span of time, but logistics would need to be set early. As these spaces are designed to be smaller, you will need to have your setup done early and be draped to hide your final décor or your guests will need to have a longer cocktail hour while your vendors frantically flip the room. Do keep in mind that some vendors will charge a premium for a short time frame to go from ceremony to reception as they will often need to bring in another team to assist. Larger mansions like New York’s Oheka Castle, Houston’s Chateau Cocomar and Chicago’s Stan Mansion are gorgeous venues for a unique look and have enough space to accommodate multiple functions. In the end, any venue is possible if you keep an open mind. ø

Let the

Music Roll

Shortly after performing a successful event at New York’s exquisite Zuma and prior to that, deejaying Madonna’s Rebel Heart Tour after-parties at Pacha Macau, a new hotspot in China, DJ Suhel discusses his craft, achievements and advice to brides. There is, after all, a technique to pleasing a wedding crowd. DJ Suhel approaches a reception by playing what’s hot at the moment, music the bride and groom grew up listening to and music from when the couple met. “You have to make everybody dance; you have to play the hits.” The intention is to connect with the audience. Even when an outlandish request is brought to the (turn) table, DJ Suhel is creative enough to work it in without disrupting the mix. The DJ has the responsibility of engaging a variety of age groups and personalities. The guests may have different music preferences so the initial spark lies in dynamic music. Suhel states that there is a need to “give people energy. At a South AsianAmerican wedding, start off with some Indian hits, not everyday music. Indian music has energy in it, so it captures guests right away.” He concludes that a DJ accomplishes this engagement not in what they play, but how they play. DJ Shilpa would agree. The DJ has influence in creating atmosphere at a wedding and each DJ has a different style. Through their music, they hold influence. She is notorious for deejaying “genre from genre seamlessly;” that is her stylistic mark. In 70

her advice to brides, she emphasizes that skill is a very important component to consider. This talent would include the artistry to mix and confidence on a microphone – in addition to possessing lighting and proper equipment. Shilpa recommends the use of lighting at a reception. “Lighting is a key component. It looks great in pictures and can be used to create energy on the dance floor.” Lighting elevates the experience. White dance floors and LED lights are recent trends. DJ Shilpa notices that every year, people are one-upping what has been done; couples are now looking for a different experience, something distinctive from the standard package. This is an experience she offers her clients. As a female DJ, Shilpa established a clientele by “creating a relationship, trust and that bond” with her clients. She has found her experience as a female DJ to be one of high-level competition and feels that women have to work twice as hard to make a name for themselves. Although she is assisting a bride, she doesn’t allow the emotional propensity to affect her work. Rather, she seeks advancements through her craftsmanship. Her approach: “Be as good as your competition.” Shilpa envisions her trade as a boutique DJ company, and crafts each event to the clients’ needs. She establishes a connection before signing a deal, ensuring there is chemistry within the working relationship. In the end, the relationship you have with your DJ is very important. DJ Suhel notes that a level of comfort is key. He encourages brides to work with a DJ they connect with, “Work with whom you feel comfortable with because you can’t fake connection. Quality comes at a price.” After all, it is about creating your special day, don’t compromise your entertainment! ø

The Rise of the

SOUTH ASIAN WEDDINGS ARE KNOWN TO BE EXTRAVAGANT AND ELABORATE, WHETHER IN TERMS OF THE VENUE, DÉCOR, CLOTHING OR FOOD. IT USED TO BE THAT EMPHASIS WAS PLACED ON CLOTHING, THE NUMBER OF GUESTS AND THE VENUE, WITH FOOD GENERALLY TAKING A BACK SEAT – AFTER ALL, HOW FANCY COULD YOU REALLY GO WITH CHICKEN MAKHANI AND ALOO GOBI? WITH THE RISING ACCESSIBILITY OF WORLD CUISINE, FOOD TRUCKS TAKING TO THE STREETS OFFERING UNIQUE FARE, BLOGGERS PHOTOGRAPHING THEIR EVERY RESTAURANT VISIT AND YOUR BEST FRIEND’S CONSTANT INSTAGRAM FEED OF HER LATEST PLATED DINNER, THE WINDS OF CHANGE ARE BLOWING AND SOME COUPLES AND SOUTH ASIAN CATERERS ARE EMBRACING THIS CHANGE. NOT ONLY IS THE MEAL EXTREMELY IMPORTANT IN A WEDDING, BUT HOW IT IS SERVED AND PRESENTED IS RANKING HIGHER THAN EVER ON THE PRIORITY LIST. By Rashi Bindra There has recently been a considerable shift from buffet styling to sit-down, plated dinners. Having everyone seated and served without interrupting the festivities is becoming much more appreciated. It is a common belief that this option is reserved for mostly non-South Asian fare, however, many catering companies are starting to specialize in creating plated South Asian menus with a modern twist. Payal Mehta of NJ’s Arora Hospitality / Moghul 72

Catering is one of the industry leaders and confirms that the trend of plated dinners is on the rise. Her viewpoint is that people are beginning to consider the plated dinner as an option because it offers a more personal, intimate and regal experience that a buffet simply may not impart. As simple as the option of a plated dinner may sound, there is a lot of work that goes into creating a sit-down meal. Beyond just the dishes themselves, every meal – from the appetizer to the palate cleanser – is diligently thought out and prepared, and every dish has to complement the one before and after it. South Asian flavors are being modernized to create dishes reminiscent of the past with a strong nod to the future. In the case of a plated meal, it becomes not only about the food – caterers must also consider the most suitable choice of dinnerware to enhance each course as well as ensure the entire experience ties into the theme of the wedding, the personality of the couple and the décor of the hall. Moreover, whereas a buffet is somewhat limited to a certain type of display, in the case of a plated dinner, presentation is key and, like a painting, plates are treated like a blank canvas. After all, the old adage still remains true: we eat first with our eyes. According to Payal, the plated dinner is becoming so popular that Moghul Catering now specializes in enhancing the palate with their Elevate catering division. After discussing the couple’s design direction and finalizing cuisine,

Plated Dinner

Payal’s chefs then take the time to research, experiment and test within their kitchen to create new dishes and flavors, bringing an exclusive tasting experience to the table for the bride and groom before working on larger quantity outputs. Cooking is an art and a reflection of personalities coming together, subsequently and plated dinners are aimed at expressing that celebration. In the case of the seated dinner, head count plays an even bigger role, as caterers must ensure they serve every table at the same time. Moreover, due to the difference in budget for a buffet versus a plated dinner, having the final head count helps caterers plan out their serving timelines, staffing

of all, we are inspired by our clients. We have had many couples approach us with their ‘grandmother’s secret recipe’ and they want this to be the focus of their reception. Now it’s our job to execute and complement the dish with sides to create a perfectly balanced main course.” Payal notes that some trends showing up in 2016 include personalizing the dining experience as well as incorporating healthy foods such as kale, beets and quinoa into South Asian cuisine. With people becoming more health conscious, couples are leaning toward foods that they will both enjoy and feel good about. With the abundance of such a wide variety of worldly cuisines, couples are looking to incorporate more mainstream foods such as Bao Buns into their meals, experimenting with hybrid desserts like Rasgulla Cheesecake or substituting traditional components for healthier options. In the end, creating the perfect dining experience really is about imparting your vision and working with your caterer to have them express the feel and taste of this vision. Subconsciously our taste buds associate various memories with food and couples want their guests to experience the same sense of joy and love through their meal that they are feeling on that special day, and thus creating a memory they can literally bite into! ø

needs and presentation options. A plate must be both relatively fresh and easy to assemble in order to live up to a certain elevated standard. Furthermore, the service has to be at par with the quality of the food to create the ultimate experience for the couple as well as the guests. So how can a bride and groom create a unique dining experience with distinctive fare when there are just a certain number of South Asian dishes available? This depends on how the caterer finds inspiration. For Arora Hospitality Group, their inspiration comes from everywhere. “We have employed Gujaratis, Marwadis, Punjabis, Rajasthanis, Goans – any region you can possibly think of from India. We use flavors we’ve grown up with and modernized the approach in which they are served. Our chefs love to travel and use techniques they’ve seen during their travels. Most 73

ANAAM SHAHJAHAN & LUCY CAMPBELL JANUARY 16, 2016 LUCY’S MOTHER’S GARDEN, MOSS VALE, NEW SOUTH WALES, AUSTRALIA The groom says: Lucy and I met at actress Ami Sheth’s blowout birthday party in November 2014 at the Hudson Hotel. We knew right away we were right for each other. Almost a year later, I proposed and we followed the next step of throwing a fun engagement party on Jan 16, 2016 in Australia. When the unfortunate attacks in Paris happened, we quickly came to the realization that life is precious and short, so why delay our expression of love as husband and wife. With Lucy’s mom on board, we managed to change our engagement party into the best mini engagement party plus wedding ever. Yes, we fit in an hour engagement before Lucy changed into her gorgeous Johanna Johnson wedding dress and her Jimmy Choos. During the reception, she got to wear her gorgeous Indian-styled outfit designed by Shehnaai Couture, which we had originally bought for Jan 16th. Lucky for me, I got to stay in my Hugo Boss all night! Lucy’s ideal wedding was for every guest to feel like it was indeed their own wedding party. We succeeded. We ended the ceremony with some Jai Ho by the Pussycat Dolls and yes, we did tell our guests the best way to “Bollywood” – screw in a light bulb and pet the dog! With a phenomenal band, we had everyone dancing the night away. Respecting our neighbors in the small town of Moss Vale – a town very much like one of our New England towns – we ended the party at midnight, hesitantly. Our engagement date turned into our wedding date, but there was one thing amiss. My family and the rest of the clan from New York City were unable to attend. Our fix? Another party, of course, but this one with an Indian theme. Bring on the biryani and more colors. We plan to celebrate in early summer of 2016 in the concrete jungle where big lights inspire and dreams are made. – Photos by Olguin Photography 74

RAKHI CHADHA & VINAY RAJPUT JULY 27, 2014 MELIA CARIBE RESORT IN PUNTA CANA, DOMINICAN REPUBLIC The bride says: Vinay and I were both giving up on meeting the “right person.” The day I was going to delete my profile from Shaadi.com, he contacted me and we spoke on the phone for what ended up being a five-hour conversation that had us laughing and forgetting where the time went. I got scared of the distance and he seemed too good to be true so I stopped answering his calls for awhile! Something about him kept him in my mind and I finally called him. We spoke on the phone for about three months before we finally met. After that, we took about a year and a half of getting to know each other, traveling back and forth once a month or two months. Finally, in December of 2013, I went to visit him in Chicago. He recreated our first meeting – from the famous pizza place where we ate to playing mini golf, and finally ended the day at the famous Sixteen Restaurant inside the Trump International Tower. It was the same place he took me on my first visit. When the waiter came with the dessert, my plate had a ring on it and it said, “Remember our first date?” He bent down on one knee and told me I was his best friend and he couldn’t think of anything better than asking me to marry him. I said yes and we knew right away that our story deserved a unique destination – Punta Cana. My mom said it best at our reception, “Don’t think there won’t be ups and downs in your marriage, but if both of you have a giving nature, there’s no doubt your marriage will succeed.” The advice I would give is to understand that a marriage will have some rocks on the road, but as long as you care for each other more than you care for yourself, encourage each other’s dreams and look toward your goals as a team effort, life can be an adventure that will serve as an ideal love story. – Photos by Memories Studios

PRAVINA BRAHMBHATT & SIDDHARTA ANAND NOVEMBER 21, 2015 STOTESBURY MANSION, PHILADELPHIA The bride says: Sid and I have known each other for years and although we became friends, there was initially no romantic interest. Ten years after we met, I moved back to Philadelphia at a time that perhaps Sid needed me the most. Bonded by a parallel and tragic experience of losing a parent, our friendship got stronger. We knew that once we decided this is it, it really would be it. And that’s what happened. We work well together and complement each other. We have mutual respect, a deep love and thorough understanding of each other. We love each other’s family and try to make life easy for one another. We started our wedding planning backwards: we nailed down venues, then our parents met and then Sid proposed! When he proposed, he first pulled out a pair of diamond earrings, but then he proposed with the diamond ring that his father had proposed to his mother with. We had a simple, traditional wedding for the family and then a true New Year’s Eve reception with friends. We had the wedding in a small Hindu temple, and it was extremely meaningful and beautiful. We both felt a huge gap with my mother and his father missing. It was a bittersweet event, but we both knew they were looking down at us giving us their blessings. For the New Year’s Eve event, we had a cocktail reception at the Stotesbury Mansion in Philadelphia and went with a Hollywood Glam 20s theme! We started our life and new year together with our best friends and close family and hope to continue the celebration for years to come! What I treasure the most about our relationship is that we really do not take each other for granted. It’s easy to fall into that. Don’t kill each other’s spirit. Truly thank your partner for the little things they do, say I love you often and remind them how much you value them. – Photos by Nayeem Vohra 76

SUNITHA ABRAHAM & LARRY PUTHENPARAMBIL APRIL 18, 2015 HYATT REGENCY AUSTIN, AUSTIN, TEXAS The bride says: Larry and I initially met online during the summer of 2013. We actually talked for a few months before we even met in person because he lived in Dallas and I lived in Houston at the time, and our work schedules were pretty hectic so we couldn’t meet as soon as we had hoped. As we were getting to know each other, we figured out that we had a few mutual friends, which gave me the opportunity to ask around to make sure he was actually a decent guy. Every person I had asked had nothing but good things to say about him and when I met him in person, it all turned out to be true! The proposal was a total surprise. Larry had asked me to visit him in Dallas to celebrate the completion of his program. As I was getting ready to go to dinner with him and his friends, he mentioned a few times that he would be coming to Houston the next weekend and to keep Saturday free for dinner. After the third time or so of him mentioning this, I grew suspicious and thought he may be planning on proposing. After dinner, we were on our way to meet some friends, but Larry decided to make an unexpected stop back at his place. When he opened the door and I walked in, I saw that his living room was filled with flowers and candles. He had his friends decorate the place while we were at dinner. He led me to a table that had our pictures and a scrapbook he had made for me. On the last page of the scrapbook, he wrote, “This is my first and only chance for me to be happy forever. Will you marry me?” As I looked up, he was on his knee with a ring. I was completely surprised! I am not sure if we have any expertise in marriage yet, so I rely on advice from my married friends. One of the best pieces of advice I have gotten is, “Don’t go to bed angry.” It is perfectly fine to let go of pride and apologize when you’re wrong. Remind yourself that your happiness is way more important than anything else. – Photos by William Bichara

STACY ISSAC & IRFAN AHMED FEBRUARY 12, 2016 HISTORIC HENRY MORRISON FLAGLER MUSEUM, PALM BEACH, FLORIDA The bride says: My husband and I first met at a fundraising gala held in Fort Lauderdale six years ago. Our passions brought us together: I am a professionally trained Bharatnatyam dancer, and he’s a photographer. As a former Miss India USA, I was invited to perform at the event, and he was invited as the official photographer. I have always been told that when you meet “the one,” you immediately know. I found this idea to be too cliché and discredited it. However, my first encounter with my now-husband has made me a firm believer. I am not at all romantic, but the moment I saw Irfan, I just knew. It simply cannot be explained in words. During the event, we never spoke. In fact, we were never introduced. He has very dreamy eyes, and from a distance I noticed he was being wooed by some men! To rescue him, I walked over, grabbed his hand and said, “If you all don’t mind, may I take my husband away for a picture? It’ll be just a second,” not knowing that this would be a foreshadowing of the future. It is amazing how things work out. Six years later, I can proudly hold his hand and truly call him “my husband.” Irfan is the hopeless, or as he likes to say hopeful, romantic. He planned the most beautiful proposal! He arranged for both our families to meet in New York City the day after Christmas. He took me on a date to go ice skating at Rockefeller Center, replaying our first date. The skating rink was cleared off, the Hindi song Tum Hi Ho echoed throughout the city, and as thousands looked on and cheered, he got down on one knee and asked, “Will you make me the happiest man in the world?” We had an interfaith marriage. Therefore, there was a Nikah ceremony, Sangeet, Catholic wedding and reception. It was very intimate and our guest list consisted solely of immediate family. We planned our wedding ourselves, in a short span of four months and did not have a particular theme. Irfan and I did not fixate on minor details. Our prime goal was for our families to enjoy themselves! My white wedding gown and veil are from a private bridal boutique, Bacio Bacio, in West Palm Beach. My Indian clothing was designed by myself and made into reality by SWAHA by Jewel & Shweta in Mumbai. Our advice: Elope. Just kidding! We have only been married for a few weeks, so I’m not sure if we qualify for giving marital advice. However, having known each other for six years, and with the majority of our relationship being long distance, the only way we have been able to overcome challenges is with clear communication and honesty. We are best friends and will strive to always be! – Photos by Ernesto Olivares 78

Los Cabos

San Jose del Cabo Quiet San Jose del Cabo is the eastern side of Los Cabos and serves as the seat of government for Los Cabos. The Historic District located in the town’s center radiates outward with cobblestone streets lined with Jacaranda trees. In central Mijares Square is the Mission San Jose Church, a significant historical building that is still an active Catholic church and center of the community. Nearby is La Casa de la Cultura, or House of Culture, which was once a priest’s home before being taken as headquarters for the American Army during the Mexican-US war in 1846. Today, it celebrates the arts, literature, theater and performance. For art lovers, the Historic District’s Gallery District has the second

largest collection of galleries in Mexico and hosts art walks each Thursday evening from October through June. Expect to see local artists and artisans as well as many of international fame, ArtCabo.com. Be sure to stop by the acclaimed Frank Arnold Gallery, FrankArnoldArt.com, a gallery-cum-home of the artist and perhaps one of the area’s more spectacular buildings. Besides its architecture and galleries, the Historic and Gallery Districts also have many fine-dining restaurants, “local” eateries, shopping and of course, the must-try tamale and tostada stands. Festivals are regularly held in Mijares Square and each evening, locals gather to converse, play and socialize.

Farm to Table A short (and somewhat bumpy) ride from Mijares Square is a treat for the senses. Known as Flora Farms, this working ten-acre organic farm in the

IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A WEDDING DESTINATION THAT COMBINES THE AUTHENTIC CULTURAL APPEAL OF MEXICO WITH BEAUTIFUL BEACHES AND A RAMBUNCTIOUS PARTY VIBE, LOOK NO FURTHER THAN THE DUAL DESTINATION OF LOS CABOS, LOCATED ON THE SOUTHERNMOST TIP OF BAJA CALIFORNIA SUR. LOS CABOS, KNOWN AS THE PLACE WHERE THE DESERT MEETS THE SEA, IS ACTUALLY THE COLLECTIVE NAME OF TWO TOWNS WITH DISTINCT PERSONALITIES. WHILE TRANQUIL SAN JOSE DEL CABO IS THE QUIET SISTER TO WILDER CABO SAN LUCAS, TOGETHER, BOTH TOWNS OFFER A DESTINATION WEDDING EXPERIENCE THAT INCLUDES STUNNING BEACHES, WORLD-CLASS RESORTS, GOLFING, CULTURE, SHOPPING, ADVENTURES AND SPECTACULAR VIEWS. foothills of the Sierra de la Laguna Mountains serves its harvest at its onsite Flora’s Field Kitchen, a casual dining restaurant with incredibly succulent and flavorful food. Not only is each dish prepared with ingredients fresh from the farm and nearby ranch, the presentation is nothing short of what you would find in an editorial photoshoot. Be sure to order the Pelo del Perro (Hair of the Dog), a drink similar to a Bloody Mary, made with fresh beet juice and tomato juice and topped with a garden display of fresh and pickled vegetables. Sunday brunch (starting at $36pp) is a wonderful opportunity to entertain guests after your reception, and the farm offers private dining spaces for parties from 2 to 1000 in locations like the herb garden amphitheater, lakeside lawn, hilltop altar or mango grove with its picturesque setting. Plan to spend the day at the farm with walking tours, local artisan shops, fresh groceries, live music or even a game of Bocce Ball. The farm is available for weddings and special events. see clear through to the Pacific Ocean. You may also view sea lions, pelicans and, if you are lucky and in the right season, the spectacular sight of humpback whales jumping and diving into the surface of the water. Check the website for ongoing specials as well as other land-faring adventures, Cabo-Adventures.com. After your sailing adventure, it’s time to

Cabo San Lucas Cabo San Lucas, the epicenter of party and play, is located on the southwest side of Los Cabos and its main focal point is the marina and bay. Here, you will also find the city’s most notable natural formation, El Arco or the Arch of Cabo San Lucas. This impressive structure is also known as “Land’s End” because if you drew a line directly south from the Arch, you would not hit land until the South Pole. To view the famous arch, book a sailing tour with Cabo Adventures, the city’s leading adventure company. The sailing tour begins at Cabo Adventure’s Dolphin Center, where you can swim with the dolphins in their enclosed tanks. The 4.5-hour sail on a Beneteau sailing yacht is $109 / adult and $98 / children over 8 years and includes a premium open bar, a delicious lunch, towels, snorkel equipment, stand-up paddle board and guided tour of the bay. The tour includes seeing El Arco as well as Lover’s Beach on the Sea of Cortez side and Divorce Beach on the Pacific Ocean side. You’ll also see the Pacific Window, a natural hole in the rock formation where you can

head to The Office, a beach bar and restaurant where you can wile away the hours in its lively atmosphere. Take a water taxi ($10) from the marina or walk over to enjoy fresh Mexican fare like guacamole, sea bass from the grill or octopus with ajillo sauce, TheOfficeontheBeach.com. After your time at The Office, stroll through the town’s streets browsing through the numerous souvenir shops with their pottery, tequila, blankets and Mexican hats.

On the Cliff For the more romantically inclined, be sure to make reservations at the Sunset da Mona Lisa for an experience you won’t easily forget. Hailed by the International New York Times as one of “Five of the World’s Coolest Restaurants,” Sunset da Mona Lisa is built atop a cliff overlooking the marina and serves exquisite Italian fare, specializing in seafood and wood-burning-oven pizza. Enjoy cocktails on the fire-warmed terraces as you watch the sun set over El Arco across the bay, one of the only places in all of Los Cabos where you can get such an impressive view. This utterly romantic venue is a favorite for

destination brides and can host private events from 300-person sit-down dinners to a relaxing evening with your bridal party on the stylish Taittinger Terrace, which of course serves Taittinger champagne with fresh oysters. As the sun bids its final adieu over the distant hills, the sound of the surf below serenades you as you dine on such scrumptious dishes as grilled octopus with Porcini mushrooms or tableside, lava rock-cooked Sonora beef tenderloin with spinach flan. Ask about the chef’s tasting menu and be sure to indulge in pairings with surprisingly delicious Mexican wines. SunsetMonaLisa.com

When the Night Beckons After the sun sets, Cabo San Lucas becomes party central with a bevy of bars and nightclubs ready to get your tequila on. If you’re looking for a wild night, book your bridal party on the famous Cabo Crawl, a service that gets you access to three of the hottest bars / clubs in Cabo, complete with an open bar, VIP access and table service, costing only about $80 per person. The service specializes in Bachelor / Bachelorette parties and can also provide transportation to and from your resort, CaboCrawl.com. Of course, “where the land ends and the party begins” is Sammy Hagar’s worldfamous Cabo Wabo Cantina. This party-place offers live music and entertainment every night and though you may come for the namesake tequila and signature shots, remember that they also serve decent food, CaboWaboCantina.com. For all night dancing, book a table at Mandala, MandalaNightClub.com or the celebrity-favorite, Baja Junkie, BajaJunkieCSL.com

The Perfect Backdrop Located on the resort corridor between Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo is the beautiful Sheraton Hacienda del Mar Golf & Spa Resort. One look at the approach to this architectural gem is enough to know your stay here will be unique. The Sheraton Hacienda del Mar is actually a collection of colorful buildings styled after traditional Mexican haciendas, or estates. Although the large property boasts 270 rooms, each with a Jacuzzi and private balcony or patio, the resort actually feels more intimate as the rooms are dispersed across multiple buildings set in manicured gardens along a private beach. Among the treats available at the Sheraton Hacienda del Mar is an infinity pool with a swim-up bar, kid’s pool, three other picturesque pools, beachfront access, fitness center, multiple bars and noteworthy restaurants. The resort also offers

world-class golf at Golf by Cabo del Sol with its renowned Ocean Course and Desert Course. Rounding the amenities is the Cactus Spa, an underground grotto offering a variety of treatments along with saunas, steam rooms, a Jacuzzi and two plunge pools to help you thoroughly relax and unwind. Ask about their special bride and groom packages to help you prepare for your special day. Located on the property of the Sheraton Hacienda del Mar are two five star-rated restaurants. The first is the romantic De Cortez Grill and Restaurant with its sweeping views of the Sea of Cortez and nightly live music. The Executive Chef of the hotel, Chef Manuel De Luca, overseas this restaurant and offers steak and seafood prepared to perfection. Choose to dine indoors or out under the gently swaying palm trees. The second restaurant, Pitahayas, under Chef Volker Romeike, serves Pacific Rim-infused flavors served under three huge thatched palm leaf palapas. The restaurant also includes a cigar bar featuring Cuban and Mexican varieties. As far as hosting a wedding, the Sheraton Hacienda del Mar offers a variety of gorgeous indoor and outdoor options around the property, depending on the number of guests. For a ceremony of up to 400 guests, choose a secluded portion of the beach, or perhaps gather 100 of your dearest in the on-premise chapel. Otherwise, dine poolside with a seated dinner for 300 or perhaps under the Palapa Fiesta with 150 guests. For larger weddings of up to 1000, the Hacienda Ballroom features floral mosaics, sand-colored arches, a soaring beamed ceiling and iron chandeliers. Catering comes through the hotel with Chef Manuel, whose skilled culinary vocabulary includes exceptional South Asian cuisine, Continental and, of course, delicious Mexican flavors. Beyond the reception, end your wedding with a lounge-like Sand Pit

With its two personalities, Los Cabos is an ideal location for your destination wedding. The town appeals to a variety of guests with its immense wealth of culture, cuisine, nightlife and sports. The Sheraton Hacienda del Mar, centrally located between Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo, offers the perfect venue for your guests and your events.
