Choosing your wedding style should be the first decision you make when it comes to planning your perfect day. With bridal options open to whatever you want them to be, defining your style helps you navigate the wide world of wedding options. Hence, we have designed this issue of Bibi Bridal to inspire you to do just that. Start with Inspired, page16, to find which style ideal you most relate with, and then follow that through the articles to define your perfect wedding. If you are a Classic bride, your style ideal is most like Madhuri Dixit and you have a penchant for the traditional. The Glam bride follows someone like Kareena Kapoor, complete with sparkle and drama. The Boho bride finds her eclectic style similar to the Olsen Twins and of course, the Urban bride relates most with fashion forward Sarah Jessica Parker. Finally, the more offbeat Hipster bride finds inspiration in Chloe Sevigny’s curated look. Or perhaps you’re a combination of a few styles, and that, too, is perfectly fine. Tina Sugandh and her husband Tarz, last year’s cover couple, are both glamorous and very close to their respective families. Their wedding last year was an exact reflection of their life as a couple. Why do I bring this up? Because starting the first week of May, you will be able to get a personal look at their wedding and first year of marriage with the premiere of Bravo’s newest show, “Newlyweds: The First Year.” Directed by Emmy Award-winning and Oscarnominated documentarian Lauren Lazin, the show follows Tina and Tarz, along with three other couples, as they navigate life as a married couple. It’s sure to be an entertaining and informative journey. You may also see us Bibi girls in the show as the magazine hosted the couple’s NYC wedding reception at the launch party of our 2012 issue.

The first year of marriage is a heady time for any couple, as it sets the tone for your future years. We asked Kunal Nayyar, star of the television show The Big Bang Theory, himself a newlywed, to give insight on how he and his wife, former Miss India Neha Kapoor, build their marital foundation, particularly in the public eye. “It’s all about compromise,” he says, and we couldn’t agree more, page 36. We have also featured three New York couples – actress and cover model Ami Sheth and Miraj Patel, actress and TV host Shetal Sheth and artist Vittorio Ottaviani, and singer Biba Singh and Harbir Singh – to show how these celebrity women inspire their men through their creative life and style, page 52. Living in New York City means that we see trends emerge here before anywhere else. One such trend that really excites me is the attire women attending a wedding are choosing. Although lehngas, suits and saris remain constant, western dresses and gowns are making a chic entrance. Actress Neelu Sodhi of English Vinglish fame takes couture to a new level dressed in designer Jorge Vega Umana’s latest collection straight from his FW2013 fashion show. Jorge, Nicaraguan by heritage, NYC by lease, is an emerging designer who delivers western cuts accented with beading that appeals to a South Asian sensibility. Paired with one-of-a-kind jewelry by Jyoti Kapoor, the look is sublime, page 64. When it comes to wedding design, another hot trend this year is cuisine presentation. In The Final Foodtier, page 76, we offer a look at some of NYC’s top wedding caterers and dessert chefs. From the Michelin-starred Chef Hemant of Tulsi, to the fusion cuisine of Devi and the regional flavors of Chand Palace, we show you how these leaders are redefining wedding fare. With so many brides and their fabulous vendors crafting such inspired weddings, defining your personal style through your wedding is just a matter of creativity. Now that you are a bonafide style maven, find Bibi Magazine on Facebook and upload your photos; we’d love to see your look. Who knows, maybe we’ll feature your wedding in the next issue of Bibi Bridal! Bibi Blessings!

Cut four pieces of cardstock and several pieces of paper to 5”x7”. Take two of the cardstock and trim them down by an additional ¼-inch all the way around, so that they measure 4.5”x6.5”. Cut two pieces of fabric to 6.5”x8.5” and wrap around both of the larger pieces of cardstock. Fold over the edges and glue down with the rubber cement. Next, completely cover one side of each of the smaller pieces of cardstock with rubber cement. Place sticky side down over the folded-edge side of the larger cardstock so that it covers the glued fabric edges. This will make the “cover” of your book. Cut a length of ribbon, mark its half and glue to the outside of one of the covers. Once your guests have filled out their messages on the archival paper, place them within the covers of your book and tie with the ribbon for a stack of lovely memories to be relived anytime.

Bring paradise to your entire divan with wines tailor-made exclusively to pair with South Asian cuisine. Mirza Ghalib wine, named after the prolific Urdu poet, has been crafted from French wines into three flavors, Cabernet Sauvignon (red mature fruits and spices with smooth tannins), Voignier (aromatic, dry, with touch of vanilla) and a soon-to-be-released Rosé Syrah (fruity and floral with black currant, cherry and violet). The wine’s acidity boosts complex South Asian spices while the fruits soften the heat. As Ghalib would say, “A wise man tastes the entire Tigris in every sip,” $15-$20. Sufiwines.com

Lilly’s Lessons
LILLY RIVERA, FOUNDER OF BRIDALGAL IN NYC, IS A SENIOR PRO AIRBRUSH MAKEUP ARTIST, LICENSED ESTHETICIAN AND EDUCATOR FOR OVER 35 YEARS. SHE SPECIALIZES IN MULTICULTURAL SKIN AND CLIENTS OF VARIOUS ETHNICITIES. LILLY’S WORK CAN BE SEEN IN PUBLICATIONS SUCH AS MANHATTAN BRIDE, OPRAH MAGAZINE, BRIDES, NEW YORK MAGAZINE, SPA MAGAZINE AND PEOPLE IN ESPANOL. SHE HAS BEEN FEATURED IN NUMEROUS TV SHOWS, SUCH AS “MY FAIR WEDDING” WITH DAVID TUTERA, “WHOSE WEDDING IS IT ANYWAY?”, “LATINATION” AND OTHERS.
AS A MAKEUP ARTIST AND LICENSED ESTHETICIAN, MY GOAL IS TO ACHIEVE A LOOK THAT OPTIMIZES EACH CLIENT’S UNIQUE BEAUTY. BUT THE TRUTH IS NO AMOUNT OF MAKEUP CAN COVER UP BAD SKIN, AND TOO MUCH MAKEUP WILL END UP LOOKING HEAVY, OVERDONE AND FAKE. NATURALLY RADIANT SKIN REQUIRES ONLY A LITTLE MAKEUP TO LOOK BEAUTIFUL. The first step to achieving great results is for skin to be properly cared for. When we get our skin in good shape, a professional makeup application will turn Photoshop into a thing of the past. Below are a few of my favorite skincare products that will help you smooth out that wedding day canvas for flawless photos.
For Dry, Tired Skin For me, the fewer steps to achieving great results, the better. Babor Gel and Tonic 2 in 1 Cleanser, $36, simplifies my skincare routine while still delivering results. It cleanses and tones in one simple step, making skin feel clean, fresh and soft. The salicylic acid and pansy extract help with any existing blemishes and prevent new ones from forming. The Babor Rose Toning Lotion, $30, a refreshing toner that smells like a bouquet of roses and is alcohol-free, is a must for dehydrated skin. I love using this toner right before applying moisturizer or makeup and also as a skin refresher during the day. It makes the skin more radiant and supple and is suitable for anyone who wants to pamper their skin, regardless of skin type. Moisture is an essential element for healthier and younger-looking skin and Babor Fluids FP Moist and Lipid is like a waterfall of moisture. I tried these ampoules during the winter and immediately noticed smoother, firmer skin. After just one use, the skin looks younger and more radiant, and with regular use, I noticed a great improvement in the health and texture of my skin. This is great for use prior to a makeup application as it helps the makeup glide on for a more even-toned and flawless appearance. Babor.com
Botanical Beauty Secrets from Bali Exfoliation is an essential part of achieving healthy skin, as it removes dead and dull cells that accumulate on the surface of the skin and cover up the more resilient cells underneath. Containing rice protein, an excellent softening ingredient, the Juara Rice Facial Scrub, $29, is not only a very effective exfoliant for even the most sensitive skin, it also deep cleanses the pores, leaving the skin soft without stripping it of its natural protective layer. My dehydration lines were visibly smoother, my pores were minimized and my skin glowed after just one use. For even more pampering hydration, I use the Juara Avocado Banana Moisture Mask, a creamy leave-on mask that is a great moisture boost for parched skin, leaving it supple, moist and radiant with regular use. The avocado oil nourishes and helps heal the natural moisture barrier essential for healthy, soft and resilient skin, while the banana puree softens and maintains moisture balance. For optimal results, use after an exfoliation treatment. JuaraSkinCare.com
Emergency Repair When your skin needs an immediate boost, the emerginC line of products offers a quick remedy. Vitamin C is essential for skin repair and to protect skin cells from free-radical damage caused by UVA/UVB rays and other environmental elements that subject our skin to premature aging. With one use of the emerginC Hydrarepair ampoules, my skin came alive with a healthy, radiant glow. It is potent yet non-irritating, and perfect for all skin types, including very sensitive skin. The emerginC vitality mask, $49, is a creamy nourishing mask packed with coenzyme Q10 and alpha-lipoic acid that soothes, hydrates, calms and reduces redness. For oily skin, the emerginC deglazing mask, $42.50, is a clay-based therapeutic facial mask that helps with breakouts, excess oil and exfoliation. EmerginC.com ø 24

Classic The Look: This look works best with a dupatta that has a heavy, lined border. Drape the veil on the head, bring one edge under the arm and pin on the shoulder. The other side is worn straight or pleated. Adjust the border to frame the face. The hair is pulled back higher on the crown to create an anchor for the veil. The Style: This kundan-work veil is by Vikram Phadnis. A jhumar and teeka add to this classic style. The Makeup: Rich, shimmery eyes with a medium lip keep this look in balance.
Urban The Look: Your fashion-forward style is evident in this side updo. The veil is attached under the hair and is supported by the shoulders. Crystal hair clips add sparkle. The Style: The modern cut and vibrant color of this bold lehnga underscores the urban vibe. This bustier lehnga is by Saa.n.she and is subtly accented with tone-on-tone resham work and quartz-colored crystals. The Makeup: Brightly shaded eyes and lips bring this vibrant look together.
Hipster The Look: This veil style should reflect your statement style. Instead of a typical veil worn on your head, choose a headpiece instead, and drape the veil around the shoulders. The Style: Vintage-inspired lehngas work best for this look. Think 1950s Americana. This scoop neck, sequined blouse with mango colored lehnga with zardosi peeta work is by Saa.n.she. The Makeup: Follow the vintage theme through with strong cat eyes and neon lips. 32
Glam The Look: Lots of crystals and sparkle define this look. This veil has a matha pathee, or heavy work on the crown. Lift the hair high on the crown to create dramatic appeal. The Style: Choose crystal-embellished cholis that tastefully bare more skin, like this one by Geetanjali Singh for Khubsoorat Collection. Crystal or diamond jewelry add to the glamour. The Makeup: Dark, dramatic, and lots of shine and shimmer.
Boho The Look: This veil style is the least structured of all the bridal styles. Choose a veil, preferably in easy-to-style net, with light work along the borders. Hair should be sleek to offset the free-flowing veil. Choose antique jewelry. The Style: Boho looks favor natural fabrics like silk jamevar with moghul-inspired zari work and kundan stones. This lehnga and jacket ensemble are by Vikram Phadnis. The Makeup: Softer eyes with a more dramatic lip reflect your unconventional style. ø
Wedding Traditions
Even if you did find some of the customs puzzling as they were piling up, who has time to really question the meaning when you’re so busy booking the hall, deciding on which relatives to include and which to leave out and doing everything in between? As I let my family take over the ceremonial aspects of my own wedding, I didn’t really stop to think about any of it until I overheard a conversation between my mother and the priest. They were discussing who would bring a list of items including betel nuts, rice and a coconut to the ceremony. It was then that I decided to take a little time to understand what I would be expected to be a part of and, in the process, learn about many interesting customs followed by South Asians. It turns out that the pre-wedding ceremony being discussed is called the Navagraha prayer. It is commonly practiced by both North and South Indians and involves worshipping the nine planets. Each celestial body is said to have a profound effect on a person’s life, so the gods associated with these planets are asked to bless the couple, particularly if the planets are not in favor of the bride or groom. The items used in the ceremony are equally steeped with symbolic meaning. The betel nut represents the nine planets. However, betel nuts also have different meanings in different cultures. For instance, in Maharashtra, a wife’s presence is imperative during religious rituals, but if she isn’t able to attend, a betel nut wrapped in a cloth can be used in her place. In Bengal, betel nuts are believed to carry magical properties and are placed under the pillow at night so that a person can dream of his or her future. In South Asian weddings, brides use various embellishments to enhance their beauty. In the Phoolon Ka Gehna ceremony in some Arya Samaj communities, a bride turns to the beauty in nature and adorns herself with jewelry made of flowers. 34
Also, on the day of her wedding, in a ceremony called Choodha and Nath, the bride’s maternal uncle will give her gifts of a nose ring and adorn her arms with 21 red and ivory bangles, as the number 21 and the color red are considered auspicious. She will wear these decorations in preparation of her new life. Sikh ceremonies are quite different from Hindu ceremonies in that they don’t incorporate astrology. In fact, Sikhs are generally discouraged from using astrology. They don’t believe that horoscopes should be relied upon as long as a person has faith in God. The Sikh wedding ceremony is quite simple and includes readings and hymns from the Guru Granth Sahib (holy scriptures) as well as walking around the holy scriptures four times. As the couple prepare to take their vows, the friends of the bride

WHEN IT COMES TO WEDDINGS, EVERYONE’S SUPERSTITIOUS, EVEN IF YOU’RE THE PERSON WHO WALKS UNDER AN OPEN LADDER ON PURPOSE OR DOESN’T GET A LITTLE SHIVER WHEN YOU SEE FRIDAY THE 13TH LOOMING ON THE CALENDAR. YOU CAN BET THAT WHEN YOUR WEDDING DAY DAWNS, YOU’LL BE LESS LIKELY TO TEMPT THE GODS, AND WHEN YOU’RE HANDED A KNIFE WITH THE PROMISE THAT IT WILL THWART ANY EVIL FORCES IF YOU KEEP IT WITH YOU UNTIL THE CEREMONY, YOU PROBABLY WON’T QUESTION IT. THAT’S JUST FOR STARTERS. WHEN YOUR MAKEUP ARTIST DRAWS A LITTLE BLACK DOT WITH EYELINER BEHIND YOUR EAR TO WARD OFF THE EVIL EYE, I DOUBT YOU’LL WASH IT OFF. By Anju Krishnakumar
have some preparing of their own to do. It is their job to steal the groom’s shoes, also known as Joota Chupai, as soon as he takes them off for the ceremony. The groom’s friends, in return, try to prevent this from happening. If the groom’s shoes are stolen, he can only get them back when he agrees to give the bride’s friends the sum of money they demand. This lighthearted tradition, which happens across South Asian cultures, gives both sides an opportunity to interact and get to know each other better as they will now be a part of each others’ lives. In traditional arranged Muslim weddings, it was common for the bride to be in purdah and for the couple sometimes never to have met until after the nikah, or wedding ceremony. This makes the first time they see each other particularly special, and this first meeting is marked with a romantic tradition called the Arsi Mushaf. A veil is spread over the head of the bride and the groom. The groom is given an arsi, or mirror, and sees his new wife for the first time in this reflection, blessed by the presence of the Quran. The groom is then asked to use his right
index finger, known as the kalmey-ki-ungli, to write the protective holy verse from the Quran, Surah-al-Ikhlas, on his wife’s forehead. As I read about various wedding traditions, it seemed like many ended with a ritual to welcome the bride into her new family. Sindhi weddings end with the Datar, or salt ceremony. When the bride and groom have finished their rounds around the fire in the traditional Hindu fashion, the bride sits down beside her husband with a tray of salt in the middle. She picks up salt by cupping both hands and places it in the hands of her husband, who then passes the salt back to her without spilling any. This is repeated three times, and the bride then passes the salt to her new father-in-law, mother-in-law and each person from the groom’s family. Exchanging salt symbolizes that the bride will blend in with her new family just as salt blends in with food. The list of South Asian wedding traditions are endless because of all the religions, ethnicities and cultures that exist in the region. But one thing they all have in common is that the ceremonies are filled with rituals and celebration and remain one of the most important events in life. ø

Kunal Nayyar’s
Big Bang Marriage WHEN KUNAL NAYYAR FIRST MET MODEL AND FORMER MISS INDIA NEHA KAPOOR AT THE OPENING OF A FRIEND’S BAR IN NEW DELHI IN 2008, HE KNEW AT FIRST SIGHT THAT HE WOULD MARRY THE TALL BEAUTY. “I MEAN SHE IS HOT, AND I WANTED HER PHONE NUMBER… THAT WAS THAT,” HE SAYS. By Ayesha Hakki
The Big Bang Theory is an incredible success. How has that been for you? It’s unbelievable – six-and-ahalf years for the show, 20 million viewers – it’s a dream. As an actor, you can be very pessimistic just trying to get your next 36
job. But to be on the show, not only for one, or two, or three, but six-and-a-half seasons, it’s unbelievable. This will probably be the most important event of my life in terms of my acting career. It always will be. It feels like it is happening to someone else. It is difficult to believe it is happening to me. Sometimes, it is a very difficult thing to be in the moment when something so huge is happening around you. And I know when it’s over, I will go back and say, ‘Wow, what a journey.’ But right now, it’s all about the work – waking up in the morning and showing up for work, doing the best I can, nailing every take, making sure I am there for my cast mates. Are you a nerd in real life? You must get asked this question quite often. There are things that I am nerdy about just like there are things everyone is nerdy about: like a jock in high school who plays fantasy football – he’s a nerd about fantasy football. If you’re playing video games all day, I mean you’re nerdy about video games. There are things I love: Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones… I love Star Wars, things like that. I am also nerdy about sports and sport statistics. I like cricket and basketball and now I am obsessed with American football. I love looking at stats, reading about all that stuff. I never got into comic books, except Archie comics, Archie comics are so cool. I was never into Sci-Fi stuff. I love music; I am a big nerd about music, so, yeah. You got married over a year ago, how has the first year been for you guys? It has been pretty good, you know. Every marriage is different and there is no secret formula. When you are married, you have to compromise things that you didn’t have to compromise when you were single or even when you are dating. If you understand that you are willing to compromise with certain things, then you

Sure enough, three years of a long-distance relationship later, she in India and he in Los Angeles, the couple wed on December 22, 2011 in New Delhi in a six-day celebration attended by over 1000 guests. Both Kunal and Neha are Hindu Punjabi and held a traditional Punjabi wedding that included the Sangeet and Mehndi nights, as well as the actual ceremony and a lavish reception. The Londonborn, Delhi-raised and US-educated star even arrived atop a white horse with his baraat, a fact, he says, terrified him. Today, the couple share a home in Los Angeles, where Kunal continues his work with one of the nation’s most watched shows, The Big Bang Theory, as astrophysicist Rajesh Koothrappali. This role is his first as a regular on a television series and most recently, he played the voice of Gupta in Ice Age: Continental Drift. Adjusting to married life, Kunal admits he’s had some learning to do, but with the obvious love he has for his wife, he says it’s the happiest he’s ever been. Here, he shares his life and his marital advice.
will always be happy! You know what I mean. If you are the kind of person who wants all things your own way, then you are not going to be happy. So it’s about compromise? Yes. I think we found a very good balance and when we continue to find a good balance, then I think that’s what good marriages are about. I had to learn how to communicate in a way that I never understood. I had to learn to tell my wife everything that happened at the end of the day or when I come home, in a sense. If someone calls me on the phone and I am talking about something that she would like to know about, I may forget because I am not used to bouncing every single thing that happens off her. It is something I am still learning. You guys were in a long distance relationship? Yes, for three years on different continents, from India to America. The beauty of that was falling in love over the telephone. It was really fun and it was quite intimate. There is nothing like sitting there, iPad to iPad, or TV, watching a movie; you literally have to talk everything over the phone. It was a lovely way to get to know my wife because you get to know someone very intimately. Tell us about the wedding? It was a huge affair, six days, over 1000 people. I wish I could go back to my wedding as a guest. I would have had more fun. In the sense that when we were getting married, there was no more than a second to breathe. And I was so sober during my own wedding… I didn’t have time even to have a drink. All my cousins and friends were dancing, having a great time, and I was like, ‘Hello auntie, Namaste,’ you know what I mean. But it was wonderful. I couldn’t have asked for any better. When Neha came out in that dress, I will never forget that moment. She looked like a vision. I live with her and so I see her when she wakes up in the morning, when she goes to sleep, I see her when she’s sick, but when she dresses up… it is something I’ve never seen before, she is the most beautiful girl. 38
How has it been for both of you, her adjusting to being in the States and both of you in your marriage? It is not like it’s been easy, but it’s not like it’s been difficult. We have a very good life, we have everything we need, we have great friends, all those things have come easily, but other things like missing your family, missing your friends. It is the longest that she has been away from her family at one given time in her life, almost a year. So little things that you take for granted when you leave home that you remember, like it’s 3pm and you are sitting at home and think, ‘I’d like to go to my best friend’s home for coffee,’ but that person is in India. Is she working? She is beginning to work. She is doing a bunch of things. She is going to get back into modeling and she is designing a label, a fashion label for western clothes. When you are a normal married couple, the first year of adjustment is challenging, but when you are in the spotlight, it must be difficult just being who you are, being so recognized walking down the street? We both love it. It’s amazing obviously when you love someone and see them doing something they love to do, then they get recognition for it, you love it too. When she gets recognized in India, I love it. We are very good supporters of each other, and I don’t think that she minds at all. Our fans have been amazing, whenever, wherever I go, people love the show, so it’s amazing for both of us. Ø
The First Year
of Marriage
THE WEDDING TAKES A LOT OF PLANNING, BUT THE MARRIAGE IS WHERE THE HARD WORK BEGINS. AFTER THE LAST PRESENT IS UNWRAPPED AND THE FINAL THANK YOU NOTE IS SENT, THE REAL BUSINESS OF BUILDING A LIFE TOGETHER BEGINS. ALTHOUGH THE TIME IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE WEDDING IS CONSIDERED THE “HONEYMOON” PERIOD, LEARNING TO DEAL WITH CONFLICT AND ADJUSTMENT EARLY CAN LEAD TO A SUCCESSFUL MARRIAGE. STUDIES HAVE SHOWN THAT THE PATTERNS SET IN THE FIRST YEAR DICTATE THE COURSE OF THE YEARS TO COME. By Amruta Gadgil
Merging Families and Expectations One of the first things that changes after the wedding is the size of your family. Hollywood hasn’t always depicted in-laws in the best of light – think Jane Fonda in Monster-In-Law – but in reality, in-laws and extended family can be a boon. When Rekha and Neil were engaged, it was clear she would be moving to his hometown. He is a doctor with an established profession and it was easier for her to relocate her job as assistant high school principal. However, in a new town with few friends, the young wife found herself stressed out, clouding over the excitement of their new marriage. She struggled with finding a job and building a new life. Moving within three miles of her in-laws made her transition easier and she was grateful for their support. “They knew the transition was difficult and were patient as I settled in. This Rekha and Neil was huge as they let our relationship grow naturally. As a result, we have a close relationship [with each other],” she says. “Expectations can play a big part in changes after marriage, and if not discussed, these thoughts and feelings will fester and come out in some way, typically negatively,” says Tanvi Patel, a Texas-based Licensed Professional Counselor specializing in working with couples and family therapy. Rekha was fortunate that her in-laws were supportive, but this may not be the case in every marriage. Add in extended family and the potential challenges grow. 40
In every family, there are defined roles and ways of doing things, so finding where you fit in and how to manage expectations is key. A common issue among South Asian couples stems from “a difference in roles from one spouse’s family of origin to the family they married into. For example, if one spouse is accustomed to speaking up for themselves, a couple may encounter discord if that spouse is not given [this] opportunity after marriage. Being able to calmly share your point of view without placing blame, how being excluded makes you feel and solutions that keep your partner’s point of view in mind, is an effective way to resolve the conflict,” explains Patel. South Asian couples have the added responsibility of trying to balance the role of being ‘Indian’ and also ‘American,’ which can be draining. “It’s almost like ‘I am this person at home and I am this person at work,’” she says. “Expectations can increase dramatically from immediate to extended family. This sometimes unforeseen factor can add stress on a new couple still barely adjusting to each other. Discussing how to manage each family’s expectations and working together as a team can vastly change the outcome of this discussion,” says Patel. Finding a solution that satisfies both individuals is essential.
Sharing Spaces and Finances When Anita, a writer and actress in Chicago, and Neil, an Air Force Officer in North Carolina, were introduced at a wedding, his cousin was sure they would make a great couple. Soon after the event, the two began emailing and after their first phone call, lasting over six hours, Neil knew Anita was the one. They dated for four years, shuttling between the two cities, and then between New York City and Washington, DC respectively, after they moved. After the wedding, Neil relocated to Manhattan,
listen to each other and value each other’s opinions and that’s how we make it work,” adds Anita.
Communicating through Distances
Anita and Neil and after an entire relationship spent in different cities, the couple faced the challenge of sharing a space for the first time. Anita and Neil also didn’t realize how hard it would be to find a home together that would fit the ideals of both, and then create a space in which both of their likes and dislikes were taken into consideration. “It was certainly a challenge to find the perfect home for both of us in Manhattan,” says Anita. “Once we overcame that challenge came things like the décor [and] furniture. This took a lot of collaboration as we wanted to ensure that it reflected both of us.” Patel suggests dealing with moving in by “giving yourselves time to adjust to each other. Take time to effectively live in a shared space, to make mistakes and to learn to work past those mistakes. It’s helpful to review what you’ve gotten used to while living away from your spouse and how you will readjust when you reunite.” And after the challenge of moving in, Anita and Neil also had to learn to make financial decisions together. “Now that we are a couple, we obviously share the same investments, and we make financial decisions together. That was the change. We were both financially stable going into the marriage and we truly believe that’s important for every couple.” And this is a major truth after marriage: Couples must learn to manage their assets together. Whether it’s joint accounts or separate investments, both spouses need to feel comfortable. “We make sure to
As a newlywed, the natural inclination is to spend as much time with each other as possible. But for some couples, living apart, even just temporarily, is sometimes the hand they are dealt. After a rough start for Kevin Rego, a Television Sales and Marketing Executive at B4U in London, in which his friend’s sister, unaware of a matchmaking attempt by her brother, shot Kevin down when he called her for her friend’s number. Kevin wanted nothing to do with the girl, but on his friend’s insistence, Kevin tried calling once more, months later, and was introduced to Sonali Vaidya, an IT professional in New York City. As soon as they met, they knew immediately they were going to marry. Kevin returned to London but couldn’t be away from Sonali, so he moved to New York for a few months, until they tied the knot in August, 2012. On a temporary visa to the US, however, Kevin had to return to London after the wedding, and the two have since spent their married life living on two different continents, with plans for him to move to New York City as soon as possible. They have made a strong effort to communicate as much as possible, but it’s been challenging to not be together during this phase of their life. Patel acknowledges the challenge in long distance marriages, “Being far apart can leave a lot to the imagination and the relationship vulnerable. Not only is it easier to fill in the blanks incorrectly, but it can create emotional distance as well.” She suggests bridging these distances and focusing on healthy and regular communication. However difficult the temporary separation, Kevin, ironically, feels their relationship has grown due to their commitment to regular communication. “The long gaps were terrible, but the distance has helped in an odd way. In the eight months we’ve been together, the spark is very much alive. We grab every minute of our time together.” Patel suggests that in situations in which spouses cannot be together, they make a point to have their feelings heard in an open environment. “If one spouse is feeling lonely, talk about what can help ahead of time, so the other spouse has options ready to use to reconnect. The best way to maintain and strengthen your relationship is to continue to have genuine discussions about how you feel, what isn’t working and what you need.” But distances can grow in any marriage. “I think people become comfortable after marriage and begin taking things for granted or making assumptions. The addition of stressors such as 41
Kevin and Sonali
42
financial, work, childrelated or family-related responsibilities, with little or no coping skills for these stressors can exacerbate the couple’s relationship,” says Patel. Each relationship is unique, but there are guidelines she believes all couples should follow. • Avoid misunderstandings by clarifying expectations, not only in everyday issues like housework, but also in finances, marital roles and childcare. • Share life goals honestly, especially in the early days. “Many of these conversations, left unspoken, can cause heated debates. If you have a difference of opinion, take a balanced approach to dealing with conflict. Try to avoid blaming statements like, ‘You always do this.’ Instead say, ‘I feel’ or ‘I think’.” • Open up to your spouse’s perspective and take even a small portion of responsibility for the issue you are accountable for. • If things get too heated, take a 20-minute break by doing an unrelated activity like watching television. But, “be sure to revisit the conflict and continue the discussion,” advises Patel.
“What can help are open discussions, maintaining trust and commitment, nurturing a positive view of your spouse, accepting their interactions and the ability to repair conflicts.” The first year of marriage for Anita and Neil flew by so quickly that the couple wishes they had documented all the special times in a diary. Their advice for married couples is to realize that “you are each other’s biggest support and your companion will be the only one by your side till the end.” Asked if she would do anything differently, Rekha only wishes she had spent less time worrying about her move to a new city, “I was so stressed about [finding a job and settling in], our first months were clouded by it.” Kevin also feels he wouldn’t do anything differently. His only advice is that if you meet someone that doesn’t fit your relationship criteria, but you feel they’re the right person, go with your gut. Despite the challenges in their situation, Kevin feels he and Sonali continue to find so many things in common as they build their life together. In tough times, these common grounds are the threads that unite and keep the relationship strong. Taking the time to nurture the first year of your marriage can lead to a lifetime of success. ø

A Photo Finish THE WEDDING MAY LAST ONLY A FEW DAYS, BUT WITH THE RIGHT PHOTOGRAPHER AND VIDEOGRAPHER, THE MEMORIES WILL LAST FOREVER. WHEN CHOOSING THE TEAM TO DOCUMENT YOUR WEDDING, IT’S IMPORTANT TO KNOW WHAT YOU WANT, WHAT YOU’RE BEING OFFERED AND WHAT YOU SHOULD BE GETTING. There’s nothing better than meeting your photographer in person. If that’s not possible, a conference or video call is the best way to do this. Couples should consider it as a consultation and friendly chat with their potential wedding experts. As you talk to the photographer, you will likely pick up new ideas and go over the things that may or may not work on your wedding day. This is also a good time to discuss the photography style you are looking for. The photojournalistic approach is trending these days, along with more fashion-themed, editorial portrait photo shoots. Photojournalistic photography is a more candid style of shooting where photographers and videographers are able to capture candid moments instead of interfering and drawing attention toward themselves during events. For editorial portrait sessions, it’s a good idea to have a planned photo shoot either before or after the wedding so you can take your time to capture your shots.
What to Expect All weddings are unique, and South Asian weddings often vary in the number of events, days and hours needed to be captured, so it’s important to find a photographer who can customize their packages. You should visit the photographer and go over your day in detail with them. If, for some reason, this is not possible, you should send them as much information as possible so they are aware of the schedule and flow of your events. Also, consider sending headshots of your closest friends and family so the photo/video team will be able to spot them right away at the festivities.
Before you book a photographer, it is important to ask which individual will be there on the wedding day. Some companies will have sample books to show you their capabilities, but it’s important to know the talents of the person who will actually be covering your event. This is why you may want to insist on meeting with the photographer and seeing samples of their work before signing them for your wedding. Once you decide on a photographer, make sure the contract states his or her name clearly on it. And make sure that the individuals you choose carry back-up equipment, including cameras, batteries and extra memory cards. It is highly recommended to have two photographers and two videographers. An additional photographer and videographer offer not only another perspective, but more comprehensive coverage. This gives you more options when it comes to selecting images for your wedding album. The same goes for the videographer, as the editor will have more options to play with while putting everything together. And be sure to find out who will be the main photographer, so you know who should be at the forefront at all events.
Proposed Timeline Pre-wedding or engagement shoots can help a couple through the photography process prior to their wedding. This helps you understand and create a rapport with your photographer and makes it easier for you to have your pictures taken on the wedding day. You can use these pre-wedding photos on your wedding or social networking sites, print

them for display at the wedding and use them to create personalized products such as a guest book. On the day of the wedding, almost all couples have their photographer present while they are getting ready, generally when the bride’s hair and makeup are almost done. Most couples don’t have an issue seeing each other before the wedding, so the portrait session may be the next thing on the list. This would be followed by a few journalistic and portrait-style shots with the bridal party. The planned photo shoot can end with pictures with the immediate family. The next thing is usually the baraat. From this point onwards, until a second portrait shoot that covers the couple and their immediate family in their reception outfits, everything is captured in the moment, unless the couple wants some posed photos with extended family after the ceremony. After the reception shoot, candid coverage is generally done for the rest of the night. At any point, the bride and groom should be able to request pictures with their friends, colleagues or extended family.
the type of image, various kinds of enhancements are made to the selected pictures. We also do custom-designed storybook albums (made in the US) and our staff works closely with brides to ensure their vision is integrated in the design of the album. Finally and most importantly, when choosing a photography and videography team, you should always feel comfortable with the individuals you will be dealing with and the package you are getting. You should feel enough at ease to express what you are looking for and any concerns, and you should always speak up if you feel something is not right. After all, there are no retakes when it comes to weddings, and you should rest easy in knowing that the team you have chosen respects you, knows your style and has your best interest in mind. ø
Retouching and Albums Since a printed image always looks better than something on a computer screen, brides should make sure they are getting at least one album in their package, as these books get expensive to add à la carte. Most photographers push for quantity and promise thousands of digital images, but very few talk about the quality of the photos that go into the album. In a few years, when you want to revisit your day, you will do this by looking at your wedding album instead of browsing through thousands of images on a computer. Although not all photographers offer this service, at House of Talent, all of the images that clients choose for the album are carefully retouched by our photo editors. Depending on 47

Ravi, a tank commander for the US Army, and Meeta, a global management consultant for a Houston-based company, met through Ravi’s parents – who happened to know Meeta’s aunt and uncle. At their initial meeting, organized by the families, Meeta had said “no” to the arrangement, but with enough advocacy from friends and family, she began to change her mind. After Ravi returned from his thirteen-month stint in Afghanistan, he got down on one knee in front of everyone to ask for Meeta’s hand in marriage. She was overwhelmed with joy and surprise, so much so that Ravi had to ask her twice, because she was crying so much. The proposal came as an absolute shock to Meeta, who didn’t think Ravi would propose so quickly, but nonetheless, her answer was certainly yes! The couple had envisioned a destination wedding, however with Meeta being the first grandchild on her father’s side to get married, the wedding had to take place in her hometown of McAllen, Texas. The couple had no specific theme in mind, however both desired simplicity and elegance for their wedding festivities. Also, due to their busy work schedules, the couple was unable to travel abroad for their wedding necessities, so they opted for everything to be as local as possible. Their three-day wedding celebration started off with a Pithi and Mehndi (on the same night), from Meeta’s side of the family. The next day, a Sathak and welcome dinner, held at Valencia Event Center in McAllen hosted a Mediterranean theme brimming with colorful lanterns and sofas. The welcome dinner was such a significant event for Ravi and Meeta, as it was one of the few moments they had to mingle informally with one another. During the welcome dinner, crisp and refreshing beverages, ranging from coconuts (with straws in them) and sugar-cane juice, were served to guests. The Heartbeats, a Houston-based band, regaled guests
by playing all the latest hits, and some oldies for the music-loving Meeta. The wedding festivities closed with a simple and elegant ceremony and reception, which was just what the couple had dreamed of. As a personal touch, Ravi had pre-recorded his vows to Meeta, which were played during the entrance of Meeta’s brothers and bridesmaids. Meeta’s pre-recorded vows to Ravi played as she walked into the mandap, wearing a custom-designed outfit by Dallas-based designer Prashe. Meeta had mentioned she wanted sparklers at the wedding and her brother went one better with full fireworks at the reception following the ceremony. As the couple walked onto their outdoor platform, music reverberated and fireworks burst in the air. “It was the most amazing thing Ravi and I experienced,” says Meeta. Afterward, everyone went inside to a pre-planned program, delineated by the couple, followed by dancing. “Ravi and I were so happy that all of our friends and family were there to celebrate our special day with us,” says Meeta. Ravi looked debonair in a Hugo Boss suit for the reception – a change from his customary army attire. Meeta made sure to pay homage to his service in the US army with a cake topper that was personalized with Ravi’s military outfit including his exact rank with all his medals and cords,” as well as a replica of Meeta’s reception outfit (MilitaryCakeToppers.com). Their wedding guestbook was engaging, to say the least—as guests were prompted to write endearing messages on Jenga blocks. Additionally, Meeta’s dad took many of their engagement photos and added an amazing, personal touch by creating diminutive posters that were pasted onto light poles and elevators at each hotel in which wedding guests were staying. Due to their careers, Ravi and Meeta have yet to go on their honeymoon, but they intend to go to Thailand together in December 2013. – Elvia Francis

Asha Dhuka and Faisal Momin Houston, April 6, 2012 Phil Collins once sang, “You Can’t Hurry Love,” and that’s exactly what Asha Dhuka and Faisal Momin believed when they met while working together on a service project in Houston. Soon after, a romance blossomed and they started exclusively dating one another. After about six years, however, they finally took the leap forward into matrimony. The couple initially debated between a small, intimate wedding and a larger-than-life, exorbitant one… eventually deciding on a large wedding with an Arabian theme, but with an intimate ambiance. Their three-day celebration took place with a Mehndi the first night, Sangeet the second and concluded with a reception. The Mehndi and Sangeet were celebrated with close friends and family and included dance performances from family members. On a side note, their respective families began rehearsing the performances several weeks prior to the wedding festivities, with family members traveling to Houston to celebrate with the couple. The colorful festivities included multicolored draping and coordinated costumes. Asha wore an elaborately designed ensemble that was handmade in Pakistan. She worked closely with the designer on the intricate patterns and woven work. Her jewelry consisted of a jhumar, teeka, jhumka hoop earrings and bangles. For the wedding both Asha and Faisal chose to dress in more subdued and elegant outfits. He wore a dark suit while she complimented him in an all
white crochet sari worn with a three-strand pearl set. Similarly, their wedding décor included deep colors from dark blues to purples, accented by pink and orange, synonymous with the Arabian theme while billowing white drapings converted the grand space into the intimacy of a circular, tent-like enclosure. Large centerpieces of Moroccan lanterns and palm trees where accented with larger palm trees stationed throughout the venue hall. The stage was filled with Moroccan artifacts and drapings. The couple’s grand reception, which was held inside Bayou City Event Center’s Lakeview Room boasted a traditional South Asian menu served buffet style with separate food stations interspersed in between. During the cocktail hour, guests enjoyed finger foods and fresh juice, and the astounding dessert bar at the end of the meal featured over 50 desserts, ranging from milk and cookie shooters, to fondue, to fresh fruit sculptures, to gulab jamun pops. The wedding reception was very intimate, especially the cake-cutting ceremony, which consisted of only close family and friends. The couple spent the evening mingling with guests and enjoying their special day. Asha and Faisal live in Jersey City, NJ, where Asha works as a doctor, and Faisal as a health administrator in New York City. Their careers took them up north shortly after their wedding, though they intend to return to Houston in the near future, where both their families remain. – Elvia Francis

SHETAL AND VITTORIO Shetal Shah is an actress and a TV host who has been seen on stage, in movies like Loins of Punjab Presents and Arya and has hosted shows for ARY and AVS. Vittorio Ottaviani is an internationally renowned fine-arts painter with a focus on socio-realistic themes like racism, corporate greed and homelessness. In fact, one of his paintings was chosen to represent the Occupy Wall St. movement in NYC. Of course, when two artists meet, the result is a mélange of unconventional happenings, so when Vittorio asked Shetal if she wanted to take a trip from the dinosaurs to the moon for their first date, she had no choice but to find out what he had in store. The two spent a starry-eyed day at the Museum of Natural History and walked about the city, but when they discovered they shared a love for the food at Café Mogador, they knew it was meant to be. That day, after Vittorio dropped Shetal to her theatre rehearsal, she watched him walk away and knew she couldn’t wait for him to return. The two artists felt they complemented each other in all the right ways and continued to go for long walks and share their love for the arts together. After a Russell Peters show at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, Vittorio surprised Shetal with a ring and a question. They decided on a small, quiet civil ceremony on 12/12/12, but as luck would have it, they said their “I dos” at exactly 12:12pm, which landed them in the NY Post and The Daily News! In the summer of 2013, they plan to celebrate with their family and friends with a traditional Indian wedding ceremony and lavish reception where the two hope to have a few tiger cubs running free around the venue. Each of them comes from a distinct culture—he is Italian, she is Indian—where food is a big deal. As a result, the two share a passion for cooking and they spend hours trying to discover the perfect masala ravioli or linguini kadhi together. Aside from their love for food and cooking, the artists inspire each other with their talks of social issues, politics and the art world. She serves as his muse while he provides her with a very New York-defined, artistic lifestyle.

AMI AND MIRAJ Model and actress Ami Sheth has played many roles in her career, including being seen in TV shows like Blue Bloods and One Life to Live and in commercials for wellknown brands such as Ethan Allen and Subway. But her biggest role is yet to come as wife to Hedge Fund Analyst Miraj Patel. When the two met at a wedding held in New Jersey on opposite sides of the wedding party, they could never fathom that their mothers had grown up together in Anand, Gujarat, and had not seen each other since high school. This chance meeting of their mothers after so many years, and the closeness of their two families across many generations in Gujarat, could not help but create an immediate bond between the two, and a short time later, they began dating. One day, when Ami’s agent called her to an evening photo shoot on a boat in the Hudson River

The Siren and the Sailor
BIBA AND HARBIR Punjabi pop singer Biba Singh has been performing since she was a child. When she grew up, Daler Mehndi, a family friend, suggested to her parents that it was time for the young singer to record her first pop album. So, in 2009, with the help of Mika Singh, Biba released “Biba” and two short years later, Bappi Lahiri launched her second album, “Biba for You.” Her music career has had her traveling regularly between India and New York and it was on one of these trans-Atlantic flights that Biba would come face-to-face with her destiny. Foreign Exchange Trader Harbir Singh had been asked by his boss to move up his flight to Mumbai 58
by one day. Not pleased with his seat near the cockpit, Harbir asked to be moved to a seat further back. As fate and an overbooked flight would have it, Biba ended up being upgraded to First Class and was assigned the seat next to Harbir. When the two began talking, they learned they were both Punjabi Sikhs from New York, and were surprised they had never met before. A 15-hour conversation passed like the blink of an eye, and when the plane landed in Mumbai, they exchanged contact information and went their separate ways. But this connection was different, and neither of them could forget the ease with which they had spent such a long flight together. For two months, though the two sent only sparse emails and neither thought anything would happen between them, they simply could not forget each other. Biba told her friends about this beautiful chance meeting, and when Harbir told his mom he thought he was in love, she told him to go back to New York and get the girl of his dreams. So he did. And thus began a beautiful courtship. One New Year’s Eve 2012, Biba’s family was hosting their annual “Singh Family Home New Year’s Bash.” The sly Harbir had already asked Biba’s parents for permission to ask for her hand, and at the stroke of midnight, while everyone was welcoming the new year, Biba noticed a circle being formed around her and Harbir. Sure enough, he proposed with the most heartfelt words and beautiful diamond ring, and the normally gregarious singer could only reply with one word… yes! Today, the couple enjoys traveling, an interest in international cuisine and of course, a love of music. They are planning an intimate June 2013 wedding ceremony on solid ground to continue what began serendipitously in midair. ø

on a July evening, she accepted the contract. Ami arrived to a stylist and photographer, who dressed and prepped her for the photo session. But 30 minutes into the shoot, music began blaring from the sound system and Miraj appeared on deck, on one knee. Ami says, “After my initial shocked reaction of: ‘What are you doing here, I am working!’, it hit me – something, THE something is happening!” The whole thing had been part of Miraj’s elaborate plan! After docking on dry land, a car awaited to whisk them to a private five-course dinner and wine pairing for two in a wine cellar filled with hundreds of roses. But the surprises were not over – Miraj sent Ami home to pack because they were leaving the next day on a four-day trip to Costa Rica! The couple’s destination wedding is slated for Memorial Day 2013 in the Mayan Riviera, Mexico, with a second reception to be held in New Jersey, where Ami’s family lives. Ami and Miraj share a love of travel, theatre and spending time with friends and family. They recently moved to an apartment together in Manhattan’s Soho and are busy planning the wedding and furnishing their new home. They are excited to carry on in New York the relationship their families have shared for generations in Gujarat.

WE CAUGHT UP WITH NEELU AT DEVI IN NEW YORK CITY ON HER HEADY RIDE TO FAME. When did you decide to be an actor? It’s something I’ve always wanted to do. My diaries as a child and essays I wrote for school projects all reveal how I wanted to be an actress when I grew up! I didn’t decide to be one till much later in life though. I find the art of acting truly fascinating and admire people who have achieved success in such a difficult field. How was it working with Sridevi, a style icon herself? It was an amazing experience working with such a legendary actress. Nerve-racking initially, but she was very sweet and made me feel very comfortable on set! There were many funny things that happened on set that made us just laugh and it helped to break the ice! What style do you most relate to? I love fashion so I would say it all depends on my mood and how creative I can get with my clothing and accessories. I wouldn’t say I have one particular style, but I do relate to Glam the most. What do you think defines style? I think style is defined by each person’s character and not by designer labels. And I also don’t think your body size defines style. To have style, I think you need to 64
know what clothes fit your body type the best and flatter you the most. And the most important thing to remember is to accessorize! Wear your clothes with confidence and don’t let the clothes wear you! Who is your style icon? I can’t say I have one particular style icon. There are so many people who have outstanding fashion sense! The first name that pops up is of course Coco Chanel, who clearly paved the way for fashion. Lately, I just love Rihanna’s style. It’s funky, edgy, sexy and most importantly, it’s her own. I like Kate Moss’ style, as well. Who would be your ideal man? My ideal man would be someone who is family-oriented, wellread, well-traveled and knows how to keep things light and positive! Where would your ideal wedding be held? Barcelona! I recently hosted for a wedding show out there and I had the opportunity to visit many different venues and absolutely fell in love with that city! The restaurants are amazing, I love the beaches and the nightlife, music and culture – not to mention the people are so friendly. It’s really the perfect mix for a wedding destination! ø

YOU’RE ENGAGED! AFTER SETTING THE DATE, YOUR NEXT QUEST IS TO FIND THE PERFECT VENUE. BEFORE YOU START THE SEARCH, IT IS IMPORTANT TO COMPOSE A GUEST LIST FOR EACH EVENT. THEN, REVIEW THE LIST AND DETERMINE THE ESTIMATED NUMBER OF GUESTS THAT WILL ATTEND. THIS IS THE NUMBER YOU WILL BE WORKING WITH THROUGHOUT THE PLANNING PROCESS. OTHER THINGS TO DISCUSS ARE ELEMENTS THAT WILL IMPACT YOUR SPACE REQUIREMENTS, SUCH AS BUFFETS, FOOD STATIONS, TABLE SIZES, BAR SERVICE, DESSERT AREAS AND DANCE FLOOR. Will the event be casual or formal; will you need seating for all guests and a separate cocktail hour space? Being an educated consumer can save you a lot of work and money. Understanding the proper size of space for your events is next. Knowing how many square feet your events require will help narrow your search. You will make a lot of wasted trips to venues if you are only looking at websites that state the number of guests they can accommodate. These numbers don’t account for dance floor size, stages, aisles or other elements. Often, clients say, “They told me it could hold 500 guests,” as we see guests squeezing between tables with plates of food. Asking the square footage of the room will provide a guideline of the workable space.
How Will Thy Dine? Knowing the size of the dining tables is important. To ensure comfort, test out the seating. Are you comfortable? A general rule: measure the table and add four feet to account for the movement of chairs. Getting creative with table arrangements is a money-saving way to add visual interest to a venue. Depending on the style of chairs, a 72”-round table will seat 10 guests, with a maximum of 12. Square footage recommended is 10’x10’ minimum 70
per table. If using a plate charger and full place setting, a table will only accommodate 10 places. Sixty-inch round dining tables seat 8 guests comfortably, with a maximum of 10. Square footage required is 9’x9’ minimum space. Long tables have become the new rage. Common banquet tables, either 6’- or 8’- long, are usually 30” wide, which is not wide enough for a standard place setting (minimum of 12-14 inches deep) to be placed across from each other and to still accommodate a centerpiece. The option is to make it double or 1.5 times wide with the use of a classroom table (usually 6’x18”). With these options, you can comfortably seat 3 guests per side on a 6-foot table and 4 guests per side on an 8-foot table, without chairs on the ends. When choosing these options, be sure the legs of the table will not hit your guests’ knees.
Dance Floor Dilemma Dance floor space is important. First, consider that a number of guests will leave after dinner and base the dance floor size on the number of remaining dancing guests. It is important to the success of your event to have the right size dance floor, which will be a big determinant in choosing the correct venue. The rule of thumb is 3 sq.ft. of dance floor per guest. Most dance floors are interlocking 3’ squares. So an 18’x18’ dance floor will be enough for 100 guests, and a 21’x21’, for 150-200. Be sure to observe the condition of the floor. What color is it; what material is it made of; is it clean, scratched, slippery and are the edges finished? You may need to add a budget item for a replacement dance floor. Choosing your Just-Right Venue
changing the shape! The dance floor covers a lot of space in the room and can be a key design element.
The World is a Stage Whether it is for the mandap, the couple to sit on, a cake area or DJ, this space needs to be allotted when choosing the venue. If using the stage for your ceremony, take a measuring tape to your site visit to ensure the positioning of the stage allows for your dream entrance. Most mandaps require at least 12’x12’. Standard stage pieces are 4’x 6’ or 6’x 8’, so the stage will often be larger than the mandap, allowing extra walking room. Be sure to find out details about the stage: will you need carpet to cover it; will it have skirting and what colors are available; what heights are available (most common is 24” for a ceremony); do you need stairs and will the railings need to be covered; and if the stage will be used for performances, is the surface smooth? Be sure to know the venue’s policies and share them with your wedding professionals. Usually, the policies will lay out rules, such as no stapling or adhering to surfaces, move-in and move-out times, permit requirements, limitations of preferred vendors, outside catering allowances, noise or décor restrictions – such as the use of candles, confetti or pyrotechnics, to name a few. Don’t assume! Ask questions and have it in writing. Once you sign a contract, you are bound by it. It is for your protection to have all the terms you agree to in writing. Often, the personnel you have contracted with can change, rules are updated and prices can increase. Finding the perfect venue is hard. Hiring a wedding coordinator to assist in this process will give you a wealth of insight. Be sure to review and negotiate the terms of the contract that are unique to your events. It is often a misconception that you need less décor if a venue is already pretty. You may still need a centerpiece and linens to bring the room to life and create your signature event. A good coordinator and décor designer can suggest options for overused venues. Rely on your professionals to tell you what works and doesn’t in a space. Be sure you understand your total budget before selecting a venue, as it will often be your single largest budget line item. A final word of advice: work with a plan, know your needs, stay with your budget and find your perfect venue! Ø

Entertainers
YOU’VE PLANNED, YOU’VE PREPPED, YOU’VE PREPARED… NOW IT’S TIME TO PAR-TAY. SURE, YOUR WEDDING DAY IS THE BIGGEST DAY IN YOUR LIFE, BUT WHAT ABOUT YOUR GUESTS? FORGET THE SLIDESHOWS, THE FAMILY DANCES, THE TYPICAL BAND OR DJ—IT’S TIME TO SHAKE THINGS UP! HERE ARE SOME SURE-FIRE WAYS TO MAKE YOUR WEDDING DAY MEMORABLE AND KEEP YOUR GUESTS FULLY ENTERTAINED.
The Hipster Bride: Modern, Cutting-Edge Instead of paper menu cards, rent digital tablets at each table to place your dinner or drink orders! They are already so popular at most restaurants and can be altered to create a unique look and feel for each event. One tablet rental per table needs to be accounted for in your budget, but the wow factor is so worth it! Are you a big texter? Have your guests text their well-wishes onto a large projector during the reception. I strongly encourage a “screening” process before the messages go “live” because open bar plus texting equals dangerous hilarity. Big on social media? Set up a Twitter or Facebook account with your wedding name and have your guests send messages to it. Just imagine the hashtags! #fifthdrinkfail, #openbarrocks. You can go to your private page at any time, and copy and paste your favorite messages to your own guest book. Entertain your guests with an interactive dance floor that lights up with the beat of the music. Couple the effect with plasmas playing the latest videos so guests will know exactly how to do the Gangnam style! The Boho Bride: Earthy, Chic, Whimsical For your wedding reception, consider having your guests plant seeds in a small pot, then write a note with permanent marker on a pre-cut plastic tag that can be inserted into the pot. You can plant the small pots in your backyard and surround the seedlings with the tags. Watching the tree or flower, fruit or herb grow throughout the years will remind you of that interactive love your guests shared with you on your big day.
Bring out your inner gypsy by having costumed fortune tellers or tarot card readers in the corners of the room giving your guests some entertainment, amusement or advice. You can even house them under colorful mini tents to add to the mystical appeal.
The Urban Bride: Edgy, Chic, Progressive Start your cocktail hour with a mix… a mixologist that is. Imagine a hot mixologist throwing bottles in the air. Have a few specialty drinks on the menu and watch him or her entertain the guests. Don’t forget the sparklers, dry ice and LED ice cubes! Most tourists’ fondest memories of Times Square are visiting the caricaturist to see what funny image they will create. Better than a photobooth, caricatures are the ultimate keepsake to preserve the magic of your big day. Just make sure you have plenty of artists on hand for your guest count. What do most people crave after leaving a party, or nightclub? FOOD! Keep your party going afterhours with city-style food trucks parked outside of your venue or authentic food carts stationed inside. Chicken and rice platters, sliders, biryani carts, kati rolls or even pizza! For a “sweet dreams” send off, set up an ice cream truck or a DIY sundae bar. The Classic Bride: Historic, Time-Honored Just because your wedding is traditional, you can still add a lot of unexpected pizzazz by changing up a few time-honored traditions. Instead of a band, hire a string quartet and slip them some Bollywood

sheet music. Imagine your guests’ delight when they hear songs like “Mehndi Laga ke Rakhna” or “Khajara Re” coming from cellos, harps and strolling violinists. Or how about having a dhol player, but add in a bongo player… a real drum-on-drum battle-off with Cuban and Indian flavor! Nothing says old-world glamour more than a Cigar and Cordial bar surrounded by cushioned leather chairs. Serve aged brandy, a variety of ports and top-shelf scotch. For the ultimate full-service experience, have a professional cigar roller on site, not only to roll the cigars, but to have them cut and lit as well. Serve both fat, male-friendly cigars and more demure, flavored ones for the females. Keep small cellophane bags embellished with your monogram on hand for those who want a keepsake of your fabulous wedding to enjoy at home. On the same theme, a hookah area complete with Moroccan-inspired décor lends a more “Haveli” feel to your traditional wedding. Imagine your guests partaking in tall, regal, glass hookahs in flavors like vanilla, watermelon and apple while being entertained by Umrao Jaan-style dancers. Keep your guests rolling in laughter by hiring a comedian or comedy troupe. Whether they will be doing a stand-up routine or emceeing the evening, it will surely be a crowd-pleaser with appropriate content for the occasion.
The Glam Bride: Magical, Sparkly With the rise in gourmet cuisine as both entertainment and sustenance, pair each course of your meal with matched beers or wines. You can place printed menus with a description of the pairings on the table or hire a sommelier to teach your guests how to cleanse their palate between courses. You don’t need to go to Vegas, bring Cirque de Soleil-style entertainment to your wedding! With contortionists, fire dancers, aerialists and much more, your guests will be captivated by the grace and costumes of these artists. Imagine how delighted your guests will be with a wedding, dinner and a show all at once. Check with your venue on specifications and safety, and may I specify, employ professionals… not your friend’s cousin! To really take guests on an interactive ride, rent blackjack, Texas hold ‘em and roulette casino tables. Give your guests “funny money” to gamble with throughout the night to win prizes in the end. Many places will rent you a gambling suite complete with uniformed dealers and servers. Nothing keeps a party going stronger than a high-stakes game of roulette. ø

The Final
Foodtier
ASIDE FROM JOINING YOU IN CELEBRATING THE MOST IMPORTANT DAY OF YOUR LIFE, THE MAJORITY OF YOUR GUESTS ARE MOST EXCITED ABOUT THE FOOD. FOOD IS SOMETHING THAT IS NOT INCIDENTAL; IT IS SOMETHING YOUR BODY RESPONDS TO, AND THOSE PLEASURES (OR DISPLEASURES) ARE VERY PERSONAL TO YOUR GUESTS. In South Asian weddings worldwide, food has been an important element, but something that the parents usually took care of. Brides have often been too busy with outfits and décor details and grooms are happy to simply show up on the day. Over the past few years, however, food is playing an increasing role in our social life, our entertainment (how many food shows on TV can you count?) and our daily conversations. Food has become a form of art and weddings are a great platform to showcase a family’s or couple’s culture and creativity.
Been There, Done That! Wedding food is predictable. We all love dal makhani, chicken tikka masala and samosas, and why not? These dishes are the foundation of our world-renowned cuisine, and delivering consistently good samosas is no joke. No one knows this better than me, as I run restaurants for a living! But why should we all be subjected to this repetitive charade of samosa-eating to the point where we don’t find these samosas interesting anymore? There may be an unwritten rule that we serve South Asian fare at our weddings, however, this fare can be presented in a worldly way with brides
embracing the concept of fusion (without turning it into confusion). A lot of caterers are becoming aware of this and are starting to deliver our classics in new avatars. Sometimes, it’s merely the presentation that makes it different and sometimes, American, European or Asian elements are entwined with our good ol’ desi fare.
Choosing a Caterer Dividing assignments between different caterers according to their strengths makes a lot of sense. If you have three events, why should the same caterer do the food for all of them, unless economy of scale is your mantra. I suggest working with two different caterers, in some cases even for the same event! One can be in charge of the appetizers, while the other handles the main course. And if you have a wedding planner or coordinator, leave it to them to handle the transition and logistics. If your venue is a hotel, consider ordering some food items from there while interspersing those with an ethnic caterer to achieve a more out-of-the-box experience. Another option is to hire a caterer who is known for their creativity and can singlehandedly execute this fusion experience. Such caterers are

easier to find in large cities like New York and Chicago, and many of them are willing to travel, so don’t rule that option out by restricting yourself to local caterers.
The Cocktail Hour Begins Experienced caterers are not only knowledgeable about the latest trends in food menus, but are also seasoned in presentation creativity. For instance, the cocktail hour is a great window to showcase creativity with minimum risk. Food stations beyond chaat and kebabs are the way to go. For example, if you are doing chicken tikka, why not add a little guacamole, wrap it in a tortilla (or a mini phulka) and serve a chicken tikka taco? Or if you are doing a curried shrimp, take it out of the curry and place it on a small round toast and serve it as a shrimp bruschetta. If you are planning to serve chaat, serve individual portions in either bamboo boats or in molded form. Try a falafel bite, filled with tabouleh and hummus in a mini pita. The point is to present the traditional in an unexpected way.
Tulsi: Upma tower with crispy okra
Main Course: Buffet, Plated or Family-Style?
Bittersweet NYC: Ginger panna cotta with orange gelĂŠe and poached pears
78
This is the million-dollar question I am asked anytime I am in a catering meeting. Buffets are good for very large crowds (over 400 guests), but plated food will give you the most opportunity to be creative. I see people doing plated food just for the sake of it, but if your caterer is simply going to dump curry over rice on a plate, you might as well do a buffet. Plated meals should be photographable. The only ethnic presentation for Indian food is a thaali, but with all the bowls and special thaalis required, this is usually quickly ruled out. This is when couples should think of following American or European food presentation techniques to serve food in an artistic way. This involves having a balance of color, thinking about the size of food on the plate and adding height to give an aesthetically pleasing, three-dimensional look. It’s always a great idea to limit plated food to a main protein with some sauce and garnish, with all other accompaniments served family-style in the center of the table. Even vegetarians can follow this rule in substituting the main protein with a main focal point such as banana dumplings laced in a spicy curry sauce. However, if you do insist on serving biryani, serve it as individual portions in a mound or pretty container. A great service team is obviously instrumental to delivering the correct meal to the correct guest in a timely fashion, so it is important to ensure the venue or caterer can handle
Tulsi: Individual dum biryani
Tulsi: Shrimp and crab pappadum
Chand Palace: Pashto kebab Tulsi: Banana dumplings this approach and has had experience doing it before. When choosing a caterer, ask for references, see where they have served in the past and most importantly, make sure you have at least one, if not two tastings of your items before your event.
And the Dessert? Gone are the days when only very traditional gulab jamun and gajar ka halva would mark the culmination of a meal. A combination of South Asian mithai with western confections is the new way to go. For this, you would need to involve either your cake designer or another pastry caterer to do something like a South Asian version of a Venetian dessert table. Companies like Bittersweet NYC are serving up mini desserts with dishes like coconut lemongrass falooda and shrikhand so beautiful you won’t recognize it as yogurt. How do dal halwa truffles sound? Bittersweet NYC has a version. 79
Sweet Silk: Date and pistachio truffle tree

The smaller the desserts, the better. The more creative... you get the idea. One innovator in this field is Sweet Silk who has taken traditional mithai and designed it to look like a petit four but with a fusion of ethnic and western flavors, like fig roasted cashew and vanilla chai spice. I have also come across some chocolate confectioners like Chocal8Kiss from New Jersey using Indian spices. Cakes, of course, are the originator in wedding food presentation. Today, however, cakes are being viewed as art and the more creative the cake, the better. From cupcakes, to cake pops to a multitiered cake, you now have a choice in cake styles and you should take advantage of that. Break out of your mindset and explore the vast options of fusion cuisine from your cocktail hour all the way through to your dessert table. Your food choices while help you create a truly memorable culinary experience for your guests, and one that they will remember long after the wedding is over. ø

Weddings of Nepal
Arranged marriages are common in Nepal, and often take place in the teens or early 20s. Couples are matched according to caste, religion, lineage and compatibility. In Sherpa culture, marriages can be held between children, but celebrated years later. If two families are interested, the prospective couple is asked to meet. Once they agree to wed, their astrological birth charts are taken to the Seer, or priest, who selects auspicious dates. Once the initial arrangements are made, the wedding begins with a gathering at the groom’s home, complete with food and drink. They prepare to travel to the bride’s home in a Janti, or procession, with a traditional band made up of young men playing large drums. They are first led to a temple, where friends and family seek blessings. With much fanfare, the band then leads the party to the bride’s home – the usual marriage venue – which is often heavily decorated with lights, flowers and colorful papers. Upon the procession’s arrival, a small group of people, called the Bhatkhaure, is sent forward with message of the Janti’s arrival to ensure preparations are up to expectations. They are mockingly treated badly, given tea laced with hot chillis and made to sit on pillows stuffed with thorns. Everyone has a good laugh
84
and the Bhatkhaures see through the farce as the Janti arrives and is welcomed with garlands and gifts. Depending on the religion, the groom is led to a mandap, where the bride joins him, or the couple is led to an area surrounded by a barrier of grass and sticks. The area is considered secure and no one is allowed to enter unless granted permission. Here, the couple will take an oath to be partners for life. The first ceremony is the Swayamvar, where the bride “chooses” her husband by circling him three times while letting water drip from an omkhara vessel. The couple exchanges floral garlands and traditional grass garlands called dubo ko mala and at this time, rings may also be exchanged. A white khatta, or prayer scarf, may also be placed on their shoulders as the Seer continues the ceremony. Perhaps the most sacred part of a Nepalese wedding is the Sindoor, in which a white sheet is stretched out with one end held at the bride’s forehead. The groom uses a red powder called sindoor, and spreads it from the beginning of the sheet into the part of her hair. This is done three times and confirms they are now officially married. After the wedding, it is tradition for Nepalese brides to wear sindoor in their hair for the rest of their married life. A Nepalese bride will dress in an ornate red sari on her wedding day, and will often have gold beads above her eyebrows and colorful, heavy jewelry and bangles. A large teeka, delicately crafted earrings and intricate henna on her arms and feet complete her look. A traditional groom will wear a Daura Suruwal, a long Nepalese tunic made of a fabric called dhaka. The suit comes with a matching hat and is worn with a belt into which some grooms tuck a Khukuri, or Nepalese knife. After the wedding rituals are preformed, the bride changes into a new sari given to her by her husband. She returns to sit next to the groom, and the celebration continues with the exchange of gifts and an elaborate feast. Nepalese weddings are colourful occasions filled with the light of spirituality and the love of family, and are truly a sight to be seen. Ø

NEPALESE WEDDINGS ARE KNOWN FOR THEIR ATTENTION TO COLOR, ELABORATE DECORATIONS AND ADHERENCE TO CUSTOM. THE WEDDING, USUALLY PLANNED YEARS AHEAD, IS A SPECTACULAR OCCASION AND ONE THAT IS HELD IN HIGH REGARD IN NEPALESE SOCIETY. OF COURSE, THE PARTICULAR RITUALS OF THE WEDDING DIFFER FROM RELIGION TO RELIGION, BUT HERE, WE TRY TO IMPART THE FEEL OF THESE COLORFUL OCCASIONS. By Mahiyn Qureshi

TAMIL WEDDINGS ARE A CELEBRATION OF LOVE, SPIRITUALITY AND FAMILY. TRADITIONAL FAMILIES VALUE SIMPLICITY AND KEEP THEIR WEDDINGS MODEST. THOUGH THE CEREMONY MAY BE MINIMALISTIC, THE RITUALS LEADING UP TO IT ARE FULL OF GLITZ, MUSIC AND DANCING. LIKE MOST HINDU WEDDINGS, TAMIL CELEBRATIONS TYPICALLY LAST A FEW DAYS. FAMILIES RELY HEAVILY ON ASTROLOGY AND HOROSCOPES AND IF THE COUPLE IS FOUND ASTRONOMICALLY COMPATIBLE, A PRIEST WILL DECIDE AN AUSPICIOUS WEDDING DATE. By Mahiyn Qureshi The Panda Kaal Muhurtham is held a day before the wedding and is the first blessing sought to ensure the festivities run hassle-free. On that day, the families join together in front of a Hindu priest for the Vratham Tellichal to pray for blessings. Following this is the Pallikai Tellichal, in which married women pour grains of rice into clay pots while singing traditional hymns. Once the grains sprout, they are poured into a body of water where fish devour them and the couple is blessed. On the dawn of the wedding day, the couple takes a Mangala Snaanam, or holy bath, in which they apply oils and herbs to beautify themselves. Traditionally, the bride wears a heavy Kanjeevaram sari with seven threads in each weave. The sari border usually has temple designs woven into the fabric, while the pallu displays scenes from Hindu mythology. Figures of Hindu deities and birds, such as swans and peacocks, may also be seen in the weave. Brides may change their sari up to five times during the wedding, and will be adorned in gold jewelry, such as anklets, toe rings and bangles. She will also pin white flowers to her hair to emphasize her beauty. A traditional groom dresses in a veshti or dhoti draped in the panchakacham (five folds) style.
He may also wear a Thalaip Pahai on his head and Kadukkan, single-stone earrings, in his ears. Historically, grooms would be shirtless, but today, many choose to wear a tunic or western suit. The wedding takes place under a mandap, where the groom is welcomed by his father-in-law, who washes his feet while his mother-in-law decorates his eyes with kohl. He is now considered to be an incarnation of a deity. The bride is brought to the mandap during the Kanyadaanam and will sit in her father’s lap with a coconut in her hand. They hand the coconut to the groom as her mother pours water over it, which signifies handing over their daughter to her new family. The groom’s family then gives the bride a nine-yard sari to change into. The wedding then continues with the most symbolic ritual in which the groom puts the mangalsutra, or marriage necklace, on his bride and wraps a sacred thread around her neck and ties three knots to signify the union of mind, body and spirit. During the Saptapadi, the couple holds hands and walks around the sacred fire seven times, vowing to stand as one during their journey through life. In another ceremony, the couple playfully exchanges garlands three times. After the rituals are complete, the families partake in Sammandhi Mariyathai, in which they exchange clothes and gifts in celebration. Toward the end of the wedding, the bride is welcomed to her new home in the Grihapravesham ceremony. Finally, a feast is served in a lavish reception. The spirituality and simplicity of a Tamil wedding boasts its culture to the world. The ceremonies demonstrate the importance of family, union and religion in the Tamilian culture. Ø 85
